Stabilizing the reactive metal anode is a critical challenge for the development of next-generation alkali metal batteries. This work demonstrates that sodium-difluoro(oxalato)borate (NaDFOB)-based carbonate-ester electrolytes have excellent compatibility with the anode in sodium metal batteries, enabling high rate performance and long cycle life. The NaDFOB-based electrolytes possess favourable electrochemical stability and effectively passivate the Na metal anode by forming a compact, robust and conductive solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI) layer. Quantitative nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements of electrolyte solvents indicated that the SEI layer forms mainly in the initial cycles, and it prevents further solvent degradation. Solid-state NMR and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy studies revealed the chemical composition of the NaDFOB-derived SEI film, which includes a mixed phase consisting primarily of sodium diborate, tetrafluoroborate and carbonate. The formation of such a composite SEI rich in borate and tetrafluoroborate provides robust structural and chemical stability, and facilitates fast ion transport for uniform Na stripping/plating.

Sodium metal battery (SMB, NMB) anodes can become dendritic due to an electrochemically unstable native Na-based solid electrolyte interphase (SEI). Herein Li-ion activated tin sulfide graphene nanocomposite membrane (A-SnS–G) is employed as an artificial SEI layer, allowing cyclability of record-thin 100 μm Na metal foils. The thin Na metal is prepared by a self-designed metallurgical rolling protocol. A-SnS–G is initially placed onto the polypropylene (PP) separator but becomes in situ transferred onto the Na metal surface. Symmetric metal cells protected by A-SnS–G achieve low-overpotential extended high-rate cycling in a standard carbonate electrolyte (EC : DEC = 1 : 1, 5% FEC). Accumulated capacity of 1000 mA h cm−2 is obtained after 500 cycles at 4 mA cm−2, with accumulated capacity-to-foil capacity (A/F) ratio of 90.9. This is among the most favorable cycle life, accumulated capacity, and anode utilization combinations reported. Protection by non-activated SnS–G membrane yields significantly worse cycling, albeit still superior to the baseline unprotected sodium. Post-mortem and dedicated light optical analysis indicate that metal swelling, dendrite growth and dead metal formation is extensive for the unprotected sample, but is suppressed with A-SnS–G. Per XPS, post-100 cycles near-surface structure of A-SnS–G is rich in metallic Sn alloys and inorganic carbonate salts. Even after 300 cycles, Li-based SEI components ROCO2-Li, Li2CO3 and LiF are detected with A-SnS–G. As a proof of principle, an SMB with a high mass loading (6 mg cm−2) NVP cathode and a A-SnS–G protected anode delivered extended cyclability, achieving 74 mA h g−1 after 400 cycles at 0.4C.

Sodium metal batteries have attracted extensive attention because of the high availability and energy density of Na; however, the practical application of these batteries is significantly plagued by dendritic growth. Aluminum metal has a unique advantage as a current collector for sodium metal anodes because of its low density and low cost. However, problems with dense aluminum oxide mean its application in sodium metal anodes has seldom been studied. In this study, aluminum foam was fluorinated by a facile method and compounded with sodium metal at high temperatures to prepare a sodiophilic aluminum foam@sodium electrode (NaHFAl). Because of the sodiophilic surface, NaHFAl achieves a non-dendritic deposition morphology and markedly reduced voltage hysteresis in symmetric cells for over 2200 h. The NaHFAl/carbonate electrolyte/sulfurized polyacrylonitrile (SPAN) cell exhibited excellent cycle performance, with a capacity retention of 68% after 800 cycles. Our work provides an easily scalable and cost-effective approach for the development of high-performance sodium metal anodes.

Multilayer graphene (MLG) is in situ formed in a matrix of amorphous carbon prepared from carbonized waste paper at 750 °C. The resulting samples are systematically characterized by morphology, spectroscopy, diffractometry, nitrogen adsorption–desorption and electrochemistry. The carbon structure with six layered graphene can be formed in a matrix of amorphous carbon at such a low temperature. The resulting sample displays a specific surface area of 862 m2 g−1, a meso-pore volume of 0.55 cm3 g−1 and a capacitance of 214 F g−1, which are correspondingly 2.16, 2.29 and 2.14 times higher than those of the sample prepared directly from carbonized waste paper. Although the sample displays the basic characteristics of amorphous carbon, MLG is mostly found to be formed around the regular nickel crystal face in the amorphous carbon matrix. It is also found that the formation of MLG can be affected by the coexistence of nickel crystals and sodium metal. The optimized porous structural characteristics, including the specific surface area, and the micro- and meso-pore volumes, result from the rearrangement of graphite microcrystallites, giving an improved capacitive performance.

The sodium (Na) anode suffers severe interfacial resistance and dendrite issues in a classic NASICON-type Na3Zr2Si2PO12 (NZSP) electrolyte, resulting in poor electrochemical performance for solid-state Na metal batteries. There has been little success in the reduction of interfacial resistance in recent years. The exact mechanism of this resistance has not been fully understood because of little information about the interface. In this work, we effectively address the large interfacial resistance issue and the metal dendrite problem between the Na anode and NZSP by introducing a TiO2 film as an active interphase. We employ quasiinsitu X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) to uncover the interphase formation mechanism at the Na/TiO2–NZSP electrolyte interface. Our quasiinsitu XPS results confirm the formation of a sodiated-TiO2 interphase upon stepwise Na evaporation on the surface of the NZSP electrolyte. Further investigation by molten Na contact angle measurements, impedance spectroscopy and DFT calculations demonstrates that the sodiated-TiO2 interphase promotes Na ion transport between the Na anode and NZSP electrolyte. Moreover, the electrostatic potential formed at the NZSP/NaxTiO2 interface can effectively reduce electronic conductivity at the interface and hence prevent the growth of sodium dendrites. A representative paradigm for interphase design is provided to address the interface contact for developing stable solid-state batteries with high performance.

Sodium metal is considered a potential candidate for the anode in next-generation cost-effective and high-energy-density metal batteries. However, its practical application in ether-based electrolytes is severely hindered by the uncontrolled proliferation of sodium dendrites and the instability of the solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) layer. To address these challenges, we developed a lightweight, multifunctional separator using electrospinning technology. This separator, composed of a polymer-metal-organic framework composite (PAN/ZIF-67), offers a novel alternative to conventional bulky glass fiber separators. The PAN/ZIF-67 separator features a unique ordered structure and open active metal sites, which significantly enhance electrolyte wettability and promote anion adsorption, effectively guiding the uniform deposition of Na + . Experimental results confirmed its superior electrochemical performance, including low polarization voltage and high cycling stability, under standard ether-based electrolyte conditions without additives. In symmetric Na || Na cells equipped with the PAN/ZIF-67 separator, exceptional cycling stability was achieved, with a low polarization voltage of ∼12 mV at 1 mA cm −2 sustained over 1000 h and ∼66 mV at 5 mA cm −2 for over 500 h. In a full cell with a Na₃V₂(PO₄)₃ cathode and Na anode, the separator demonstrated excellent rate capability and cycling stability, maintaining a capacity retention of 72.4 % after 800 cycles at 5C. This work offers a possible solution to address critical issues in sodium metal batteries and represents a notable advancement toward their practical applications.

Commercial Cu foam can be employed as a 3D current collector to accommodate Na metal for stable sodium metal batteries (SMBs). However, few studies focus on regulating the interphase structure and properties of Cu foam to achieve fast and uniform Na impregnation. Herein, a facile and controllable oxidation treatment strategy is used to in-situ construct a fluffy CuO/Cu 2 O surface layer on the skeleton of Cu foam (SF–Cu-3.6). The oxidation degree and interphase structure of Cu foam can be rationally designed by adjusting the concentration of (NH 4 ) 2 S 2 O 8 oxidant, which is directly related to the driving force of Na infusion. With an optimized interface, Na metal can be rapidly infused into SF-Cu-3.6 within 5 s and a structurally complete Na/SF-Cu-3.6 composite electrode with a flat surface and no visible void can be obtained. The SF-Cu-3.6 with a large surface area can be used as a 3D host for Na metal to lower the local current density during cycling, resulting in uniform Na deposition without dendrite formation and growth. In virtue of the structural advantages, the symmetric Na/SF-Cu-3.6 cell exhibits flat charge/discharge plateaus with a low overpotential of 12 mV and stable cycling up to 1000 h at 0.5 mA cm −2 . When paired with NaTi 2 (PO 4 ) 3 , the rate performance of the full cell using the Na/SF-Cu-3.6 composite anode is significantly better than that of the full cell using a bare Na anode.

Sodium metal, with its high theoretical capacity, low redox potential, and cost-effectiveness, presents a promising anode candidate for next-generation high-energy-density batteries. However, the development of Na metal anodes is significantly challenged by issues such as uncontrolled dendrite growth, uncontrolled volume expansion, and associated safety concerns. Designing and developing advanced materials to enhance the conductivity of sodium metal anodes and promote uniform sodium ion deposition are of urgent importance. Herein, a MXene-based hybrid material was developed by integrating MOF-derived Zn, Co, N, and C dopants with Ti3C2Tx MXene to serve as a hosting substrate for the Na metal anode. The MXene provided a conductive framework, while the MOF-derived dopants introduced sodiophilic sites, promoting uniform Na deposition and mitigating volume expansion. The optimized material demonstrated an average Coulombic efficiency of 99.99% over 3000 cycles and stable cycling for over 5000 h in symmetrical cells and maintained over 80% capacity retention at 3 C after 500 cycles in full-cell tests, highlighting its potential as a robust Na metal anode material.

The design of an oxidation-resistant electrolyte is crucial for achieving a high-voltage sodium metal battery (SMB) system. However, traditional ester-based electrolyte systems demonstrate limitations in oxidative stability and interfacial compatibility with both high-voltage cathode materials and sodium metal anodes. Herein, we propose a novel sulfolane (SL)-based electrolyte that incorporates a film-forming co-solvent fluoroethylene carbonate and low-viscosity dimethyl carbonate as diluent co-solvent. This innovative design not only broadens the electrochemical window of the electrolyte, but also promotes the formation of a unique weakly-solvated structure. Therefore, the electrolyte can induce in-situ formation of high-quality cathode electrolyte interphase and solid electrolyte interphase on electrodes during battery cycling, along with faster Na + transport kinetics. Consequently, the designed electrolyte achieves a high Coulombic efficiency of 97.9% in Na||Cu cells and a substantial lifespan of 1000 h in Na||Na symmetric cells. Furthermore, Na||Na 3 V 2 (PO 4 ) 2 O 2 F cells exhibit a capacity retention of 93.6% after 300 cycles at a high cut-off voltage of 4.5 V. This study provides valuable insights into the future design of SL-based weakly solvated electrolytes for high-voltage SMBs.

Sodium (Na) metal anode has been considered as the promising candidate for next generation high-energy-density rechargeable batteries such as Na-S, Na-O 2 and Na-CO 2 , owing to its high specific capacity, low electrode potential and low cost. Unfortunately, some intractable problems hinder the practical application, including volume change and dendrite formation induced by inhomogeneous Na nucleation. Herein, 3D carbon cloth (CC) supporting Bi-MOF derived carbon nanosheets containing Bi nanoparticles and carbon shells (CC@Bi@C) were prepared to serve as Na deposition/dissolution hosts, integrating high surface area and favorable sodiophilicity. Due to the existence of Bi sodiophilic sites, Na nucleation and deposition can be induced, rendering uniform and dendrite-free morphology. Moreover, the 3D carbon framework can effectively reduce the current density and uniform distribution of Na + flux, solving the uncontrolled Na dendrite growth. As a result, the CC@Bi@C||Na half cell operating at 1 mA cm −2 for 1 mA h cm −2 exhibits 99.85% Coulombic efficiency for nearly 500 cycles. The symmetric cell maintains stable cycle for more than 300 h at 2 mA cm −2 for 2 mA h cm −2 with low overpotential. When paired a full cell with Na 3 V 2 (PO 4 ) 3 cathode, CC@Bi@C anode exhibits a stable capacity of 103.4 mA h g −1 at 1C (1 C = 117 mA h g −1 ) over 150 cycles for 95.5% capacity retention with high CE of 99.0%. This work provides a facile strategy to inhibit dendrite growth and uniform Na deposition.

Metallic sodium is considered the most likely anode material to replace metallic lithium owing to its high theoretical capacity, abundant reserves, and low cost. However, the uneven deposition and agglomerate deposition of Na often result in low coulombic efficiency and inferior lifetime during cycling. Here, by phosphorizing treatment, a sodiophilic phosphorized copper mesh (PCM) has been achieved as the metallic sodium-host current collector for the first time; then through in situ electrochemical reaction construct, sodiophilic Na–Cu–P composite layer, which has a fast electronic/ionic conductivity and strong adsorption ability with sodium, thereby greatly mitigating electrodeposition overpotential for improving Na plating/stripping behaviors. Meanwhile, the cross-linked mesh skeleton significantly diminishes the local current density, thus achieving highly reversible Na plating/stripping behavior with dendrite-free and “dead Na”-free. Consequently, the PCM electrode can maintain a high coulombic efficiency (∼99.96%) over 1000 cycles at 5 mA cm−2 and exhibit an ultra-low electrodeposition overpotential from 0.5 mA cm−2 to 10 mA cm−2 in a half-cell. Similarly, the symmetrical cell displays superior cycling stability with low overpotential. Furthermore, the PCM@Na anode delivers excellent cycling/rate performance when paired with Prussian blue (PB) cathode in full-cell.

The energy density of batteries can be increased by using high-load cathode material matched with sodium (Na) metal anode. However, the large polarization of the battery under such harsh conditions will promote the growth of Na dendrites and side reactions. Carbon materials are regarded as ideal modify layers on Na metal anode to regulate the Na + plating/stripping behavior and inhibit the Na dendrites and side reactions due to their light weight, high stability and structural adjustability. However, commonly used carbon nanotubes and carbon nanofibers cannot enable these modified Na metal anodes to operate stably in full batteries with a high-load cathode (> 15 mg·cm −2 ). The most fundamental reason is that abundant polar functional groups on the surface bring serious side reactions and agglomerations lead to uneven Na + flow. Here, a proof-of-concept study lies on fabrications of carbon nanospheres with small amount of polar functional groups and sodiophobic components on the surface of Na metal anode, which significantly enhances the uniformity of the Na + plating/stripping. The assembled symmetric battery can cycle stability for 1300 h at 3 mA·cm −2 /3 mAh·cm −2 . The full battery with high-load Na 3 V 2 (PO 4 ) 3 (30 mg·cm −2 ) maintains a Coulombic efficiency of 99.7% after 100 cycles.
