Currently black pigments face challenges of non-ideal luminance factor (L-value), and the presence of potentially hazardous cobalt (Co). A novel stable Na 2 NiMn 2 O 6 (NNMO) black pigment is reported in this work. The pigment exhibits excellent properties, including an ideal low L-value, Co-free composition, and stable bright black hue. A range of analytical techniques are employed to evaluate the properties of the novel pigment, including XRD, SEM, EDS-Mapping, XPS, UV–V is , and CIELAB colorimetry. The chromaticity parameters of the black pigment are L∗ = 24.39, a∗ = 0.21, and b∗ = 0.39. The bright black color of the pigment and the glazing sample was attributed to the combined contributions of Ni 2+ and Mn 3+ /Mn 4+ in the Na 2 NiMn 2 O 6 pigment and NiMnO 3 , Na 4 Mn 9 O 18 , Mn 2 O 3 ingredients in the glazing sample. This research offering valuable guidance for the development of novel, Co-free, and low L-value black pigment.

Due to the urgency of developing high energy density cathode materials in power batteries, as well as the high price and environmental unfriendliness of cobalt, researchers are working on ultra-high nickel low cobalt and ultra-high nickel cobalt-free layered cathode materials. However, the poor cyclic stability and rate performance of this material resulted from structural instability and severe surface/interface side reactions during cycling seriously hinder its practical application. In this paper, LiNi 0.9 Mn 0.1 O 2 (NM90) cathode material is modified by La 2 O 3 coating, and La 3+ doping caused by thermal diffusion is achieved simultaneously. The synergistic enhancement of the two modifications can effectively improve the layered structure and reduce surface/interface side reactions. The dual-modified material shows good structural stability, the La 2 O 3 coating does not fall off and the active material does not appear fragmentation and collapse after 100 cycles. At the same time, the dual-modified material also shows excellent electrochemical performance, with a capacity retention of 83.19% after 100 cycles at 1 C and a reversible capacity of 129.9 mAh g −1 at 10 C. The electrochemical mechanism reveals that the dual-modified material effectively reduces the charge transfer resistance and greatly increases the Li + diffusion coefficient. It will provide useful reference and technical support for the research of other electrode materials. Graphical abstract The NM90 and La 2 O 3 -coated NM90 particles have similar spherical morphology and are formed by the agglomeration of many primary particles; the surface of NM90 material is evenly coated by La 2 O 3 and No obvious boundary between La 2 O 3 and NM90 materials is found; LiNi 0.9 Mn 0.1 O 2 cathode material coated by 1wt% La 2 O 3 has the best cycle stability.

Reversible proton-conducting solid oxide cells (R-PSOCs) are considered to be one of the most promising devices for efficient power generation and hydrogen production. However, the requirement of high catalytic activity for fast oxygen reduction/evolution reaction (ORR/OER) and durability under high steam concentration of air electrode materials remains the major challenge for the practical application of R-PSOCs. Here, a series of cobalt-free Ruddlesden–Popper perovskite of Nd 0.8 Sr 1.2 Ni 1-x Fe x O 4±δ are reported with mixed conductivity for enhanced ORR/OER kinetics. The R-PSOCs with an optimal Nd 0.8 Sr 1.2 Ni 0.7 Fe 0.3 O 4±δ air electrode show a high peak power density of 1.28 W cm −2 in the fuel cell mode and a promising current density of 3.24 A cm −2 at 1.3 V in the electrolysis cell mode at 700 °C. In addition, the R-PSOCs show favorable stability under the fuel cell, electrolysis, and reversible modes for hundreds of hours. This work demonstrates that the Ruddlesden–Popper materials can be utilized as suitable air electrodes for R-PSOCs.

Co-free Li-rich Mn-based cathode materials (Co-free LRMOs) have become one of the most promising cathode materials in lithium-ion batteries for the next generation due to their low cost, high capacity, and environmental friendliness. Under high voltage, redox reactions involving anions can easily lead to various issues, including oxygen release, dissolution of transition metal elements (TMs), and structural collapse in these materials. The absence of the Co element further exacerbates this issue. Here, a simple one-step solid-phase reaction strategy is proposed to achieve nanoscale dual modification of the Co-free LRMOs with F and Tb doping. The dual modification has a relatively small impact on the cell parameters and Li+ diffusion ability of the LRMOs, leading to no significant improvement in its rate performance. The modified LRMOs only exhibited discharge capacities of 220.7, 200.1, 140.0, 115.5, and 90.9 mAh·g–1 at 0.1, 0.2, 1.0, 2.0, and 5.0 C, respectively. However, the modified Co-free LRMOs exhibit extremely strong structural stability and retain 95.1% of the initial capacity after 300 cycles, so far, the highest capacity retention rates among all Ni/Mn-based Li-rich materials. Mechanism studies have shown that the enhancement in structural stability of the Co-free LRMOs is attributed to the increased concentration of oxygen vacancies and Ni3+ ions through F doping. Furthermore, Tb doping not only hinders the release of O2 but also enhances the Li+ migration and electronic conductivity coefficient of the LRMOs.

Reversible protonic ceramic electrochemical cells (R-PCECs) are ideal, high-efficiency devices that are environmentally friendly and have a modular design. This paper studies BaFe 0.6 Zr 0.1 Y 0.3 O 3− δ (BFZY3) as a cobalt-free perovskite oxygen electrode for high-performance R-PCECs where Y ions doping can increase the concentration of oxygen vacancies with a remarkable increase in catalytic performance. The cell with configuration of Ni-BZCYYb/BZCYYb/BFZY3 demonstrated promising performance in dual modes of fuel cells (FCs) and electrolysis cells (ECs) at 650 °C with low polarization resistance of 0.13 Ω cm 2 , peak power density of 546.59 mW/cm 2 in FC mode, and current density of − 1.03 A/cm 2 at 1.3 V in EC mode. The alternative operation between FC and EC modes for up to eight cycles with a total of 80 h suggests that the cell with BFZY3 is exceptionally stable and reversible over the long term. The results indicated that BFZY3 has considerable potential as an air electrode material for R-PCECs, permitting efficient oxygen reduction and water splitting.

Benefiting from the extra contribution of O redox, Co-free Li-rich layered oxides (LRNMO) can satisfy the requirement of high specific capacities. However, during the high-voltage charging process, lattice oxygen being oxidized to O − or O 2 leads to a gradual transition of the structure from layered to spinel phase, capacity and voltage decline, hindering the practical application of LRNMO in the lithium-ion battery. Here, a surface modification strategy of Li 1.2 Ni 0.32 Mn 0.48 O 2-δ doped with Ta 5+ ions is proposed, in which the Ta 5+ ions occupy the lithium sites of the lattice structure on the surface layer of LRNMO and form a Ta 2 O 5 coating layer. The modified electrode exhibits excellent rate performance and cycling stability, with 94.9% and 85.5% capacity retention rate and voltage retention rate, respectively, after 200 cycles at 1C. Moreover, the initial coulomb efficiency and ionic conductivity of the modified electrode are also apparently enhanced. Simultaneously, the decreased Li/Ni mixing degree of the modified electrode reflects the improvement of the structural stability . Therefore, the modification strategy through strong metal–oxygen bonding to integrate the surface structure to regulate the oxygen activity provides a new direction for the design of high energy density Co-free Li-rich cathode materials .

As one of the most promising cathodes for Li-ion batteries, Li-rich layered oxides suffer from low Coulombic efficiency, severe capacity fading, and voltage decay, which are related to the aggregated Li@Mn 6 superstructure units. Herein, a Co-free Li-rich oxide Li[Li 1/4 Mn 1/2 Ni 1/6 Al 1/12 ]O 2 through Al substitution of Co in Li[Li 1/4 Mn 1/2 Ni 1/6 Co 1/12 ]O 2 , is designed. Combining the average structural refinement with the detailed local structural/chemical analysis, it is found that the introduced Al ions occupy the Mn sites in Li@Mn 6 superstructure units, which further induces the partial replacement of the central Li ions in Li@Mn 6 units by Ni 2+ . The modified superstructure units stabilize the anionic framework and suppress structural degradation during long-term cycling. A superior cyclability (a capacity retention of 91.4% after 500 cycles at 1 C) is achieved. This work not only deepens the understanding into the mechanism of Al substitution, but also provides a novel route to design high-performance Li-rich cathodes by modifying the local functional units.

Proton-conducting solid oxide cells are regarded as promising solid-state energy conversion devices to realize the high-efficiency conversion between electrical energy and chemical energy. However, the high cost, easily reducible ion characteristics, and large thermal expansion coefficient related to the valence state of the traditional high-catalytic cobalt-based oxygen electrode are unavoidable problems. Cobalt-free barium ferrite-based oxides with triple-conducting properties are considered the most promising prospective candidates for highly active oxygen electrode materials because of the increased electrochemical reaction active sites, excellent thermal stability, and low thermal expansion coefficient. In this work, by introducing 5% A-site deficiency at the atomic scale, the oxygen vacancy concentration is increased so that the catalytic reaction kinetics and proton-conduction ability of ABO3-type perovskite oxygen electrode material BaFe0.5Sn0.2Bi0.3O3−δ are improved. The effects of non-stoichiometry on the phase composition, microstructure, hydration capacity, thermal expansion characteristics, conductivity, and chemical stability are investigated. In both fuel cell and electrolysis cell operation modes, the proton-conducting solid oxide cells with the A-site-deficient Ba0.95Fe0.5Sn0.2Bi0.3O3−δ oxygen electrode demonstrate excellent electrochemical performance, giving a peak power density of 0.69 W cm–2 (increased by 19.0%) and an electrolysis current density of 1.64 A cm–2 (increased by 30.2%) at 700 °C. Moreover, even at 600 °C with 50% high steam partial pressure, electrolysis for hydrogen production is maintained for about 100 h without significant attenuation, confirming the vital role of A-site defect engineering in the design of advanced oxygen electrode materials.

The performance of Sr 2 FeTi 0.75 Mo 0.25 O 6− δ (SFTM) as a potential cathode material has been investigated in this study. The SFTM material with a cubic perovskite structure, has a good chemical compatibility with the Ce 0.8 Sm 0.2 O 1.9 (SDC) electrolyte at 1100 °C for 10 h. The electrical conductivity of the SFTM sample reaches a maximum value of 2.31 S cm −1 at 500 °C. SFTM shows an average thermal expansion coefficient (TEC) of 13.6 × 10 −6 K −1 in the temperature range of 30–1000 °C in air, which is close to that of the typical electrolyte material. The polarization resistance ( R p ) of a SFTM cathode on a SDC electrolyte reaches a value of 0.14 Ω cm 2 at 800 °C. Peak power density of a single-cell with the SFTM cathode on a 300 μm-thick SDC electrolyte reaches 394 mW cm −2 at 800 °C. These results indicate that SFTM is a potential cathode material for solid oxide fuel cells.

Co-free and Ni-rich LiNi 0.95 Mn 0.05 O 2 (NM95) cathodes are expected to be widely employed in power batteries due to their high capacity and low cost. However, the loss of Co and increase in Ni compromise cyclic stability and high-rate performance. Herein, PPy coating layer with excellent flexibility and conductivity is introduced on NM95 surface to enhance the structural stability and charge transfer properties. X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray spectroscopy, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry are utilized to elaborate on positive influence of PPy on electrochemical performance. PPy coating alleviates volumetric changes of cathode caused by charge/discharge process, suppressing mechanical fragmentation. Moreover, PPy provides protective layer to suppress side reactions and isolate the corrosion of electrolytes. Besides, PPy is widely recognized excellent electronic conductor that can promote electronic conduction. It is revealed that PPy-coated NM95 cathode exhibits excellent capacity retention of 90.1 % (4.3 V) and 84.4 % (4.5 V) after 100 charge/discharge cycles at 1 C. Moreover, capacity retention is 91.1 % after 100 cycles and initial capacity is as high as 153.4 mAh/g at 5 C. These results indicate that flexible and electronically conductive coating is effective strategy to enhance cyclic stability of NM95 cathodes.

Co-free cathode materials are gradually attracted wide attention due to the low budget and environmental friendliness, but their application is still prevented by the poor rate performance and cyclic stability. Herein, the Co-free lithium-rich cathode materials (Li 1.2 Ni 0.2 Mn 0.6 O 2 , LRNMO) with a nano-micron combined morphology is prepared by a simple oxalate co-precipitation route and further modified by an anion doping strategy. It has been found that the F − anion doping can increase the content of Mn 4+ in LRNMO, reduce the influence of the Jahn-Teller effect, and further impede the transition from layered phase to spinel phase. As a result, the as-obtained Li 1.2 Ni 0.2 Mn 0.6 O 2-x F x (x = 0.04, named as F4-LRNMO) shows an optimal electrochemical performance, for instance, high discharge capacity (243 mAh g −1 ) with a satisfactory initial coulombic efficiency of 84.37% at 0.1C. Meanwhile, the F4-LRNMO sample also can display high capacity retention of 92.2% after 200 cycles at 1C, and a remarkably high discharge capacity of 151 mAh g −1 with capacity retention of 95.4% after 100 cycles even at high rate of 5C. In consequence, this work can not only ameliorate the defects of poor stability and low initial coulomb efficiency, but also offer a meaningful exploration for the development of Co-free lithium-rich cathode materials with high capacity and high performance-price ratio.

The traditional oxygen electrode in solid oxide electrolysis cells (SOECs), (La,Sr)(Co,Fe)O3 (LSCF), suffers from high cost, evaporation at high temperatures, and societal aspects of the use of Co. In this work, a Co-free B-site multielement (so-called high-entropy) perovskite oxide, La0.6Sr0.4Cu0.2Fe0.2Ti0.2Mn0.2Ni0.2O3-δ (LSCuFTMN), has been synthesized and successfully applied as a novel oxygen electrode. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) data indicate that the multiple transition elements in the B-site exist in various valence states, leading to a spatially variable electron structure. Electrochemical measurements of LSCuFTMN suggest that the material exhibits extraordinary catalytic activity and stability under the studied working atmospheres and a decrease in polarization resistance by 24% compared to LSCF. By distribution of relaxation time (DRT) analysis, LSCuFTMN possesses better mass and charge transfer performance than traditional LSCF. An SOEC with LSCuFTMN as the oxygen electrode has been assembled and tested, and a current density of 1.2 A cm–2 is obtained at 2.0 V and 800 °C in electrolysis of pure CO2, higher by nearly 50% compared to LSCF. The faradaic efficiency is over 95%. No clear recession is observed in the long term stability test. It is evident that multication – so-called high-entropy – oxides could be promising materials for improving the working performance of SOECs.
