Proper draw solution is a crucial factor to generate a high performance in FO process. In this study, a phytic acid and its salt (PA-Na) were evaluated as novel draw solutes in FO process. The effects of the solution pH and concentration on the physicochemical properties were investigated systematically. Using 0.45 M PA-Na draw solution (pH = 7) and DI water feed solution, a relative high water flux of 19.02 LMH and a low solute flux of 0.51 gMH can be obtained, with HTI-TFC membrane in the PRO mode. An even better performance of a 30.35 LMH water flux and a 0.61 gMH solute flux can be achieved using the self-made HPAN-TFC membrane. The comparison of PA-Na and NaCl draw solutions shows that PA-Na draw solution has a much lower draw solute leakage and a competitive water flux. In addition, the application of PA-Na draw solution for the brackish water desalination was explored. The diluted PA-Na draw solution after FO may be used directly in food production by further dilution. In general, the non-toxicity and satisfactory FO performance of this food additive demonstrate its great potential as a draw solute for FO applications.

Developing effective modification methods and obtaining a comprehensive understanding of adsorption mechanisms are essential for the practical application of biochars for the removal of heavy metals from solutions. In this study, rice straw was impregnated with sodium phytate and pyrolyzed at 350 °C, 450 °C, and 550 °C to synthesize modified biochars (i.e., MBC350, MBC450, and MBC550). The Cd(II) adsorption capacities and contributions of different mechanisms, including the effects of biochar-derived dissolved organic matter (BDOM), were investigated using batch sorption experiments and characterization analyses. The modification of sodium phytate promoted the pyrolysis of biomass, thereby increasing the BDOM content and aromatic structures at low and high pyrolysis temperatures, respectively. Moreover, the modification also increased the exchangeable Na + and carbonate contents in the modified biochars. Compared with the raw biochars, the Cd(II) adsorption capacities of modified biochars increased by 3.3–4.3 times, and MBC550 had the highest Cd(II) adsorption capacity (126.5 mg/g), of which precipitation with minerals and interaction with π-electrons contributed 41.7% and 45.8%, respectively. However, at a lower pyrolysis temperature, the Cd(II) adsorption attributed to ion exchange and co-deposition with BDOM significantly increased, especially on MBC350 (33.9 and 12.6 mg/g, respectively). These results indicate that modification by sodium phytate effectively enhanced various adsorption mechanisms, thereby increasing the Cd(II) adsorption capacity. In addition, the contribution of co-deposition with BDOM to adsorption was unneglectable for the biochars pyrolyzed at low temperatures.

Wood has the characteristics of shrinkage and swelling, flammability, and insulation, which can lead to poor user experience and accidents during its application in wood structure buildings and wood products. In this study, multifunctional chitosan/sodium phytate/TiO2-CuO nanoparticle composite coatings were sprayed on a wood surface through spray-assisted layer-by-layer (SP-LBL) self-assembly. By designing different spraying distances and other process parameters combined with a surface resistance test, thermogravimetric analysis, and combustion test, the antistatic and flame-retardant properties of modified wood were investigated. Antistatic property test results confirmed a positive effect between TiO2 and CuO nanoparticles on discharging electrostatic charge. Moreover, the surface resistance value of the wood remained unchanged after 15 days of spraying treatment. Additionally, the antistatic stability of the composite coatings was more effective in the short-term application. However, long-term stability needs to be observed. The results of thermogravimetric analysis and combustion test confirmed that chitosan, sodium phytate, and TiO2-CuO nanoparticles synergically improved the flame retardant of wood.

Natural gas holds enormous potential in the low-carbon transition of the global energy system, but the risk of explosions from gas leaks poses severe threats to life and property. In this study, sodium phytate and carbamide were introduced as active components, and through hydrogen bonding and ionic interactions between sodium alginate and k-carrageenan, a bio-based modified gel dry water powder (PC-GDW) was prepared and applied for the suppression of 9.5 % methane (CH 4 )-air mixture explosions. The results demonstrate that the physical performance and explosion suppression effect of dry water (DW) could be improved by optimizing the core solutions and gels. CO 2 -driven with 12 g of PC-GDW effectively weakened the energy generated by the CH 4 explosion and dissipated the reflected pressure wave, thus preventing the explosion flame from propagating to the rear of the suppression zone. Compared with the CH 4 explosion without any suppression, the peak temperature ( T p ) decreased by 94.8 %, while the maximum explosion pressure ( P max ) and maximum rise rate of pressure ((d p /d t ) max ) were reduced by 62.5 % and 71.8 %, respectively. Moreover, the synergistic suppression mechanism of the multiphase system was revealed. This work confirms that PC-GDW is a green and renewable explosion suppression material with potential applications in gas transportation and utilization.

Flame retardant cotton fabrics were prepared based on 3-aminopropyl triethoxysilane (APTES) and sodium phytate through layer-by-layer assembly. The structure, surface morphologies before and after burning, flame retardant and thermal degradation properties of prepared cotton fabrics were examined by Fourier transform infrared analysis, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), vertical burning, cone calorimeter, thermogravimetric analysis coupled with Fourier transform infrared analysis (TG-FTIR). SEM results indicated that the product of APTES hydrolysis and sodium phytate were deposited uniformly on the surface of cotton fabrics. In the vertical burning test, after removing the ignition source, the coated cotton fabrics with 15BL extinguished at once, while the uncoated cotton fabrics were burned out, remaining only a little ash. The improved fire retardancy was due to the formed thermally stable residual char on the surface of cotton fabrics, which prevented mass/heat transfer. It is noted from TG-FTIR results that coated cotton fabrics released more H 2 O and CO 2 , and less inflammable gases than those of uncoated cotton fabrics.
