Preparation of polyaniline-coated cobalt nitride nanoflowers as sulfur host for advanced lithium–sulfur battery

Jie Yang,Shanqing Li,Guozhi Wu,Jiawen Bao,Shuang Xu,Cuiping Gu,Jinjie Lv,Jiarui Huang,Sang Woo Joo

Lithium–sulfur (Li–S) batteries are promising candidates for large-scale high-energy-density devices owing to their potential high energy density , low cost, and more pronounced ecological compatibility. Nevertheless, their commercial applications of Li–S batteries are limited by the low electrical conductivity of sulfur, huge volume swell, shuttle effect, and slow redox reactions . In order to solve the above issues, various sulfur hosts have been developed and combined with active sulfur to form a composite. Polyaniline-coated cobalt nitride nanoflowers loaded with sulfur (CoN/S@PANI nanoflowers) were prepared by simple liquid phase precipitation followed by nitridation, sulfurization, and coating with polypyrrole . The CoN nanoflowers possessed a hierarchical nanostructure with a large specific surface area, which could reduce the volume swelling of sulfur and the shuttle effect of polysulfides . The polyaniline coating with high electrical conductivity can adsorb the polysulfides and promote the electrochemical reaction kinetics. Therefore, the CoN/S@PANI nanoflowers exhibit a high initial capacity of 895 mAh g −1 at 0.5 A g −1 , which was kept at 736 mAh g −1 over 100 cycles. This paper reports a new route to prepare a sulfur host for advanced lithium–sulfur batteries.

Recycling valuable cobalt from spent lithium ion batteries for controllably designing a novel sea-urchin-like cobalt nitride-graphene hybrid catalyst: Towards efficient overall water splitting

Tingting Liu,Sheng Cai,Genfu Zhao,Zhihui Gao,Shuming Liu,Huani Li,Lijuan Chen,Mian Li,Xiaofei Yang,Hong Guo

Along with the continuous consumption in lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), the price of cobalt is inevitably going up in recent years. Therefore, recycling valuable Co element from spent devices, and boosting its service efficiency are becoming two indispensable approaches to promote the utilization of Co in various energy conversion/storage devices. Herein, we realize the recovery of Co from spent LIBs and synthesize a three–dimensional (3D) sea-urchin-like cobalt nitride composite material (labeled as CoN-Gr-2), which is used as a bi-functional catalyst for water splitting. Benefiting from the intrinsic high conductivity, larger surface area and unique 3D sea–urchin–like architecture, CoN-Gr-2 shows an excellent electron transfer efficiency, highly exposed active sites as well as the superior mass transport capacity. The CoN-Gr-2 catalyst exhibits low overpotentials of 128.9 mV and 280 mV for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER), which are comparable to the commercial 20 wt% Pt/C and RuO 2 catalysts. Moreover, when adopting CoN-Gr-2 as both anode and cathode materials for overall water splitting (in 1.0 M KOH electrolyte), the assembled cell achieves a current density of 10 mA cm −2 at 1.61 V, which almost close to that of Pt/C||RuO 2 benchmark (1.60 V), demonstrating its superior water-splitting efficiency. Meanwhile, the CoN catalysts exhibit strong chemical interaction with the Gr support, suppressing the aggregation of CoN catalysts and maintains their high activity during HER and OER reactions. So, the cell exhibits a high current retention of 97.3% after 40 h. This work successfully develops an industrial chain from recycling Co wastes in spent energy devices to controllably designing 3D sea-urchin-like CoN-Gr with high water splitting efficiency. Therefore, it could further promote the efficient utilization of valuable Co element in various energy devices.

Recycling cobalt from spent lithium-ion batteries for designing the novel cobalt nitride followers: Towards efficient overall water splitting and advanced zinc-air batteries

Zhuang Wang,Mian Li,Bin Fu,Wenping Cao,Xiangjie Bo

Although cobalt nitride (CoN)-based nanomaterials have been widely designed as advanced oxygen evolution reaction (OER), hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), and oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalysts, the continuous consumption of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) has led to a high price of cobalt metal. Therefore, in the future, recycling valuable Co elements from spent devices and boosting their service efficiency will inevitably promote the utilization of Co-based materials in water splitting and zinc-air batteries (ZABs). Herein, we realize the Co recycling from spent LIBs by a simple hydrometallurgy method. Under the assistance of hexamethylenetetramine and polystyrene spheres, after the hydrothermal and pyrolysis treatment in the NH 3 atmosphere, the as-reclaimed cobalt oxalates were successfully transformed into novel three-dimensional (3D) CoN nanoflowers (denoted as CoN NFs). Benefiting from the unique 3D flower-like architectures, intrinsic high conductivity, large surface area, uniformly dispersed CoN nanoparticles, and the synergistic effect between Co 3 N and CoO phases, the 3D flower-like CoN NFs exhibited excellent OER catalytic activity. The performance was much better than commercial RuO 2 in the 1.0 M KOH solution. Furthermore, the CoN NFs-based water splitting cell needed a voltage of 1.608 V to achieve the current density of 10 mA cm −2 , which is even 16 mV smaller than that of Pt/C||RuO 2 benchmark (1.624 V). Meanwhile, the CoN NFs-derived ZAB exhibited a high peak power density of 107.3 mW cm −2 (vs. 103.2 mW cm −2 of Pt/C-RuO 2 -based ZAB) and a low charge–discharge voltage gap (0.93 V vs. 1.43 V of Pt/C-RuO 2 -based ZAB). Due to the excellent structural and elemental stabilities, the corresponding water splitting cell and ZAB had outstanding durability. This work successfully explored an advanced industrial chain from recycling Co metal in spent devices to designing the high-efficiency HER/OER/ORR electrocatalysts for advanced water splitting devices and ZABs. This will further promote the value-added utilization of valuable Co metal in various energy storage or conversion devices.

NiCo2N hollow sphere with interconnected nanosheets shell: A potential anode material for high performance lithium-ion batteries

Peiyao Wang,Jin Bai,Kunzhen Li,Hongyang Ma,Wanyun Li,Xuebin Zhu,Yuping Sun,Bangchuan Zhao

Transition metal nitrides are of great interest for lithium storage application due to their high electrical conductivity and low voltage plateau. However, the relative cycling stability restricts their practical application. Herein, a stable bimetal nitride NiCo 2 N hollow sphere material with interconnected nanosheets shell was successfully synthesized via a facial solvothermal route. When used as anodes for lithium-ion batteries, the unique structure can effectively relieve the volume change of the electrode material , and shorten the diffusion distance of lithium ions during the repeated cycling processes. As a result, the NiCo 2 N electrode exhibits an excellent electrochemical performance. It delivers high discharge capacity of 1244.5 mAh g −1 at a current density of 1 A g −1 after 400 cycles, the capacity can maintain 529.4 mAh g −1 at high current density of 5 A g −1 . Furthermore, the electrochemical reaction mechanism of the electrodes is revealed by ex situ XRD, ex situ EIS, and ex situ HRTEM characterization.

Rational Design of Porous Nanowall Arrays of Ultrafine Co4N Nanoparticles Confined in a La2O2CN2 Matrix on Carbon Cloth for a High-Performing Supercapacitor Electrode

Bo Cao,Baocang Liu,Zichao Xi,Yan Cheng,Xuan Xu,Peng Jing,Rui Cheng,Shien-Ping Feng,Jun Zhang

Transition metal nitrides (TMNs) have received special concern as important energy storage materials, owing to their high conductibility, good mechanical strength, and superior corrosion resistance. However, their insufficient capacitance and poor cycling stability limit their practical applications for supercapacitors. Here, a novel three-dimensional (3D) self-supported integrated electrode consisted of porous nanowall arrays of ultrafine cobalt nitride (Co4N) nanoparticles encapsulated in a lanthanum oxycyanamide (LOC) matrix on carbon cloth (Co4N@LOC/CC) for outstanding electrochemical energy storage is rationally designed and fabricated. The 3D monolithic configuration of porous nanowall arrays facilitates the mass/charge transfer, the exposure of electroactive sites, and the enhancement of electrical conductivity. Meanwhile, the unique core–shell structure of Co4N@LOC can prevent ultrafine Co4N nanoparticles from sintering, agglomeration, and oxidation and promotes electron transfer dynamics during the redox reaction, meanwhile enhancing the stability of the electrode. Additionally, the synergy of Co4N and LOC can result in an efficient electron/ion transport in the process of the charge–discharge. Because of these features, the Co4N@LOC/CC electrode displays superior specific capacitance (895.6 mF cm–2 or 613.4 F g–1 at 1 mA cm–2) and admirable cycling durability (87.9% capacitance reservation after 10 000 cycles), surpassing the majority of nitride-based electrodes reported thus far. Furthermore, after being assembled into an asymmetric supercapacitor using active carbon (AC) as an anode, the obtained Co4N@LOC/CC//AC/CC device displays a high energy density of 41.7 Wh kg–1 at the power density of 875.8 W kg–1 with a high capacitance reservation of 87.6% after 5000 cycles at 2 mA cm–2. This work offers an efficient approach of combining TMNs with rare earth compounds to enhance the capacitance and stability of TMNs for supercapacitor electrodes.

MnS doping regulating Co active sites on fibrous cobalt nitride as bifunctional oxygen electrocatalyst for high-performance Zn-air battery

Xinmeng Yu,Xiaorong Chen,Dandan Yue,Fenghua Zheng,Qingyu Li,Zhaoling Ma,Hongqiang Wang

Aiming to achieve high-efficiency bifunctional catalysts, doping engineering is applied to construct bifunctional catalysts for oxygen electrodes in Zn-air batteries to strengthen the catalytic kinetics of oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Herein, MnS doped cobalt nitride catalyst (MnS/CoN x ) with divergent fiber morphology is prepared by low temperature nitriding for the self-assembling layered double hydroxides (LDH). The MnS/CoN x shows excellent electrical conductivity and improved catalytic activity on ORR and OER with low overpotential of 290 mV at 10 mA cm −2 and a good half-wave potential of 0.80 V in ORR compared with CoNx and MnO/CoN x . The contribution of the increased bifunctional catalytic performance is possible from the more active center Co 3+ and Mn 4+ , and the elevated electron transport resulted from the opportune high conductive MnS doping. The MnS/CoN x catalyst-driven Zn-air battery achieves a higher power density of 228 mW cm −2 and the excellent long-term stability of 500 h at 20 mA cm −2 far surpassing the commercial Pt/C+RuO 2 catalyst.

Preparation of V doped Co2N/CoN and its superior HER and OER performance

Yan Lu,Weilin Weng,Yuanhang Lu,Xinxin Pang,Naixuan Hu,Banghua Peng

Hydrogen is increasingly recognized as a critical energy source for the future. Transition metal nitrides hydrogen catalysts have found to narrow the d-band contraction effectively and alter the filling state of the metal, thereby modulating the metal-hydrogen bonding energy and enhancing both electrical conductivity and catalytic activity. In this study, V-doped cobalt nitrides (V–Co 2 N/CoN) with two distinct crystalline structures were successfully synthesized through the nitriding of V-doped cobalt bicarbonate (V–CoCH) as a precursor. The morphology and structure of the resulting materials were carefully optimized by adjusting the V doping amount and nitriding temperature. For hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER), the final product V–Co 2 N/CoN-1-400 only needs 47 mV and 230 mV overpotential to reach 10 mA cm −2 , and works at 1.69 V to drive the overall water splitting for 10 mA cm −2 , showing good stability performance without fluctuation for about 10 h. This work implies that V-doped cobalt nitrides can lead to enhanced water splitting catalytic activity. Our findings may illustrate the significance of V doping for improving electrocatalytic performance, and demonstrate the potential of CoV bimetallic nitrides as effective electrocatalysts , offering valuable insights for the further development of non-precious metal nitride-based catalysts.

Functionless cobalt toward functional cobalt nitride: Catalytic sulfur carrier for lithium-sulfur pouch batteries

Tao Wang,Qin Dong,Fangzheng Wang,Rui Xu,Cheng Tong,Die Su,Minhua Shao,Cunpu Li,Zidong Wei

SUMMARY Sulfur cathodes can be paired with lithium metal anodes to construct lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries. However, the dissolution of high-order lithium polysulfides (Li2Sn, 4%n%8) and the poor conductivity of sulfur cathodes must be addressed before they can be successfully commercialized. In this paper, we report a metal-organic framework (MOF)- derived composite, Co4N&CoNx@Ti3C2, as a catalytic sulfur carrier to moderate the interconversion of S species to achieve a high-performance Li-S battery. Heavy and functionless metallic Co particles derived from MOF pyrolysis were converted to functional Co4N to construct porous catalytic sites. Electrons can be rapidly transported through the electronic conductor Ti3C2 substrate. The mechanism of the Co4N&CoNx to catalyze the interconversion reaction of polysulfides was both quantitatively and qualitatively revealed from a molecular orbital vision. The prepared Co4N&CoNx@Ti3C2 cathode battery can generate a high reversible capacity of 978.2 mAh g1 at 2C and demonstrates excellent stability. The assembled Co4N&CoNx@Ti3C2/S electrode Li-S pouch battery can deliver up to 396 Wh kg1 actual energy density and can stably function for more than 250 cycles.

Bifunctional oxygen electrodes of homogeneous Co4N nanocrystals@N-doped carbon hybrids for rechargeable Zn-air batteries

Lulu Chen,Yelong Zhang,Xiangjian Liu,Ling Long,Siyu Wang,Xiaolong Xu,Minchao Liu,Wenxiu Yang,Jianbo Jia

The development of transition metal nitrides/carbon hybrids with well-organized morphology, outstanding efficiency and durability for Zn-air batteries are of great urgency. Herein, a morphology-controlled strategy to efficiently fabricate uniform Co 4 N nanoparticles anchored on N -doped carbon (Co 4 N@NC-m) is reported. The diameters and distribution of Co 4 N nanocrystals can be tuned to be homogeneous profited by abundant N sources in melamine. Moreover, thanks to the advantages of higher nitrogen doping content, better electrical conductivity , higher degree of graphitization , and larger electrochemical surface area, Co 4 N@NC-m possesses excellent oxygen reduction reaction (half-wave potential of 0.87 V) and oxygen evolution reaction (overpotential of 398 mV at 10 mA cm −2 ) activities in basic solution. The Zn-air battery fabricated with Co 4 N@NC-m owns higher open circuit voltage (1.490 V), larger power density, and better rechargeability than those of the commercial IrO 2  + 20% Pt/C catalysts, which proves the potential application in practical energy conversion devices.

PtCoN supported on TiN-modified carbon nanotubes (PtCoN/TiN–CNT) as efficient oxygen reduction reaction catalysts in acidic medium

Shengzhou Chen,Qiuchan Huang,Wei Yang,Hanbo Zou,Huangwang Mai,JiaHai Wang

Herein, new catalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) (Pt CoN nanoparticles supported on TiN–carbon nanotubes (CNTs)) were successfully prepared via the simple polymerized complex method and heat treatment in NH 3 . Through this facile two-step synthesis, metal chlorides were first transformed to the corresponding oxides, then reduced to metal particles or nitrides . The synthesized Pt CoN/TiN–CNT electrocatalysts showed excellent electrochemical activity for oxygen reduction and high tolerance against methanol in acidic medium. The ORR onset potential of Pt 0.3 CoN/TiN–CNT (0.812 V vs. RHE) is higher than that of 40 wt% commercial Pt/C (0.789 V vs. RHE) due to the synergistic effect between nano-platinum particles and metal nitrides. The TiN-coated CNT support provided high electron transfer rate and catalytic tolerance in methanol solution. The number of transferred electrons was examined by rotating ring-disk electrode measurements, which concurred with the result of the Koutecky–Levich equation for a four-electron mechanism.

Controllable fabrication of N-doped carbon nanotubes coated Co4N nanoparticles to boost hydrogen evolution reaction

Yu Wang,Yanling Wang,Yunmei Du,Yanru Liu,Volodymyr Turkevych,Lei Wang

Transition metal nitrides (TMNs) have attracted great attention as ideal active materials in the field of electrocatalysts in recent years due to their excellent electrical conductivity, wide band gap and adjustable morphology. Pure phase Co 4 N nanoparticles encapsulated nitrogen-doped carbon (NC) nanotubes (Co 4 N@NC) were in-situ synthesized by one-pot method. In this paper, the morphology of carbon nanotubes is controlled by adjusting the pyrolysis time, so that more active sites are exposed on carbon nanotubes. Thus, the cobalt nitride catalyst with excellent catalytic performance for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in acidic electrolyte was obtained. In summary, due to the protection of mesoporous nitrogen-doped carbon to Co 4 N nanoparticles, large electrochemically active surface area, good conductivity and more exposed active sites, Co 4 N@NC possesses excellent HER performance in acidic electrolytes. The overpotential of Co 4 N@NC at the current density of 10 mA cm −2 is 117 mV (η 10 ), and it shows long-term stability in 0.5 M H 2 SO 4 solution for 50 h. This study provides a strategy for the development of catalysts for the controllable synthesis of high-performance transition metal nitrides.

Boosting alkaline hydrogen evolution performance of Co4N porous nanowires by interface engineering of CeO2 tuning

Mengjie Lu,Duo Chen,Boran Wang,Ruiqing Li,Dong Cai,Haoran Tu,Hang Yang,Yupu Zhang,Wei Han

Developing high-efficiency non-precious electrocatalysts for alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is critical for practical application in water splitting. Abundant HER electrocatalysts exhibit high activity in acids, but deliver inferior performance in alkalis due to sluggish kinetics. Herein, motivated by the promoter CeO2 (rich in oxygen vacancies) that can modulate the electronic structure of materials, a high-efficiency catalyst of Co4N nanowires by coupling CeO2 vertically grown on Ni foam (Co4N–CeO2/NF) is prepared by composition control and interface engineering. Anchoring CeO2 into Co4N will endow the catalyst with superhydrophilic and superaerophobic properties, and simultaneously promote water adsorption/dissociation, which dramatically boost the alkaline HER performance. The as-synthesized self-supported Co4N–CeO2/NF electrode exhibits fairly low overpotentials of 52 and 149 mV at current densities of 10 and 100 mA cm−2 for HER in 1.0 M KOH electrolyte, respectively. Furthermore, after a long-time operation of 24 h at a fixed high current density of 100 mA cm−2, the required overpotential is increased only by 4 mV, showing the extraordinary long-time durability and promising potential in mass applications. This work will provide an effective strategy for rational design and activity enhancement of other non-precious metal-based HER electrocatalysts.
