Biofilms formed by Bacillus licheniformis usually serve as a continuous bacterial contamination in the dairy industry. The purpose of this study was to explore how 1% organic acids (citric acid, phenyllactic acid, malic acid , and butyric acid) and their 1% organic peroxyacids (peroxycitric acid, peroxyphenyllactic acid, peroxymalic acid, and peroxybutyric acid) can inactive the planktonic and biofilm cells of B. licheniformis . Results demonstrated that the number of B. licheniformis planktonic cells was increased from 4 to 6.46 Log CFU mL −1 when treated with water. Organic peroxyacids, especially peroxyphenyllactic acid (PPA), obviously inactivated planktonic cells of B. licheniformis by a range of 3.32–4.14 Log CFU mL −1 . Moreover, organic peroxyacids could also decrease the cell surface hydrophobicity of bacteria, and effectively control the Ca 2+ -mediated biofilm formation by B. licheniformis in 96-well plates (reduction of OD values by 0.14–0.33) and on stainless steel (reduction of cell counts by 1.20–2.49 Log CFU cm −2 ). The low minimum biofilm eradication concentration of PPA (0.125%) also suggests its strong biofilm inactivation activity, which could serve as a novel and environmentally friendly biofilm control agent in the dairy industry.

Squamous cell carcinoma remains a highly aggressive malignancy with persistently high global incidence and mortality rates, posing significant challenges for effective treatment. Traditional chemotherapies lack specificity, leading to damage in normal tissues and severe side effects, highlighting the urgent need for targeted therapeutic strategies. In this study, copper and calcium co-doped carbon dots (Cu/Ca-CDs) were synthesized using a vacuum-confined heating method. These Cu/Ca-CDs demonstrated excellent tumor-targeting ability through specific binding to folate receptors on murine squamous cell carcinoma cell line (SCC7), facilitated by their pterin ring structure. Mechanistic studies revealed that Cu/Ca-CDs induced SCC7 tumor cell death through copper-induced cuproptosis and calcium overload-mediated apoptosis, as confirmed by Western blot, immunofluorescence staining, and Rhod-2 calcium probe analyses. The dual-mode imaging capability of Cu/Ca-CDs, enabled by fluorescence and computed tomography properties, allowed for real-time tracking of their distribution and accumulation within tumors. This imaging-guided approach ensured precise delivery to tumor tissues while minimizing damage to normal tissues. In vivo experiments demonstrated significant tumor volume reduction and increased survival rates in tumor-bearing mice treated with Cu/Ca-CDs, without any observed toxicity to normal tissues or changes in body weight, underscoring the efficacy and biosafety of Cu/Ca-CDs. These findings highlight Cu/Ca-CDs as a promising strategy for precision oncology, offering effective tumor targeting, dual-mode imaging, and synergistic anti-tumor efficacy with reduced side effects.

An immunosuppressive tumour microenvironment strongly influences response rates in patients receiving immune checkpoint blockade-based cancer immunotherapies, such as programmed death-1 (PD-1) and programmed death-ligand 1 (PD-L1). Here we demonstrate that metal-ion-chelating l -phenylalanine nanostructures synergize with short-term starvation (STS) to remodel the immunosuppressive microenvironment of breast and colorectal tumours. These nanostructures modulate the electrophysiological behaviour of dendritic cells and activate them through the NLRP3 inflammasome and calcium-mediated nuclear factor-κB pathway. STS promotes the cellular uptake of nanostructures through amino acid transporters and plays a key role in dendritic cell maturation and tumour-specific cytotoxic T lymphocyte responses. This study demonstrates the potential role of metal-ion-chelating l -phenylalanine nanostructures in activating immune responses and the effect of STS treatment in improving nanomaterial-mediated cancer immunotherapy.
