Graphical Bronze medal : Straczekite δ-Ca 0.24 V 2 O 5 ⋅ H 2 O could be converted into the tunnel β geometry through either a vacuum annealing treatment or the lithiation/delithiation process. Both of the calcium vanadium bronzes exhibit excellent cycling stability as cathode materials for lithium ion batteries. Nanorods of δ-Ca 0.24 V 2 O 5 ⋅ H 2 O, a straczekite group mineral with an open double-layered structure, have been successfully fabricated by a facile hydrothermal method and can be transformed into the tunnel β geometry (β-Ca 0.24 V 2 O 5 ) through a vacuum annealing treatment. The generated β-Ca 0.24 V 2 O 5 still preserves the nanorod construction of δ-Ca 0.24 V 2 O 5 ⋅ H 2 O without substantial sintering and degradation of the nanostructure. As cathode materials, both calcium vanadium bronzes exhibit high reversible capacity, good rate capability, as well as superior cyclability. Compared with the hydrated vanadium bronze, the β-Ca 0.24 V 2 O 5 nanorods show better cycling performance (81.68 and 97.93 % capacity retention after 200 cycles at 100 and 400 mA g −1 , respectively) and excellent long-term cyclic stability with an average decay of 0.035 % per cycle over 500 cycles at 500 mA g −1 . Note that the double-layered δ-Ca 0.24 V 2 O 5 ⋅ H 2 O electrode irreversibly converts into β-Ca x V 2 O 5 phase during the initial Li + insertion/extraction process, while in contrast, the β-phase calcium vanadium bronze electrode shows excellent structural stability during cycling. The excellent electrochemical performance demonstrates that the two calcium vanadium bronzes are potential cathode candidates for rechargeable lithium-ion batteries.

Square block-like σ-Mg 0.25 V 2 O 5 ·H 2 O with an open layered framework has been successfully synthesized via a facile hydrothermal method . The entire synthetic process is efficient and economically beneficial. As a cathode material for lithium-ion batteries, the hydrated magnesium vanadium bronze exhibits a high reversible capacity and excellent cycling stability at high current rates. High discharge capacities of 294.2 and 221 mA h g −1 can be obtained at the current densities of 20 and 100 mA g −1 , respectively. Meanwhile, the electrode achieves a capacity retention of 87.12% after 100 cycles at 100 mA g −1 and has an excellent long-term cyclic stability with an average decay of 0.053% per cycle over 400 cycles at 800 mA g −1 . The structural stability and impedance variation of the σ-Mg 0.25 V 2 O 5 ·H 2 O electrodes upon cycling have also been investigated. The excellent electrochemical performance suggests that the layered Mg 0.25 V 2 O 5 ·H 2 O could be a promising candidate for the cathode material of lithium-ion batteries.

Aqueous zinc-ion batteries are considered promising large grid energy storage systems because of their low cost and high safety. However, the limited cycle life associated capacity fading in cathode materials , especially at high charge-discharge rates, hampers the practical applications of aqueous zinc-ion batteries. Here we report that ammonium vanadium bronze nanosheets bridged by polypyrrole (NVO@PPy) as cathodes significantly enhance the cycle life and rate performances of aqueous zinc-ion batteries. At a high charge-discharge rate of 28 C (10 A g −1 ), the discharge capacity gradually increases with the number of cycles and reaches the maximum value of 195 mAh g −1 over 290 cycles, and the reversible capacity maintains 58% (108.8 mAh g −1 ) even after 2000 cycles. The fast charging-discharging and stable cycling performances are attributed to the high electronic/ionic conductivity of NVO@PPy and the stabilizing effect of PPy on interlayer ammonium. The zinc ion storage mechanism of the NVO@PPy is jointly contributed by intercalation/deintercalation and pseudocapacitance behaviour, the latter not only provides extra capacity but also facilitates fast charge-discharge capability.

Aqueous zinc ion batteries (ZIBs) are emerging as a promising candidate in the post-lithium ion battery era, while the limited choice of cathode materials plagues their further development, especially the tunnel-type cathode materials with high electrochemical performance. Here, a tunnel-type vanadium-based compound based on hydrogen vanadium bronze (HxV2O5) microspheres has been fabricated and employed as the cathode for fast Zn2+ ions’ intercalation/deintercalation, which delivers an excellent capacity (425 mAh g–1 at 0.1 A g–1), a remarkable cyclability (91.3% after 5000 cycles at 20 A g–1), and a sufficient energy density (311.5 Wh kg–1). As revealed by the experimental and theoretical results, such excellent electrochemical performance is confirmed to result from the fast ions/electrons diffusion kinetics promoted by the unique tunnel structure (3.7 × 4.22 Å2, along the c direction), which accomplishes a low Zn2+ ion diffusion barrier and the superior electron-transfer capability of HxV2O5. These results shed light on designing tunnel-type vanadium-based compounds to boost the prosperous development of Zn2+ ion storage cathodes.

Graphical A simple one-step method is reported to synthesize low-temperature solution-processed transition metal oxides (TMOs) of molybdenum oxide and vanadium oxide with oxygen vacancies for a good hole-transport layer (HTL). The oxygen vacancy plays an essential role for TMOs when they are employed as HTLs: TMO films with excess oxygen are highly undesirable for their application in organic electronics.
