Conventional phosphonic acid extractants such as bis (2-ethylhexyl) phosphate (P204) have only been used for cobalt extraction and perform poor separation efficiency. In this work, we propose a route to synergistically extract and separate Co, Mo, and V from spent hydrogenation catalysts by utilizing the modulating effect of ethanolamine (MEA) on phosphonic acid-based extractants, which eliminates the need for saponification and acidification of the extractants. The extraction mechanism of V, Co and Mo have been explained detailedly. By performing quantum chemical calculations on the surface properties of various amines, their metal extraction effects were predicted and validated using machine learning, laying the foundation for the design of synergistic extractants. The Co/Mo/V selective separation process was finally built with the aim of extracting cobalt first in the form of Co(RNH 2 ) 2 A 2 . At a P204 concentration of 25 %, MEA addition of 5 %, stirring time of 10 min, stirring rate of 400 rpm, the combined recoveries of the three metals Co, V and Mo reached 94.56 %, 85.60 % and 88.81 %, the separation factors β Co/Mo and β Co/V could be increased up to 44748.77 and 1174.04, respectively. It was also demonstrated that the extractant was also suitable for the selective extraction of Ni 2+ . This work provided fundamental research for the development of high-performance extraction systems.

The escalating demand for cobalt in modern industry necessitates the recycling or extraction of this resource for sustainable development. Despite the abundance of lignin in nature, its utilization remains low, highlighting the need to enhance its value-added potential. This study focuses on the synthesis of quaternary ammonium lignin (QAL) and 2-ethylhexyl phosphoric acid mono-2-ethylhexyl ester (P507) as ionic liquid (QP–IL) compounds for the extraction of metal ions. A comparison of the extraction behavior of Co(II) and Ni(II) from chloride solution between QP–IL and P507 revealed varying extraction ratios under different conditions, with QP–IL demonstrating a higher cobalt extractability than P507. Furthermore, under identical conditions, QP–IL exhibited superior Co/Ni separation performance (βCo/Ni) compared to P507. Ultimately, QP–IL proved to be more effective than P507 in separating cobalt from mixed solutions.

Graphical Battery recycling : A deep eutectic solvent based on lactic acid and guanidine hydrochloride is proposed for the extraction of cobalt and lithium from lithium-ion battery cathodes, and high solubility is achieved at low temperatures. The process avoids the use of toxic reagents and is more efficient and environmentally benign. The leaching and recycling of valuable metals via environmentally benign solvents is important because of the ever-increasing waste lithium-ion batteries, but it remains a challenge. Herein, a multi-functional deep eutectic solvent (DES) based on lactic acid (LA) and guanidine hydrochloride (GHC) was used to extract cobalt and lithium ions from LiCoO 2 . Due to the strong acidity (protons) and abundant chlorine coordinating ions of LA/GHC, the solubility of LiCoO 2 in LA/GHC could reach as high as 19.9 mg g −1 (stirred at 80 °C for 24 h), and a little LiCoO 2 powder even could be dissolved at room temperature without stirring. Oxalic acid was used to strip and separate the oxalates of cobalt and lithium. Furthermore, LA/GHC could be recycled with a similar dissolving performance. This work avoided using corrosive acids and could be realized at low temperature (80 °C), making it energy-saving and cost-effective. It shows DESs have great potential in extracting strategically important metals from LiCoO 2 cathodes and provides an efficient and green alternative for sustainable recycling of spent lithium-ion batteries.

Deep eutectic solvents (DESs), as a green alternative technology, exhibit great potential to recycle valuable elements from spent lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). However, due to the weak reducing power of DESs, raising the temperature and extending the duration of processing are not efficient for screening suitable DESs for the recycling of LIBs. Here, we propose a novel, simple and robust experimental method to identify suitable DESs for recycling spent LIBs. Based on electrochemical principles, the method proposed in this study can be used to quickly determine the reducing power of DESs. As an example, a choline chloride (ChCl) and urea mixture as a DES was found to possess strong reducing power, with a Li and Co extraction efficiency of 95% from spent LIBs obtained at a reduced reaction temperature of 180 °C and reaction time of 12 h. The results are in good agreement with the results from Fukui functions calculations. The kinetic experiments revealed that the Li and Co extraction is controlled by solution and electron diffusion through the DES. Furthermore, a cubic cobalt oxide spinel (Co3O4) was obtained from the loaded DES using H2C2O4 and NaOH in the dilution–precipitation–calcination process. The current strategy demonstrates great potential for rapid and reliable screening of suitable DESs for the effective recycling of spent LIBs.
