Calcium ion (Ca 2+ ) is one of the important nutrients for humans, excessive and insufficient intake may both cause diseases, so that it is of great importance to analysis of Ca 2+ in our daily life. In this work, a portable gas pressure meter-based method was developed for the detection of Ca 2+ in water samples and calcium gluconate oral liquids. Ca 2+ in solution was extracted and precipitated by the addition of Na 2 C 2 O 4 , CaC 2 O 4 precipitate was formed and then filtered from the complicated matrix through a filter membrane. The filter membrane (containing CaC 2 O 4 precipitate) was then treated by H 2 SO 4 solution, CaC 2 O 4 precipitate was dissolved during this step and H 2 C 2 O 4 was formed. In a sealed bottle-in-bottle reaction device, H 2 C 2 O 4 reacted with acidic KMnO 4 solution to generate CO 2 gas, causing a significant gas pressure increase and it was readout by a hand-held pressure meter. A standard curve with linear range of 1–80 mmol L −1 and a limit of detection of 0.4 mmol L −1 were obtained. This system was subsequently applied to the detection of Ca 2+ in several water samples and oral liquids, recoveries of 92–110 % were obtained for their spiked samples. Only a few reaction bottles and a gas pressure meter were required in this system. It is a low-cost, sensitive, rapid and easy-used analytical method for on-site determination of Ca 2+ .

Combining the Microbial-Induced Calcium Carbonate Precipitation (MICP) technique with plants to reinforce calcareous sand slopes on reef islands is expected to achieve both reinforcement and economic benefits. In this study, MICP was combined withFestuca arundinacea(MICP-FA) for calcareous sand reinforcement. Based on water retention and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) tests, the water retention performance and mechanism of MICP-reinforced calcareous sand under different cementation solution concentrations and cementation cycles were analyzed. The growth adaptability ofFestuca arundinaceawas evaluated under different bacteria solution concentrations, cementation solution concentrations and cementation cycles. The engineering applicability of MICP-FA-reinforced calcareous sand was evaluated by wind erosion tests, and the synergistic reinforcement mechanism was analyzed. The results show that with the increase in the cementation solution concentration and cementation cycles, more calcium carbonate filled and adhered to the calcareous sand particles, significantly improving the water retention performance. MICP-FA can enhance the wind erosion resistance of calcareous sand. This synergistic mechanism lies in the surface cementation effect of MICP and the deep anchoring effect of plant roots. This study provides theoretical basis and technical guidance for engineering applications in calcareous sand areas.

Microbiologically induced calcium carbonate precipitation (MICP) is a new technique in environmental geotechnical engineering. Ultrafine particles including nanoparticles consisting of clay particles and organic matter present in the nanometer size range are ubiquitous in sand due to the erosion or chemical reactions of earth minerals. In this paper, nano-SiO 2 (NS) was used to represent nanoparticles and investigate the influence of nanoparticles in soil on MICP. Both MICP in a solution environment and MICP on the surface of quartz sand were investigated. Then, a series of macroscopic and microscopic tests were conducted to investigate the effect mechanism of NS on MICP. It was found that the NS could inhibit the MICP reaction process and promote calcite formation in a solution environment. Conversely, NS could inhibit calcite formation on the quartz sand surface. Besides, the main products of these two cases are quite different: the former is vaterite, while the latter is calcite. In general, the nanoscale silica particles are detrimental to MICP.

Microbial-induced calcium carbonate precipitation (MICP) is an environmentally-friendly and easy operation technique for separating oil-water mixtures. However, the effect of environmental factors on the wettability and oil-water separation performance of MICP remains unclear. In this study, three primary factors including mineralization solution (MS) concentration, bacterial suspension (BS) concentration, and temperature were carefully investigated. Under these varying conditions, stainless steel meshes (SSM) were chosen as the substrates for the growth of CaCO 3 precipitations. Experimental results demonstrate a strong dependence of the morphology and wettability of CaCO 3 precipitations on these factors. Higher MS concentration and temperature contribute to enhanced hydrophilicity of CaCO 3 coatings due to the increased surface roughness . The water flux of MICP-coated SSMs decreases with the increase of BS concentration, MS concentration, and temperature. The MICP-coated SSM obtained with MS concentration of 0.15 M, BS concentration of 0.1 × 10 8 cells/mL, and mineralization reaction at 25 ℃ for 24 hours demonstrated the optimal comprehensive performance, exhibiting underwater superoleophobicity with an underwater oil contact angle (UWOCA) exceeding 151°, an ultra-high oil intrusion pressure (> 3.0 kPa), ultrahigh flux (28,644 L m −2 h −1 ), and a preferable oil rejection rate (> 99.9%). Additionally, the as-prepared mesh exhibited superior anti-oil-fouling property and reusability, while concurrently demonstrating excellent chemical and thermal stability. This work contributes to advancing our knowledge of the influence of various environmental factors on the wetting characteristics of MICP and provides a feasible solution for the highly efficient and low-cost preparation of oil-water separation membranes based on the MICP process.

Microbial induction of carbonate precipitation is common in nature, carbonic anhydrase (CA) secreted by microorganisms plays an important role in catalyzing the precipitation of CaCO3 from CO2. This study investigated how pH and temperature regulate microbial CA production, activity, and structure, and further examined their effects on CaCO3 deposition, steel slag carbon sequestration, and concrete crack healing. The results demonstrated that bacteria efficiently produced CA and maintained its activity over a broad range of alkaline pH levels and temperatures, the optimal conditions pH 9 and 30°C facilitated both bacterial CA production and activity by regulating growth and metabolism. Furthermore, pH and temperature modulated CA activity by altering its secondary structure (α-helices, β-turns) and weakening the enzyme’s active center for CO2 at higher pH, which consequently influenced CaCO3 deposition efficiency. The microbial treatment significantly enhanced carbon fixation in steel slag, with an 18.9% carbon sequestration rate at 48 hours, an 8% increase over the control group. In concrete crack-healing tests, the application of alkali-resistant microorganisms restored water permeability resistance to 93.24% of the original concrete after 28 d of healing. Microbial mineralization technology has great potential in steel slag carbon sequestration and self-healing concrete.

Enzymatically induced carbonate precipitation (EICP) in heterogeneous subsurface is of interest in various geoscience and environmental applications. Through fabricating microfluidic cells with different pore networks, the pore-scale formation of biological CaCO 3 was investigated experimentally by transverse mixing using time lapse high-resolution camera. The precipitation pattern over time was processed to obtain the evolution of distribution of CaCO 3 volume fraction. The impact of flow rate and pore-scale heterogeneity were quantitatively evaluated with reaction index including overall pore filling ratio, precipitation rate and precipitation efficiency. The results showed that low flow rates and strong heterogeneity in porous media are the two favorable conditions for precipitation process due to more nucleation sites. At grain scale, a statistic of three-dimensional morphologies of individual crystals was evaluated with specific surface area and degree of anisotropy. Localized precipitates in multiple pores were adopted as a representative of the whole porous media. The analysis showed that the complex pore structures are generated due to precipitates in pores, thus limiting transport of reactants and result in the permeability reduction. We furthermore confirmed different polymorphs of calcium carbonate, mainly containing vaterite and calcite. Pore-scale analysis of biological CaCO 3 in porous media significantly contributes to the understanding of advection–diffusion-reaction coupling effect, and further revealing the role of pore network on biomineralization process.

Anaerobic biosynthetic crystals (ANBC) were prepared based on microbially induced calcium precipitation (MICP) and their potential explored for groundwater defluoridation and decalcification. The preparation conditions of ANBC were optimized and the influence of key factors (initial fluoride ions (F − ) concentration, pH, and initial calcium ions (Ca 2+ ) concentration) on the crystals was investigated. During the operation of the reactor, at pH of 7.0, the hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 6 h, and Ca 2+ concentration of 180 mg L −1 , a maximum removal efficiency reached 93.31%, while 66.20% of Ca 2+ could be removed. The adsorption dynamics study showed that the adsorption of ANBC was most in line with the pseudo-second-order model. The stability of ANBC operation was studied and failure reaction showed that the crystals maintained a stable removal ability after 35 times of repeated use. Further studies found that this was attributed to the continuous growth and synthesis of the crystals. The defluoridation and decalcification mechanism was further explored by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), and X-ray diffraction spectra (XRD). This study innovatively proposes a method for biosynthesis of crystals under anaerobic conditions based on MICP, which can efficiently and stably remove F − and Ca 2+ in groundwater, providing a valuable strategy for groundwater contaminant remediation and energy saving.

Scaffolds prepared by 3D printing are increasingly used in the field of bone tissue repair. However, on traditional 3D printed bone tissue engineering scaffolds, cells can only grow on the fiber surface and form bone. We designed a scaffold with a cross-scale structure of PCL/β-TCP, which contains thick fibers with a diameter of 500 μm printed by FDM. And in the pores of the coarse fiber, the ultra-high precision fine fiber grid with a diameter of about 10 μm is filled by MEW mode. In cell experiments, cells can not only grow on the thick fiber surface of the cross-scale scaffold. At the same time, the mesh structure of fine fibers provides a bridge for cell growth, allowing cells to pass through the pores of thick fibers and grow in the pores and gradually cover the pores of the scaffold. In the osteoinduction experiment, β-TCP in the PCL/β-TCP composite provides Ca 2+ and PO 4 3− to the scaffold, which effectively promotes the osteogenic differentiation of cells on the scaffold. Compared with traditional scaffolds, the osteogenic performance of cross-scale scaffolds is greatly improved. Not only did bone form on the surface of the scaffold, but also obvious ALP expression and effective calcium precipitation appeared in the pores of the scaffold. This can effectively speed up the repair of bone defects. We believe that the 3D printed PCL/β-TCP cross-scale scaffold with high-precision fibers has great application prospects in the field of bone tissue engineering.

A simultaneous denitrifying and mineralizing bacterium, Pseudomonas sp. WZ39 was isolated for fluoride (F − ), nitrate (NO 3 − -N), and calcium (Ca 2+ ) removal. Strain WZ39 exhibited a remarkable defluoridation efficiency of 87.49% under a pH of 6.90, F − and Ca 2+ concentration of 1.99 and 201.88 mg L −1 , respectively. EEM, SEM–EDS, XRD, and FTIR analyses elucidated the chemical adsorption and co-precipitation with calcium salt contributed to the removal of F − . The mechanisms of biomineralization were also investigated by determining the role of bound and unbound extracellular polymeric substances (EPS), cell wall, and calcium channel in nucleation. The results showed that bacteria can promote nucleation on the templates of cell walls or EPS through the electrostatic effect. The presence of the calcium channel blocker inhibited the transport of intracellular Ca 2+ to the extracellular environment. The outcome of the present research can provide a theoretical basis for the understanding of MICP phenomenon and the efficient treatment of F − containing groundwater.

Microbial-induced calcium carbonate precipitation (MICP), with its hydrophilic rough microstructures and as an environmentally friendly material modification method, has shown great potential for oil-water separation. However, its efficiency in separating oil-in-water emulsions remains challenging. This study advances the MICP method by producing microbially induced nanoscale calcium carbonate on a mesh using calcium acetate instead of traditional calcium chloride, successfully achieving efficient separation of oil-in-water emulsions. The stainless-steel mesh (SSM) after calcium acetate-MICP treatment obtained nano-elliptical flake-like vaterite (vaterite-SSM) and demonstrated superior superhydrophilicity and underwater superoleophobicity compared to the mesh coated with micro-cubic structured calcite (calcite-SSM) treated by calcium chloride-MICP. Notably, vaterite-SSM achieved a flux of up to 309 L·m −2 ·h −1 and an oil rejection rate of over 98.7 % in gravity-driven separation of oil-in-water emulsions, demonstrating significant reusability after 6 cycles. Conversely, calcite-SSM was ineffective in emulsion separation due to coating instability and large particle spacing. Additionally, vaterite-SSM effectively separated various oil-water mixtures, maintaining high performance across 30 separation cycles. This study underscores the important use of calcium acetate in MICP to obtain nano-elliptical flake-like vaterite for efficient oil-water emulsion separation, advancing the promise of MICP as an effective and sustainable method for environmental applications.
