The vanadium (V)-based cathode of aqueous zinc-ion batteries (ZIBs) faces the problem of rapid capacity decay due to material dissolution and structural collapse during the continuous cycling process. Here, we present a strategy to convert the irreversible cathode-electrolyte interphase (CEI) layer of the NH 4 V 4 O 10 (NVO) cathode into a protective layer by incorporating alkali metal sulfate as an additive. After the introduction of Na + , the dynamic consumption and replenishment of OH – during the conversion of Zn 3 (OH) 2 V 2 O 7 ·2H 2 O and Na 2 ZnV 2 O 7 regulates the pH value on the surface of the NVO cathode and inhibits the occurrence of side reactions. The NVO cathode exhibits a higher specific capacity (from 371.8 to 407.8mAh g −1 at 0.1 A g −1 ), better capacity retention (from 30.5 % to 65.9 % after 150 cycles), and superior rate capability after Na + introduction. Additionally, the Na + additives could be also applied for other V-based materials (e.g., V 2 O 5 and VO 2 ) to significantly improve the capacity retention rate. This strategy of incorporating alkali metal sulfate electrolyte additives to fortify cathode cycling stability serves to expedite the transition of aqueous ZIBs from the realm of academia to the industrial sector.

Vanadium-based cathodes with high specific capacity have attracted wide attention in aqueous zinc ion batteries . The main barriers of the development of vanadium-based cathodes are vanadium dissolution, structure degradation, instability of cathode electrolyte interlayer (CEI) and parasitic reactions in aqueous electrolyte. In this work, for the first time, we propose a new type of ultralow-water-activity electrolyte that tackles all these problems. Our design is realized by the introduction of pioneering inert electrolyte filler (trimethyl phosphate). It is discovered that highly concentrated ZnCl 2 H 2 O clusters are surrounded by this electrolyte filler, reaching the lowest free solvation water composition (2.5%) reported so far. The ultralow water activity significantly inhibits parasitic reactions and vanadium dissolution, boosting the achievement of the highest columbic efficiency (99.98%). The biggest bottleneck of vanadium-based cathodes dissolution and water shuttle has been broken through by stable CEI. As a proof of concept , the V 6 O 13 cathode demonstrates exceptional stability of 99.43% capacity retention after 3 000 cycles at 1 A g −1 , and sets a new record for cycle life of 30 000 cycles (capacity retention of 90.34% at 10 A g −1 ) in zinc ion batteries , even reaching the level of supercapacitors (∼100 000 cycles).

This paper proposes a strategy of oxalic acid-regulated cobalt ion doping to construct a multi-phase coexisting vanadium-based cathode material (CoVO) through a one-step hydrothermal method, and systematically studies its influence on the electrochemical performance of aqueous zinc-ion batteries. The study systematically investigates the effects of oxalic acid concentration on the phase composition, valence state distribution of vanadium, and oxygen defect concentration of CoVO, revealing the enhancement mechanism of electrochemical performance by the synergistic effect of multiphase, oxygen deficiency and Co ions. The experimental results show that the optimized CoVO-3 sample achieves a high specific capacity of 317 mAh g −1 at a current density of 0.1 A g −1 and maintains a capacity retention rate of 89.71 % after 2000 cycles at 5 A g −1 . The rational design in multi-phase interface, enhancement of electronic conductivity due to Co 2+ doping and pseudocapacitive energy storage dominating mechanism are responsible for the superior activity of CoVO-3 sample. Besides, the kinetic results prove that multi - phase interface and oxygen defects will enhance rapidly insertion/extraction kinetics of Zn 2+ from the synergistic effect. In this paper, we present an alternative design strategy to create high-performance and long-cycle-stable cathode materials for aqueous zinc ion batteries.

One of the hottest research topics at present is the construction of environmentally friendly and secure aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs) using an aqueous electrolyte instead of an organic electrolyte. As a result of their diverse structure, valence state, high theoretical specific capacity, and other benefits, vanadium-based materials, which are frequently employed as the cathode of AZIBs, have drawn the attention of many researchers. The low cycle stability of zinc ion batteries (ZIBs) is mostly caused by the disintegration of the vanadium-based cathode materials during continuous charge and discharge. In this work, using 3M Zn(CF3SO3)2as the electrolyte and hydrothermally synthesized Ag2V4O11as the cathode material, the high-rate performance and extended cycle life of ZIBs were evaluated. The effects of different hydrothermal temperatures on the microstructure, capacity, and cycle stability of the Ag2V4O11cathode material were examined. The experimental results show that Ag2V4O11exhibits a typical intercalation-displacement process when used as the cathode material. The multiplicative performance and cycle stability of the cathode material were significantly enhanced at a hydrothermal temperature of 180 °C. Ag2V4O11-180 has a high discharge specific capacity of 251.5 mAh·g−1at a current density of 0.5 A·g−1and a long cycle life (117.6 mAh·g−1after 1000 cycles at a current density of 3 A·g−1). According to the electrochemical kinetic investigation, the cathode material has a high pseudocapacitive charge storage and Zn2+diffusion coefficient. This is attributed to the large layer spacing and the Ag+anchored interlayer structure.

Sodium superionic conductor (NASICON)-type phosphates cathodes have attracted considerable attention due to their high operational voltage and robust three-dimensional (3D) framework; however, the poor intrinsic electronic conductivity and low energy density hinder their broader application. Herein, a novel NASICON-type Na 3 V 1.44 Fe 0.5 Mo 0.06 (PO 4 ) 3 cathode was designed through Fe/Mo dual-doping at the V sites of Na 3 V 2 (PO 4 ) 3 and synthesized via a conventional high-temperature solid-state method. The introduction of Fe 3+ activates the V 4+ /V 5+ redox couple at a high voltage plateau (∼ 4.0 V), while also generates additional Fe 2+ /Fe 3+ and V 4+ /V 5+ redox pairs. Meanwhile, the doing of Mo 6+ creates cation vacancies, effectively modulating the electronic structure of vanadium and promoting ionic transport kinetics. Benefiting from this dual-doping strategy, the Na 3 V 1.44 Fe 0.5 Mo 0.06 (PO 4 ) 3 cathode delivers a high capacity of 123.4 mAh g −1 at 0.2C and an impressive energy density of 406 Wh kg −1 within 2.2–4.2 V. Moreover, it exhibits outstanding cycling stability, presenting a capacity retention of 92 % after 2500 cycles at 30C. This work highlights a viable strategy for advancing high-performance NASICON-type cathodes through complex metal ion doping.

Aqueous zinc-ion batteries (ZIBs) are desirable for safe and large scale energy storage. However, the lack of suitable cathodes that show excellent comprehensive performance is still key reason that hinders the development of ZIBs. Herein, a laminar hydrated vanadium oxide composites (VOH ND@C) with outstanding rate capability and stability are comprehensively designed and regulated by a fast in-situ electrochemical self-transformation process. The precursor materials (V 2 O 3 ND@C) are fabricated firstly by freeze-drying method in bulk and subsequent calcination process, after which small V 2 O 3 nanodots can be evenly distributed in carbon nanosheets. During electrochemical treatment process, the precursors are fast transformed into laminar hydrated vanadium oxide composites with better structure stability. It is because this strategy of integrating pre-inserted H 2 O molecules and constructing carbon encapsulation are proved to be effectively inhibit volume expansion of vanadium oxide and improve electron transfer. Meanwhile, laminar composite structure and highly exposed active surface from vanadium oxide nanodots contribute to the high-rate capability. Consequently, the VOH ND@C cathode delivers high specific capacity of 452.8 mA h g -1 at 0.2 A g -1 , and excellent rate performance of 176.5 mA h g -1 even at 50 A g -1 . Moreover, excellent cycling stability is acquired with capacity retention 86% over 10,000 cycles. This work is expected to provide a new scalable practical route to improve V-based cathode materials for advanced ZIBs.

Metal selenides have emerged as promising Na-storage anode materials owing to their substantial theoretical capacity and high cost-effectiveness. However, the application of metal selenides is hindered by inferior electronic conductivity, huge volume variation, and sluggish kinetics of ionic migration. In response to these challenges, herein, a hierarchical hollow tube consisting of FeSe 2 nanosheets and Se quantum dots anchored within a carbon skeleton (HT-FeSe 2 /Se/C) is strategically engineered and synthesized. The most remarkable feature of HT-FeSe 2 /Se/C is the introduction of Se quantum dots, which could lead to high electron density near the Fermi level and significantly enhance the overall charge transfer capability of the electrode. Moreover, the distinctive hollow tubular structure enveloped by the carbon skeleton endows the HT-FeSe 2 /Se/C anode with robust structural stability and fast surface-controlled Na-storage kinetics. Consequently, the as-synthesized HT-FeSe 2 /Se/C demonstrates a reversible capacity of 253.5 mAh/g at a current density of 5 A/g and a high specific capacity of 343.9 mAh/g at 1 A/g after 100 cycles in sodium-ion batteries (SIBs). Furthermore, a full cell is assembled with HT-FeSe 2 /Se/C as the anode, and a vanadium-based cathode (Na 3 V 2 (PO 4 ) 2 O 2 F), showcasing a high specific capacity of 118.1 mAh/g at 2 A/g. The excellent performance of HT-FeSe 2 /Se/C may hint at future material design strategies and advance the development and application of SIBs.
