Commercial battery separators (Celgard) have poor wettability, poor heat resistance, and low needle punching strength, and the growth of sodium dendrites can easily pierce the separators, seriously threatening the life and safety of room-temperature sodium-sulfur batteries (RT Na-S). In this work, Polyimide copolymerized with polyether (PI-PEO) membrane was prepared by an electrospinning method. By introducing polyether segments into the polyimide molecular chain and constructing a nanofiber structure, the polarity and fiber structure of the material improved the wettability of the electrolyte, and the toughness of the membrane was improved while ensuring the size stability of the membrane and further resisted the puncture of sodium dendrites. As a result, the battery assembled with the PI-PEO separator exhibits excellent cycle stability. The capacity remains 450 mAh g−1 after 2000 cycles at 3 A g-1. At the same time, the PI-PEO shows a higher ionic conductivity (1.48 mS cm-1), better size stability and electrolyte wettability than Celgard. This work provides a novel and effective method for developing durable room temperature sodium-sulfur batteries.

Room-temperature (RT) sodium–sulfur (Na–S) batteries hold great promise for large-scale energy storage due to the advantages of high energy density, low cost, and resource abundance. The research progress on RT Na–S batteries, however, has been greatly hindered by the sluggish kinetics of the sulfur redox reactions. Herein, an elaborate multifunctional architecture, consisting of N-doped carbon skeletons and tunable MoS 2 sulfiphilic sites, is fabricated via a simple one-pot reaction followed by in situ sulfurization. Beyond the physical confinement and chemical binding of polarized N-doped carbonaceous microflowers, the MoS 2 active sites play a key role in catalyzing polysulfide redox reactions, especially the conversion from long-chain Na 2 S n (4 ≤ n ≤ 8) to short-chain Na 2 S 2 and Na 2 S. Significantly, the electrocatalytic activity of MoS 2 can be tunable via adjusting the discharge depth. It is remarkable that the sodiated MoS 2 exhibits much stronger binding energy and electrocatalytic behavior compared to MoS 2 sites, effectively enhancing the formation of the final Na 2 S product. Consequently, the S cathode achieves superior electrochemical performance in RT Na–S batteries, delivering a high capacity of 774.2 mAh g −1 after 800 cycles at 0.2 A g −1 , and an ultrahigh capacity retention with a capacity decay rate of only 0.0055% per cycle over 2800 cycles.

The practical applications of room-temperature sodium-sulfur (RT Na-S) batteries have been greatly hindered by the natural sluggish reaction kinetics of sulfur and the shuttle effect of sodium polysulfide (NaPSs). Herein, oxygen vacancy (OV)-mediated amorphous GeO x /nitrogen doped carbon (donated as GeO x /NC) composites were well designed as sulfur hosts for RT Na–S batteries. Experimental and density functional theory studies show that the introduction of oxygen vacancies on GeO x /NC can effectively immobilize polysulfides and accelerate the redox kinetics of polysulfides. Meanwhile, the micro-and mesoporous framework, acting as a reactor for storing active S, is conducive to alleviating the expansion of S during the charging/discharging process. Consequently, the S@GeO x /NC cathode affords a reversible capacity of 1017 mA h g −1 at 0.1 A g −1 after 100 cycles, outstanding rate capability of 333 mA h g −1 at 10.0 A g −1 and long lifespan cyclability of 385 mAh g −1 at 1 A g −1 after 1200 cycles. This work furnishes a new way for the rational design of metal oxides with oxygen vacancies and boosts the application for RT Na-S batteries.

Room-temperature sodium-sulfur (RT Na-S) batteries have been attracting enormous interests due to their low-cost, high capacity and environmental benignity. However, the shuttle effect and the sluggish electrochemical reaction activity of sodium polysulfides (NaPSs) seriously restrict their practical application. To solve these issues, we rationally designed an advanced Sn-doped In 2 S 3 /S/C cathode for RT Na-S batteries by magnetron sputtering in this work, which exhibited a high reversible capacity (1663.5 mAh g −1 at 0.1 A g −1 ) and excellent cycling performance (902.9 mAh g −1 after 50 cycles). The in situ electrochemical impedance spectroscopy indicated that the Sn-doped In 2 S 3 coating can accelerate charge-transfer kinetics and facilitate the diffusion of Na + . Furthermore, theoretical calculation revealed that doping of Sn into In 2 S 3 can reduce the energy band gap, thus accelerating the electron transfer and promoting the electrochemical conversion of active species. It is demonstrated that adjusting the electronic structure is a reliable method to improve the electrocatalytic effect of catalyst and significantly improve the performance of S cathode in RT Na-S batteries.

Room temperature sodium-sulfur (Na-S) batteries hold great promise as the next-generation cost-effective energy storage systems. However, their practical implementation is still plagued by the low reversible capacity of a bulk-sized commercial sulfur cathode with low Coulombic efficiency and poor cycling stability. Here, we report a highly stable room temperature Na-S battery using a facile-processed, nanocarbon-promoted, bulk-sized commercial sulfur cathode and a polymer electrolyte. This processed nanocarbon possesses a high binding affinity to sulfur and polysulfides, largely facilitating the sulfur reaction kinetics and leading to high reversible capacity. Meanwhile, by applying a thin coating of the facile-processed nanocarbon on the polymer electrolyte, dead sulfur formation can be avoided, contributing to greatly enhanced capacity retention. Our Na-S battery delivers a reversible capacity of >700 mAh g −1 with near-100% Coulombic efficiency and the ultrahigh capacity retention of 98.2% at 0.2C after 200 cycles.

The construction of highly conductive structures with excellent adsorption–catalytic properties to accelerate electron transfer and suppress polysulfide shuttle is considered as an effective strategy to achieve well-performing sodium–sulfur batteries. Herein, a self-supported tessellated N-doped carbon/CoSe2 (NCCS) is developed as a sulfur host for sodium–sulfur batteries by a simple deposition–selenization of lyophilized bacterial cellulose (BC), where NC acts as a conductive network to ensure the rapid initiation of efficient catalytic reactions at the tessellated CoSe2 interface and maintain good structural stability. The CoSe2 nanoparticles provide strong ability in anchoring, trapping and catalyzing polysulfides. As a result, the prepared tessellated NCCS@S cathode demonstrates a high initial discharge specific capacity of 871.3 mA h g−1 at a current rate of 0.1C and good electrochemical stability for up to 500 cycles at 1C.

Room-temperature sodium–sulfur (RT Na–S) batteries are widely considered as one of the alternative energy-storage systems with low cost and high energy density. However, the both poor cycle stability and capacity are two critical issues arising from low conversion kinetics and sodium polysulfides (NaPSs) dissolution for sulfur cathodes during the charge/discharge process. Herein, we report a highly stable RT Na–S battery cathode via building heterostructures in multichannel carbon fibers. The TiN-TiO2@MCCFs, fabricated by electrospinning and nitriding techniques, are loaded with the active material S, forming S/TiN-TiO2@MCCFs as the cathode in a RT Na–S battery. At 0.1 A g–1, the cathode produces the capacity of more than 640 mAh g–1 within 100 cycles with a high Coulombic efficiency of nearly 100%. Even at 5 A g–1, the battery still exhibites a capacity of 257.1 mAh g–1 after 1000 cycles. Combining structural and electrochemical analyses with the first-principles calculations reveals that the incorporation of the highly electrocatalytic activity of TiN with the powerful chemisorption of TiO2 well stabilizes S and also alleviates the shuttle effects of polysulfides. This work with simple processes and low cost is expected to promote the further development and application of metal–S batteries.

Graphical Try to set the night on fire : a nonflammable electrolyte for room-temperature sodium-sulfur (RT Na-S) batteries is prepared by introducing trimethyl phosphate (TMP) into 1.0 M NaClO 4 -ethylene carbonate/ propylene carbonate (EC/PC) electrolyte. With 15 wt.% TMP-contained electrolyte the C/S electrode shows excellent cycling stability with a reversible capacity of 788 mAh g −1 after 80 cycles as well as a good rate performance. To address the safety concern for room-temperature sodium-sulfur batteries, such as fires easily triggered by organic electrolytes, an applicable non-flammable electrolyte formula was developed by introducing trimethyl phosphate (TMP) into 1.0 M NaClO 4 -ethylene carbonate/propylene carbonate electrolyte. It is demonstrated that the electrolyte containing 15 wt.% TMP was a optimized formula, exhibiting nonflammability, thermal stability, electrochemical compatibility and lasting cell performance. Using this optimized electrolyte formula, the sulfur cathode exhibited a stable capacity of 788 mAh g −1 at a rate of 0.1 C and excellent rate capability of 441 and 177 mAh g −1 for 200 cycles at rates of 1 C and 5 C , respectively. When the TMP content further increases to 25 wt.%, the specific capacity of batteries declined significantly due to unstable SEI. Our study can shed light on the development of flame-retardant electrolyte for room-temperature sodium-sulfur or other batteries.

Sodium | |sulfur batteries hold great promise for grid-scale energy storage, yet their performance is hindered by the shuttling and sluggish redox of sulfur species. Herein, we report a strategic design of sulfur hosts modified with coordinatively unsaturated iron single-atom (Fe‒N x ) for sodium | |sulfur batteries. Utilizing theoretical calculations, geometric descriptor γ ( l Na‒S / l Fe‒N ) and electronic descriptor φ ( e g / t 2g ) simultaneously correlated with the unsaturation degree of Fe‒N x site are proposed. A negative correlation between γ and the adsorption strength of sodium polysulfides, along with a positive correlation between φ and the decomposition capability of Na 2 S are established. The Fe‒N 1 sites, with the minimum γ and maximum φ values, are identified as the optimal functional species for optimizing polysulfides behaviors. Sodium | |sulfur batteries utilizing Fe‒N 1 /S positive electrodes deliver improved sulfur utilization (81.4% at 167.5 mA g ‒1 ), sustained rate performance (1003.0 mAh g ‒1 at 1675 mA g ‒1 ), and stable cycling (83.5% retention over 450 cycles at 3350 mA g ‒1 ). Moreover, Fe‒N 1 /S positive electrodes enable sodium | |sulfur pouch cells to deliver a sulfur utilization of 77.4% (1296.9 mAh g ‒1 ) at 0.1 A g ‒1 . Our work offers a strategy for designing high-activity, fast redox sulfur positive electrodes and validates the practical potential of sodium | |sulfur batteries.

Room temperature sodium-sulfur (RT Na-S) batteries are considered as advanced energy storage technology due to their low cost and high theoretical energy density. However, challenges such as the growth of sodium dendrite and dissolution of sodium polysulfides significantly hinder the electrochemical performance. Herein, we developed a propylene carbonate (PC)-based electrolyte with Methyl 2-Fluoroisobutyrate (MFB) as an additive. The ester group in the MFB additive is capable of participating in and reconfiguring the coordination of their Na + solvated structures, thereby lowering the desolvation barrier and regulating the Na anode’s interfacial reaction and nucleation behavior. The polar C−F bond at the other end helps to reduce the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) energy of the MFB additive, enabling the preferential decomposition of MFB to form the F-rich inorganic phase strong polar solid electrolyte interphase (SEI), contributing to the inhibition of Na dendrite growth, the accumulation of dead Na. In addition, NaF-riched cathode electrolyte interphase (CEI) was also observed on sulfur-based cathode, which can effectively inhibited the shuttle effect. Consequently, the developed RT Na-S battery exhibit excellent electrochemical performance.

Sulfurized polyacrylonitrile (SPAN) has been comprehensively studied as a promising electrode material for sodium–sulfur batteries . However, problems such as low capacity and poor cycle stability still exist in room temperature sodium–sulfur batteries (RT-Na/S batteries). Here, a multi-channel sulfurized polyacrylonitrile (MSPAN) with hollow structure prepared by electrospinning technology was combined with polystyrene (PS) acting as a pore-forming agent, which not only provided a larger specific surface area and enlarged contact between electrode and electrolyte, but also limited the shuttling of polysulfides effectively, thereby improving the reversible specific capacity and rate performance of the electrodes. Through comparing the electrochemical performances of MSPAN on different current collectors, it was found that copper foil as the current collector favored the electrochemical performances of the materials. As a result, the MSPAN-2 used as the cathode for RT-Na/S batteries exhibited a high discharge specific capacity of 314.2 mAh g −1 at a current density of 2 A g −1 . The fabrication of MSPAN provides a good example for improving the electrochemical performance of RT-Na/S batteries.

Room-temperature sodium–sulfur batteries are potential candidate for sustainable large-scale energy storage systems due to their high energy density and low cost. However, the shuttling effect of high-order polysulfides (Na 2 S n , 4 < n ≤ 8) usually leads to rapid capacity fading, while the reaction kinetics of low-order polysulfides (Na 2 S n , 1 ≤ n ≤ 4) are slow. In this work, microporous-mesoporous carbon derived from mangosteen peels is reported as cathode materials for RT Na–S batteries. The designed micro-mesoporous structure not only effectively suppresses the shuttling effect of sodium polysulfides (NaPS), but also has high electrical conductivity and porosity, which facilitates electron/ion diffusion. Oxygen functional groups on the surface provide high catalytic activity for efficient low-order NaPS conversion. The obtained Na–S battery exhibits high reversible capacity with excellent long-term cycle performance (526.1 mAh g −1 at 4 A g −1 after 1000 cycles) and outstanding rate performance (676.59 mAh g −1 at 16 A g −1 ). This work demonstrates a novel activation strategy of biomass-derived carbons for high-performance Na–S batteries.
