Nitrogen-doped carbon-decorated yolk-shell CoP@FeCoP micro-polyhedra derived from MOF for efficient overall water splitting

Jinghui Shi,Fen Qiu,Wenbo Yuan,Manman Guo,Zhang-Hui Lu

Designing efficient non-precious electrocatalysts to facilitate overall water splitting is crucial and highly desirable but remains challenging. In this study, we synthesized nitrogen-doped carbon-decorated CoP@FeCoP yolk-shelled micro-polyhedras (denoted as CoP@FeCoP/NC YSMPs) via the phosphorization of ZIF-67@Co-Fe Prussian blue analogues YSMPs. The yolk-shelled construction and nitrogen-doped carbon matrix can effectively reduce the degree of CoP agglomeration, which is beneficial for increasing the specific surface area and active sites of the catalysts. The synergistic effect of yolk-shelled structure and nigtrogen-doped carbon matrix also optimizes the electronic structure and enhances the electrocatalytic activity of CoP@FeCoP/NC YSMPs. In an alkaline electrolyte, the overpotentials of hydrogen evolution reaction and oxygen evolution reaction only need 141 and 238 mV, respectively, to drive the current density of 10 mA cm −2 . When a two-electrode water splitting device was conducted with the as-prepared catalyst, it required only a low cell voltage of 1.68 V to achieve a current density of 10 mA cm −2 and displayed outstanding stability over 20 h. This work offers insights into the facile, controllable synthesis strategy of various non-precious metal nanomaterials for high-efficiency water splitting electrocatalysis.

Molybdenum, tungsten doped cobalt phosphides as efficient catalysts for coproduction of hydrogen and formate by glycerol electrolysis

Jiuli Chang,Fengfeng Song,Yan Hou,Dapeng Wu,Fang Xu,Kai Jiang,Zhiyong Gao

H 2 and formate are important energy carriers in fuel-cells and feedstocks in chemical industry. The hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) coupling with electro-oxidative cleavage of thermodynamically favorable polyols is a promising way to coproduce H 2 and formate via electrochemical means, highly active catalysts for HER and electrooxidative cleavage of polycols are the key to achieve such a goal. Herein, molybdenum (Mo), tungsten (W) doped cobalt phosphides (Co 2 P) deposited onto nickel foam (NF) substrate, denoted as Mo-Co 2 P/NF and W-Co 2 P/NF, respectively, were investigated as catalytic electrodes for HER and electrochemical glycerol oxidation reaction (GOR) to yield H 2 and formate. The W-Co 2 P/NF electrode exhibited low overpotential ( η ) of 113 mV to attain a current density ( J ) of −100 mA cm −2 for HER, while the Mo-Co 2 P/NF electrode demonstrated high GOR efficiency for selective production of formate. In situ Raman and infrared spectroscopic characterizations revealed that the evolved CoO 2 from Co 2 P is the genuine catalytic sites for GOR. The asymmetric electrolyzer based on W-Co 2 P/NF cathode and Mo-Co 2 P/NF anode delivered a J  = 100 mA cm −2 at 1.8 V voltage for glycerol electrolysis, which led to 18.2 % reduced electricity consumption relative to water electrolysis. This work highlights the potential of heteroelement doped phosphide in catalytic performances for HER and GOR, and opens up new avenue to coproduce more widespread commodity chemicals via gentle and sustainable electrocatalytic means.

ZnIn2S4 enwrapping CoP with phosphorus vacancies hollow microspheres for efficient photocatalytic hydrogen production

Xuedong Wang,Han Huang,Yongxiu Li,Qingqing Jiang,Xiaole Han,Qin Li,Yi Liu,Juncheng Hu

To address the pressing challenges of energy shortages and environmental sustainability, photocatalytic water splitting for hydrogen production has emerged as a promising strategy for solar energy conversion. While semiconductor catalysts exhibit significant potential in photocatalysis, their practical applications are hindered by limitations such as inefficient charge separation and insufficient active sites. Designing and preparing efficient, non-precious co-catalysts is therefore essential. In this work, we synthesized cobalt phosphide with phosphorus vacancy defects (vp-CoP) hollow microsphere co-catalysts and loaded them with indium zinc sulfide (ZnIn 2 S 4 ) nanosheets to construct vp-CoP@ZnIn 2 S 4 (vp-CoP@ZIS) heterojunction photocatalysts. Under visible light irradiation, the vp-CoP@ZIS photocatalyst achieved a hydrogen production rate of 7.4 mmol g −1 h −1 , which was 7.6 times higher than that of pristine ZnIn 2 S 4 . This remarkable enhancement arises from the synergistic effects between vp-CoP and ZnIn 2 S 4 . Specifically, the introduction of single-atom phosphorus vacancies significantly improved electron transfer efficiency and promoted charge separation within the heterojunction. This innovative design and synthesis strategy underscores the potential of vp-CoP@ZIS as a robust photocatalyst for solar-driven hydrogen production, providing a sustainable pathway for efficient solar energy utilization.

Oxygen-coordinated MOF membrane facilitated construction of supported Co2P/CoP@C heterostructures for water electrolysis

Chongxi Zhang,Fengting Li,Dong Wu,Qingmeng Guo,Zhanning Liu,Zhikun Wang,Zixi Kang,Lili Fan,Daofeng Sun

Integration of cobalt phosphides (Co2P and CoP) in a carbon matrix shows great promise for developing high-performance catalysts for water electrolysis. Nevertheless, the controlled synthesis of these two phases with an effective interface, uniform dispersion, and a simplified synthesis process is still challenging. Herein, we proposed a strategy that involves pre-construction of the Co/CoO@C heterostructure followed by post-conversion by phosphorization to achieve the precise synthesis of the Co2P/CoP@C heterostructure, which was realized by utilizing a MOF as the self-sacrificial template. The oxygen-coordinated MOF that shows advantages in building the Co/CoO heterostructure was employed in this work and grown into a high-quality membrane via cathodic electrodeposition on the graphite substrate (Gss). The obtained catalyst (Gss-Co2P/CoP@C-800) requires 146 and 365 mV overpotentials to achieve a current density of 100 mA cm−2 for the HER and OER, respectively, and 1.54 V to achieve a current density of 10 mA cm−2 for water electrolysis. Beyond the significantly enhanced conductivity that originates from the robust interaction between the MOF and Gss, the establishment of an effective Co2P/CoP interface also plays a pivotal role in contributing to the high performance of Gss-Co2P/CoP@C-800. As revealed by density functional theory (DFT) calculations, the unique d-orbital electron distribution of Co2P/CoP and the enhanced state density near the Fermi level facilitate its efficient electron transport and render the Co2P/CoP heterostructure region a crucial active site for water electrolysis. This study will provide new insights into the rational design and construction of heterostructures based on MOFs for efficient and green energy conversions.

Boosting Photoelectrochemical Water Oxidation with Cobalt Phosphide Nanosheets on Porous BiVO4

Haili Tong,Yi Jiang,Qian Zhang,Wenchao Jiang,Kaili Wang,Xiaoxi Luo,Ze Lin,Lixin Xia

Modification of the semiconductor surface by cobalt-rich catalysts is an effective strategy to improve the photoelectrochemical (PEC) water oxidation kinetics and migration of photogenerated electron and hole. In this study, cobalt phosphide (CoP) nanosheet was integrated on the nanoporous bismuth vanadate (BiVO4) electrode by using the hydrothermal method. The introduction of CoP significantly improved the PEC performance of the photoanode, with a photocurrent up to 4.0 mA cm–2 at 1.23 V (versus RHE) under simulated 100 mW cm–2 irradiation, a 3-fold enhancement over that obtained by the bare BiVO4. The BiVO4+CoP photoanode exhibited an impressive early onset of water oxidation, with a more than 220 mV cathodic shift of the onset potential, superior to the typical Co3O4 and Co–Pi cocatalysts-modified BiVO4 photoanode. Systematic studies show that the improvement in PEC performance by CoP is mainly due to the restraint of surface charge recombination and increase in photovoltage.

A facile preparation strategy for lignin-based carbon encapsulate cobalt/cobalt phosphides heterojunctions for boosting acidic hydrogen evolution reaction

Jianfei Li,Qichang Wang,Wenjie Zhang,Kai Zhang,Dekui Shen

The coupling of cobalt and cobalt phosphides has been demonstrated to be an efficient strategy to enhance the catalytic activity for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Herein, the lignin-based carbon encapsulated cobalt/cobalt phosphides heterojunctions (Co/Co 2 P@LGC) was synthesized successfully on the lignin-based carbon by carbothermal reduction integrated with post-phosphidation. The strong coupling interaction in the heterostructure promoted the establishment of a distinct synergy effect between Co and P atoms, resulting in the redistribution of electronic structure. The outstanding porous sheet structure of lignin-derived carbon facilitated the exposure of more accessible active sites and self-dopants were conducive to the formation of more carbon defects. As expected, the best catalysts, Co/Co 2 P@LGC-450 exhibited excellent HER performance in 0.5 M H 2 SO 4 , which afford a current density of 10 mA/cm 2 with only 150 mV and a Tafel slope of 86 mV dec −1 , as well as a robust stability for 120 h at 10 mA cm −2 . This research not only presented a facile method for heterostructure electrocatalysts preparation, but also offered crucial insights into the lignin valorisation.

Cobalt phosphide/carbon dots composite as an efficient electrocatalyst for oxygen evolution reaction

Mengmeng Zhu,Yunjie Zhou,Yue Sun,Cheng Zhu,Lulu Hu,Jin Gao,Hui Huang,Yang Liu,Zhenhui Kang

The oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is a promising energy conversion system, which has been studied a lot in recent years. However, owing to the high overpotential and sluggish kinetics of the OER, an efficient electrocatalyst is necessary to lower the overpotential and accelerate the reaction. In this paper, we report a cobalt phosphide (CoP)/carbon dots (CDs) composite as an electrocatalyst for the OER for the first time. A facile two-step method was used to synthesize the CoP/CDs composite and the concentration of CDs in the composite was further regulated. The experimental results show that when the amount of CDs in the composite is 6 mg (28.79 wt%C), the obtained CoP/CDs composite exhibits optimal electrocatalytic activity (with an overpotential of 400 mV in 1 M KOH at a current density of 10 mA cm−2) and high stability towards the OER. The good electrocatalytic activity of the composite is attributed to the small size of CoP and CDs and rapid electron transfer of CDs.

3D self-standing grass-like cobalt phosphide vesicles-decorated nanocones grown on Ni-foam as an efficient electrocatalyst for hydrogen evolution reaction

Kang Ge,Yanwei Zeng,Guodian Dong,Longfei Zhao,Zhentao Wang,Ming Huang

The growing hydrogen consumption has greatly promoted the development of efficient, stable and low-cost electrocatalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Constructing functional nanostructures is an efficacious strategy to optimize catalytic performance. Herein, we present a feasible route to fabricate distinctive 3D grass-like cobalt phosphide nanocones clad with mini-vesicles on the hierarchically porous Ni foam, which can directly serve as a binder-free electrocatalyst with superior catalytic activity and durability in HER. Thanks to its distinctive 3D microstructure featured with favourable pore-size distribution, abundant active sites provided by mini-vesicles and rapid electron transfer with the assistance of Ni foam, the as-grown grass-like CoP/NF electrocatalyst has shown a favourable overpotential in an acidic solution with an onset overpotential of ∼35 mV, an overpotential of 71 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm −2 , reduced by 60 mV in comparison with that realized by urchin-like CoP/NF nanoprickles. Moreover, it has exhibited an excellent HER activity in the alkaline medium , with an overpotential of 117 mV at 10 mA cm −2 , a Tafel slope of 63.0 mV dec −1 and a long-term electrochemical durability.

Deep Dehalogenation of Florfenicol Using Crystalline CoP Nanosheet Arrays on a Ti Plate via Direct Cathodic Reduction and Atomic H

Huiling Liu,Jinglong Han,Jili Yuan,Chengbin Liu,Dong Wang,Tian Liu,Meijun Liu,Jinming Luo,Aijie Wang,John C. Crittenden

Efficient elimination of antibacterial activity of halogenated antibiotics by dehalogenation pretreatment is desired for a biochemical treatment process. In this study, crystalline cobalt phosphide nanosheet arrays on a Ti plate (C-CoP/Ti) are fabricated by a simple electrodeposition and phosphorization process. The crystalline structure greatly promotes atomic hydrogen (H*) generation. Moreover, the nanosheet arrays can provide abundant active sites and accelerate electron transfer and mass transport. As a result, the dehalogenation rate of florfenicol (FLO, an emerging organic pollutant) on C-CoP/Ti is 11.1, 2.97, and 13.6 times higher than that on amorphous CoP/Ti, Pd/Ti, and bare Ti, respectively. The C-CoP/Ti electrode achieves 97.4% dehalogenation of FLO (20 mg L–1) within 30 min at −1.2 V (vs Ag/AgCl). Nearly 100% of Cl and 20% of F are broken away within 120 min, showing the highest electrocatalytic defluorination efficiency reported so far. Both experimental results and theoretical calculations reveal that the dehalogenation of FLO on C-CoP/Ti is synergistically accomplished via direct reduction of electron transfer and indirect reduction of H*. This study develops a highly efficient non-noble metal electrode material for dehalogenation of halogenated organic compounds.

Enhanced Water Splitting Electrocatalysis with Heterointerfacial Cobalt Phosphide In Situ Supported on a Cellulose-Derived Carbon Aerogel

Taoyi Shen,Xiang Chen,Zhongce Hu,Zhenhua Yan,Lanlan Yang,Hongming Sun,Rui Zhang,Hou-Yong Yu

The active site density, intrinsic activity, and supporting substrate of cobalt phosphide catalysts are vital to their performance in alkaline water electrolysis. In this work, a CoP/Co2P loaded on cellulose nanofiber-derived carbon aerogels (CP/CCAs) bifunctional electrocatalyst with a three-dimensional network and heterostructure is illustrated through sequential facile hydrothermal, freeze-drying, and phosphorylation processes. The three-dimensional network of carbon aerogels derived from cellulose nanofibers reveals a specific surface area of 183.41 m2/g, greatly enriching the active sites and facilitating the electron and mass transportation. Besides, interactions between CoP/Co2P with a heterogeneous structure and carbon aerogels modulate the electronic structure to enhance the intrinsic activity of the catalysts. Benefiting from these advantages, CP/CCAs-2 demonstrates a superior oxygen evolution reaction activity (η10 mA cm–2 = 277 mV) over the benchmark RuO2 and a moderate hydrogen evolution reaction performance (η10 mA cm–2 = 63 mV). Density functional theory calculations further reveal that the coupling of CoP/Co2P and cellulose-derived carbon aerogels promotes the water adsorption and activates the H–O bond. As a result, the alkaline electrolyzer assembled with CP/CCAs-2 both as a cathode and an anode shows a low cell voltage of 1.59 V at a current density of 10 mA cm–2 and good stability. This work provides a strategy for phosphide electrocatalysts composited with green carbon carriers for overall water splitting.

Structural dependence of electrosynthesized cobalt phosphide/black phosphorus pre-catalyst for oxygen evolution in alkaline media

He Xiao,Xiaoling Du,Man Zhao,Ya Li,Tianjun Hu,Haishun Wu,Jianfeng Jia,Nianjun Yang

The integration of black phosphorus (BP) with metal phosphides is known to produce high-performance electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reduction (OER), although increased stability and prevention of the degradation of their lone pairs would be desirable improvements. In this work, cobalt phosphide (CoP)/BP heterostructures were electrochemically synthesized with a two-electrode system, where cobalt ions were generated in situ at a Co anode, and non-aggregated BP nanosheets (NSs) were exfoliated from the bulky BP cathode. With an electrolysis voltage of 30 V, the CoP/BP heterostructure exhibited a superior and stable OER performance (e.g., an overpotential of 300 mV at 10 mA cm−2, which is 41 mV lower than that obtained with a RuO2 catalyst). The CoOx formed in situ during the OER catalysis and remaining CoP synergistically contributed to the enhanced OER performance. The present strategy provides a new electrosynthetic method to prepare stable BP electrocatalysts and also further expands their electrochemical applications.

Mesoporous cobalt–cobalt phosphide electrocatalyst for water splitting

E. Loni,M.H. Siadati,A. Shokuhfar

As a sustainable hydrogen/oxygen production method for the near future, water splitting is still dependent on the appropriate catalysts for acceptable efficiency. Here, for the first time, using silica template, a mesoporous cobalt-cobalt phosphide (Meso-Co/Co 2 P) electrocatalyst was produced. For investigating its structure, composition, and morphology, X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) analyses were accomplished. Chronoamperometry, cyclic and linear sweep voltammetry studies exhibited excellent electrocatalytic activity. It needed only an overpotential of 57 mV to produce a 10 mA cm −2 of anodic current density. A water electrolyzer with Meso-Co/Co 2 P as both anode and cathode in an alkaline medium generated a current density of 10 mA cm −2 at the potential of 1.57 V.
