Boron-intercalation-triggered crystalline transition of Pd nanosheet assemblies for an enhanced oxygen reduction reaction

Hongjing Wang,Tongqing Zhou,Shan Xu,Kai Deng,Hongjie Yu,You Xu,Xiaonian Li,Ziqiang Wang,Liang Wang

The development of effective and stable cathode electrocatalysts is highly desired for fuel cells. Controlling the composition and morphology of Pd-based materials can provide a great opportunity to improve their oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) performance. Here, we report the synthesis of hexagonal close-packed (hcp) Pd2B nanosheet assemblies (Pd2B NAs) via the boronation reaction between as-synthesized Pd NAs and N,N-dimethylformamide. The hcp Pd2B NAs with uniform pore distribution can provide sufficient active sites for ORRs. The insertion of B atoms can induce the phase transition from face-centered cubic structure to hcp structure, as the most thermodynamically stable phase in the Pd-B alloy, which is beneficial for enhancing the ORR stability and toxicity resistance. Therefore, the hcp Pd2B NAs exhibit superior mass activity, specific activity and excellent stability for ORR. The present strategy of boron-intercalation-triggered crystalline transition of Pd-based nanomaterials is valuable for the design of metal–nonmetal catalysts with enhanced performance.

Pd nanoflakes epitaxially grown on defect MoS2 nanosheets for enhanced nitroarenes hydrogenation to anilines

Shanhui Zhu,Zexiang Lv,Xiangyu Jia,Jiamin Wang,Xiaoming Li,Mei Dong,Weibin Fan

Hydrogenation of nitroarenes to anilines under mild conditions is attractive from both theoretical and practical viewpoints. Here, high-performance catalyst with layered Pd nanoparticles epitaxially growing on ultrathin MoS 2 nanosheets (Pd/MoS 2 ) were prepared. It shows surprisingly high catalytic activity, selectivity and stability for hydrogenation of various nitroarenes to corresponding anilines; the turnover frequency is one or two magnitudes higher than conventional Pd-based catalysts. Surface sulfur vacancies are formed on MoS 2 nanosheets with low formation energy barrier. These S vacancies provide efficient positions for adsorbing Pd atoms, which enables facile cleavage of N–O bond as result of strong interfacial electron interaction that decreases activation energy by 0.41 eV in comparison with conventional Pd catalysts. In situ spectroscopy and DFT calculation results reveal a dual-site mechanism, in which surface Pd sites adsorb and dissociate H 2 into active H*, and then readily reacts with nearby activated nitroarene to form aniline on interfacial Pd-MoS 2 sites.

The ultrathin palladium nanosheets for sensitive and visual Hg2+ detection in the food chain

Lulu Kong,Chongchong Wang,Weijie Yang,Lin Zhou,Shaohua Wei

The detection of mercury, one of the ten most dangerous chemicals, is significant to provide helpful information for assessing mercury toxicity and health risks. However, it is a challenge to explore simple, sensitive, accurate, and cheap Hg 2+ detection methods. Noble metal nanomaterials are used for Hg 2+ detection by the colorimetric method widely. Still, the pure noble metal materials’ detection limit of Hg 2+ is high, and sensitivity enhancement usually requires further complex modification. Here, we use a facile one-step route to synthesize ultra-thin two-dimensional palladium nanosheets (PdNS), which have high selectivity and sensitivity for Hg 2+ detection by colorimetric method with a low detection limit (0.55 ppb). The detection of Hg 2+ by PdNS involves multiple mechanisms, including the formation of amalgam and PdO to improve the peroxidase-mimic activity of PdNS and PdNS motor function to increase its collision probability with the detection reactant. The PdNS can be used to detect Hg 2+ in various actual samples. The detection results are highly consistent with the data obtained by the atomic fluorescence spectrometer (AFS). Then, we developed a Hg 2+ detection kit, which can realize simple, sensitive, and accurate Hg 2+ detection by naked eye or cellphone at a meager cost (0.3 dollars each sample).

Electrochemiluminescence ratio sensor for detecting MCP-1 based on s-PdNS

Weiran Mao,Xiaoyan Zhang,Yuanyuan Yin,Xiaohua Tang,Qingqing Jiang,Xia Chen,Xiaoliang Chen

This study proposes a novel sandwich-based ratio electrochemiluminescence (ECL) immunosensor for detecting monocyte chemotactic protein-1 (MCP-1), a marker of cardiovascular disease. We synthesized sulfur-doped palladium nanosheets (S-PdNS), which possess a stable structure and uniform morphology, and can quench signals generated by the S 2 O 8 2− /O 2 ECL system. Using glutaraldehyde (GA), we conjugated luminol to these nanosheets and combined them with a secondary antibody. This modification enabled the nanomaterial to produce a new luminol signal as an internal reference for detection while quenching the S 2 O 8 2− /O 2 ECL signal. To date, no studies have utilized both mechanisms for detection. Furthermore, the deposition of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) on the surface of the glassy carbon electrode (GCE) allowed for increased antibody binding and improved electron transmission in the ECL system. When trace analytes are present, the S 2 O 8 2− /O 2 ECL signal decreases, and the luminol ECL signal increases. This setup allowed us to obtain two signals from one measurement and use the ratio to construct a standard curve, significantly reducing the possibility of misjudgment. Under optimal conditions, the linear detection range for MCP-1 is 10 –2.5 pg mL −1 to 10 3  pg mL −1 , with a detection limit of 1.6 fg mL −1 (S / N  = 3). The immunosensor also exhibited excellent selectivity, repeatability, and stability, expanding the application of the dual luminescence mechanism and providing an effective method for early monitoring of cardiovascular disease.

Surfactant-Assisted Synthesis of Palladium Nanosheets and Nanochains for the Electrooxidation of Ethanol

Min Yang,Mingyuan Pang,Jianyu Chen,Fahui Gao,Hongliang Li,Peizhi Guo

The synthesis of metal nanometer electrocatalysts with a two-dimensional (2D) structure or rich active sites has become a research hotspot in electrocatalysis. In this work, surfactant hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) was used to assist the synthesis and assembly of Pd ultrathin nanosheet with the help of Mo(CO)6 in the start system. Pd nanochain composed of nanoparticles is obtained under the same condition, replacing CTAB with carrageenan only. Electrochemical measurements showed that the catalytic peak current density for the electrooxidation of ethanol can reach 2145 mA mg–1 for the Pd nanosheet assembly (NSA) and 1696 mA mg–1 for Pd nanochains. Pd nanosheet assembly also has a lower electron-transfer barrier, better catalytic stability, and antipoisoning performance than that of Pd nanochains. The mechanism of Pd nanosheets and nanochains catalysts the enhanced electrocatalytic activity toward ethanol oxidation has been discussed based on the experimental data.

Nanoscale engineering of porous Fe-doped Pd nanosheet assemblies for efficient methanol and ethanol electrocatalyses

Hui Xu,Hongyuan Shang,Cheng Wang,Liujun Jin,Chunyan Chen,Yukou Du

Although great successes have been accomplished on the controlled synthesis of 2D and 3D Pd-containing nanomaterials, tapping into the novel Pd-containing electrocatalysts that combined the advantages of both 2D and 3D structures remains a significant challenge. Here, an approach to systematically produce porous Fe-doped Pd nanosheet assemblies (NSAs) with a geometry tuning from PdFe hollow nanospheres (HNSs), PdFe nanocages (NCs), to PdFe nanoplates (NPs) is reported. The inherent ultrathin and porous features endow these PdFe catalysts with excellent electrocatalytic performance. As a result, the optimized 3D PdFe NCs show a much-improved methanol oxidation reaction (MOR) and ethanol oxidation reaction (EOR) activities in comparison with PdFe HNSs, Pd NPs, and commercial Pd/C catalysts. Moreover, these PdFe nanocatalysts also display greatly enhanced electrocatalytic stability, which can endure 500 cycles with negligible activity loss and structural changes. The mechanism investigations reveal that the introduced Fe atom efficiently modulates the electronic structure of Pd, leading to the downshift of the d-band center of Pd, which is beneficial for the adsorption of reactants. Moreover, the porous nanosheet assembly structure can provide rich mass and electron transfer channels, further boosting the improvement of electrocatalytic performance.

In Situ Growth of Pd Nanosheets on g-C3N4 Nanosheets with Well-Contacted Interface and Enhanced Catalytic Performance for 4-Nitrophenol Reduction

Kai Gu,Xueting Pan,Weiwei Wang,Junjie Ma,Yun Sun,Hailong Yang,Heyun Shen,Zhijun Huang,Huiyu Liu

Loading novel metal nanosheets onto nanosheet support can improve their catalytic performance, but the morphological incompatibility makes it difficult to construct a well-contacted interface, which is of particular interest in supported catalysts. Herein, Pd nanosheets (Pd NSs) are supported onto graphitic carbon nitride nanosheets (CNNSs) with intimate face-to-face contact through an in situ growth method. This method overcomes the limitations of the morphological incompatibility and ensures the intimate interfacial contact between Pd NSs and CNNSs. The nitrogen-rich nature of CNNSs endows Pd NSs with abundant anchoring sites, which optimizes the electronic structure and improves the chemical and morphological stability of Pd NSs. The supported Pd NSs demonstrate high dispersion and exhibit largely enhanced activity toward the reduction of 4-nitrophenol. The concentration-normalized rate constant is up to 3052 min −1 g −1 L, which is 5.4 times higher than that obtained by unsupported Pd NSs. No obvious deactivation is observed after six runs of the recycling experiments. It is believed that the supported novel metal nanosheets with the intimately contacted interface may show promising applications in catalysis.

Engineering Two-Dimensional Pd Nanoplates with Exposed Highly Active {100} Facets Toward Colorimetric Acid Phosphatase Detection

Chuanxia Chen,Wendong Liu,Pengjuan Ni,Yuanyuan Jiang,Chenghui Zhang,Bo Wang,Jinkai Li,Bingqiang Cao,Yizhong Lu,Wei Chen

Enzyme-like activity and efficiency of nanomaterials are strongly controlled by their size, composition, and structure, and hence the structural parameters need to be optimized. Here, we report that two-dimensional Pd nanoplates enclosed by {100}-facets [{100}PdSP@rGO] exhibit substantially enhanced intrinsic oxidase-like activities relative to the {111}-facets ones and Pd nanocubes in catalyzing the chromogenic reaction of 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine. By taking ascorbic acid 2-phosphate as the substrate, which transforms to ascorbic acid in the presence of acid phosphatase (ACP), the {100}PdSP@rGO could be used as an efficient nanozyme for colorimetric ACP detection without resorting to destructive H2O2. A good linear relationship from 0.01 to 6.0 mU/mL with a detection limit of 8.3 μU/mL is obtained, which is better than most previously reported ACP assays. Importantly, the excellent assay performance could be successfully applied to ACP determination in serum samples with high accuracy. This study demonstrates that the enzyme-like activity of nanomaterials could be finely tuned simultaneously by controlling their exposed crystal facets and high specific surface area.

A novel electrochemical aptasensor for serum dopamine detection based on methylene blue-integrated m-PdNFs signal material

Chengli Zhang,Xun You,Yuliang Li,Yuanyuan Zuo,Wei Wang,DanDan Li,ShengWei Huang,Hangzhi Hu,Feng Yuan,Fuqiang Shao,Minggang Yin

In this work, an aptamer was used as an identifying molecule and a novel amplification strategy based on Ce-MOF and m-PdNFs-G4-MBs for the sensitive detection of dopamine (DA) is demonstrated. Notably, a novel dopamine aptamer with higher affinity and specificity was chosen, and the PdNF was functionalized with MB via embeddedness and surface decoration for enhancing the intensity of electrochemical signal. The synthesized m-PdNFs-G4-MBs nanocomposite not only acts as the electrochemical indicator but also to label single-stranded DNA (S2) to acquire signaling probes (m-PdNFs-S2-G4-MBs) as a nanocarrier . Besides, an -NH 2 modified single-strand DNA (S1) is designed, and form an S1-AP double-strand by annealing reaction with aptamer (AP), then the S1-AP is fixed on the Ce-MOF surface, decorated on electrode. In the presence of DA, DA bind to the AP and S1 regain single-stranded structure. And then, the single-stranded S1 recognizes m-PdNFs-S2-G4-MBs and captures them, ultimately producing an enhanced electrical signal. Due to the extraordinary conductive performance of Ce-MOF and the signal amplification of m-PdNFs-S2-G4-MBs, the new detection platform achieves a minimum detection limit to 6 pmol/L for DA and with a good specificity. Prominently, the results obtained from our platform for serum DA detection are highly consistent with the UPLC-MS method. These results suggest that this new platform has the potential to provide a convenient and efficient tool for the diagnosis of multiple neurological disorders in the future. This work also provides a good strategy for the construction of other biomolecule sensors.

Tailored Surfaces on 2D Material: UFO-Like Cyclodextrin-Pd Nanosheet/Metal Organic Framework Janus Nanoparticles for Synergistic Cancer Therapy

Lingyu Zhang,Shengnan Li,Xiangjun Chen,Tingting Wang,Lu Li,Zhongmin Su,Chungang Wang

The development of novel Janus nanostructure with desired compositions and functionalities is essential for various applications, especially as drug delivery system to deliver multiple payloads with total different solubility. Here, a unidentified flying object (UFO)-like cyclodextrin–palladium nanosheet/zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 Janus nanoparticle (CD–PdNS/ZIF-8 JNP) prepared via a selective coating of polyacrylic acid (PAA) on one of the flat surfaces of 2D PdNS followed by further formation of ZIF-8 on a PAA template, and alternative modification of CDs on exposed PdNS surface is reported. The CD-PdNS and PAA-ZIF-8 parts are designed to load hydrophobic10-hydroxycamptothecin (HCPT) and hydrophilic doxorubicin (Dox) independently for synergistic chemotherapy (combination index = 0.65). Because of the broad near-infrared (NIR) absorption band of PdNSs, the photothermal effect of UFO-like CD-PdNS/ZIF-8 JNPs in NIR-II biowindow is studied. The in vitro and in vivo results show that the dual-drug loaded JNPs under a laser-irradiation group present highest cancer therapeutic efficiency. The good performance is due to the synergistic chemotherapy and photothermal therapy in NIR-II biowindow. This work significantly broadens the application prospects of metal–metal organic framework JNPs by rationally designing their compositions and discovering related physiochemical properties.

Emerging investigator series: enhanced peroxidase-like activity and improved antibacterial performance of palladium nanosheets by an alginate-corona

Minghao Ma,Ruixia Wang,Lining Xu,Jingjing Du,Ming Xu,Sijin Liu

Once released into the natural environment, ecological macromolecules can rapidly form a coronal architecture on the surface of engineered nanomaterials, altering their intrinsic physicochemical properties as well as nano–bio interactions. Palladium (Pd)-based nanomaterials attract an increasing attention in the fields of environmental science, due to their remarkable catalytic activity. However, the current understanding of the interplay between Pd-based nanomaterials and ecological macromolecules remains limited. In this study, taking two-dimensional Pd nanosheets (Pd NSs) as a representative, we characterized the corona formation of four ecological substances (i.e. humic acid, fulvic acid, alginate and Suwannee River natural organic matter) on the Pd NS surface, and assessed their influence on the peroxidase-like activity of Pd NSs. Our findings showed that the overcoating of alginate-corona on Pd NS surface could significantly enhance the peroxidase-like activity of Pd NSs, but not the other three, thus leading to the fast generation of hydroxyl radicals (˙HO). Moreover, the antibacterial activity of the pristine and alginate-coronated Pd NSs was respectively examined with both Gram-positive bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus cereus) and Gram-negative bacteria (Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa). The growth inhibition assay yielded the half maximal inhibitory concentration (IC50) values of the pristine Pd NSs ranging from 4.6 to 12.1 μg mL−1 and the alginate-coronated Pd NSs ranging from 2.0 to 6.7 μg mL−1, respectively. The higher toxicity of the alginate-coronated Pd NSs was demonstrated to be attributed to the formation of alginate-corona and enhanced ˙HO radical production ability, giving rise to bacterial membrane damage, oxidative stress, biofilm inhibition and cell death. Our findings may facilitate an in-depth understanding of the crucial role of environmental corona in the exotoxicological risks and antibacterial performance of engineered nanomaterials.

Advanced Palladium Nanosheet-Enhanced Phototherapy for Treating Wound Infection Caused by Multidrug-Resistant Bacteria

Shanshan Li,Mingzhu Lu,Chenxi Dai,Bolong Xu,Nier Wu,Lin Wang,Chao Liu,Fangzhou Chen,Haokun Yang,Zhijun Huang,Huiyu Liu,Dongsheng Zhou

With the increasing spread of multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacteria worldwide, it is needed to develop antibiotics-alternative strategies for the treatment of bacterial infections. This work develops a multifunctional single-component palladium nanosheet (PdNS) with broad-spectrum and highly effective bactericidal activity against MDR bacteria. PdNS exerts its endogenous nanoknife (mechanical cutting) effect and peroxidase-like activity independent of light. Under near-infrared region (NIR) light irradiation, PdNS exhibits photothermal effect to produce local heat and meanwhile possesses photodynamic effect to generate 1 O 2 ; notably, PdNS has catalase-like activity-dependent extra photodynamic effect upon H 2 O 2 addition. PdNS+H 2 O 2 +NIR employs a collectively synergistic mechanism of nanoknife effect, peroxidase/catalase-like catalytic activity, photothermal effect, and photodynamic effect for bacterial killing. PdNS+H 2 O 2 +NIR causes compensatory elevated phospholipid biosynthesis, disordered energy metabolism, increased cellular ROS levels and excessive oxidative stress, and inhibited nucleic acid synthesis in bacteria. In mice, PdNS+H 2 O 2 +NIR gives >92.7% bactericidal rates at infected wounds and almost the full recovery of infected wounds, and it leads to extensive down-regulation of proinflammatory pathways and comprehensive up-regulation of wound healing pathways, conferring elevated inflammation resolution and meanwhile accelerated wound repair. PdNS+H 2 O 2 +NIR represents a highly efficient nanoplatform for photoenhanced treatment of superficial infections.
