Graphical Going uphill : The dissolution mechanism of sodium vanadium phosphate (NVP) in an aqueous electrolyte is investigated in detail. Using metal (Fe or W) doping can enhance the strength of the metal-oxygen bond to suppress partial vanadium dissolution in NVP. Furthermore, the synergy of bimetallic doping completely inhibits V dissolution to improve the cycling stability of NVP. Aqueous sodium-ion batteries (ASIB) offer many potential applications in large-scale power grids since they are inexpensive, safe, and environmentally friendly. Sodium superionic conductors (NASICON), especially carbon-coated Na 3 V 2 (PO 4 ) 3 (NVP), have attracted much attention due to the full use of their high ion migration speed. However, the poor cycle lifespan and capacity retention of NVP hinder its application in ASIB. Herein, a novel bimetal-doped Na 3 V 1.3 Fe 0.5 W 0.2 (PO 4 ) 3 (NV 1.3 Fe 0.5 W 0.2 P) cathode is designed and synthesized to achieve outstanding cycling stability (95 % of initial capacity at 50th cycle). The electrochemical behavior and charge storage mechanism of NV 1.3 Fe 0.5 W 0.2 P are systematically investigated by various in situ and ex situ characterizations. The Fe and W codoping could stabilize the NASICON framework to suppress the proton attack on the Na site in the aqueous electrolyte, thus resulting in excellent cycling stability. DFT calculations show that bimetallic doping increases the structural stability of NVP. Moreover, an ASIB fabricated using a NV 1.3 Fe 0.5 W 0.2 P cathode and a NaTi 2 (PO 4 ) 3 anode delivers 64 mAh g −1 at room temperature, 95 % capacity retention after 50 cycles (1 A g −1 ).

Vanadium-based compounds with an open framework structure have become the subject of much recent investigation into aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs) due to high specific capacity. However, there are some issues with vanadium dissolution from a cathode framework as well as the generation of byproducts during discharge that should not be ignored, which could cause severe capacity deterioration and inadequate cycle life. Herein, we report several barium vanadate nanobelt cathodes constructed of two sorts of architectures, i.e., Ba1.2V6O16·3H2O and BaV6O16·3H2O (V3O8-type) and BaxV2O5·nH2O (V2O5-type), which are controllably synthesized by tuning the amount of barium precursor. Benefiting from the robust architecture, layered BaxV3O8-type nanobelts (Ba1.2V6O16·3H2O) exhibit superior rate capability and long-term cyclability owing to fast zinc-ion kinetics, enabled by efficiently suppressing cathode dissolution as well as greatly eliminating the generation of byproduct Zn4SO4(OH)6·xH2O, which provides a reasonable strategy to engineer cathode materials with robust architectures to improve the electrochemical performance of AZIBs.

Layered vanadium oxide materials exhibit significant multielectron redox reactions and regulatable transfer channels for Zn 2+ insertion/extraction in rechargeable aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs). However, vanadium dissolution poses a severe challenge to achieving stable performance in AZIBs. In this work, we report an in-situ polymerization of polyaniline (PANI) on ZnV 2 O 4 (ZVO) materials, resulting in a cross-interlocked nanosheet morphology to inhibit vanadium dissolution. The high conductivity and unique π-conjugated structure of PANI effectively weaken the electrostatic interactions between Zn 2+ and the V-O layers, thereby enhancing the diffusion of Zn 2+ at the electrode material interface, suppressing the vanadium dissolution of ZnV 2 O 4 and stabilizing its structure framework. Concurrently, density functional theory (DFT) calculations further confirm that PANI can significantly modulate the electronic properties of the ZVO matrix. PANI forms robust hydrogen bonds with ZVO, resulting in an abundance of free Zn ions within the system, which accelerates electron/ion transfer kinetics, thereby enhancing the efficient storage performance of Zn 2+ and increasing specific capacity. The ZVO@PANI composite electrode exhibits high specific capacity (706.4 mAh g −1 at 0.1 A g −1 ), remarkable rate capability (350.2 mAh g −1 at 5 A g −1 ), and robust cycling performance. This study provides a reasonable strategy for designing high-performance cathode materials for aqueous zinc-ion batteries.

Low-cost sodium-ion-based electrochemical energy storage devices, especially vanadium-based sodium-ion pseudocapacitors, are receiving increasing attention. However, the inevitable dissolution of vanadium in aqueous electrolytes usually leads to poor cycling stability and a narrow electrochemical stability window (ESW). In this study, we prepared layered (NH4)2V10O25·8H2O with a hierarchical flower-like structure and an ultralarge layer spacing and evaluated its potential as a sodium-ion pseudocapacitive material. Ex situ X-ray diffraction (XRD) measurement and kinetic analysis demonstrate the reversible intercalation and deintercalation of Na+ in (NH4)2V10O25·8H2O in NaClO4 electrolytes. Significantly improved durability and a large voltage window of 3.2 V are achieved in the high-concentration NaClO4 electrolyte. Inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES) analysis and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations reveal that the dissolution of vanadium in the high-concentration NaClO4 electrolyte can be effectively suppressed. An asymmetric sodium-ion capacitor with a wide voltage window of 3.2 V was successfully assembled, and it delivered a high energy density of 53.1 Wh kg–1 at a power density of 3.2 kW kg–1.

Rechargeable aqueous zinc-ion batteries (ZIBs) represent a promising energy storage technology due to their intrinsic safety, low cost, and environmental compatibility. However, the practical application of vanadium-based cathodes is hindered by structural instability and rapid capacity decay during cycling. Herein, we develop an Al 3+ doping strategy to engineer the VO 2 cathode with remarkably enhanced stability. The introduction of Al 3+ not only induces favorable oxygen vacancies but also reinforces the host structure, effectively mitigating lattice strain and minimizing vanadium dissolution. The resulting Al2-VO 2 cathode exhibits a high specific capacity of 452 mAh g −1 at 0.1 A g −1 and exceptional long-term cyclability, retaining ∼70% capacity after 10000 cycles at 10 A g −1 . Kinetics studies further reveal capacitive-dominated storage behavior and facilitated Zn 2+ diffusion, underscoring the role of defect engineering in boosting electrochemical performance. This work provides a feasible cation-doping approach to realize highly stable VO 2 -based cathodes for sustainable energy storage applications.

Hydrated vanadates have gained significant attentions as cathode for aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs) on account of their broad open channels in the structural framework together with the existence of crystal water for stabilizing the structure. Yet, the lower electronic conductivity and the dissolution of vanadium in the electrolyte both affect the specific capacity and stability. In this work, we successfully prepared a unique hydrated zinc pyrovanadate Zn 3 (OH) 2 V 2 O 7 ·(H 2 O) 2 with broad tunnel structure through a hydrothermal method . The carbon encapsulation strategy was then used to enhance its specific capacity, rate performanc and cycle stability in AZIBs. Further, the cycle stability was improved using a highly concentrated ZnWiS electrolyte capable of inhibiting vanadium dissolution, and improved the cycling time from one month to one year at low current densities with high capacity retention rate. Additionally, the electrochemical performances under high-temperature conditions of 50 °C and 80 °C are also investigated. It is found that an increase in temperature can promote the ionic conductivity of the electrolyte and the kinetics of electrode reactions , thus accelerating charge transfer. Due to the excellent high-temperature resistance of the ZnWiS electrolyte, the assembled AZIBs both achieved calendar-level cycle life at 50 °C and 80 °C. These excellent results demonstrate that the dual-strategy approach of carbon encapsulation to enhance the conductivity and high concentration electrolyte to inhibit vanadium dissolution provides technical support to promote the application of AZIBs in large-scale energy storage devices.

Magnesium ion batteries have potential for large-scale energy storage. However, the high charge density of Mg2+ ions establishes a strong intercalation energy barrier in host materials, causing sluggish diffusion kinetics and structural degradation. Here, we report that the kinetic and dissolution issues connected to cathode materials can be resolved simultaneously using a tetraethylene glycol dimethyl ether (TEGDME)–water hybrid electrolyte. The lubricating and shielding effect of water solvent could boost the swift transport of Mg2+, contributing to a high diffusion coefficient within the sodium vanadate (NaV8O20·nH2O) cathode. Meanwhile, the organic TEGDME component can coordinate with water to diminish its activity, thus providing the hybrid electrolyte with a broad electrochemical window of 3.9 V. More importantly, the TEGDME preferentially amassed at the interface, leading to a robust cathode electrolyte interface layer that suppresses the dissolution of vanadium species. Consequently, the NaV8O20·nH2O cathode achieved a specific capacity of 351 mAh g–1 at 0.3 A g–1 and a long cycle life of 1000 cycles in this hybrid electrolyte. A mechanism study revealed the reversible interaction of Mg2+ during cycles. This organic water hybrid electrolyte is effective for overcoming the difficulty of multivalent ion storage.

Pre-intercalation has emerged as a highly effective strategy to enhance structural integrity and ion transport kinetics in cathodes for aqueous Zn-ion batteries. Here, we report a zinc-ion pre-intercalated hydrate vanadium oxide cathode, in which the initial insertion of Zn 2+ induces a significant expansion of the interplanar spacing, followed by contraction at higher Zn 2+ concentrations owing to strong electrostatic interactions with the V O framework. Such competing expansion and contraction of interplanar spacing enhances the overall electrochemical properties. In addition, the pre-intercalated Zn 2+ facilitates the in situ formation of a Zn 3 (OH) 2 V 2 O 7 ·2H 2 O cathode-electrolyte interphase (CEI) layer, which not only suppresses vanadium dissolution but also regulates the desolvation of hydrated Zn 2+ , thus further enhancing the structural integrity and interfacial kinetics. Benefiting from these merits, the Zn 2+ pre-intercalated hydrate vanadium pentoxide (denoted as 2Zn-VOH) cathode delivers a high capacity of 395 mA h g −1 at 0.1 A g −1 , exhibits excellent cycling stability at both low and high current densities, and retains outstanding performance under low-temperature conditions (295 mAh g −1 at 0.1 A g −1 and − 10 °C, with 83.8 % capacity retention after 1000 cycles at 0.2 A g −1 ).
