ZIF-8 Modified Ce–Sol–gel Film on Rebar for Enhancing Corrosion Resistance

Zeng Yanwei,Xu Peng,Liu Guoqiang,Wang Tianguan,Lei Bing,Feng Zhiyuan,Zhang Ping,Meng Guozhe

Chloride-induced corrosion of steel reinforcement is the key factor leading to the degradation of reinforced concrete building durability. Improving the corrosion resistance of oxide scale of rebar has always been a research hotspot in the field of civil engineering materials. A ZIF-8 modified Ce–Sol–gel (ZCS) film was prepared on oxide scale of plain steel rebars by sol–gel method. It is observed that the | Z | 0.01 Hz value of the ZCS film reached 320 kΩ cm 2 , which is about 29 times higher than that of blank rebar in simulated concrete pore (SCP) solution with 0.1 M NaCl. Then, they were inserted into mortar block and curing them in a curing box at T  = 20 ± 2 °C and RH = 95 ± 2% for 28 days. Subsequently, these samples were subject to electrochemical impedance spectroscopy in 3.5 wt% NaCl. The | Z | 0.01 Hz value of the rebar with the ZCS film was six times higher than that of the blank rebar after immersing for 20 days, resulting in an overall increase in corrosion resistance for rebar. The results indicated that the modification by ZIF-8 could reduce the porosity of Ce–sol–gel (CS) film and improved the “labyrinth effect” of the film. Additionally, the negative charge on the surface of ZIF-8 in alkaline condition increased the repulsion effect with Cl − , significantly reducing the sensitivity of rebar to Cl − .

Long-term corrosion protection of reinforcing bars via a self-responsive coating incorporating ZrP functional fillers

Bing Yin,Tongran Li,Xiaoyue Jia,Fangyu Fan,Gang Qiao,Dongshuai Hou

The conventional coating of reinforcing bars exhibits inadequate anti-corrosion efficacy stemming from a non-specific, blind protection mechanism, poses a threat to the durability of concrete. We devised a novel self-responsive functional filler, L-arginine (LA) intercalated zirconium phosphate (LCZrP), synthesized via an intercalation reaction. This innovative filler was seamlessly integrated into an epoxy (EP) resin matrix, yielding a smart anticorrosive coating that harmoniously combines active and passive corrosion protection strategies. The integration of LCZrP within the coating matrix serves a trifecta of purposes: it extends the corrosion propagation path, effectively disperses nanofiller agglomeration, and enhances interfacial adhesion with the epoxy coating. Critically, the controlled release of corrosion inhibitors from the interlayer further fortifies the coating's resistance to corrosion, imparting a multi-layered protective shield. After enduring a 60-day immersion in a simulated concrete pore solution, the LCZrP/EP coating demonstrated exceptional durability, maintaining a low-frequency impedance modulus value consistently within the range of 4.27×10 10 to 5.12×10 10 Ω·cm 2 , marking a remarkable 34-fold enhancement over the performance of the epoxy coating alone. This breakthrough underscores the LCZrP/EP coating's potential as a groundbreaking solution for reinforcing bar protection in concrete, harnessing the complementary strengths of epoxy resin's physical barrier, the impermeability of two-dimensional lamellar structures, and the proactive release of corrosion inhibitors to forge a robust, multi-faceted passivation layer.

Chloride ion-triggered silver alginate (Alg-Ag) microcapsules for reinforcement anti-corrosion: Preparation and inhibition mechanism

Wencheng Wang,Nanxi Xie,Zhenkun Lin,Yong Zhang,Yan Chen,Zhongmin Liu

The application of corrosion inhibitors provides an efficient approach for mitigating steel rebar corrosion. However, the premature failure of corrosion inhibitors in concrete remains a pending issue. The adoption of microencapsulated inhibitors shows significant promise in addressing this concern. This study proposes a novel chloride ion-triggered microcapsule designed for the anti-corrosion protection of reinforcement. The microcapsules were synthesized using calcium carbonate (CaCO 3 ) particles as a template and sodium monofluorophosphate (MFP) as the encapsulated inhibitory core. The exterior of the CaCO 3 particles was coated with a silver alginate (Alg-Ag) layer, which confers the chloride ion-triggered release mechanism. The activation of microcapsules occurs through a chemical reaction between silver ions in the Alg-Ag layer and chloride ions from the environment, resulting in the formation of silver chloride and the subsequent disintegration of the microcapsule. The MFP inhibitor is released as a consequence. The fabricated microcapsules were characterized in terms of morphology and chemical composition. The inhibitory performance of the microcapsules was analyzed by electrochemical methods. The use of the CaCO 3 template was found to be effective in producing a porous matrix suitable for the loading of MFP. The microcapsules exhibit a well-defined spherical morphology with a distinct core-shell structure. Both FTIR and TG analysis confirmed the successful entrapment of MFP within the core of microcapsules. Electrochemical corrosion tests demonstrated that the microcapsules effectively retarded the corrosion process of the reinforcement, with the corrosion inhibition efficiency increasing from 59.1 % at 24 h to 63.8 % at 72 h, indicative of a controlled and progressive release of the inhibitor from the microcapsules.

Inhibitor loaded functional HNTs modified coatings towards corrosion protection in reinforced concrete environment

Yanli Zhang,Yujie Qiang,Huangwei Ren,Jun Cao,Linjing Cui,Zhifang Zong,Depeng Chen,Tengfei Xiang

In this work, the corrosion inhibitor sodium D-gluconate (SD) was successfully loaded into halloysite nanotubes (HNTs). After that, SD-HNTs-A3@CS/SA smart nanocontainers, achieving controlled release properties of inhibitors, were prepared by the layer-by-layer (LbL) self-assembly method. The BET analysis found that the pore size inside the halloysite nanotubes increased after etching by 3 mol/L H 2 SO 4 . According to the TG results, the loading capacity of corrosion inhibitors increased to three times of the original HNTs. The pH-responsive properties of nanocontainers could be demonstrated by UV–Vis spectroscopy under acidic/basic conditions. Furthermore, SD-HNTs-A3@CS/SA nanoparticles were embedded in epoxy resin to fabricate a smart composite coating . When the SD-HNTs-A3@CS/SA content was 2 %, the composite coating exhibited superior anti-corrosion performance towards steel corrosion in concrete simulation solution (containing 3.5 wt% NaCl), with its impedance at 0.01 Hz maintaining 6.4 × 10 6  Ω·cm 2 even after 18d of corrosion immersion. In addition, the anti-corrosion mechanism of SD for steel matrix was investigated by molecular modeling methods. These findings provide new insights into the preparation of smart coatings, expecting a wide range of applications in the corrosion protection of steel and other metals in reinforced concrete environments.

Large Enhancement on Performance of Flexible Cellulose-Based Piezoelectric Composite Film by Welding CNF and MXene via Growing ZnO to Construct a “Brick-Rebar-Mortar” Structure

Qingtao Zhu,Xianfen Chen,Duoduo Li,Lei Xiao,Junyan Chen,Lijun Zhou,Jiabin Chen,Quanping Yuan

Cellulose-based piezoelectric composites have attracted extensive attention in recent years due to their low cost, easy molding, high flexibility, and biocompatibility in the manufacture of piezoelectric nanogenerators (PENG) and sensors. In this work, cellulose nanofibril (CNF)/MXene@ZnO (CM@ZnO) piezoelectric composite films with “brick-rebar-mortar” structure are prepared by growing ZnO on the mixed substrate via a high-efficiency two-step hydrothermal method. As a hard bridge, ZnO welds CNF and MXene together to construct the “brick-rebar-mortar” structure, which greatly improves the piezoelectric performance. Its tensile strength reaches 65.13 ± 3.61 MPa, as well as that the longitudinal piezoelectric constant ( d 33 ) attains 14.3 ± 1.3 pC N −1 . Under the force of 300 KPa, the open-circuit voltage ( V OC ) and short-circuit current ( I SC ) of CM@ZnO PENG are as high as 17.15 V and 997 nA, respectively. Under the force of 100 KPa, it can charge a 1.0 µF commercial capacitor to 6.07 V in 400 s. The assembled flexible piezoelectric sensor can accurately collect the pressure or vibration signal caused by bending the wrist (0.59 V) with excellent sensitivity. The performance demonstrates the feasibility of its application in wearable smart devices and provides a reference for new cellulose-based PENGs.

Zinc–rich inorganic silicate anticorrosive coating incorporating muscovite for steel bars in sand–based autoclaved aerated concrete

Chang Chen,Litong Fang,Ruyi Zhang,Shaowu Jiu,Qiang Song,Yanxin Chen

Corrosion is a thorny problem when steel reinforcement in sand–based autoclaved aerated concrete (SAAC) is in use. In this study, potassium silicate was used as the base material and muscovite and zinc powder were added as fillers to improve the coating properties. In addition to physical and mechanical properties, electrochemical tests including potentiodynamic polarization (PDP) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) were performed on the coatings. The phase composition, chemical composition and morphological differences of different coatings were also characterized. The results showed that zinc powder increased the density of the muscovite–potassium silicate coating and significantly improved the corrosion resistance and mechanical properties of the coatings. The prepared coatings exhibited stable qualities with no heat absorption and release before 365 °C. The adhesive strength and impact resistance of the coatings were as high as 2.43 MPa and 50 kg cm, respectively. The electrochemical test results showed that the coating resistance ( R c ), charge-transfer resistance ( R ct ), and polarization resistance ( R p ) of the C-5.5–55–40 coating were 23578, 3.542 × 10 5 , and 2.911 × 10 5  Ω cm 2 , respectively, which exhibited the optimal corrosion resistance.

Self-healing anticorrosion one-step electrodeposited layered double hydroxide coating on steel rebar in concrete pore solution

Houze Zhou,Wencong Deng,Qi Wang,Rui Liang,Danqian Wang

A phosphate-intercalated layered double hydroxide (PO 4 -LDH) coating was fabricated on carbon steel via a facile one-step electrodeposition method for enhanced corrosion protection. The resulting nanoscale coating, incorporating PO₄³⁻ ions and Cu/Al oxides, exhibits improved integrity and compactness. Electrochemical tests in saturated Ca(OH)₂ solution (simulating concrete pore environment) demonstrated that the PO 4 -LDH coating significantly improves corrosion resistance, offering protection two orders of magnitude greater than bare steel. The coating effectively prevents corrosion upon chloride attack and exhibits self-healing capability for artificial scratches in chloride-containing solution. During immersion, the LDH structure reconstructs via dissolution of Al and incorporation of Ca, leading to increased crystallinity. The release of inhibitor ions (PO₄³⁻ and NO₃⁻) during this reconstruction is considered the key mechanism for the observed anticorrosion and self-healing performance.

Xinghua Shi,Anxue Zhang,Guoqing Han,Yuemeng Yin,Wenchao Chen

Highway bridges are primarily reinforced concrete structures. They have multilayer steel mesh sheets, corrugated pipes, and steel strands inside. As a result, detecting defects in bridge concrete structures requires high technical expertise and can be challenging. This article presents a new device of ground-penetrating radar (GPR) designed specifically for highway bridge inspection. It employs antenna array technology, multichannel radar control technology, and real-time 3-D data acquisition and display technology to achieve reliable detection of various concrete structures commonly found in bridges. Using a 1.3 GHz central frequency antenna array and a multichannel control unit, the system enables simultaneous surveying along five lines, the detection depth can exceed 600 mm in concrete. This significantly enhances detection efficiency. By employing specialized software processing, the detection results are presented in a specific and visually comprehensive 3-D format. Moreover, the system provides 3-D slice images from any position and direction, facilitating the interpretation of detection results for various targets, including reinforcement layout, protective layer thickness, corrugated pipes, steel strands, and other quality defects. It provides advanced and reliable technical means for construction quality control and bridge health monitoring of highway bridges. The results indicate that the device performs well not only in controlled experimental environments, but also in real-world bridge structure environments.

Biomimetic-induced hydroxyapatite for rebar corrosion mitigation in self-healing concrete beam

Yanjie Tang,Yue Li,Xiang Liu,Wanyu Chen,Katrin Schollbach,Wei Chen

The corrosion of embedded rebar in self-healing concrete is seldom reported on and deserves more intensive attention. This study focuses on utilizing biomimetic-induced hydroxyapatite as a means of achieving autonomous self-healing to target issues associated with rebar corrosion in concrete structures. A comprehensive evaluation of the synthesized supramolecular hydrogel as self-healing agent carrier, the simulated self-healing products, and the reinforcement corrosion behaviour in the upscaled self-healing concrete beams was conducted. Results show that the synthesized 2,6-bis [N-(carboxyethyl carbonyl)amino] pyridine (DAP) hydrogel qualifies as a healing agent carrier with high loading capacity and intelligent response after cracking. The feasibility of hydroxyapatite formation via a combination of phosphate ions released by the supramolecular hydrogel and the available calcium ions leached by the cement matrix has been substantiated. The addition of phosphate as the healing agent is effective in mitigating the corrosion of rebar in the designed self-healing concrete beam. It can be explained by the synergistic effect of surface adsorption of chloride ions by the formed hydroxyapatite and the corrosion inhibitor role of the released phosphate.

PVDF mixed matrix ultrafiltration membrane incorporated with deformed rebar-like Fe3O4–palygorskite nanocomposites to enhance strength and antifouling properties

Jiayun Zhu,Shouyong Zhou,Meisheng Li,Ailian Xue,Yijiang Zhao,Wenbo Peng,Weihong Xing

A novel PVDF mixed matrix ultrafiltration membrane was prepared by blending PVDF with the deformed rebar-like Fe 3 O 4 –palygorskite nanocomposites (MPGS) using the chemical coprecipitation method. Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles were anchored on the surface of the palygorskite nanofibers to form deformed rebar-like structures. MPGS were then distributed uniformly on the membrane matrix. PVDF chains firmly wrapped by the deformed rebar-like nanocomposites consequently enhanced the tensile strength of the PVDF membrane. At 7.0 wt % MPGS, the tensile strength increased from 1.59 MPa to 2.66 MPa. The overall thickness, skin layer thickness, finger-like voids, average pore size and surface roughness of membranes decreased with increasing amounts of MPGS. The rejection of the membrane increased to 99.09% at 7.0 wt % MPGS. The contact angle of membranes decreased from 99.14° (pure PVDF) to 78.76° (PVDF/7.0 wt % MPGS). On the other hand, the pure water flux of membranes increased from 123.57 L m −2  h −1 (pure PVDF) to 356.16 L m −2  h −1 (PVDF/7.0 wt % MPGS). The flux recovery rate of the mixed matrix membranes (PVDF/7.0 wt % MPGS) was as high as 80%. This was more than twice that of the pure PVDF membrane (31.6%). These results demonstrated that the deformed rebar-like structure of the MPGS played a critical role in determining the structures and properties of PVDF mixed matrix ultrafiltration membranes. The hydrophilicity, thermal stability, permeation flux and antifouling property of the mixed matrix membranes increased with addition of MPGS. As such, PVDF/MPGS membranes had excellent comprehensive properties thus making them ideal for application in numerous fields.

Preparation and corrosion inhibition performance of controlled-release ethyl cellulose@D-sodium gluconate microcapsules in simulated concrete pore solution

Wen Yang,Yunbo Tong,Yong Yang,Qianping Ran,Lei Dong

The application of corrosion inhibitors is a widely adopted strategy for protecting reinforcing steel against electrochemical degradation. However, conventional direct-addition approaches often lead to premature inhibitor depletion and lack controlled-release functionality. In this study, a novel sustained-release capsule-type inhibitor was developed to combat chloride-induced steel corrosion. Ethyl cellulose with high alkali resistance, controllable release and good mechanical properties was used as the shell material and D -sodium gluconate as the core, using a phase separation method and the preparation of the capsule was verified by TG, FT-IR and SEM. The experiment showed that the resulting capsules displayed a "pea-pod" shape (about 0.5–1.0 μm in length and 0.2 μm in diameter) with a compact core/shell structure and when the core/shell ratio was 1:5, the maximum encapsulation efficiency of the capsules was 73.3 %. When dispersed in simulated concrete pore solution, the capsules enabled sustained release of D -sodium gluconate over multiple days. EIS and LPR were used for electrochemical test. And the electrochemical analysis confirmed that the capsule-based inhibitor effectively suppressed corrosion and improved corrosion resistance. Specifically, a dosage of 0.05 % resulted in an inhibition efficiency of 90.7 ± 1.2 % after 7 days. The core-to-shell ratio was identified as a critical factor governing both the release kinetics and the overall protective performance, with the 1:5 formulation demonstrating optimal corrosion inhibition. This study offers a promising strategy for the design and application of intelligent corrosion inhibitors in reinforced concrete structures.

Vinyl acetate polymers modified by siloxane for improving reinforced concrete: Water proofness and anticorrosion

Qian Zhang,Xin Miao,Jingwei Zhu,Junchen Wu,Miaolan Zhang,Qunchao Zhang,Dean Shi,Tao Jiang,Robert K.Y. Li

Concrete, which is commonly destroyed by erosion in adverse environments, cannot satisfy the demands of foundation construction engineering applications. The optimal way   to ensure concrete's durability is to cover its surface with a barrier coating that prevents potentially harmful particles from penetrating the inside. Vinyl acetate polymers were applied as coatings owing to excellent flexibility and strong adhesion to the substrate. However, their hydrophilicity and low hardness will inevitably limit the usage in various areas, in particular the construction materials field. In this study, a method of modifying vinyl acetate polymers (PVAc) by vinyl triethoxysilane (VTES) and vinyl neononanoate (VeoVa-9), vinyl neodecanoate (VeoVa-10) in tertiary vinyl carbonates was reported to enhance the anticorrosion of concrete, where the former VTES could act a coupling agent, while the latter tertiary vinyl carbonates provide shielding against invasion through steric effect. Following modification, the hydrophilic PVAc becomes a hydrophobic coating with a contact angle as high as 98°; the coating's water absorption rate in one week is merely 1.25%; higher hardness and modulus were validated by nanoindentation measurements, while sandpaper friction and lap-shear trial indicated an enhancement in wear resistance and adhesion; three-electrode electrochemical analysis revealed that the modified coating has a 98% anti-corrosion efficacy, and its excellent anticorrosion performance is further confirmed by 480-hour salt spray test on reinforced concrete models.
