The significant increase in demand for molybdenum (Mo) resources has led to excessive molybdate (Mo(VI)) content in water, posing a challenge to the innovation of Mo(VI) removal technology in water bodies. Nanoscale iron sulfide (FeS) has an important effect on the environmental behavior of Mo(VI) in aquatic solutions. To address the issue of easy agglomeration and poor stability of FeS, zirconia sol-modified nanoscale iron sulfide (Zr-FeS) was synthesized, and the adsorption behavior of Zr-FeS on Mo(VI) from diverse aquatic solutions was also investigated in this study. The results showed that the removal rate of Mo(VI) was increased from 28.60% to 78.32% within pH value of 7.0 when Zr/Fe molar ratio was elevated from 0 to 0.5. Moreover, the Mo(VI) adsorption efficiency by Zr-FeS was closely related to pH values, and acid conditions were beneficial for Mo(VI) adsorption. The pseudo-second-order model demonstrated a better fit to the data compared to other models. The maximum adsorption capacity of Zr-FeS towards Mo(VI) value calculated by Langmuir isotherm model was 118.48 mg/g at 298 K. The thermodynamic analysis revealed that the adsorption process of Mo(VI) was endothermic, entropically favorable, and spontaneous in nature. Competing anions (e.g., PO 4 3– , HCO 3 – , and SO 4 2– ) partially inhibited the adsorption process of Mo(VI) by Zr-FeS. While the process was less affected by dissolved oxygen and aging. The results of Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and density functional theory (DFT) calculations revealed that the main mechanisms for Mo(VI) removal were hydrogen bonding, electrostatic interaction and surface complexation. The high stability and fast adsorption rate indicated that Zr-FeS was a promising material to remove Mo(VI) from the aquatic solutions.

BACKGROUND: Rhenium is a rare and valuable metal coexisting with molybdenum in molybdenite and sulfide copper ores and is hard to separate. Methods such as solvent extraction, ion exchange, adsorption, precipitation, etc. have been used to separate and purify Re(VII), and resin ion exchange has been widely investigated and used owing to its convenient operation and relatively low-cost. The main challenge comes from the preparation of resins having high performance and stability. In an earlier study, an N-methylimidazolium functionalized strong basic anion exchange resin was successfully synthesized and used for Cr(IV) extraction. This paper, reports on further synthesis and application of this resin for adsorption and separation of Re(VII) and Mo(VI), especially from copper arsenic filter cake. RESULTS: At pH 6.25, Re(VII) and Mo(VI) can be effectively separated with the N-methylimidazolium functionalized strong basic anion exchange resin, giving a Re(VII) recovery of up to 93.3%, but only 5.1% for Mo(VI). When using the copper arsenic filter cake sample 89.1% Re(VII) recovery was achieved. CONCLUSION: The N-methylimidazolium functionalized strong basic anion exchange resin exhibited high selectivity and recovery for Re(VII) in a mixed system. © 2012 Society of Chemical Industry

The main challenge in separating molybdenum(VI) and vanadium(V) which have similar properties results in great difficulties in the green recycling of hazardous spent catalysts. Here, selective facilitating transport and stripping are integrated into the polymer inclusion membrane electrodialysis process (PIMED) to separate Mo(VI) and V(V) to overcome the complicated co-extraction and stepwise-stripping in conventional solvent extraction . The influences of various parameters, the selective transport mechanism, and respective activation parameters were systematically investigated. Results revealed that the affinity of the Aliquat 36 as the carrier and PVDF-HFP as the base polymer of PIM towards Mo(VI) is stronger than that of V(V), while the strong interaction between Mo(VI) and carrier caused low migration through the membrane. By the combination of adjusting and controlling the electric density and strip acidity, the interaction was destroyed and the transport was facilitated. After optimization, stripping efficiencies of Mo(VI) and V (V) increased from 44.4% to 93.1% and reduced from 31.9% to 1.8%, respectively, while their separation coefficient increased 16.3 times to 333.4. The activation energy, enthalpy and entropy for the transport of Mo(VI) were determined to be 4.846 kJ mol −1 , 6.745 kJ mol −1 and − 310.838 J mol −1 K −1 , respectively. The present work demonstrates that the separation of similar metal ions could be improved by fine tuning the affinity and interaction between metal ions and the PIM, thus providing new insights into the recycling of similar metal ions from secondary resources.

A novel greenness and low-cost biosorbent was prepared by polyethylene polyamine-modified waste biomass of sugarcane bagasse in this study, which was used to remove molybdenum(VI) from aqueous solution. The structural properties and adsorption mechanism of this amine-functionalized sugarcane bagasse adsorbent (SCB-A) on Mo(VI) were investigated by SEM–EDS, BET, TG, FTIR, XPS, and batch adsorption experiments. The results show that the adsorption reaction between SCB-A and Mo(VI) was a spontaneous endothermic process, and its theoretical maximum adsorption capacity was about 231.48 mg/g. The adsorption capacity was 8.93-fold compared to that of pristine sugarcane bagasse. This adsorption process was more consistent with the Langmuir model and pseudo-second-order kinetics model, indicating that this process was monolayer adsorption on a homogeneous surface and the adsorption rate was controlled by the chemisorption process. SCB-A possessed great reusability, maintaining a stable adsorption capacity after five recycles. For the adsorption toward Mo(VI), SCB-A also exhibited superior selectivity in a multi-ion coexistence solution. Therefore, SCB-A has tremendous potential in the economically and feasible removal of Mo(VI) from wastewater. Graphical Abstract

Although iron sulfide (FeS) has been used to remove heavy metals from the environment, its capability for remediation of molybdenum (Mo) contaminated soil and some important influencing factors are still unclear. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether soil Mo(VI) contamination could be immobilized by using nano-FeS. The effects of FeS dosage, natural organic matter (NOM), and inorganic salts on soil Mo(VI) immobilization properties were compared and analyzed. The results showed that the addition of FeS significantly reduced the leaching of Mo in the soil. The amount of Mo leaching dropped from 87.66 to 2.20 mg/L when the molar ratio of FeS to Mo(VI) increased from 1:1 to 50:1. It was discovered that the major two mechanisms for the immobilization of soil Mo(VI) by FeS were adsorption and reduction. Soil Mo leaching was promoted with the existence of NOM, but the addition of SO 4 2– and H 2 PO 4 – prevented soil Mo(VI) leaching. Mo leaching from soil that was polluted with Mo(VI) and included humic acid, salicylic acid, SO 4 2– , or H 2 PO 4 – was reduced by 116.41–77.54 mg/L, 116.41–112.72 mg/L, 116.41–72.45 mg/L, and 116.41–84.39 mg/L, respectively, after FeS treatment. Meanwhile, the cabbage mustard growth experiments findings indicated that FeS particles have a significant field application potential for Mo(VI) contaminated soil remediation due to their high Mo(VI) immobilization efficiency.

Industrial applications and environmental awareness recently prompted vanadium recovery spell from secondary resources. In this work, a polymer inclusion membrane containing trioctylmethylammonium chloride as carrier was successfully employed in electrodialysis for vanadium recovery from acidic sulfate solutions. The permeability coefficient of V(V) increased from 0.29 µm·s -1 (without electric field) to 4.10 µm·s -1 (with the 20 mA·cm -2 current density) . The transport performance of VO 2 SO 4 - , which was the predominant species containing V(V) in the acidic region (pH <3), was influenced by the aqueous pH value and sulfate concentration. Under an electric field, a low concentrated H 2 SO 4 solution (0.2 M) effectively stripped V(V) from the membranes, avoiding the requirement of a highly concentrated H 2 SO 4 without electric field. Under the optimum conditions, the permeability coefficient and flux reached 6.80 µm·s -1 and 13.34 µmol·m -2 ·s -1 , respectively. High selectivity was observed for the separation of V(V) and Mo(VI) from mixed solutions of Co (II), Ni (II), Mn (II), and Al (III). Additionally, the separation between Mo(VI) and V(V) was further improved by adjusting the acidity of the stripping solution. The V(V) selectivity for the resulting membrane was higher than that of commercial anion exchange membranes.
