ABSRACT To extract lutetium (Lu) from LiCl-KCl fused salt, the electrode reaction mechanisms of Lu on W and liquid Zn electrodes were systematically investigated using a series of electrochemical methods such as cycle voltammetry (CV), square wave voltammetry (SWV), reverse chronopotentiometry (RCP), etc. The diffusion coefficient and diffusion activation energy of Lu(III) in LiCl-KCl fused salt were measured by CV. The results of CV, SWV and open circuit chronopotentiometry (OCP) confirmed that seven Lu-Zn intermetallic compounds were formed when Lu was deposited on Zn film electrode. Kinetic data of Lu(III)/Lu on W and liquid Zn electrodes, i.e., exchange current density, charge transfer resistance and reaction activation energy, were determined and compared by linear polarization (LP) at 773-848 K. Furthermore, the thermodynamic date such as equilibrium potential and formation Gibbs free energy of Lu-Zn alloys were also calculated and analyzed according to the OCP. The results demonstrate that the liquid Zn electrode is conducive to extract Lu from LiCl-KCl fused salt. Thus, constant potential electrolysis (CPE) was conducted at -1.58 V for 9 h on liquid Zn cathode to extract Lu from fused salt. The electrolytic product was composed of Zn and LuZn12 phases checked by XRD and SEM-EDS. The extraction rate of Lu is reached up to 98.37% based on the concentration change of Lu(III) in fused salt, which confirmed the feasibility to extract Lu employing liquid Zn electrode.

AlCl 3 /amide (acetamide, propionamide, butyramide) ionic liquids were used as the electrolytes to study the electrodeposition behavior of aluminum on a tungsten electrode. Cyclic voltammograms on the tungsten electrode indicate that Al(III) ions can be reduced to aluminum only within the molar ratio range of 1.1 to 1.5 and the reduction potentials of Al(III) ions strongly depend on the molar ratio of AlCl 3 /amide. Raman spectra results reveal that the electroactive specie of AlCl 3 /amide ionic liquids is Al 2 Cl 7
− . Aluminum coatings were prepared at −0.25 V (vs. Al/Al 3+ ) and at 313 K in AlCl 3 /amide ionic liquids with the molar ratio of 1.3. The SEM and cross-sectional SEM images show that all the obtained aluminum films are silver-colored, thick, and adherent. The EDS and XRD analysis confirm that the obtained deposits are pure aluminum. The present results can provide a new route for aluminum electrodeposition under ambient conditions.

Cyclic voltammetry, square wave voltammetry, linear polarization, chronopotentiometry and chronoamperometry were performed to investigate the electrochemical properties of Y(III) on W and Pb electrodes in LiCl–KCl eutectic melts. The diffusion coefficient of Y(III) measured by various techniques was in the order of 10−5. The nucleation of Y on W electrode was found to comply with the instantaneous nucleation mechanism. With increasing temperature, the exchange current densities increased and the charge-transfer resistances decreased, and exchange current densities are distinctly larger on liquid Pb electrode compared with W electrode. In addition, the co-deposition mechanism of Y(III) and Pb(II) on W electrode was also studied and four Pb–Y intermetallics could be detected. The feasibility of extraction metallic Y from the melts was explored by co-deposition on W electrode and under-potential deposition on liquid Pb electrode and the extracted products consisted of Pb3Y and Pb phases.

The electrode reaction of Pr(III) and coreduction of Pb(II) and Pr(III) were studied on an inert W electrode in eutectic LiCl-KCl to extract Pr from molten salt. The electrode process kinetic of Pr(III) on W electrode was firstly explored employing cyclic voltammetry (CV) and Tafel technique, such as the diffusion coefficient of Pr(III) in eutectic LiCl-KCl and the exchange current density ( j 0 ) for Pr(III)/Pr(0) couple and the electrode reaction activation energy. Then, various electrochemical techniques were used to investigate the coreduction of Pb(II) and Pr(III). Four cathode current peaks ascribed to the formation of Pr x Pb y intermetallic compounds were detected, which indicated that the Pr could deposit on pre-deposited Pb film, react with Pb, and form Pr x Pb y intermetallic compounds. Furthermore, the electrolytic products formed by galvanostatic electrolysis were characterized by scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy dispersive X-ray diffraction, which illustrated the formation of PrPb 3 intermetallic compound in LiCl-KCl-PbCl 2 -PrCl 3 melt.

Rare-earth metal neodymium is an important raw material for NdFeB permanent magnets, and its demand has significantly increased in recent years. Molten salt electrolysis is the main method for the production of metal neodymium, so the study of the electrodeposition process of neodymium ions in molten salt at the cathode is of great significance for the production of metal neodymium. In this paper, the electrochemical deposition process of neodymium ions on a tungsten working electrode was studied in a LiF-NdF 3 -Nd 2 O 3 molten salt system using electrochemical methods such as cyclic voltammetry and open circuit potential. Additionally, the influence of LiF content in the molten salt on the electrodeposition process was analyzed. The experimental results indicate that the reduction of neodymium ions in the LiF-NdF 3 -Nd 2 O 3 molten salt system consists of two stepwise quasi-reversible redox reactions: Nd(III) → Nd(II) and Nd(II) → Nd(0). The corresponding reduction peak potentials are −0.78 V and −1.19 V, respectively. The Nd(III) → Nd(II) reaction is solely diffusion-controlled, while the Nd(II) → Nd(0) reaction is governed by both surface control and diffusion control in the electrochemical process. The increase in LiF content in the molten salt leads to a shift of the cathodic overpotential in the positive direction. When the LiF content is high, the reduction of neodymium ions on the electrode becomes unstable, making it unfavorable for the deposition of metal neodymium on the tungsten electrode.

The preparation of high-purity and high-value alloys is of great significance to industrial production. The purpose of this study is to explore the process of producing aluminum-silicon (Al-Si) alloy by the electrochemical Al-Si eutectoid method. The electrochemical behavior of aluminum and silicon on tungsten electrode was studied by cyclic voltammetry and galvanostatic chronopotentiometry. The effect of SiO 2 addition on the eutectoid behavior of Al and Si was studied. The results show that the precipitation potential of Al is about –1.35 V (versus Pt), and the initial precipitation potential of Si is about –0.8 V (versus Pt). The precipitation process of silicon includes two reduction stages. In addition, the precipitation of Si is a quasireversible reaction controlled by diffusion process. Finally, Al-Si alloy was obtained by potentiostatic electrodeposition at –1.8 V potential, indicating that Al and Si would codeposit at this potential.

The electrocatalytic HMF oxidation reaction (HMFOR) is one of the promising technologies for the valorization of biomass derivatives and potential replacements for the energy-consuming oxygen evolution reaction (OER). For the most investigated Ni-based electrode, the in situ reconstruction from Ni(OH)2 to NiOOH is hardly avoidable during the electro-oxidation reaction, which is also a highly indispensable prerequisite towards HMFOR. Herein, we developed an efficient strategy of sacrificing W to investigate the effect of surface defects on the self-reconstruction of Ni for promoting HMFOR. It was rationalized that the selective and rapid exsolution of the W species from the as-prepared NiW layer created a porous structure and induced lattice defects on the surface, which facilitated the ion and electron transportation, and further promoted the in situ reconstruction for the formation of higher oxidated Ni with superior activity for HMFOR. This work offers a novel and low-cost means to enrich the active sites for the electrocatalytic upgrading of HMF and other bio-derived platforms.
