Accurately constructing membranes based on two-dimensional (2D) materials on commercial porous substrates remains a significant challenge for H 2 purification. In this work, a series of tubular 2D MXene membranes are prepared on commercial porous stainless steel substrates via fast electrophoretic deposition. Compared with other methods, such as filtration or drop coating, and so on. such preparation route shows the advantages of simple operation, high efficiency for membrane assembly (within 5 min) with attractive reproducibility, and ease for scale-up. The tubular MXene membranes present excellent gas separation performance with hydrogen permeance of 1290 GPU and H 2 /CO 2 selectivity of 55. Furthermore, the membrane displays extremely stable performance during the long-term test for more than 1250 h, and about 93% of the membranes from one batch have exceeded the DOE target for CO 2 capture. Most importantly, this work provides valuable referential significance for other 2D materials-based membranes for future application development.

Nanoporous Co 3 O 4 (po-Co 3 O 4 ) films have been prepared on stainless steel substrate by a novel two-step method. Firstly, a composite Co 3 O 4 -SiO 2 film was fabricated via electrochemical co-deposition under a cathodic potential from the mixed sol-gel precursor. Then, the obtained composite film was underwent consecutive cycling voltammetries in a concentrated KOH solution to etch the SiO 2 component, leading to the formation of po-Co 3 O 4 films. The resultant film electrode exhibits satisfactory electrocatalytic property towards the oxygen evolution reaction (OER).

The formation of the interfacial adhesion between an epoxy adhesive and a substrate was normally accompanied by the epoxy curing process on the substrate. Although the debate on the formation mechanism of the interfacial adhesion is still ongoing, this issue can causally be resolved by studying the interfacial structural formation between the epoxy adhesive and the substrate. Herein, to reveal the interfacial structural formation of a representative formula composed of epoxy (digylcidyl ether of biphenyl A, DGEBA) and amine hardener (2,2′-(ethylenedioxy) diethylamine, EDDA) with the steel substrate upon curing and postcuring treatments, sum-frequency generation (SFG) vibrational spectroscopy with a sandwiched transparent window/epoxy adhesive/steel setup was applied to detect and track the buried molecular-level structures at the epoxy adhesive/steel interface. An X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic (XPS) experiment was performed to probe the intentionally exposed interface to disclose the occurring interfacial chemical reaction. The reaction between the epoxy groups and the steel-surface OH groups and the molecular reconstruction of interfacial epoxy methyl groups upon curing and postcuring steps were confirmed. The latter also indirectly indicated the formation of the additional hydrogen bonding and the former bonding reaction at the interface. The above two spectroscopic experimental results matched up with the further examination of the adhesion strength. Therefore, this work elucidates the formation of the interfacial bonding between the epoxy formula and the steel substrate upon curing and postcuring treatments at the molecular level, thus providing an in-depth insight into the origin of the interfacial adhesion.

The anodic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) process is essential in new technologies such as water electrolysis and metal-air batteries. However, it often exhibits suboptimal efficiency and delayed kinetics. This study presents a novel and new design for the fabrication of homogeneous FeNiBTC/SSM (SSM = stainless steel material) with tunable crystalline properties by a self-sacrificial and in situ synthesis from a recycled stainless steel substrate. The modified stainless steel template enhances the material’s properties compared to the original mesh substrate and its structure can be attributed to the typical MIL-100 (Material of Institute Lavoisier) structure, which is a hierarchically structured, highly chemically stable material formed by FeO6 octahedral clusters around a single shared oxygen anion. The as-synthesized FeNiBTC/SSM4 catalyst exhibited excellent electrocatalytic performance for OER, as indicated by its small Tafel slope (74.5 mV dec −1 ), low overpotential (η 10 223.7 mV), and high current retention (95.4 %) after a stability test lasting 45 h. The study demonstrates the development of water-based and self-sustaining MOF electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction in a simple process, along with a novel method for reusing renewable resources.

A rotating packed bed (RPB) is one of the typical process intensification equipment and its performance can be influenced by the surface wettability of packings. However, tuning the surface wettability of the packing by the surface-modification method is still a challenge due to the extreme physical and chemical environment in RPBs. This work presents a facile strategy for controlling the surface wettability on the stainless steel substrate with a series of highly stable coatings. The water contact angles on the surfaces can be tuned from 75° to 160°. Based on the systematical analysis from the micro-characteristics (surface microstructure and surface free energy) to the macro-wettabilities (water contact angle) of the prepared coatings, the structure-function relationship of these coatings was revealed with wetting models. Application performance testing indicates that the coatings displayed strong adhesion, long-time corrosion resistance, and liquid impinging resistance under high-gravity conditions. This work opens a new avenue to produce highly stable coatings on stainless steel substrates with controllable wettability, which is very helpful to the wettability control for the stainless steel wire mesh packing of RPBs for industrial applications.

Graphene nanosheets are impermeable to chemical molecules and electrical conductivity. Thus, they are attractive candidates to enhance an epoxy zinc rich coating with a significant anticorrosion performance. Several studies focus on investigating the role of graphene in reinforcing the corrosion resistance of the coatings. However, there is a paucity of study that analyzing the anticorrosion relationship between the feature of graphene and epoxy zinc rich coating. The present study reported on epoxy zinc rich coatings with enhanced anticorrosion performance via embedding reduced graphene oxide/graphene oxide (rGO/GO) nanosheets. Thus, rGO and GO were prepared from natural graphite powder via the modified Hummers method. The results of Raman, XPS, FT-IR, SPM, and TEM analyses revealed the quintessential structure and morphology of rGO and GO. In addition, results from electrochemical measurements and the scanning vibrating electrode technique indicated that rGO effectively enhanced the cathodic protection duration of epoxy zinc rich coatings. rGO nanosheets exhibited dual functions that were identified in two aspects. First, the impermeable barrier role was exerted by including prepared rGO nanosheets into the polymer matrix. Second, superior electrical conductivity was utilized since the rGO nanosheets improved the efficiency of the electrical connection between the zinc particles and steel substrate.

Superhydrophobic surfaces have shown great potential in domestic and industrial applications. However, these surfaces lose their superhydrophobic functions once being contaminated by oily liquids. In this work a simple chemical bath deposition method is reported to fabricate superoleophobic surfaces on steel substrates that repel both water and oil. The synthesis of superoleophobic surfaces involves the fabrication of the micro/nanometre-scale origami-ball-like structures on steel substrates, followed by the modification of low surface energy material. The fabricated surfaces have glycerol, peanut oil and hexadecane contact angles larger than 150° and roll-off angles smaller than 10°. This method is highly efficient because it takes only 5 min to create the surface re-entrant structures that are required by superoleophobicity. The prepared surfaces showed remarkable durability and retained superoleophobicity even after exposure to high and low temperatures (−30 and 100°C), and UV irradiation. This work will enrich the processing methods of the superoleophobic surfaces on stainless steel substrates.

This study investigates the feasibility of a two-step process for the deposition of wear resistant, nickel-diamond nanocomposite coatings onto steel substrates. The steps involve the spray deposition onto stainless steel substrates, of nickel nanoparticles (40–60 nm diameter) and nanodiamonds (approx. 100 nm diameter). This is followed by the sintering of the nanoparticle coating using a microwave plasma . The 0.2–2 μm thick nanocomposite coatings exhibited very good adhesion on the steel substrates, based on Rockwell C indentation tests . The morphology and roughness of the coatings was found to be significantly influenced by the sintering temperature , which was investigated in the range 711 to 885 °C. The effect of nanodiamond concentration and spray duration were also investigated. Of the parameters studied, the concentration of nanodiamond in the composite was the dominant factor controlling the wear performance of the coatings, when assessed based on pin-on-disc wear tests . Compared to the nickel coating and the steel substrate, the nickel-diamond nanocomposite coatings exhibited a 126 and 55-fold enhancement respectively, in wear performance.

Superhydrophobic surfaces (SHS) and slippery lubricant-infused porous surfaces (SLIPS) attract great attention due to their multiple properties in both industries and our daily lives. Here, we first fabricated the SHS with micro-scale flower-like structures composed of nano-sheets on pipeline steel substrate. Then, we obtained the SLIPS by spin-coating lubricant into gaps of micro-scale flower-like structures, with the air still trapped among gaps of nano-sheets. The SLIPS shows excellent liquid repellency as the SHS. The SLIPS also shows stability after the scour of flowing water. These results of polarization curves (Tafel) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopies deduced the SLIPS with better and more stable anti-corrosion property than the SHS. Compared with the SHS, the lack of attachment and CaCO 3 on the SLIPS indicates that the SLIPS demonstrates better anti-fouling and anti-scaling properties than the SHS. Moreover, the SLIPS shows promising wear resistance under the abrasion simulated by sandpaper compared with the SHS. Notably, the air trapped among nano-sheets is conducive to the lubricant flowing to the surface quickly, exhibiting spontaneous self-healing in atmosphere, even if part flower-like structures of the SLIPS subject to damage with the lubricant consumed after scratched.

Electrolysis of neutral saline wastewater/seawater enables sustainable hydrogen production but faces sluggish hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) kinetics and poor durability in chloride-rich media. Herein, a novel Cu 2 S/Amorphous/Cu–Ni–Mo heterostructure electrocatalyst, prepared by electrodeposition and atomic layer deposition (ALD), was introduced to address these challenges. The electrode was synthesized by electrodepositing a Cu–Ni–Mo coating onto a stainless steel substrate, followed by in-situ sulfurization using ALD technology to form an amorphous layer, yielding a heterostructure with optimized interfacial properties. This heterostructure electrode exhibited an overpotential of 63.29 mV at −10 mA cm −2 and maintained stable operation at −100 mA cm −2 for over 180 h in 0.5 mol/L NaCl +1 mol/L phosphate buffered saline (PBS). A 10 cm × 10 cm electrode was successfully fabricated using this scalable method, which exhibited uniform morphology and stability exceeding 240 h. This work advances HER performance and scalability in neutral environments, facilitating industrial-scale electrocatalytic hydrogen production.
