Although solid waste is a good raw material for preparing foam ceramics , the mechanisms of the discrepancies in different solid wastes affecting the properties of foam ceramics remain unelucidated. In this study, the properties of tin tailings-based foam ceramics with different proportions of waste glass (WG) or scheelite tailings (ST) were measured. Significant discrepancies in the influence effects were observed, with higher closed porosity for added WG and higher apparent porosity for added ST. To interpret this phenomenon, the effects of the main fluxing agents of the ST and WG were investigated, and the results indicated that their influence effects were controlled by the type and content of the fluxing agent. Furthermore, the structure and crystalline phase of foam ceramics demonstrated that their compressive strength was jointly driven by their microstructure and crystal phases, but other properties depended only on the microstructure. The pore size and type were significantly affected by the change in liquid phase characteristics and aluminosilicate , with the addition of WG dramatically decreasing the number of pore windows and the addition of ST increasing the content of anorthite. Further sintering process analysis results revealed that the chemical reactions in materials change with chemical compositions, which resulted in significant differences in the crystalline compositions of the foam ceramics for WG and ST additions, and the presence of WG obviously reduced the formation temperature of the liquid phase. Overall, our research provides a theoretical basis for better utilizing different solid wastes to prepare foam ceramics.

Using tailings to prepare constructive materials is of great significance for sustainable development of mineral processing industry. In this study, the possibility of preparing tungsten tailing-based geopolymers was explored in detail. XRD , FTIR , PLM, SEM and XPS analyses were carried out to characterize the phase composition, chemical bonding, microstructure, chemical state, and interface properties of tungsten tailing-based geopolymers. Results showed tungsten tailings presented little activity using NaOH as activator, while geopolymers with 60% non-pretreatment tungsten tailing and 40% metakaolin presented a 3-day compressive strength of 8.4 MPa and 28-day compressive strength of 9.1 MPa. The geopolymerization products of tungsten tailing-based geopolymers were N-A-S-H gels and aluminosilicate zeolite crystals, while tungsten tailings were wrapped by metakaolin-derived geopolymerization phases as aggregates with interfaces containing Si–O–Si bonding between quartz in tungsten tailings and zeolite and/or gel phase in metakaolin-derived geopolymer in the geopolymerization process. Besides, the leaching test results indicated that the immobilization efficiency of T6M4 geopolymers for Mn and Pb derived from tungsten tailings reached up to 97.28% and 99.95%, respectively. This research results provide a new idea for utilization of tungsten tailings on a large scale.

The use of tailings for the preparation of ceramic foams is considered a safe and effective method for disposing of them. However, it is unclear whether wolframite tailings (WT) and scheelite tailings (ST) can synergistically be used to prepare ceramic foams, and the foaming process remains unclear. This study investigated the properties of ceramic foams prepared from these tungsten tailings at different ST contents, calcination temperatures, holding times, and SiC additions. The study found that the ceramic foams exhibited appropriate properties when the ratio of WT to ST was 6.5:3.5, with a bulk density of 0.823 g/cm 3 , a compressive strength of 1.557 MPa, an apparent porosity of 48.433 %, and a water absorption ratio of 58.477 %, which is expected to be used as a new type of material to replace the traditional material. Furthermore, changes in calcination temperature, holding time, and SiC addition significantly affected the properties. As these variables increased, the bulk density and compressive strength of ceramic foams gradually decreased, while the apparent porosity and water absorption ratio initially increased before subsequently decreasing. Further analysis indicated that the samples underwent oxidation reactions prior to the decomposition of CaCO 3 and CaF 2 . These findings offered valuable insights into the comprehensive utilization of tungsten tailings and the low-cost preparation of ceramic foams for industrial applications.

Polypyrrole-decorated tungsten tailing particles (PPY-TTF) were prepared via the in situ polymerization of pyrrole in the presence of tungsten tailing particles (TTF), and then carefully characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and thermogravimetric analysis (TG) analyses. The effect of PPY-TTF on the flame retardancy, smoke suppression property and ageing resistance of intumescent fire-resistant coatings was investigated by a fire protection test, smoke density test and cone calorimeter test. The results show that PPY-TTF exerts excellent cooperative effect on enhancing the flame retardancy and smoke suppression properties of the intumescent fire-retardant coatings, which is ascribed to the formation of more cross-linking structures in the condense phase that enhance the compactness and thermal stability of intumescent char. The cooperative effect of PPY-TTF in the coatings depends on its content, and the coating containing 3 wt% PPY-TTF exhibits the best cooperative effect among the samples, showing a 10.7% reduction in mass loss and 35.4% reduction in flame-spread rating compared to that with 3% TTF. The accelerated ageing test shows that the presence of PPY-TTF greatly slows down the blistering and powdering phenomenon of the coatings, thus endowing the coating with the super durability of fire resistance and smoke suppression property. This work provides a new strategy for the resource utilization of tungsten tailing in the field of flame-retardant materials.

Tungsten tailing is a great deal of solid waste produced in the production process of tungsten metal, for which there is no simple and effective treatment method in the world. The success synthesis of layered double hydroxide composites (TTF-LDH) by co-precipitation method from tungsten tailing is a feasible way to solve this problem. The structure and properties of TTF-LDH were confirmed by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The obtained TTF-LDH was in combination with intumescent flame retardants (IFR) to achieve a series of intumescent fire resistance coatings. The effects of TTF-LDH on the fire protection, smoke suppression and anti-ageing performances of coatings were evaluated by fire resistance test , smoke density test, cone calorimeter test and accelerated ageing test, while the flame-retardant mechanism of TTF-LDH in coatings was revealed. The results illustrate that an appropriate amount of TTF-LDH can remarkably enhance smoke suppression and fire-resistant abilities of coatings, among which the coating containing 3 wt % TTF-LDH (IFRC-LDH 3 ) exhibits the optimal synergistic effect , revealing a smoke density rating value of 17.3%, a total heat release of 7.0 MJ/m 2 and an equilibrium backside temperature of 146.2 °C at 900 s. Meanwhile, the addition of TTF-LDH can strengthen the char formation and thermal stability abilities of the coatings, and the residual weight of IFRC-LDH 3 rises to 35.7% at 800 °C, as supported by thermogravimetric (TG) analysis. The results of accelerated ageing test demonstrate that the presence of TTF-LDH can strengthen structural stability of coating, decrease migration and decomposition of IFR, thus giving the coating better integrity and durability of fire-resistant and smoke suppression properties.
