Abstract PdAu 3:1/C-1 and PdAu 3:1/C-2 nanoparticles were prepared in methylene chloride and water, respectively. The syntheses featured the use of tetrabutylammonium hydroxide as a phase-transfer agent and stabilizer. Electrochemical characterization showed that compared with PdAu 3:1/C-2, PdAu 3:1/C-1 had superior ethanol oxidation reaction (EOR) activity in alkaline media. The results of X-ray powder diffraction indicated that PdAu 3:1/C-1 was an alloy, whereas PdAu 3:1/C-2 was a heterogeneous mixture of the two metals. Moreover, transmission electron microscope analyses revealed that the PdAu 3:1/C-1 nanoparticles dispersed homogeneously on the carbon carrier without evident aggregation. Further, the X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy results demonstrated that the hydroxyl content was higher on the surface of PdAu 3:1/C-1 than that of PdAu 3:1/C-2. The increase of adsorptive hydroxyl on the surface of PdAu 3:1/C-1 could facilitate the adsorption and oxidation of CO on the catalyst surface, thus improving EOR activity and catalyst stability. The green biogenic PdAu nanoparticles (bio-PdAu NPs) exhibits remarkable catalytic performance in hydrogenation, which is highly desired. However, the catalytic principles and effectiveness of bio-Pd x Au y NPs in response to various catalytic systems (electrocatalysis and suspension-catalysis) are unclear. Herein, a facile synthetic strategy for bio-Pd x Au y NPs synthesis with controlled size and the catalytic principles for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and azo dye degradation is reported. In the biosynthetic process, the size and composition of the bio-Pd x Au y NPs could be precisely controlled by predesigning the precursor mass ratio of Pd/Au, and the Au proportion showed a linear relationship with the size of NPs (R 2 = 0.92). The obtained bio-Pd x Au y NPs exhibit variable activity in electrocatalysis (HER) and suspension-catalysis (azo dye degradation). For electrocatalysis, the formation of conductive networks that facilitates the extracellular electron transfer is crucial. It was revealed that the bio-Pd 2 Au 8 exhibited superior electrocatalytic performance in HER/toward hydrogen evolution, with a maximum current density of 1.65 mA cm −2 , which was 1.54 times higher than that commercial Pd/C (1.07 mA cm −2 ). The high electrocatalytic activity was attributed to its appropriate size (81.38 ± 6.14 nm) and uniform distribution on the cell surface, which promoted the extracellular electron transfer by constructing a conductive network between catalyst and electrode. However, for suspension-catalysis, the size effect and synergistic effect of bimetallic NPs have a more prominent effect on the degradation of azo dyes. As the increase of Au proportion the particle size decreases, and the catalytic activity of bio-Pd x Au y improved significantly. The response principles of bio-Pd x Au y proposed in this study provide a reliable reference for the rational design of bio-based bimetallic catalysts with enhanced catalytic performance.

Efficient and portable electrochemical biosensors are received to evaluation of pesticides in the environment, which can make great significance for food safety. In this study, the Co-based oxides with a kind of hierarchical porous hollow and nanocages were constructed, in which the materials (Co3O4-NC) were encapsulated with PdAu nanoparticles (NPs). Due to the unique porous structure, the changeable valence state of cobalt and the synergistic effect of bimetallic PdAuNPs, PdAu@Co3O4-NC possessed excellent electron pathways, and showed more exposed active sites. Accordingly, the porous Co-based oxides have been applied to construct an acetylcholinesterase (AChE) electrochemical biosensor, which showed good performance for organophosphorus pesticides (OPs) detection. The optimum biosensing platform based on nanocomposites was applied to exhibit highly sensitive determination of omethoate and chlorpyrifos, with the relative low detection limit of 6.125 × 10−15 M and 5.10 × 10−13 M, respectively. And a wide detection range of 6.125 × 10−15 ∼ 6.125 × 10−6 M and 5.10 × 10−13 ∼ 5.10 × 10−6 M for these two pesticides were achieved. Therefore, the PdAu@Co3O4-NC may represent a powerful tool for ultrasensitive sensing of OPs, and have great potential application.

The research and develpoment of biomass waste derived carbon materials have attracted tremendous research interests in fabrication of high performance electrochemical sensors. In this work, noble metal NPs (i.e., Pd, Au and Ag) loading on Loofah sponge-derived well-ordered macroporous carbon (OMC)/ N -doped carbon thin layer (N-C) was designed by a general approach. This polydopamine (PDA)-based method has the advantages of simplicity, high efficiency and versatility. In virtue of the synergistic contribution from 3D macroporous carbon scaffold and highly active nobel metal NPs, these as-prepared Pd@OMC/N-C, Au@OMC/N-C and Ag@OMC/N-C electrode exhibit excellent electrochemical sensing performances for H 2 O 2 reduction, glucose oxidation and nitrite oxidation, respectively. Thus, 3D OMC/N-C loaded noble metal nanoparticles are promising materials for a wide spectrum of electrochemical sensor and biosensor applications.

Palladium@gold nanoparticle modified three-dimensional-reduced graphene oxide (3D-rGO/Pd@Au) was coupled with carboxymethyl-β-cyclodextrin to form a novel nanocomposite (3D-rGO/Pd@Au/CM-β-CD). The 3D-rGO/Pd@Au/CM-β-CD served as a chiral sensing interface for the electrochemical enantiorecognition of tyrosine (Tyr) via a differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) approach. The 3D-rGO/Pd@Au demonstrates good electrical conductivity and efficient catalytic activity as an electrochemical indicator. Simultaneously, the CM-β-CD displays a supramolecular chiral selectivity to reveal a higher binding affinity to the target L-tyrosine (L-Tyr) than to D-tyrosine (D-Tyr). Under the optimized determining conditions, the oxidation peak current ratio of L-Tyr to D-Tyr (IL/ID) was 2.12, meanwhile, the peak currents of the two isomers were linearly proportional to the concentration over the range of 0.8–130 μM with LODs of 52 nM and 96 nM for L- and D-Tyr (S/N = 3), respectively. This approach exhibits distinguished sensitivity, excellent selectivity and good reproducibility, as well as great stability, which can accurately determine the relative content of L- or D-Tyr enantiomers in a racemic solution.
