Most Li+/Na+-conducting solid electrolytes are unstable in moisture, and the formed hydroxides and carbonates on their surfaces result in the increase of the interfacial resistance between solid electrolytes and alkali metal anodes. In this study, heat treatment was used to remove the byproduct coating on the surface of Na3Zr2Si2PO12 (NZSP) that also leads to the generation of Na-ion deficient surface simultaneously. This surface chemistry approach was used to reduce the interfacial resistance and suppress Na-dendrite growth during Na plating. A combination of the metallic Na wetting test, density functional theory, and electrochemical measurement was employed to investigate the origins of ultralow interfacial resistance and mechanism between the Na-ion deficient surface and the metallic Na anode. The analysis demonstrates that the Na-ion-deficient surface effectively improves the contact between NZSP and the metallic Na anode. Moreover, an ultrathin passivating layer involving Na2O was formed between NZSP with metallic Na that protected the NZSP electrolyte from the reduction by metallic Na. This study not only motivates the need for further understanding of the surface chemistry of NZSP but also provides guidelines for the future design of the Na-ion solid–electrolyte interface.

Commercial battery separators (Celgard) have poor wettability, poor heat resistance, and low needle punching strength, and the growth of sodium dendrites can easily pierce the separators, seriously threatening the life and safety of room-temperature sodium-sulfur batteries (RT Na-S). In this work, Polyimide copolymerized with polyether (PI-PEO) membrane was prepared by an electrospinning method. By introducing polyether segments into the polyimide molecular chain and constructing a nanofiber structure, the polarity and fiber structure of the material improved the wettability of the electrolyte, and the toughness of the membrane was improved while ensuring the size stability of the membrane and further resisted the puncture of sodium dendrites. As a result, the battery assembled with the PI-PEO separator exhibits excellent cycle stability. The capacity remains 450 mAh g−1 after 2000 cycles at 3 A g-1. At the same time, the PI-PEO shows a higher ionic conductivity (1.48 mS cm-1), better size stability and electrolyte wettability than Celgard. This work provides a novel and effective method for developing durable room temperature sodium-sulfur batteries.

The sodium (Na) anode suffers severe interfacial resistance and dendrite issues in a classic NASICON-type Na3Zr2Si2PO12 (NZSP) electrolyte, resulting in poor electrochemical performance for solid-state Na metal batteries. There has been little success in the reduction of interfacial resistance in recent years. The exact mechanism of this resistance has not been fully understood because of little information about the interface. In this work, we effectively address the large interfacial resistance issue and the metal dendrite problem between the Na anode and NZSP by introducing a TiO2 film as an active interphase. We employ quasiinsitu X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) to uncover the interphase formation mechanism at the Na/TiO2–NZSP electrolyte interface. Our quasiinsitu XPS results confirm the formation of a sodiated-TiO2 interphase upon stepwise Na evaporation on the surface of the NZSP electrolyte. Further investigation by molten Na contact angle measurements, impedance spectroscopy and DFT calculations demonstrates that the sodiated-TiO2 interphase promotes Na ion transport between the Na anode and NZSP electrolyte. Moreover, the electrostatic potential formed at the NZSP/NaxTiO2 interface can effectively reduce electronic conductivity at the interface and hence prevent the growth of sodium dendrites. A representative paradigm for interphase design is provided to address the interface contact for developing stable solid-state batteries with high performance.

Sodium metal is considered a potential candidate for the anode in next-generation cost-effective and high-energy-density metal batteries. However, its practical application in ether-based electrolytes is severely hindered by the uncontrolled proliferation of sodium dendrites and the instability of the solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) layer. To address these challenges, we developed a lightweight, multifunctional separator using electrospinning technology. This separator, composed of a polymer-metal-organic framework composite (PAN/ZIF-67), offers a novel alternative to conventional bulky glass fiber separators. The PAN/ZIF-67 separator features a unique ordered structure and open active metal sites, which significantly enhance electrolyte wettability and promote anion adsorption, effectively guiding the uniform deposition of Na + . Experimental results confirmed its superior electrochemical performance, including low polarization voltage and high cycling stability, under standard ether-based electrolyte conditions without additives. In symmetric Na || Na cells equipped with the PAN/ZIF-67 separator, exceptional cycling stability was achieved, with a low polarization voltage of ∼12 mV at 1 mA cm −2 sustained over 1000 h and ∼66 mV at 5 mA cm −2 for over 500 h. In a full cell with a Na₃V₂(PO₄)₃ cathode and Na anode, the separator demonstrated excellent rate capability and cycling stability, maintaining a capacity retention of 72.4 % after 800 cycles at 5C. This work offers a possible solution to address critical issues in sodium metal batteries and represents a notable advancement toward their practical applications.

The energy density of batteries can be increased by using high-load cathode material matched with sodium (Na) metal anode. However, the large polarization of the battery under such harsh conditions will promote the growth of Na dendrites and side reactions. Carbon materials are regarded as ideal modify layers on Na metal anode to regulate the Na + plating/stripping behavior and inhibit the Na dendrites and side reactions due to their light weight, high stability and structural adjustability. However, commonly used carbon nanotubes and carbon nanofibers cannot enable these modified Na metal anodes to operate stably in full batteries with a high-load cathode (> 15 mg·cm −2 ). The most fundamental reason is that abundant polar functional groups on the surface bring serious side reactions and agglomerations lead to uneven Na + flow. Here, a proof-of-concept study lies on fabrications of carbon nanospheres with small amount of polar functional groups and sodiophobic components on the surface of Na metal anode, which significantly enhances the uniformity of the Na + plating/stripping. The assembled symmetric battery can cycle stability for 1300 h at 3 mA·cm −2 /3 mAh·cm −2 . The full battery with high-load Na 3 V 2 (PO 4 ) 3 (30 mg·cm −2 ) maintains a Coulombic efficiency of 99.7% after 100 cycles.

The key to practical applications of sodium (Na) metal batteries is to develop high-performance Na metal anode. However, the unstable electrode/electrolyte interface induced by the Na dendrite growth severely shortens the working life of Na metal anode. In this work, we have developed a facile method based on a replacement reaction to construct an Ag metal layer for Na metal electrodes. The presence of robust and sodiophilic Ag metal layer can guide the uniform plating and stripping of Na ions on the surface of Na metal anode and effectively suppress the Na dendrite growth. Benefiting from a stable electrode/electrolyte interface, the increase of interfacial resistance of the Ag-protected Na metal (Na@Ag) electrode is significantly lower than that of the bare Na electrode after repeated plating/stripping. As a result, the symmetric cell with two identical Na@Ag electrodes exhibits superior cycling stability with stable over-potentials for more than 1100 h at a current density of 1 mA cm −2 and good rate performance with an over-potential of 210 mV at a current density of 5 mA cm −2 compared to the symmetric cell with two identical bare Na electrodes. Moreover, the full cell with an NaTi 2 (PO 4 ) 3 (NTP) cathode and an Na@Ag anode maintains good cycling stability with a capacity retention of 93.8% after 600 cycles, while the Na||NTP full cell breaks down in the 243th cycle.

Room temperature sodium-sulfur (RT Na-S) batteries are considered as advanced energy storage technology due to their low cost and high theoretical energy density. However, challenges such as the growth of sodium dendrite and dissolution of sodium polysulfides significantly hinder the electrochemical performance. Herein, we developed a propylene carbonate (PC)-based electrolyte with Methyl 2-Fluoroisobutyrate (MFB) as an additive. The ester group in the MFB additive is capable of participating in and reconfiguring the coordination of their Na + solvated structures, thereby lowering the desolvation barrier and regulating the Na anode’s interfacial reaction and nucleation behavior. The polar C−F bond at the other end helps to reduce the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) energy of the MFB additive, enabling the preferential decomposition of MFB to form the F-rich inorganic phase strong polar solid electrolyte interphase (SEI), contributing to the inhibition of Na dendrite growth, the accumulation of dead Na. In addition, NaF-riched cathode electrolyte interphase (CEI) was also observed on sulfur-based cathode, which can effectively inhibited the shuttle effect. Consequently, the developed RT Na-S battery exhibit excellent electrochemical performance.

Electrolyte additives have an important impact on the cycling stability of sodium metal batteries , but their applications are severely impeded by the poor compatibility with different electrolytes. Herein, rational incorporation of nitro groups on fullerene (C 60 ) cage yields nitrofullerene (C 60 (NO 2 ) 6 ) as an effective additive, which displays high compatibility with different electrolytes and can enable highly reversible and dendrite-free plating/stripping of sodium metal anodes (SMAs). In-situ optical observation of Na electrodeposition confirms a great improvement in the cycling stability of metallic Na anodes with the C 60 (NO 2 ) 6 additive, which not only promotes the formation of stable protective layers on SMAs, but also facilitates the uniform Na deposition and effectively suppresses the Na dendrite growth. As a result, the Na||Na symmetrical cells with C 60 (NO 2 ) 6 show low voltage hysteresis , high rate capability and prolonged cycle life in both carbonate and ether electrolytes. Even at 5 mA cm –2 and 5 mAh cm –2 , the Na||Cu half cells can stably cycle over 450 h in the ether electrolyte. Furthermore, a significantly improved cycling stability of the high loading Na||Na 3 V 2 (PO 4 ) 3 @C (8.7 mg cm –2 ) full cell is achieved in the carbonate electrolyte.

Sodium metal battery is considered as one of the most promising energy storage/conversion devices due to their high energy density, and abundant sodium reserves. However, its development is hampered by the limited metallic utilization and detrimental sodium dendrite growth ascribed to the unstable, and fragile solid electrolyte interphase (SEI). Here, the high stable and modulus SEI is constructed with a component of a thin and dense layer of high Na-ion conductive Na 2 SiO 3 . It is in situ formed by the reaction between sodium anode and fish-skin structure separator, which exhibits a 3D porous polyvinylidene fluoride-based framework embedded with thin and robust vermiculite sheets. The robust interphase cannot only suppress sodium dendrite growth but also enable high energy density with small interphase-consumed Na ions in anode-less batteries. Accordingly, the as-assembled NaNi 1/3 Fe 1/3 Mn 1/3 O 2 //Na cell shows 83% capacity retention after 5000 cycles at a rate of 5 °C. Moreover, the proof-of-concept pouch cells deliver an energy density of 205 Wh kg −1 (based on the total mass of the battery), and high safety (not catching fire after punctured) under anode-less condition (with a low negative/positive capacity ratio of ≈2.1).

Anode-free sodium batteries (AFSBs) have attracted increasing attention for their high energy density. However, they suffer from rapid capacity decline resulting from sodium dendrite growth at the sodium/host interface and irreversible side reactions at the electrolyte/sodium interface. Herein, a GaInSn-coated Cu foil (G-Cu), prepared by a simple brush coating method, was applied as the sodiophilic current collector to regulate sodium nucleation behavior. In addition, a nonexpendable functional electrolyte additive, hexamethyldisiloxane (HMDSO), was introduced, which could be absorbed on the sodium surface and serve as a protective layer against corrosion side reactions at the electrolyte/sodium interface. It is interesting to note that this additive barely participated in forming the solid electrolyte interphase. The synergetic effects of sodiophilic interface design and electrolyte regulation enable reversible sodium plating and stripping. Ultimately, the AFSB assembled using G-Cu and HMDSO electrolyte with a highly loaded Na 3 V 2 (PO 4 ) 3 cathode (≈12.5 mg cm −2 ) delivers a discharge capacity of 84.5 mAh g −1 after 200 cycles with a high capacity retention of 87.6%, significantly extending its operation lifespan.

Low-cost sodium metal batteries are expected to be used as an effective supplement to lithium-ion batteries in the energy storage field in the future, and have made great progress in recent years. However, the safety issues caused by Na dendrites and the relatively low specific capacity of sodium metal batteries are obstacles to their further commercialization. In this work, a thin Na-Ti 3 C 2 T x composite anode was prepared. The thickness of the composite anode Na-Ti 3 C 2 T x is only 46% of that of pure sodium, greatly reducing costs and increasing energy density. In addition, the nucleation overpotential of Na-Ti 3 C 2 T x is 55.2% and 56% that of Na at 0.5 mA cm −2 and 2 mA cm −2 respectively, which indicates that the composite anode reduces the sodium nucleation barrier and is favorable for sodium deposition. Furthermore, the poly (vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene) (PVDF-HFP) and Na 3 Zr 2 Si 2 PO 12 modified polyimide membrane significantly enhances the mechanical strength and sodium ion migration and promoted the deposition and stripping of metallic sodium. The sodium battery with the composite metal sodium anode and PVDF-HFP-Na 3 Zr 2 Si 2 PO 12 modified polyimide membrane has a specific discharge capacity of 87.9 mAh g −1 , and the capacity retention rate is close to 100% without significant fluctuation after 500 cycles.

NASICON oxide solid electrolytes are considered promising candidates for all-solid-state sodium batteries due to their extremely high ionic conductivity and favorable electrochemical stability. However, the practical application of NASICON electrolytes is greatly impeded by poor electrolyte–electrode interfacial contact and continuous sodium dendrite propagation. Herein, a NaF-rich multifunctional interface layer on the surface of a Na anode (Na@NaF-rich), containing NaF, amorphous carbon, and an unreacted C–F bond species, is developed in situ by the reaction between Na and commercial poly(tetrafluoroethylene). This NaF-rich interface layer is proven to reduce the diffusion barriers at the Na/NASICON electrolyte interface and homogenize Na deposition as well as suppress Na dendrite growth, thus achieving a high critical current density of 4 mA cm–2. The resultant Na3V2(PO4)3@C/Na@NaF-rich all-solid-state cell showed a high initial specific capacity of 117.6 mAh g–1 at 0.1 C with a Coulombic efficiency of 94.8%. Even at 0.5 and 1 C, it still exhibited high capacity retentions of 83.3% and 80.4%, respectively, after 750 cycles.
