Preparation of Monophasic Tungsten boride powder from Tungsten and boron carbide

Yu Wang,Zhi-Bo Li,Kai-Fei Wang,Guo-Hua Zhang

Tungsten borides are special compounds with potential applications in superhard materials, anti-friction materials, and catalytic materials. In this study, a new synthetic method for tungsten boride is proposed using tungsten (W) and boron carbide (B 4 C) as raw materials. First, the boronization reaction between W and B 4 C was carried out at a high temperature; then, the boronization products were reacted with calcium to generate CaC 2 for decarburization. After acidic leaching of the CaC 2 and Ca, pure tungsten boride could be prepared. By investigating the reaction between different ratios of W and B 4 C, it was found that only pure W 2 B and WB were synthesized in the current method, and W 2 B 5 could react rapidly with Ca to form WB and CaB 6 . However, in the absence of a decarburization treatment after the boronization process, carbon-containing WB (C content = 1.2 wt%) and W 2 B 5 (C content = 3.4 wt%) could also be prepared. In addition, it was concluded that the prepared tungsten boride roughly maintained the morphology and particle size of raw W, and ultra-fine tungsten boride could be synthesized with ultra-fine W powder at a low boronization reaction temperature.

Synthesis of high purity nano-sized transition-metal carbides

Ke-Han Wu,Yu Jiang,Shuqiang Jiao,Kuo-Chih Chou,Guo-Hua Zhang

Nano-sized transition-metal carbides with high purities were synthesized by vacuum carbothermal reduction coupled with a novel method for the removal of free carbon by molten calcium treatment. Transition-metals oxides were firstly reduced by excessive carbon black under vacuum condition, and then the obtained product was treated in molten calcium to remove the free carbon. After acidic leaching the product, pure carbides were obtained. The excess carbon in the carbothermic reduction stage could not only increase the contact between reactants and make the reduction more thorough, but also act as barrier to restrict the grain growth of the products. The effects of carbothermic reduction temperature, calcium treatment temperature and particle sizes of oxides on the reaction products were discussed in detail. It was concluded that after carbothermic reduction of corresponding oxides at 1823   K in vacuum and the following calcium treatment at 1173   K, TiC, ZrC, HfC, V 8 C 7 , NbC and TaC with the particle sizes of 100   nm, 70   nm, 130   nm, 200   nm, 150   nm and 120   nm, could be prepared, respectively.

Low-temperature synthesis of single-phase refractory metal compound carbides

Ke-Han Wu,Yu Wang,Kuo-Chih Chou,Guo-Hua Zhang

The compound carbide of refractory metal had great potential applications in ultra-high temperature, biomedical and nuclear fields. In the present study, a novel method composed of vacuum carbothermal reduction followed by calcium treatment was proposed to synthesize single-phase compound carbide. It was found that the required temperature for the formation of single-phase Ta 4 HfC 5 solid solution in liquid calcium was above 1573 K. Meanwhile, the single-phase binary carbides (NbTaC 2 ), ternary carbides (TiNbTaC 3 , ZrNbTaC 3 ), quaternary carbides (TiHfNbTaC 4 , ZrHfNbTaC 4 ), pentanary carbides (TiZrHfNbTaC 5 ) and hexanary carbides (TiZrHfVNbTaC 6 ) were also synthesized by the current method. The formation mechanism of the single-phase compound carbide was discussed and two parameters T SS (based on the mixing enthalpy change and mixing entropy change) and δ a (based on the difference of lattice parameter) were proposed for predicting the formation ability of solid solution. It was found that the necessary conditions for formation of solid solution by current method were T SS  < 1800 K and δ a  < 3.2%. In addition, when the value of T SS was lower than 5.5 × 10 3 ·ln(1/ δ a )-19 × 10 3 , the single-phase compound carbides could be easily synthesized.

Electrical stimulation of neonatal rat cardiomyocytes using conductive polydopamine-reduced graphene oxide-hybrid hydrogels for constructing cardiac microtissues

Xiao-Pei Li,Kai-Yun Qu,Bin Zhou,Feng Zhang,Yin-Ying Wang,Oluwatosin David Abodunrin,Zhen Zhu,Ning-Ping Huang

The development of diversified biomaterials in tissue engineering has been promoted by growing research into carbon-based nanomaterials. Usually, ideal scaffold materials should possess properties similar to the extracellular matrix of natural myocardial tissue. In this study, dopamine-reduced graphene oxide (GO), was prepared and doped into gelatin methacrylate (GelMA) hydrogels, resulting in novel conductive and mechanical properties for controlling cell growth. Cardiomyocytes (CMs) cultured on PDA-rGO-incorporated hydrogels (GelMA-PDA-rGO) had greater cytocompatibility than those cultured on GelMA hydrogels, as evidenced by higher cell survival rates and up-regulation of cardiac-relevant proteins. Finally, electrical stimulation was applied to facilitate the maturation of CMs which was seeded on different hydrogels. The findings revealed that electrical stimulation of conductive hybrid hydrogel scaffolds improved the orientational order parameter of sarcomeres (OOP). In addition, propagation of intercellular pacing signals, which improves the expression of gap junction proteins was noticed, likewise calcium handling capacity was present in conductive hybrid hydrogels compared to those in pure GelMA group. This study has shown that the combination of GelMA-PDA-rGO based conductive hydrogels and electrical stimulation possessed synergistic effects for engineering a more functional and mature myocardium layer as well as further application in drug screening and disease modeling in vitro .

Maturation of induced pluripotent stem cell-derived cardiomyocytes and its therapeutic effect on myocardial infarction in mouse

Peng Wu,Xiyalatu Sai,Zhetao Li,Xing Ye,Li Jin,Guihuan Liu,Ge Li,Pingzhen Yang,Mingyi Zhao,Shuoji Zhu,Nanbo Liu,Ping Zhu

Induced pluripotent stem cell-derived cardiomyocytes (iPSC-CMs) have an irreplaceable role in the treatment of myocardial infarction (MI), which can be injected into the transplanted area with new cardiomyocytes (Cardiomyocytes, CMs), and improve myocardial function. However, the immaturity of the structure and function of iPSC-CMs is the main bottleneck at present. Since collagen participates in the formation of extracellular matrix (ECM), we synthesized nano colloidal gelatin (Gel) with collagen as the main component, and confirmed that the biomaterial has good biocompatibility and is suitable for cellular in vitro growth. Subsequently, we combined the PI3K/AKT/mTOR pathway inhibitor BEZ-235 with Gel and found that the two combined increased the sarcomere length and action potential amplitude (APA) of iPSC-CMs, and improved the Ca 2+ processing ability, the maturation of mitochondrial morphological structure and metabolic function. Not only that, Gel can also prolong the retention rate of iPSC-CMs in the myocardium and increase the expression of Cx43 and angiogenesis in the transplanted area of mature iPSC-CMs, which also provides a reliable basis for the subsequent treatment of mature iPSC-CMs.

Melt-Based Embedded Printing of Macroscopically-Conformal, Electro-Conductive and Elastomeric Patches for Improved Myocardial Infarction Repair

Xiangbin Zeng,Zhenlong Li,Xiao Tan,Zhishuo Ren,Jingyuan Gao,Zijie meng,Dichen Li,Jinhai Fan,Mao Mao,Baolin Guo,Jiankang He

Poly(glycerol sebacate) (PGS) is promising for engineering flexible cardiac patches for myocardial infarction repair due to its unique elasticity. However, its insulating nature and complex thermal curing process hinder existing 3D printing techniques from producing patches that recapitulate the mechanical, electrical, and anatomical features of native myocardium. Here, a melt-based embedded printing strategy enabling direct, freeform fabrication of thermosetting PGS architectures with in situ thermal curing is proposed. The viscoelastic matrix enables high-fidelity extrusion of PGS prepolymer into microscale filaments while providing temporary support for in situ curing of PGS elastomeric architectures with seamless interface fusion and mechanical stability. This platform further allows direct printing of electro-conductive cardiac patches using carbon nanotube-incorporated PGS that mimic ventricular curvature and mechanical anisotropy. Compared to pure PGS controls, the electro-conductive patches enhance cardiomyocyte maturation in vitro, evidenced by improved sarcomere organization, calcium handling, and electrical synchronization. In vivo, these acellular patches improve mechanical integration with host myocardium, promote vascularization, reduce inflammation, and preserve cardiomyocyte survival, collectively maintaining ejection fraction and attenuating adverse remodeling. This work, therefore, establishes a generalizable manufacturing strategy for printing thermosetting elastomeric constructs with integrated conductivity as acellular, mechanically and electrically functional patches for structural cardiac repair.
