Transition metal phosphide (TMP) emerges as a promising electrocatalyst for overall water splitting (OWS). However, conventional TMP materials require exogenous metal ions to participate in coordination reactions, which usually suffer from active site blocking, pronounced intrinsic impedance, and inevitable catalyst shedding at high current density. Herein, a novel in-situ construction strategy has been developed to grow N -doped carbon (NC) enwrapped Co/CoP nanosheets directly onto Co foam (abbreviated as CoF) through a three-step transformation of Co to Co(OH) 2 to Co-Metal-Organic Framework (Co-MOF) to Co/CoP/NC. In the entire preparation process, Co metal is only provided by the CoF substrate without external metal sources. Such in-situ construction yields tight contact at the interface of the heterogeneous catalyst, leading to much-reduced impedance and boundary vacancy, while the porous nitrogen-doped carbon backbone further endows the catalyst with the exposure of massive active sites, promotes mass transfer, and possesses high electrical conductivity. The Co/CoP/NC/CoF requires overpotentials of only 64 mV/263 mV@10 mA cm −2 and 414 mV/481 mV@400 mA cm −2 for both HER/OER in 1.0 M KOH, respectively. Remarkably, it reveals excellent OWS catalytic activity with a cell voltage of 1.56 V@10 mA cm −2 and 1.88 V@200 mA cm −2 . This strategy of in-situ interface engineering transformation provides new ideas for direct device processing and construction of highly-efficient transition-metal-based OWS electrode materials.

Developing user-friendly electrodes for efficiently producing hydrogen from water to substitute non-renewable fossil fuels is one of the challenges in the hydrogen energy field. For the first time, we have prepared self-supporting ultrahigh porosity cobalt foam loaded with NiCoP/NiOOH nanoflowers (NiCoP/CF) via freeze-drying and phosphorization. The as-prepared hierarchical NiCoP/CF electrodes showed superior catalytic activity for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in alkaline media. The one resulted from phosphorization at 350 °C (NiCoP/CF-350) only required overpotential of −47, and −126 mV to deliver geometrical current density of −10 mA cm −2 and −100 mA cm −2 , respectively, demonstrating improved catalytic activity than the electrodes prepared using a commercial nickel foam as a support. Moreover, it could retain its superior stability at a current density higher than −500 mA cm −2 for 16 h. Such an outstanding performance can be attributed to the ultrahigh porosity of Co foam support, optimal adsorption energies of HER intermediates (H∗), facile water dissociation on the NiCoP/NiOOH hetero-interfaces, and the assistance of NiOOH facilitating the electrons transfer from the Co foam inside to the NiCoP outside. The work would provide a new strategy for future design of advanced HER electrocatalysts.

Herein, a simple hydrothermal method was used to synthesize cobalt hydroxide/nickel sulfide and cobalt foam (Co(OH) 2 /NiS@CF) composite electrode. By simply heating cobalt foam in the aqueous solution containing cobalt nitrate, nickel nitrate, and thiourea, Co(OH) 2 /NiS nano stereoscopic website was synthesized on Cobalt foam. X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), and electrochemical tests were used to characterize these composite electrodes. When the molar ratio of Co(NO 3 ) 2 ·6H 2 O to Thiourea of 4:5, Co(OH) 2 /NiS@CF exhibits excellent performance under these tests. The specific capacitance was 1260 F/g at 1.0 A/g. The composite electrode had 92.3% capacitance retention after 2000 charge-discharge cycles at 1.0 A/g.

A monolithic complexed catalyst composed of a piece of Co foam decorated with Ru nanosheets has been fabricated. This catalyst has demonstrated excellent performance in catalyzing NaBH 4 hydrolysis under alkaline conditions. Most importantly, the bulky size of the developed catalyst provides convenience to control the start and stop of hydrogen production by manipulating the attachment and detachment between the catalyst and NaBH 4 solution. These features endow this catalyst with great potential for on-site hydrogen supply. Graphic Abstract

Development an alternative approach to efficiently and economically produce hydrogen from water to replace non-renewable fossil fuels is one of the great challenges in the energy field. In this paper, a Co foam (CF) with 90% porosity and pore size of a few tens of micrometers was prepared, on which FeCoP nanoflowers were in-situ formed. Such a combination was used as a new electrocatalyst/self-supporting electrode for high efficiency hydrogen evolution reaction. Thanks to the larger surface area (and thus many more active sites), and quicker mass transfer through the porous structure, the CF supported FeCoP electrode exhibited much better hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) performance than the commercial Ni foam supported counterpart prepared under identical conditions. In the case of the former, only −44 mV overpotential was required to achieve a geometric current density of −10 mA cm−2, and the electrode showed a high stability at a current density < −500 mA cm−2. The electrode developed in this work could be potentially used as a novel electrode for future large-scale production of hydrogen. In addition, the novel strategy reported here could be similarly used to develop many other types of self-supporting electrodes with further improved HER performance.

The development of high-efficiency, stable and low-cost electrocatalysts is a matter of cardinal significance for large-scale electrolytic hydrogen production from water. In this study, we report a hierarchical electrocatalyst of flower-like FeNiP-LDH (FeNiP on layered double hydroxide) loaded on ultrahigh porosity Co foam (CF). The structure/component superiorities and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) performance of this electrode were examined in detail. In alkaline solution, the resulting FeNiP-LDH/CF yields a current density of 10 mA/cm 2 at an overpotential of − 39 mV, which is superior than most documented transition metal phosphides electrocatalysts and even Pt catalyst (~ −53 mV). In particular, this electrode with an undamaged microstructure can maintain its HER activity over 16 h at high current density of 500–600 mA/cm 2 . Such remarkable HER performance originates from the satisfactory porous nature of Co foam as well as the special surface structure and electronic properties of phosphide/hydroxide. This work not only offers a viable modular approach for the synthesis of high-performance HER electrocatalysts, but also allows an in-depth understanding of structure-activity relationships of multistage 3D materials for energy and catalysis application.

CoTe@NixSy core-shell nanowires are designed and grown on cobalt foams via hydrothermal and electrodeposition method. Structural characterizations indicate the tightly coating of NixSy nanosheets around CoTe nanowires forms the novel core-shell nanowires. Benefiting from this structural engineering design, CoTe@NixSy core-shell nanowires supported by cobalt foams deliver the high areal specific capacitance of 7.56 F cm −2 at 3 mA cm −2 and retention rate of 81.3% after experiencing 5000 cycles. It needs to be specially mentioned that CoTe@NixSy core-shell nanowires were functionally applied in aqueous/flexible hybrid supercapacitors with activated carbon as the negative materials. The aqueous hybrid devices exhibit a maximum areal energy density of 0.77 mWh cm −2 at 2.52 mW cm −2 and retention rate of 81.9% after 5000 cycles. Meanwhile, the flexible hybrid devices show superior energy-storage performance, such as high volume energy density of 3.95 mWh cm −3 at 22.64 mW cm −3 , improved cycle stability (82.1% after experiencing5000 cycles), and remarkable flexibility. This work not only demonstrates CoTe@NixSy core-shell nanowires as the promising candidate of energy-storage device; but also provides a novel strategy for high-performance electroactive materials.
