In this study, organic silicon was introduced to humic acid for the first time, and set the novel polymer NaHm/AMPS/AM/TSP-L12 (HASSi) as an environmentally friendly filtrate reducing agent, which was developed by using silica modified material (TSP-L12), sodium humic acid (NaHm), 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropanesulfonic acid sodium (AMPS), and acrylamide (AM) as raw materials. The molecular structure, chemical composition of HASSi has been investigated and results show that HASSi shows the chemical structure was conformed to the molecular design. Differential scanning calorimetry–thermogravimetric analysis results illustrate that thermal decomposition temperature of HASSi under nitrogen was 250°C. Though temperature resistance evaluations, HASSi could withstand temperature up to 230°C. Salt and calcium resistance evaluations confirmed its resistance of NaCl could reach up to 5% and CaCl 2 to 0.5%. The filtrate reduce mechanism of HASSi was investigated through various methods, including scanning electron microscope analysis of HASSi aqueous solution, microstructure of filter cake, measurements of zeta potential, and particle size distribution, results showed that HASSi participation in the formation of mud cakes and illustrated an excellent filtration reduction effect. In addition, HASSi was identified as an environmentally friendly filter loss reducing agent through environmental performance evaluation, which shows a great application prospect in oilfield.

Calcium halide-based fluids are often used in drilling and completion operations due to their high density, clay inhibition and low solid content. However, there is a lack of thickeners to promote gel strength, which improves the fluid’s capacity to carry and suspend cuttings. To solve this problem, the branched polymer (hereafter abbreviated as PAD-B) was prepared by the copolymerization of N,N-dimethylacrylamide (DMAM) and 2-acrylamide-2-methylpropane sulfonic acid (AMPS), using polyethylenimine as a branching agent and cerium ammonium nitrate as the initiator. Compared with linear polymer (PAD-L), PAD-B has better shear strength at the same low viscosity. The experimental results indicated that the increase in shear strength of PAD-B is due to the interactions between branched PAD-B molecules, which lead to the formation of a network structure. The effect of calcium chloride (CaCl2) on the rheological performance of PAD-B was investigated at 25 °C and 50 °C. Compared with PAD-L, PAD-B shows better thermal stability and calcium resistance. Its high gel strength provides technical support for addressing issues such as low yield point, gel strength and difficulty in controlling the rheological parameters of calcium halide-based fluids during the drilling and completion of complex wells.

To control the filtration loss of drilling fluids in salt–gypsum formations, a novel type of zwitterionic polymer gel (DNDAP) was synthesized by free radical polymerization, which was used as a salt- and calcium-resistant fluid loss reducer for water-based drilling fluids (WBDF). DNDAP was prepared with N, N-dimethylacrylamide (DMAA), N-vinylpyrrolidone (NVP), Diallyl dimethyl ammonium chloride (DMDAAC), 2-acrylamide-2-methylpropaneonic acid (AMPS), and isopentenol polyether (TPEG) as raw materials. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1H-NMR) were used to characterize the composition and structure of the DNDAP copolymer. The thermal stability of DNDAP was evaluated by the use of thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). WBDF with DNDAP was analyzed for zeta potential and particle size and the corresponding filter cake underwent energy dispersive spectrum (EDS) analysis and scanning electron microscope (SEM) analysis. The results showed that the thermal decomposition of DNDAP mainly occurred above 303 °C. DNDAP exhibits excellent rheological and filtration properties in water-based drilling fluids, even under high-temperature aging (up to 200 °C) and high salinity (20 wt% NaCl or 5 wt% CaCl2) environments. The strong adsorption effect of DNDAP makes the particle size of bentonite reasonably distributed to form a dense mud cake that reduces filtration losses.

The salinity seriously affects the recovery efficiency of surfactant flooding, and it is demonstrated the introduced ethoxy (EO) groups can enhance the interfacial activity of surfactants at harsh salinity via various experimental methods. In this study, sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and sodium dodecyl ether sulfate (AES) are selected to investigate the effects of EO group number on the salt resistance of surfactants at the air/water interface by experiments and molecular dynamics (MD) simulation method. Optical microscopy and static multiple light scattering results show that the AES stabilized emulsions with Ca 2+ ions have better stability than those of SDS, which is further explored by molecular MD simulation method. The interface formation energy (IFE) and self-diffusion coefficients ( D α ) are calculated to systematically study the effects of introduced EO group number on calcium resistance of surfactants. The interaction between surfactants and Ca 2+ ions at the oil/water interface is evaluated by the potential of mean of force (PMF) and the radial direction functions (RDF), which is confirmed by the calculation of molecular electrostatic potential (MEP) and coordination number . The simulation results indicate that the introduced EO groups can combine Ca 2+ ions to fabricate salt bridge via intermolecular or intramolecular interactions to highly improve the calcium resistance of surfactants. The present work proposes a microcosmic perspective of the roles of EO group number on the calcium resistance of AES at the oil/water interface.

Bentonite/water-based drilling fluids (BT-WDFs) suffer serious fluid loss particularly at high temperatures, pressure levels, and divalent cation concentrations. The ionic liquid 1-vinyl-3-ethylimidazolium bromide was introduced to synthesize a filtration control additive (PASV) through free radical copolymerization with acrylamide and 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropanesulfonic acid. The effect of the concentration of the ionic liquid on the filtration property of the fluids was determined at high Ca 2+ concentrations and temperatures. BT-WDFs added with 3.0 wt% copolymer exhibited excellent performance for controlling bivalent Ca 2+ -resistant fluid loss and tolerated the influence of Ca 2+ up to 70 wt%, which approaches the saturation at room temperature (25 °C). As the PASV concentration increased to more than 1.0 wt%, the fluid loss volume was less than 10 mL at room temperature, thereby ensuring safe drilling operation. When the formations drilled were at high temperatures, the filtration control performance was obtained by adding PASV additives. The requisite concentration of PASV varied from 1.5 to 3.0% at 80–150 °C. An extremely dense filter cake was produced because of the elimination of the influence of Ca 2+ on bentonite and the stabilization of the bentonite dispersion state by the PASV copolymer. These effects improved the filtration control performance of BT-WDFs. Moreover, the fluids exhibited shear thinning behavior over the shear rate range of 0.1–1000 s −1 , resulting in improved practical drilling process. This study provides a basis for applying ionic liquids in the design of additives for drilling fluids.

To control the fluid loss of water-based drilling fluids (WBDFs) in salt-gypsum formations, a nano-SiO2 graft copolymer was prepared by inverse emulsion polymerization. The polymer (EAANS) was prepared with acrylamide, 2-acrylamido-2-methyl-1-propane sulfonic acid, N-vinylpyrrolidone, and KH570-modified nano-silica (M-SiO2) as raw materials. The molecular structure and morphology of EAANS were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance, thermogravimetric analysis, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and other methods. In the temperature range of 150 °C, 2 wt % EAANS can reduce the API filtration volume of the base slurry to within 20 mL and the HP-HT filtration volume at 150 °C to 21.8 mL. More importantly, 2 wt % EAANS can maintain the API filtration volume less than 10 mL even when the concentration of NaCl or CaCl2 was as high as 36 or 30 wt %, and as the salt/calcium content increased, the amount of filtration continued to decrease. The results of TEM, X-ray diffraction, particle size distribution, and scanning electron microscopy showed that the fluid loss control mechanism of EAANS was that EAANS can form a crosslinked network structure in the solution and adsorb on the clay surface, so as to reduce the particle size of clay particles, increase the proportion of fine particles in drilling fluids, and finally form a dense filter cake to reduce the filtration volume. Because of the excellent filtration performance of EAANS at high Na+/Ca2+ concentration, EAANS can become a promising WBDF fluid loss reducer in salt-gypsum formations.
