Hydrothermal treatment (HT) can effectively dehydrate and reduce oily sludge (OS) volume, but the resulting hydrothermal oily sludge (HOS) presents greater challenges for washing than the initial oily sludge (IOS). This study examines the effects of HT on OS by analyzing changes in water, oil, and solid. Results indicate that HT considerably decreases the water content in OS while increasing resin and asphaltenes contents. In addition, condensation, side-chain scission, and oxidation reactions occur during the HT process, resulting in coking, agglomeration, and an increase in oxygen-containing groups. This increase, further confirmed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), enhances the interaction between oil and solids. Calcite, the most prevalent solid-phase component, may form a calcium bridge with the oxygen-containing groups. Moreover, HT reduces the solid particle size, thereby increasing the oil–solid contact area. Interestingly, the process of deasphalting diminishes the interaction between oil and solids, facilitating sludge washing. After washing, the residual oil content in HOS is reduced to less than 0.34%. This study elucidates why HOS is challenging to separate from oil and solids and introduces a novel method that combines dodecylbenzene sulfonic acid (DBSA)-assisted heptane deasphalting with conventional washing techniques. This method shows promise for applications in OS affected by weathering processes.

This study aimed to improve the emulsifying properties of microcrystalline cellulose by carboxylating (CC) and bridging to hydrophobic oat globule peptides (HP) via Ca 2+ (CC-Ca-HP). FTIR and XRD spectra analysis proved the successful attachment of HP to CC through a salt bridge. The Ca 2+ -bridging significantly changed the particle characteristics of CC-Ca-HP, including particle size, ζ-potential, and wettability. The Ca 2+ -bridged composite CC-Ca-HP demonstrated remarkable emulsifying stability compared with the nonbridged blend (CC–HP). Further analysis of the steady flow characteristics and dynamic viscoelastic properties revealed a network structure formed in the CC-Ca-HP emulsion. Moreover, the CC-Ca-HP emulsion showed a marked release of free fatty acids, increased bioaccessibility of zeaxanthin in the simulated gastrointestinal digestion, and less oil oxidation under the accelerated oxidation condition, indicating that the stable structure of CC-Ca-HP imparted by Ca 2+ -bridging prevented the aggregation of oil droplets as collision occurred under the harsh gastric conditions.

Water perm-selectivity and membrane fouling are the major challenges faced by nanofiltration (NF) membranes. In this work, a thin film nanocomposite (TFN) membrane with excellent separation and antifouling performances was fabricated by uniformly doping S-Noria (sulfonic Noria, a macrocyclic molecule) in polyamide layer with high loading capacity. S-Noria synthesized by sulfonating Noria with taurine has smaller nanoparticle size of ~5.9 nm and better water dispersion compared with Noria. Therefore, the water permeability of the optimal S-TFN 0.75 membrane can be increased to 2.2 times and 3.4 times that of the Noria-TFN and control TFC membranes, respectively, while maintaining a comparable Na 2 SO 4 rejection of ~98 %. During the dynamic organic fouling tests, the S-TFN 0.75 membrane with higher surface hydrophilicity and surface capacity of sulfonic groups showed milder flux decay and better flux recovery than the control TFC membrane. In addition, the S-TFN 0.75 membranes could more effectively alleviate the membrane fouling exacerbated by “Ca 2+ bridging effect”. In conclusion, this study provides a reliable method for the fabrication of TFN membrane with a high load of S-Noria uniformly dispersed in the polyamide layer, solving the bottleneck problems of water perm-selectivity and membrane fouling.

Fate and transport of nanoplastics in aquatic environments are affected by their heteroaggregation with minerals in the presence of macromolecules. This study investigated the heteroaggregation of polystyrene nanoplastics (PSNPs) with goethite nanoparticles (GNPs) under the influence of macromolecules [humic acid (HA), bovine serum albumin (BSA), and DNA] and electrolytes. Under 1 mg C/L macromolecule, raising electrolyte concentration promoted heteroaggregation via charge screening, except that calcium bridging with HA also enhanced heteroaggregation at CaCl 2 concentration above 5 mM. At all NaCl concentrations and CaCl 2 concentration below 5 mM, 1 mg C/L macromolecules strongly retarded heteroaggregation, ranking BSA > DNA > HA. Raising macromolecule concentration strengthened such stabilization effect of all macromolecules in NaCl solution and that of DNA and BSA in CaCl 2 solution by enhancing steric hindrance. However, 0.1 mg C/L BSA slightly promoted heteroaggregation in CaCl 2 solution due to stronger electrostatic attraction than steric hindrance. In CaCl 2 solution, raising HA concentration strengthened its destabilization effect via calcium bridging. Macromolecules having more compact globular structure and higher molecular weight may exert greater steric hindrance to inhibit heteroaggregation more effectively. This study provides new insights on the effects of macromolecules and electrolytes on heteroaggregation between nanoplastics and iron minerals in aquatic environments.
