MXene-supported Co3Ti and single-atom Co catalyst activated PMS for efficient removal of Pb-EDTA: The involvement of Co (Ⅳ)

Haoran Song,Longyu Chen,Yi hang Xu,Chen Li,Xuewei Hu,Yingjie Li,Shugen Liu,Jianhong Huang,Qun Zhao,Jie Li,Senlin Tian

Activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) by MXene-supported Co 3 Ti and single-atom Co catalyst (Co@MXene) achieved the efficient decomplexation of lead-ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (Pb-EDTA) and the recovery of lead (Pb) over the pH range of 3.0–9.0. The removal efficiency of Pb-EDTA reached up to 93.6 % within 30 min and total Pb was completely removed within 15 min. The coordination structure differences between Co 3 Ti and single-atom Co induced their various electron transfer pathways with PMS, in which Co 3 Ti brought key effect to the generation of Co (Ⅳ), while single-atom Co and regenerative Co (II) were responsible for the generation of HO and SO 4 − and 1 O 2 , More importantly, the oxygen transfer reaction from O-Co 3 Ti to Co 3 Ti-O and the reducibility of MXene triggered the regeneration of low-valent Co. This study proposed a novel mechanism of Co (Ⅳ) generation and low-valent Co regeneration, which improved the understanding of the electron transfer pathways of Co@MXene/PMS oxidation process.

Synthesis of Acetonitrile from Ethanol Dehydroamination over a La-Modified Co/Al2O3 Catalyst

Lin Mei,Chao Feng,Yuzhong Wang,Qiang Yu,Wenjie Xin,Weifeng Chu,Yanan Wang,Xiangxue Zhu,Shenglin Liu,Hongxia Wang,Longya Xu

Synthesis of acetonitrile (ACN) by way of ethanol dehydroamination process was performed over copper-, zinc-, nickel-, and cobalt-based catalysts in a fixed-bed reactor, by which 20Co/Al2O3 was found to be the best one and ready for subsequent La, Ce, and Pr doping. Then, catalytic tests and a series of characterizations such as XRD, XRF, XPS, TEM, TG-DTA, IGA, NH3-TPD, and N2 adsorption–desorption were carried out. The results demonstrate that rare-earth-modified 20Co/Al2O3 catalysts have improved the catalytic performance for ethanol dehydroamination remarkably; the addition of La leads to better dispersion of cobalt species, the higher surface area of 20Co/Al2O3 catalyst, and fast adsorption for ACN, as well as better resistance to carbon deposition. In the meantime, the La-doped catalyst seems to prefer the route of acetaldehyde imine to ACN rather than to ethylamine, and consequently, a highly selective synthesis of ACN with excellent catalytic stability was obtained with the formation of ethylamine being suppressed..

Hydrogenation of glucose to sorbitol catalyzed by Co supported on coconut-shell active carbon

Yanqiu Liu,Mengtian Wang,Jingbo Mao,Hui Lv,Jinxia Zhou

It is of significant importance to develop cost-effective transition metal catalysts for the hydrogenation of glucose to sorbitol. While Ni-based catalysts have been frequently reported, investigations involving Co-based catalysts in this reaction remain relatively limited. Here, a Co catalyst supported on a coconut-shell activated carbon (AC) was prepared and utilized for the first time to produce sorbitol from glucose via aqueous hydrogenation. Characterization results revealed that the Co components were highly dispersed on the AC surface, forming CoO–Co polyvalent complexes incorporating oxygen vacancies and Lewis acids after calcination in N2 at 500 °C. In contrast, Ni species on the AC surface tend to aggregate into metallic Ni particles. Compared with Ni/AC, the Co/AC catalyst not only demonstrates a superior ability to generate more active H with multiple forms, but also possesses various strengths of Lewis acid sites to activate the CO bond of glucose. Consequently, the Co/AC catalyst exhibited higher activity with 100% selectivity towards sorbitol in the aqueous hydrogenation of glucose under mild conditions of 100 °C and 3 MPa H2 pressure, showcasing significant potential for the formation of sorbitol from biomass-derived glucose due to its low cost, simple preparation process, and excellent performance in hydrogenation.

Enhanced catalytic transfer hydrogenation of biomass-based furfural into furfuryl alcohol over Co3O4-based mixed oxide catalysts from hydrotalcite

Shifang Cheng,Junfang Ding,Yakai Chen,Ganen Pan,Xinya Feng,Xingliang Xu,Jing Xu

Catalytic furfural (FF) into high value-added furfuryl alcohol (FOL) is a very important biomass improvement process and remains a challenging task. Herein, a series of Co-based composite oxide (CoMgAl-LDO) catalysts with highly dispersed Co 3 O 4 -based spinel oxide nanoparticles were synthesized by the topological transformation of Co-based ternary layered hydroxides (CoMgAl-LDH) under calcination conditions and tested for catalytic transfer hydrogenation of FF to FOL using isopropanol (2-PrOH) as hydrogen donor. The CoMgAl-LDO, especially Co 1.5 Mg 1.5 Al 1 -LDO calcinated at 500 °C (Co 1.5 Mg 1.5 Al 1 -LDO-500) offered the outstanding catalytic performance for the catalytic transfer hydrogenation of FF to FOL (99.7 % FF conversion and 95.9 % FOL selectivity), which was attributed to effectively dispersed active sites, abundant acid-base sites and mesoporous structure. Additionally, the Co 1.5 Mg 1.5 Al 1 -LDO-500 catalyst manifested good stability with wider universality to other carbonyl compounds, making the catalytic system extremely economical and practical in various biomass hydrogenation processes.

An Efficient and Stable MXene-Immobilized, Cobalt-Based Catalyst for Hydrogen Evolution Reaction

Wei Guo,Buxiang Wang,Qing Shu

Hydrogen (H2) is considered to be the best carbon-free energy carrier that can replace fossil fuels because of its high energy density and the advantages of not producing greenhouse gases and air pollutants. As a green and sustainable method for hydrogen production, the electrochemical hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) has received widespread attention. Currently, it is a great challenge to prepare economically stable electrocatalysts for the HER using non-precious metals. In this study, a Co/Co3O4/Ti3C2Txcatalyst was synthesized by supporting Co/Co3O4with Ti3C2Tx. The results show that Co/Co3O4/Ti3C2Txhas excellent HER activity and durability in 1 mol L−1KOH, and the overpotential and Tafel slope at 10 mA·cm−2were 87 mV and 61.90 mV dec−1, respectively. The excellent HER activity and stability of Co/Co3O4/Ti3C2Txcan be explained as follows: Ti3C2Txprovides a stable skeleton and a large number of attachment sites for Co/Co3O4, thus exposing more active sites; the unique two-dimensional structure of Ti3C2Txprovides an efficient conductive network for rapid electron transfer between the electrolyte and the catalyst during electrocatalysis; Co3O4makes the Co/Co3O4/Ti3C2Txcatalyst more hydrophilic, which can accelerate the release rate of bubbles; Co/Co3O4can accelerate the adsorption and deionization of H2O to synthesize H2. This study provides a new approach for the design and preparation of low-cost and high-performance HER catalysts.

Insight into the Influence of Carbon on Core–Shell Structured Co-Z@TiO2 Catalysts for Fischer–Tropsch Synthesis

Jinzhao Liu,Xinyu Chen,Hu Wang,Yun Chen,Liuliu Zhong,Chundong Zhang,Lei Wang,Hui Wan,Guofeng Guan

ZIF-67 derived cobalt-based catalysts have potential for Fischer–Tropsch synthesis (FTS). In this work, core–shell structured Co-Z@TiO2 catalysts with different graphitization degrees and carbon contents were handily prepared by adjusting the calcination process, using the ZIF-67 encapsulated by amorphous TiO2 as the precursor. By the protection effect of the residual carbon, the aggregation of cobalt species was suppressed. The dispersion and reducibility of the catalyst can be regulated by manipulating the type and amount of residual carbon. The Co-Z@TiO2 catalyst with proper carbon content exhibited high CO conversion (36.9%), C5+ selectivity (80.4%), and especially gasoline range hydrocarbons (49.3%). The catalyst also showed good stability during a 110 h reaction.

Highly efficient Cr-doped cobalt-based catalyst for hydrogen evolution

Fengxin Cao,Qiaoling Li,Boya Shan,Zhiwei Qi,Chenyu Zhang,Chengcheng Yu

To create an economical, stable, along highly efficient catalyst for the hydrogen evolution reaction, this paper reports on a Cr-doped self-supported Co-P-Cr/NF high-performance HER catalyst synthesized in one step. It exhibits overpotentials of 41.44 mV at −10 mA cm −2 . Moreover, the impedance is only 0.56 Ω, and the double-layer capacitance value is 40.02 mF cm −2 . After a 12-hour stability test, the catalyst shows only minimal overpotential increase. Using techniques including XRD, XPS, SEM, and TEM, the structure of the electrocatalyst was thoroughly investigated. The introduction of Cr and the excellent electronegativity of P enhance the redox capability and show superior intrinsic electrocatalytic ability in Co-P-Cr/NF catalysts. Therefore, the Co-P-Cr/NF catalyst that has been developed shows promise in replacing costly Pt-based electrocatalysts in the HER.

Nitrogen species from Spirulina platensis derived bio-oil enhance catalytic activity of cobalt catalysts for hydrogenation

Mengjiao Fan,Xueming Gao,Yuewen Shao,Kai Sun,Yuchen Jiang,Shu Zhang,Yi Wang,Song Hu,Jun Xiang,Xun Hu

High nitrogen content in Spirulina platensis -derived bio-oil is a highly undesirable feature in upgrading of bio-oil to biofuel via hydrodeoxygenation . However, the nitrogen species could be potentially used as dopant for tailoring the catalytic behaviors of metallic sites in heterogeneous catalysts . In this study, the nitrogen species in the bio-oil from hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) of Spirulina platensis was used to modify Co-based catalyst for enhancing their catalytic activity for hydrogenation of o -chloronitrobenzene ( o -CNB). The results showed that the introduction of N species not only promoted dispersion of Co particles via formation of Co–N sites, but also generated extra pores and significantly increased H 2 uptake. The abundant Co–N sites, high dispersion of Co and higher surface area of N-doped catalyst (CoFeAl–N) jointly contributed to the enhanced catalytic activity for hydrogenation of o -CNB, achieving the yield of 90.3% for o -chloroaniline ( o -CA) and lowering the activation energy from 63.0 kJ mol −1 (with N-free CoFeAl catalyst) to 55.1 kJ mol −1 . The effectiveness of introducing nitrogen for enhancing catalytic activity for hydrogenation of o -CNB was also confirmed in the experiments for doping Co/Al 2 O 3 (prepared via impregnation) and CoAl (prepared via co-precipitation) catalysts with the Spirulina platensis derived bio-oil.

Enhancing the Kinetics of Glucose Electro-Oxidation by Modulating the Binding Energy of Hydroxyl on Cobalt-Based Catalysts

Fei Lu,Bin Zhang,Lifeng Shen,Anjie Chen,Yuhe Chen,Yuxue Zhou,Xiuyun Zhang,Bitao Liu,Min Zhou

Replacing the sluggish anodic water oxidation reaction with the glucose oxidation reaction (GOR) offers an energy-saving strategy to obtain value-added products during the hydrogen production process. However, rational design of the GOR electrocatalyst with an explicit structure–property relationship remains a challenge. In this study, by using cobalt chalcogenides as model catalysts, we performed an in-depth study of the GOR catalytic mechanism of CoS and CoSe nanosheets. Experimental and theoretical results revealed that the reaction pathway on cobalt chalcogenides strongly depends on their binding energy to hydroxyl (OHBE). For CoS with a weak OHBE, the reaction proceeds through an “electrophilic oxygen” route. While for CoSe, due to the strong OHBE, a surface reconstruction occurs before the GOR and therefore follows the “electrochemical-chemical” route. Inspired by these findings, a customized strategy was proposed to regulate the OHBE of the catalysts, which involved introducing F atoms into CoS to enhance its OHBE, and weakening the OHBE of CoSe by doping with Zn atoms. The optimized F-doped CoS and Zn-doped CoSe catalysts both exhibited significantly improved performance for GOR. This study thus provides a verifiable paradigm for improving the GOR performance via a customized strategy and sheds light on the design of novel catalysts in the future.

Enhanced Catalytic Soot Oxidation over Co-Based Metal Oxides: Effects of Transition Metal Doping

Jianbin Luo,Xinbo Zhu,Zhiwei Zhong,Geng Chen,Yu Hong,Zijian Zhou

A series of Co-M (M = Fe, Cr, and Mn) catalysts were synthesized by the sol-gel method for soot oxidation in a loose contact mode. The Co-Fe catalyst exhibited the best catalytic activity among the tested samples, with the characteristic temperatures (T10, T50, and T90) of 470 °C, 557 °C, and 602 °C, respectively, which were 57 °C, 51 °C, and 51 °C lower than those of the CoOxcatalyst. Catalyst characterizations of N2adsorption–desorption, X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photo-electron spectrometry (XPS), and the temperature programmed desorption of O2(O2-TPD) were performed to gain insights into the relationships between the activity of catalytic soot oxidation and the catalyst properties. The content of Co2+(68.6%) increased due to the interactions between Co and Fe, while the redox properties and the relative concentration of surface oxygen adsorption (51.7%) were all improved, which could significantly boost the activity of catalytic soot oxidation. The effects of NO and contact mode on soot oxidation were investigated over the Co-Fe catalyst. The addition of 1000 ppm of NO led to significant reductions in T10, T50, and T90by 92 °C, 106 °C, and 104 °C, respectively, compared to the case without the NO addition. In the tight contact mode, the soot oxidation was accelerated over the Co-Fe catalyst, resulting in 46 °C, 50 °C, and 50 °C reductions in T10, T50, and T90compared to the loose contact mode. The comparison between real soot and model Printex-U showed that the T50value of real soot (455 °C) was 102 °C lower than the model Printex-U soot. Keywords:soot oxidation;Co-based catalyst;NO;real soot;contact mode

Manipulating the Surface Oxygen Vacancies of the Nanosized ZrO2 Carrier for Co-Catalyzed Fischer–Tropsch Synthesis

Miao Jin,Bing Xu,Jun Ma,Chengcheng Yi,Yuefeng Liu

Fischer–Tropsch synthesis is a typical reaction for converting synthesis gas (i.e., CO and H2 mixture) to clean fuels, by coupling different processes, which can produce products such as engine fuels and other high value-added chemicals. However, searching for a suitable catalyst is still challenging due to its chemical structure-sensitive properties, which greatly affect the interaction with active components, thereby altering the reaction activity or product selectivity. In this work, the nanosized ZrO2 with different oxygen vacancy concentrations was synthesized by using UiO-66 as a precursor and applied for supporting cobalt nanoparticles. The results showed that treatment of nanosized ZrO2 carrier with diluted nitric acid at an appropriate temperature could effectively modulate its surface oxygen vacancy and subsequently alter the FTS activity. The optimized Co/C-ZrO2-80 catalyst with a high concentration of oxygen vacancy displayed a CO conversion of 44.2% and a cobalt time yield (CoTY) of 20.9 × 10–5 molCO gCo–1 s–1 at 220 °C, which shows a 2.9-fold increase in CoTY compared with the conventional ZrO2-supported catalyst. Multiple characterizations and comparative experiments indicated that oxygen vacancies on the surface of ZrO2 enhanced the electron transfer and the interaction between Zr and Co species. Zr-OV-Co interface sites promoted the adsorption and dissociation of CO and H2 molecules. This work provides a new perspective for studying the effect of oxygen vacancies on the structure and reactivity of cobalt-based FTS catalysts.

Production of acetonitrile via catalytic fast pyrolysis of biomass derived polylactic acid under ammonia atmosphere

Ziguo Yuan,Xin Zhang,Qian Yao,Ying Zhang,Yao Fu

In this study, a series of catalysts including different metal oxides loading on HZSM-5(Si/Al = 25) and cobalt oxides loading on different supports were synthesized to catalyze fast pyrolysis (CFP) of biomass derived polylactic acid (PLA) to produce acetonitrile under ammonia atmosphere. Both the metal and the acid of the catalyst had a crucial influence on the yield of acetonitrile and Co/HZSM-5(25) produced most acetonitrile. Other factors that might affect the product distribution including cobalt loading, reaction temperature, resident time and NH 3 flow rate have been investigated systematically. Under the optimized CFP condition (650 ℃; resident time 2.4 s; NH 3 flow rate 80 ml/min), the carbon yield and selectivity of acetonitrile in liquid product reached 50.2% and 83.6%, respectively. The possible reaction pathway from PLA to acetonitrile was also studied and proposed. PLA firstly cracked into lactic acid through thermal decomposition and formed lactide at the same time. Then lactic acid and lactide cracked into low-molecular aldehydes, ketones and acids. These aldehydes and ketones reacted with ammonia to form imines, acids to amides, and finally to acetonitrile and small amount of proponitrile under the catalysis of Co/HZSM-5 catalyst.
