Materials that possess distinguishable superwettability toward oil and water have aroused widespread attention for their application in oil–water separation. Among them, a superoleophobic/superhydrophilic material is considered as the ideal candidate because of its antioil-fouling and water-wetting behavior; however, the fabrication is a challenge and there has been insufficient attention given to multipurpose applications in treating intricate mixtures. Herein, for the first time, a multifunctional superoleophobic/superhydrophilic coating integrated with a photocatalysis property was fabricated by the combination of polarity component-enhanced fluorosurfactant and titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanoparticles. The coating applied on stainless steel mesh preserves the ability to separate immiscible oil–water mixtures, whereas the coated cotton preserves the ability to separate both surfactant-stabilized oil-in-water and water-in-oil emulsions. Notably, benefiting from the photocatalysis property of titanium dioxide, the coating also can be used in liquid purification. Contaminated oil can be separated and purified by a separation–purification process, during which the oil-soluble contamination is degraded under ultraviolet (UV) irradiation. The multipurpose coating provides an alternative solution for oil–water remediations, which has prospects in intricate liquid treatment in industrial and domestic applications.

Solar-driven interfacial evaporation offers a promising sustainable approach to clean water production, leveraging its low carbon footprint and adaptability to diverse environments. Despite advancements in enhancing solar vapor generation rates, inefficient condensation heat dissipation remains a major limitation, reducing overall water collection efficiency. Here, we present a synergistic evaporative cooling and radiative cooling (SECRC) strategy that significantly boosts solar-driven clean water production by effectively dissipating condensation heat. Using a titanium dioxide nanocrystal-coated delignified wood substrate (DW-TiO 2 NC) as the SECRC platform, we achieved a 2.5-fold increase in heat dissipation flux and enhanced vapor diffusion towards the condensation interface. This innovation improved water production efficiency from 0.50 to 0.80. Furthermore, the TiO 2 coating provided exceptional environmental anti-fouling capabilities, maintaining a stable outdoor water collection rate with only ∼9 % reduction after one month of exposure, compared to an 18 % decline in uncoated systems. This all-passive, single-solar-powered SECRC system delivers an efficient, stable, and practical solution to address global clean water challenges, marking a transformative advancement in solar water purification technology.

Lithium cobalt oxide (LCO) has been widely used as a leading cathode material for lithium-ion batteries in consumer electronics. However, unstable cathode electrolyte interphase (CEI) and undesired phase transitions during fast Li+diffusivity always incur an inferior stability of the high-voltage LCO (HV-LCO). Here, an ultra-thin amorphous titanium dioxide (TiO2) coating layer engineered on LCO by an atomic layer deposition (ALD) strategy is demonstrated to improve the high-rate and long-cycling properties of the HV-LCO cathode. Benefitting from the uniform TiO2protective layer, the Li+storage properties of the modified LCO obtained after 50 ALD cycles (LCO-ALD50) are significantly improved. The results show that the average Li+diffusion coefficient is nearly tripled with a high-rate capability of 125 mAh g−1at 5C. An improved cycling stability with a high-capacity retention (86.7%) after 300 cycles at 1C is also achieved, far outperforming the bare LCO (37.9%). The in situ XRD and ex situ XPS results demonstrate that the dense and stable CEI induced by the surface TiO2coating layer buffers heterogenous lithium flux insertion during cycling and prevents electrolyte, which contributes to the excellent cycling stability of LCO-ALD50. This work reveals the mechanism of surface protection by transition metal oxides coating and facilitates the development of long-life HV-LCO electrodes.

Mechanically weak superwetting materials are difficult to apply to real complex environments for efficient crude oil-in-water emulsion separation. Herein, robust TiO2-coated meshes were fabricated by spraying titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO2 P25) and aluminum phosphate (AP) binder suspension on a stainless steel mesh. The AP with inorganic adhesive was developed to enhance the bonding force between nanoparticle coatings and the stainless steel meshes and the detailed interaction mechanism has been comprehensively explained. The robust TiO2-coated meshes show excellent underwater superoleophobicity, even for crude oil. Moreover, the underwater superoleophobic meshes enjoy eminent separation capacity for various oil-in-water emulsions, including crude oil-in-water emulsion, with separation efficiency higher than 99.8% even after 10 cycles. Furthermore, the coated meshes can maintain separation efficiencies of over 99.4% after 500 scratch cycles, sand impact cycles, solvent immersion tests and ultrasonic treatment. The mechanical durability of the mesh causes it to have great prospects in extensive industrial applications and harsh circumstances. In addition, the mesh can be successfully used for degrading organic dyes with high efficiency under UV light irradiation, making it a prospective candidate for wastewater treatment.

Because of their extremely low amount in complex samples, it is quite challenging to accurate determine residues of phosphorus-containing amino-acid-like herbicides (PAAHs) in food products. Here we develop novel core-shell mesoporous silica (CSMS) microspheres coated by titanium dioxide (CSMS@TiO 2 ) for extraction and enrichment of PAAHs in baby foods. After the dispersive solid phase extraction (d-SPE), sheathless capillary electrophoresis-mass spectrometry (sheathless CE-MS) is utilized to achieve efficient separation and sensitive detection. The synthesized CSMS@TiO 2 composites are characterized by various spectroscopic techniques, proving TiO 2 is uniformly distributed onto the channel surface of CSMS. The composites have essential features that are favorable for adsorption of the analytes on the material for d-SPE, including uniform diameter (1.0 μm with a shell thickness of 133 nm), large perpendicular mesopores (15.6 nm), high surface area (101.1 m 2 /g) and large pore volume (0.4 cm 3 /g). Taking glyphosate, glufosinate and their main metabolites (aminomethylphosphonic acid and 3-methylphosphinicopropionic acid) as analytes, selective and efficient enrichment is achieved by CSMS@TiO 2 -based d-SPE through the affinity interaction between titanium dioxide and phosphate groups. Sensitive detection of target compounds is achieved with low limits of quantitation (LOQs) between 0.3–1.6 ng/mL and excellent inter/intra-day repeatability. The compounds in nine different commercial baby foods from local markets are analyzed using the proposed method. Good recoveries of 82.3–102.6% are achieved with low RSDs ( n = 5) of 2.1–8.3%. Our study indicates that the proposed CSMS@TiO 2 -based d-SPE combined with sheathless CE-MS is an accurate and reliable approach for sensitive determination of trace-amount PAAHs and their metabolites in complex samples.
