Hydrophobic modification of pentaerythritol and its application in fire-retardant coatings for steel structures

Bo Tang,Weihua Feng,Jia Guo,Jun Sun,Sheng Zhang,Xiaoyu Gu,Hongfei Li,Wantai Yang

Pentaerythritol (PER) is generally used as carbon source in intumescent fire- retardant coating. In order to enhance water resistance of the coating, PER reacted with C9 maleic anhydride copolymer microsphere (C9-MAH) by esterification. The composition of the product PER-C9-MAH was analyzed by FTIR; TGA results show the thermostability of PER-C9-MAH is better than PER; and SEM observation clearly showed the obvious enlargement in particle size from PER to PER-C9-MAH. The contact angle of PER is 26.5° and it raised to 87.2° for PER-C9-MAH. The fire resistance changes of the coating before and after water/salt water soaking are compared. After soaking in distilled water and 5 g/L salt water for 48 h respectively, phenomena such as blistering and falling off will be found in the coating containing PER accompanied with 1.9 ± 0.01% (in water) and 2.4 ± 0.01% (in salt water) weight losses; however the coating containing PER-C9-MAH looked smooth with little defects, and the weight losses are just 0.3 ± 0.01% (in water) and 0.3 ± 0.01% (in salt water) respectively. After burning 30 min, the back temperature of coating containing PER raises 76.2 °C (soaked in water) and 157.0 °C (soaked in salt water) respectively; However, it is just 19.7 °C and 33.7 °C rise for coating containing PER-C9-MAH. TGA, SEM and Raman spectroscopy results document the char of the coating containing PER-C9-MAH shows higher quantity, density and degree of graphitization, so it exhibits enhanced strength.

Development of Waterborne Heavy-Duty Anticorrosive Coatings with Modified Nanoscale Titania

Xingjun Wang,Weipeng Sun,Wenge Li,Chenglin Zuo,Yong Jiang,Shuangxi Wang

The steel structures of coastal engineering in the moist tropics and subtropics are always under a C5/CX level corrosion environment with high temperature, high humidity, and high salt fog. Anticorrosive waterborne coatings with high weatherability and reliability are urgently to be developed. In this work, one kind of waterborne heavy-duty anticorrosive coatings, with the advantages of excellent corrosion resistance, self-repairing ability, self-cleaning ability, and high film compactness, was successfully achieved through modifying the side chains on the surface morphologies of the spherical nanoscale titania. The micromorphology and structure of the coating were characterized by a scanning electron microscope (SEM), transmission electron microscope (TEM), and atomic force microscope (AFM). The anticorrosion characteristics and forming mechanism of the modified nanoscale titania coating were analyzed. The salt spray tests showed that the neutral salt spray resistance time of the modified nanoscale titania coating was 1440 h. Its durability reached the H level and met the design requirements for 15 years of anticorrosion lifetime. The modified nanoscale titania coatings had been large-scale commercially applied at some typical steel structures under an extreme harsh corrosion environment in one coastal thermal power plant. The results showed that no rusting, peeling, or crack phenomena were observed after 3 years of service under different harsh coastal corrosion conditions.Keywords:heavy-duty anticorrosive coating;waterborne coating;modified nanoscale titania;coastal engineering;steel structure

Water-based intumescent fire resistance coating containing organic-modified glass fiber for steel structure

Zhenzhu Zhou,Zhihao Zhang,Junchao Huang,Yuhua Wang

Fire resistance of steel structures is crucial to building safety to maintain structural integrity and avoid secondary damage (building collapse), when facing fire hazards . High temperature in fire rapidly softens the steel structure which fails to afford the load bearing. Water-based intumescent coating is now one of the most prospective treatments as it is excellent fire resistant, environmentally friendly, and economically effective. However, the poor density and thermal stability of its char residue make it difficult to be competent in a real fire. In this work, an organic-modified glass fiber grafted with 10-(2, 5-dihydroxyphenyl)-10-hydro-9-oxa-10-phosphaphenanthrene-10-oxide and γ -(2, 3-epoxypropoxy) propyltrimethoxysilane (ODOPB@KH560@GF) was prepared as the filler for the intumescent fire resistance coating containing ammonium polyphosphate/melamine/pentaerythritol (APP/MEL/PER) and water-based acrylic latex. The ODOPB@KH560@GF was found to enhance the thermal stability of the char layer and decrease the peak heat release rate and total heat release by 60.5 % and 58.8 % in a dosage of 5  wt  % (AL-4). Also, the fire resistance limit of the steel plate coated with AL-4 was twice as high as that of the unprotected steel plate and higher than that of the steel plate coated with a certain commercial coating, leading to further applications in the fire safety coating for steel structures.

RustNet: an automated approach for rust detection and quantification in steel structures using feature encoding and multilayer attention networks

Abbas Touqeer,Mubeen Muhammad,Razzaq Abdul,Javed Umair,Raza Muneeb,Tabish Mohammad,Alotaibi Khalid M.,Yasin Ghulam,Li Hui

The cost of anticorrosion maintenance is considered the most substantial expense associated with steel construction. Preventive maintenance of steel structures primarily depends on visual inspections, but the results are often inconsistent due to the inspector’s experience. To overcome this problem, this study proposed a three-pronged approach comprising distinct methodologies for automated image analysis. The proposed RustNet architecture uses a feature encoder, feature decoder, and Rust module for image analysis. The encoder applies convolution and down-sampling to generate feature maps, while the decoder, with three stacked blocks, reconstructs the image. The Rust module employs a multilayer attention network (MAN) to extract rust-specific features. Furthermore, gradient edge detection and linked segment analysis are employed to precisely quantify individual rust areas. The proposed model is validated on a large dataset of images captured under different light conditions; the validation results demonstrates promising performance in rust growth detection and quantification.

Natural tannic acid-based intumescent coating towards efficient fire resistance and thermal performance for steel structure

Fei Xiao,Wei He,Wenlong Shao,Xinke Huo,Leyuan Rao,Weixian Wang,Xuelian Lu,Honghong Wang,Kaiyuan Li,Bihe Yuan

Developing fire protection coatings that reconcile outstanding fire safety with environmental sustainability remains a critical challenge in materials engineering. In this study, a new biomass-based intumescent coating was constructed from biomass-derived tannic acid, ammonium polyphosphate, melamine, zinc carbonate, and basalt scales. The resulting coating demonstrated excellent fire resistance performance, maintaining backside temperature of steel below 150 °C during 1200 s butane torch exposure, while the control steel with neat epoxy coating reaching structural failure threshold of 450 °C within 160 s. Cone calorimeter test indicated the rapid char formation behavior of the coating, achieving 88 % reduction in peak heat release rate, 49 % decrease in total heat release, and 83 % suppression in fire growth rate index compared to control coating. SEM-EDS, FTIR, XRD, Raman, and XPS techniques were employed to elucidate the fire protection mechanism of the coating, and it was proven that zinc carbonate and basalt scales participated in the carbonization process of the coating. The hierarchical structure combining chemical cross-linking and physical reinforcement resulted in the improvement in the integrity, cohesion, and morphology of char layer, thereby inhibiting heat and mass transfer during burning. Furthermore, the increase in surface roughness resulting from the introduction of basalt scales enhanced the hydrophobicity of the coating and allowed it to maintain strong adhesion and mechanical stability. In summary, this study not only demonstrates high fire resistance in biomass-based intumescent coatings but also offers insights for the sustainable design and functional optimization of fire protection coatings for steel structures.

A versatile eco-friendly intumescent coating imparts excellent fire protective performance for steel structures and batteries

Fei Xiao,Xinke Huo,Wenlong Shao,Bihe Yuan,Kaiyuan Li,Liping Zhu

Fire protection is a critical feature in applications ranging from steel structures to battery energy storage systems. In this study, a biomass-based intumescent fire protection coating was constructed based on multi-component synergy to prevent the failure of steel structures and lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) under fire, and their thermal stability, flame retardancy, fire resistance, smoke suppression, wear resistance, and hydrophobicity of the coating were systematically evaluated. The results demonstrated that, due to the protective coating, the temperature on the backside of the steel coated with a 1.5 mm thick layer remains below 150 °C throughout the 20-minute butane torch fire test (exceeding 1100 °C), which is significantly lower than the steel structure's failure threshold. Moreover, cone calorimeter test indicated that the peak heat release rate and total heat release of the coating were significantly reduced by 89.9 % and 87.4 %, respectively, compared to the control coating. Mechanistic analysis revealed that various components in the coating reacted rapidly during combustion, enhancing the structure and composition of the intumescent char, which acted as an effective thermal barrier, inhibiting the transfer of heat and mass. In the thermal runaway experiment of LIBs, the coating inhibited heat transfer between cells, keeping the temperature on the back of the protected battery below 88.2 °C. Additionally, the surface heating rate was as low as 0.072 °C/s, which prevented or delayed the propagation of thermal runaway. In summary, this study explored the development of green, efficient, and multifunctional intumescent coatings, which may promote advancements in thermal safety protection for energy systems.

A promising strategy for enhancing fire resistance of steel structure: a composite thermoplastic polyurethane sheet adhered to steel plate

Congcong Zhai,Jiale Li,Jiajing Xing,Xiaohang An,Wenchao Zhang,Rongjie Yang

It is an effective passive fire protection method for the steel structure by painting fireproof coatings. Here, a feasible strategy for enhancing the fire resistance of steel structures is proposed. Specifically, a kind of adhesive composite sheet based on thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU), ammonium polyphosphate (APP), polyhedral oligomeric octaphenylsilsesquioxane (OPS), titanium dioxide (TiO 2 ) and sodium silicate was constructed and named as Sheet-Ti/Na. The as-prepared Sheet-Ti/Na exhibited excellent flame retardancy and smoke suppression performance. In addition, the Sheet-Ti/Na can firmly adhere to the steel plate through hot pressing and adhesive bonding methods, acting as a non-traditional fireproof “coating”. This feasible coating method can effectively enhance the fireproof and thermal insulation of the steel plates under the action of the hydrocarbon fire at about 1100 ℃. After testing, the char layer of Sheet-Ti/Na can still firmly adhere to the steel plate without any detachment or cracking. Finally, a ceramic-like reaction among TiO 2 , APP, OPS and sodium silicate to generate pyrophosphates (TiP 2 O 7 and SiP 2 O 7 ) was clarified. The thermal insulation, flame retardancy and smoke suppression mechanisms of the Sheet-Ti/Na system also were stated. This work offers a promising strategy for rapidly and efficiently preparing fireproof and thermal insulation “coatings” for steel structures.

Facile and effective construction of superhydrophobic, multi-functional and durable coatings on steel structure

Zhenlin Tang,Meihuan Gao,Haidi Li,Ziyang Zhang,Xinying Su,Yingge Li,Zhishuang Han,Xinmeng Lv,Jing He,Zaihang Zheng,Yan Liu

Nowadays, steel is one of the most significant materials in industry and daily life. Unfortunately, the defects of steel structures such as collapse at high temperature, poor corrosion resistance, and bad surface functionality have severely restricted their further application. Applying functional coatings for steel structures is considered the effective strategy for settling theses disadvantages. Inspired by nature, eco-friendly, superhydrophobic, and multifunctional-integrated coatings were fabricated on steel via one-step spraying strategy in this paper. Along with silicon dioxide (SiO 2 ) nanoparticles and epoxy resin/silicone resin (EP/SR), the coatings are jointly constituted by hydrophobic flame retardants (M-ALHP@ZIF-8) prepared via multi-stage modification. Due to the formation of micro/nano-scaled rough structure with low surface energy, the water contact angle (WCA) and water sliding angle (WSA) of as-prepared coatings can reach 162.4° ± 1.2° and 2.8° ± 0.4°. The water repellency with low water adhesion can endow the surface of steel with excellent self-cleaning, anti-fouling, and long-lasting anti-corrosion ability. Additionally, the superhydrophobic coatings have displayed good mechanical robustness, chemical stability and weather resistance, which can exhibit certain actual values. Accorded with Zn-catalyzed charring effect of flame retardants, as-prepared coatings have possessed outstanding fire protection capacity with the lowest backside temperature of 181 °C after 1 h fire impact tests. Consequently, this work has provided a facile and effective route for synchronously tackling the key challenges of poor fire protection and surface functionality for steel structures, which will be expected to pave the wide pathway for constructing multifunctional coatings in more fields.
