Sodium formate (SF) is regarded as a technological additive to improve H 2 generation upon HCOOH dehydrogenation. The development of SF as a hydrogen storage material is still a challenge. Herein, we report the design and synthesis of carbon nanosphere-stabilized Pd nanoparticles (Pd/CNS) for the direct H 2 generation upon SF hydrolysis in the presence of Fe 3+ . The tandem reaction, isotopic mass spectrometry, and gas chromatograms result confirmed that SF hydrolysis generates H 2 with one H atom provided by SF and other H by H 2 O. The kinetic study and detailed mechanistic investigations have demonstrated that the concerted process between the cleavage of O-H bond in H 2 O and -O 2 C-H bond oxidative addition is the rate-controlling step in SF hydrolysis. This work offers a new chemical hydrogen storage material (HCOONa) for the high-efficiency generation, transport, and storage of H 2 .
The preparation of thin metal-organic framework (MOF) membranes by seeded secondary growth method is still a challenge. In this study, relatively thin ZIF-8 membranes with high gas separation performance on alumina hollow fibers are prepared in autoclaves with thick-walled Teflon-liners by the seeded secondary growth method under the modulation of sodium formate. The ZIF-8 membrane thickness can be greatly decreased and the cracks in the membrane layer can be avoided by using thick-walled Teflon-liner (e.g., 7.5 mm) during secondary growth mainly due to the slow heating and cooling of the synthesis solution, which can control the nucleation rate and growth rate of crystals, leading to an appropriate membrane formation rate. A certain amount of sodium formate can introduce ZnO particles in the seed layer to improve the formation of dense ZIF-8 membrane layer and control the growth rate of membrane layer. The suitable amount of sodium formate and thick-walled Teflon-liner are crucial in ensuring the well-intergrowth of relatively thin ZIF-8 membranes. Owing to reduced grain boundary defects, the prepared ZIF-8 membranes show an ideal H 2 /N 2 separation selectivity of 30.9 ± 1.8, which is at least twice the highest value reported in the literature under similar separation conditions.
The micro-nano structures were successfully fabricated on Al-Li alloy by adjusting the concentration of sodium formate and controlling the hydrothermal temperature though hydrothermal treatment. The growing directions and morphologies for micro-nano structures were studied. The results show the micro-nano structures were a mixture of AlOOH and Al(OH) 3 with good crystallinity, the intensity of diffraction peaks increases with the increase of sodium formate concentration, and the growing direction of micro-nano structure varied from (2 0 0) at 110 °C and 130 °C to (1 1 1) at 150 °C. The morphologies of the micro-nano structures exhibit patterned surface with overlapping leaf-like nano-plates at 110 °C and 130 °C, nordstandite is predominant, flower-like at 150 °C,aluminum oxide hydroxide is predominant. These findings directly demonstrate that the preferential growing direction and the morphologies of micro-nano structure has been confirmed with the concentration of sodium formate and the hydrothermal temperature.

Gold nanoparticles supported on four different metal oxides were prepared and applied in the chemoselective reduction of 4,4′-dinitrostilbene-2,2′-disulfonic acid (DNS). With sodium formate as hydrogen source, > 99% of the DNS was transformed into 4,4′-diaminostilbene-2,2′-disulfonic acid (DSD) without the reduction of olefinic group, which uncovers a clean synthetic approach for useful amino substituted stilbene sulfonic acids.
