Two-dimensional (2D) layered transition metal sulfide based materials are promising candidates for electrodes of lithium ion batteries (LIBs). As one of the representatives, molybdenum disulfide (MoS 2 ), exhibits additional reversible capacity beyond their theoretical value although the lithium storage mechanism is still poorly understood. In this report, we developed a highly conducting metallic phase 1T(octahedral)-MoS 2 based electrode with metal Mo atoms confined in “graphene nanoreactor” of abnormal lithium-storage sites, which delivered a high specific capacity of ~1800 mAh g −1 at 1 A g -1 , about 2.6 times of its intercalation reactions value. Contrary to previous reports, a new lithium-storage mechanism for the high and ever-increasing capacity was proposed. The theoretical calculations and experiments show that a major contribution to the extra capacity in MoS 2 anodes is due to Mo atoms accommodate with Li + . The Mo precipitates and their full contact with Li 2 S matrix enabled the reversible Mo→Li x Mo→Mo→1T-MoS 2 reaction during charging/discharging processes. Over prolonged cycling, per Mo atomic could accommodate six Li + ions. This new proposal could help to establish an accurate electrochemical reaction mechanism of MoS 2 LIBs, which may lead to inspiration on new methods to greatly improve the performance of the MoS 2 anode.

The Haber–Bosch process, while pivotal for global ammonia production, remains energy-intensive and environmentally unsustainable. Here, we report a nitrogenase-inspired photocathode (Mo1/HsGDY@Cu2O) that synergistically integrates light-harvesting Cu2O nanowires, hydrogen-radical-generating alkynyl-rich graphdiyne (HsGDY), and atomically dispersed molybdenum sites for solar-driven nitrogen fixation. Mimicking the Fe/MoFe-cofactor collaboration in nitrogenase, the photocathode enables efficient N2 adsorption at Mo1 sites and hydrogen radical transfer from adjacent alkynyl groups, significantly lowering the energy barrier for N2 hydrogenation. Under 10-sun illumination, the system achieves a record ammonia yield of 78.9 μg cm–2 h–1 with a Faradaic efficiency of 38.9% while maintaining 86% activity over 240 h. The ammonia solution directly enhances Epipremnum aureum root growth by 2.3-fold, demonstrating immediate agricultural utility. Combined with bias-free operation and scalable solar concentration, this work provides a practical blueprint for decarbonizing fertilizer production. Operando spectroscopy and DFT calculations further reveal that the dual-site synergy─Mo1 for N2 activation and alkynyl groups for H• supply─drives the catalytic mechanism, offering a universal strategy for enzyme-inspired energy conversion systems.

Lithium-sulfur batteries (LSBs) present wide range of market and tremendous application potential. Nevertheless, the “shuttle effect” of lithium polysulfides (LiPSs) and the sluggish redox kinetics restrict their large-scale application. We report herein the Mo-substituted Keggin type H 3 PW 10 Mo 2 O 40 (PW 10 Mo 2 ) evenly decorated on the MWCNTs conductive framework by electrostatic attraction as the functional interlayer materials. W and Mo atoms in PW 10 Mo 2 provide chemical adsorption sites for polysulfides, and density functional theory (DFT) calculations further confirm that Mo sites possess stronger capture ability to LiPSs than that of W sites. Meanwhile, the Mo implantation can effectively expedite the redox reaction of LiPSs. Furthermore, MWCNTs afford the plentiful attachment points for PW 10 Mo 2 , thus exposing abundant active sites to adsorb and catalyze polysulfides. The resulting cells demonstrate superior discharge capacity of 1064.9 mAh g −1 under 0.2C up to 100 cycles as well as excellent long-life cycling stability with low recession rate of 0.051 % under 3C up to 1000 cycles. Our work illustrates the effect of Mo atom substitution of polyoxotungstates as interlayer materials and thereby provides a new strategy for developing LSBs with superior reversible capacity and long cycling performance.

High-electron-density Pt 0 nanoparticles (NPs) with excellent hydrogen activation and spillover capacity offer unique advantages in volatile organic sulfur selective hydrogenation reactions. Taking advantage of the more preferential and effective anchoring of Mo atoms at the γ-Al 2 O 3 terminal hydroxyl (OH) groups and its electron modification role, competitive anchoring is induced by a simple co-impregnation synthesis method to promote the agglomeration of low-loading Pt atoms into high concentrations of electron-rich and enlarged Pt NPs, which resulted in a substantial increase in the active centers for hydrogen dissociation. The Mo doping amount with the best Pt aggregation efficiency is 3 wt.%, and the hydrogen spillover efficiency of 1Pt3Mocom/Al catalyst is significantly higher than that of 1Pt/Al catalyst, which efficiently convert carbon disulfide (CS 2 ) (95%–100%) while maintaining a methanethiol (CH 3 SH) selectivity of 85% at 250 °C or a methane (CH 4 ) selectivity of 92% at 310 °C in the 24 h long-term test. In situ DRIFTS revealed that the improved catalyst performance is due to the elevated capacity to generate the intermediates HCSS * , CH 2 S * , and CH 3 S * . The 1Pt3Mocom/Al catalyst synthesized by competitive anchoring strategy greatly reduces the Pt consumption and is instructive for the exploitation of low-cost Pt NPs active centers.

Oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) can realize the goal of in-situ H 2 O 2 generation. A suitable catalyst ensures a proper binding strength between the electrocatalyst and the intermediate (i.e., *OOH), thereby avoiding the 4-electron ORR process and H 2 O production. Herein, we demonstrate that single molybdenum (Mo) atoms/clusters doped on carbon nanotubes can effectively alter the ORR pathway to generate H 2 O 2 ; meanwhile, the established sequential ORR system for H 2 O 2 production can tandemly remove ibuprofen (IBU) and other organic contaminants from water and wastewater. The results reveal that single atomic Mo clusters preferentially acted as the active sites that are merely required to overcome 0.11 eV downhill to form *OOH. Surprisingly, this tandemly constructed ORR with in-situ generated H 2 O 2 performed better than the in-vitro H 2 O 2 system. These findings offer a promising solution to reduce the costs related to the production and transportation of H 2 O 2 for various applications, including the oxidation and removal of emerging organic contaminants from water and wastewater.
