Monodisperse hollow mesoporous PdCo alloy nanospheres are prepared via a simple galvanic replacement reaction. The as-prepared PdCo hollow nanospheres have small diameter, such as Pd 78 Co 22 nanospheres of diameter about 25 nm and mesoporous shells about 4–5 nm. The Pd 78 Co 22 hollow mesoporous nanospheres possess the largest electrochemical active surface areas (ECSA, 53.91 m 2 g −1 ), mass activity (1488 mA mg −1 ) and specific activity (2.76 mA cm −2 ) towards to methanol oxidation relative to the Pd 68 Co 32 , Pd 92 Co 8 hollow mesoporous nanospheres and commercial Pd/C catalysts. Moreover, the activity of Pd 78 Co 22 after long-term stability tests is still the best and even better than those of fresh Pd 68 Co 32 and commercial Pd/C catalysts. The PdCo catalysts not only effectively reduce the Pd usage by forming hollow structure, but also fully realize the Pd-Co alloying effects for enhancing the methanol oxidation catalytic performance.

Modifying the electronic structure of precious metals by alloying with non-precious metals is a proven strategy for enhancing the performance of dehydrogenation catalysts. In this work, a PdCo alloy catalyst supported on N -doped carbon dots (NCDs) was synthesized using a straightforward hydrothermal and reduction process. This catalyst effectively promoted the dehydrogenation of formic acid without the need for any additives at 323 K. The confinement effect of NCDs facilitated the formation of uniformly dispersed PdCo alloy particles (average size of 2.7 nm). X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis revealed that the addition of Co not only increases the electron density of Pd but also enhances the electronic support from the electron-rich N atoms in NCDs, thereby significantly improving catalytic activity. Through optimization of the Pd-to-Co molar ratio, it was determined that Pd 9 Co 1 /NCDs exhibited superior activity for formic acid dehydrogenation. The turnover frequency of the catalyst was 593 h −1 and the activation energy of the dehydrogenation process was 39.3 kJ·mol −1 . This research established an experimental basis for designing noble metal-based catalysts with enhanced catalytic efficiency.

In this work, three-dimensional trimetallic Pt–Pd–Co alloyed nanoflowers are fabricated by a facile one-pot solvothermal strategy, with the assistance of oleylamine as the solvent, surfactant, and reducing agents, along with cetylpyridinium chloride (CPC) as the co-surfactant and shape-directing agents. Their morphology and crystal structure were investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning transmission electron microscope (STEM), and X-ray photoelectron spectra (XPS) in details. The respective electrochemically active surface area (ECSA) is estimated to be 32.53 m 2 g −1 , and current density is 132.91 mA cm −2 for the electrooxidation of ethylene glycol (EG). These values are much higher than those of PtPdCo nanoparticles, PtPd nanoparticles, commercial Pt black, and Pd black under the identical conditions, showing the improved catalytic activity of Pt–Pd–Co nanoflowers. The excellent performances are attributed to the specific structure and synergistic interactions of the trimetallic alloy. The as-prepared nanoflowers can serve as a promising electrocatalyst in fuel cells.

Designing a stable, efficient, highly selective, and low-cost dehydrogenation catalyst, using formic acid to produce hydrogen energy, is challenging even today. This paper reports a facile preparation method of constructing Pd–Co alloy-composite catalyst for hydrogen production using formic acid by heterogeneous catalyst decomposition. The results demonstrate that introducing a nonprecious cobalt metal could significantly reduce precious palladium metal usage. Moreover, the particle size reduces from 13.50 nm (without Co) to 3.4 nm (with Co). More importantly, the Pd 2+ amount in the catalyst affect the catalytic decomposition of formic acid to produce hydrogen. Additionally, Pd 0.9 Co 0.1 /C 650 exhibits excellent catalytic activity and cyclic catalytic stability and it is one of the best non-precious metal doped Pd-based catalysts. The development of a synthetic method with the addition of nonprecious metal in this paper opens up a new avenue for cheap and efficient catalysts for application scenarios of hydrogen production. Electrolytic water splitting is a promising strategy to generate clean hydrogen energy but still restricted by the sluggish kinetics during the anodic oxygen evolution reaction (OER). A highly efficient route to significantly reduce the cell voltage of electrolytic water splitting is to replace OER with hydrazine oxidation reaction (HzOR) so as to assist hydrogen generation effectively. Here, we report the fabrication of carbon nanofibers (CNFs) embedded with palladium cobalt (PdCo) alloy nanoparticles, via an electrospinning followed by a carbonization treatment. The as-synthesized PdCo-CNFs catalyst displays a superior electrocatalytic activity toward HzOR with a working potential of 258 mV (vs. RHE) to drive a current density of 50 mA cm −2 in an alkaline solution with 0.2 M hydrazine. Furthermore, the favorable hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) activity of this catalyst enables it highly efficient electrolytic hydrogen production, and the two-electrode system using PdCo-CNFs as both the cathode and anode for overall hydrazine splitting is capable of delivering a cell voltage of 0.440 V to attain 10 mA cm −2 , which is 1.496 V less than that for pure water splitting using the same electrodes and even 0.459 V less than the overall hydrazine splitting device using Pt/C//RuO 2 as electrocatalysts. This work provides a reliable way for the fabrication of promising bifunctional electrocatalysts to promote energy-saving hydrogen production for practical applications.

Water splitting is considered as one of the recommendable techniques to realize clear and renewable hydrogen production. However, it suffers from lacking efficient and sustainable catalysts. Herein, a metal–organic framework/graphene oxide pyrolysis strategy was proposed to prepare nitrogen-doped porous carbon-stabilized alloys supported on reduced graphene oxide (PdCo@N–C/rGO) composite. When evaluated as an electrocatalyst for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), the as-obtained PdCo@N–C/rGO shows an excellent performance in acidic media including positive onset potential close to that of commercial Pt/C ( vs . SCE), low overpotential and Tafel slope, as well as long-term durability. Also, it delivers outstanding HER activities in alkaline and neutral conditions. The excellent performance could be mainly ascribed to their synergetic effect among alloy particles, nitrogen-doped porous carbon shell, and conductive rGO substrate. Graphical abstract

Exploring advanced electrocatalysts to accelerate the sluggish methanol oxidation reaction (MOR) in the anode of direct methanol fuel cells is a promising route to alleviate the current challenges of fossil fuel exhaustion and environmental pollution. Herein, we develop capping-free PdCo alloys with a coral-like structure and use them as potential electrocatalysts to promote the MOR in alkaline media. A facile microwave-assisted wet chemical approach was established to prepare the unique PdCo architectures, in which no capping agent was employed. Through regulating the precursor ([PdCl4]2− and Co2+) proportion, the ratio of bimetals could be expediently tailored. HRTEM, SAED, XRD and XPS verified the formation of PdCo alloys with different Co abundances on surface. It was found that, together with morphology and crystallinity, the electrocatalytic activities of PdCo materials toward methanol oxidation were highly dependent on their compositions. Among synthesized PdCo structures, the best Pd56Co44 with a moderate Co enrichment on the alloy surface exhibited a mass activity dramatically 11.4 times higher than the pure Pd counterpart. This impressive activity of Pd56Co44 synergistically originated from the bifunctional effects and the electronic interactions between Pd and Co. In addition, the good performance durability of bimetallic PdCo was also demonstrated.

Nanomaterial-based artificial enzyme mimetics have attracted increasing attention because of their robust stability, adjustable activity, and cost-effectiveness. In this study, we developed a simple and effective method for the synthesis of highly dispersed ultrafine PdCo alloys with peroxidase- and catalase-like activities. The aberration-corrected transmission electron microscopy analysis verified that the cyanogel precursor in the mesoporous silica nanospheres (MSNs) was converted to PdCo alloy in NH3 at a high temperature. The PdCo alloy was homogenously distributed in MSNs as ultrafine and monodispersed particles. By selectively removing the Co species from the binary alloy through an acid-leaching approach, the role of each component in the enzyme-like mimetics was systematically studied. Using glutathione (GSH) as the model analyte, the potential application of PdCo@MSNs in GSH detection from complex cell media was confirmed via colorimetric assay. The ultrafine alloy size, double mimetic activities, and abundant loading space of PdCo@MSNs make them promising not only in clinical diagnosis but also in overcoming hypoxia-induced photodynamic therapy resistance in tumor treatment.
