Preparation, microstructure and mechanical properties of a Ce-PSZ reinforced molybdenum alloy

Fengshun Du,Bohua Duan,Dezhi Wang,Zhuangzhi Wu,Xinli Liu

Improving the poor plasticity and fracture toughness of molybdenum alloys is the key to expanding their industrial applications. In this experiment, a cerium partially stabilized zirconia (Ce-PSZ) reinforced molybdenum alloy with outstanding properties was obtained by combining the hydrothermal method and the powder metallurgy technology. This study investigated how varying Ce-PSZ content influences the microstructure and mechanical properties of Mo/Ce-PSZ alloys. The results show that with increasing Ce-PSZ addition, the relative density and hardness of the alloys gradually increase, while the tensile strength, plasticity, and fracture toughness exhibit a tendency to initially increase and subsequently decrease. When 1.5 wt% of Ce-PSZ is added, the Mo alloys achieve excellent overall mechanical properties, with an ultimate tensile strength of 528.5 MPa, elongation of 29.3 %, and fracture toughness of 38.5 MPa∙m 1/2 . These values are about 22.7 %, 22.5 %, and 83.3 % higher than those of pure molybdenum. The substantial enhancement in elongation and fracture toughness can be predominantly ascribed to the refinement of grains and the stress-induced Ce-PSZ phase transformation. This research provides a novel method for the preparation of molybdenum alloys with high fracture toughness and elongation.

Boosted mechanical properties of sintered MoLa alloys with ultrafine-grains by the nanostructuring of secondary phase

Dezhi Wang,Yao Lu,Xinli Liu,Bohua Duan,Zhuangzhi Wu

The secondary phase particles of La 2 O 3 play a crucial role in the determination of the yield strength over MoLa alloys, but few work focuses on their intrinsic modulation of shape and size. Herein, a nanostructuring strategy of the secondary phase particles is proposed to enhance the mechanical performances of MoLa alloys, in which the shape and size effects of secondary phase particles have been discussed. Moreover, the strengthening mechanism is also analyzed. It is found that the La 2 O 3 nanospheres with a small size of 84 nm exhibit the best strengthening ability, leading to a high yield strength of 765 MPa in the sintered state. Smaller particles are easily involved into the Mo matrix interior to be intragranular, which are beneficial for the further strengthening. The strengthening contributions are quantitatively calculated, providing a predicted yield strength value, which is in good agreement with the measured one.

High throughput preparation of Ni–Mo alloy thin films as efficient bifunctional electrocatalysts for water splitting

Jiameng Sun,Bin Yu,Fuquan Tan,Wanfeng Yang,Guanhua Cheng,Zhonghua Zhang

The synthesis of cost-effective and high-performance electrocatalysts for water splitting is the main challenge in electrochemical hydrogen production . In this study, we adopted a high throughput method to prepare bi-metallic catalysts for oxygen/hydrogen evolution reactions (OER/HER). A series of Ni–Mo alloy electrocatalysts with tunable compositions were prepared by a simple co-sputtering method. Due to the synergistic effect between Ni and Mo, the intrinsic electrocatalytic activity of the Ni–Mo alloy electrocatalysts is improved, resulting in excellent HER and OER performances. The Ni 90 Mo 10 electrocatalyst shows the best HER performance, with an extremely low overpotential of 58 mV at 10 mA cm −2 , while the Ni 40 Mo 60 electrocatalyst shows an overpotential of 258 mV at 10 mA cm −2 in OER. More significantly, the assembled Ni 40 Mo 60 //Ni 90 Mo 10 electrolyzer only needs a cell voltage of 1.57 V to reach 10 mA cm −2 for overall water splitting .

Nanostructured oxide dispersion strengthened Mo alloys from Mo nanopowder doping with oxide nanoparticles

Guo-Dong Sun,Guo-Hua Zhang,Kuo-Chih Chou

A simple and efficient pathway was developed to synthesize ultrafine grained oxide dispersion strengthened (ODS) Mo alloys doped with nano-scaled oxide particles. Firstly, dispersed La(NO 3 ) 3 or Al(NO 3 ) 3 nanoparticles were introduced into commercial MoO 3 via a solution spraying method. Then, Mo nanopowders containing different amounts of oxides nanoparticles (La 2 O 3 (0%, 0.5%, 1% and 2%) or Al 2 O 3 (0.5%, 1%)) were successfully prepared by reducing the doped MoO 3 with carbon black at 600 °C and 1050 °C, and hydrogen at 800 °C. Due to the high sintering activity of prepared doped Mo nanopowder, after sintering in H 2 at 1300 °C for 3 h, the relative density of sintered products containing 0.5% La 2 O 3 or Al 2 O 3 reached to above 95.4%. Nanostructured ODS Mo alloys with Mo and La 2 O 3 (or Al 2 O 3 ) grain sizes of about 0.5 μm and 75 nm (or 50 nm for Al 2 O 3 ) were successfully prepared at around 1300 °C. The obtained nanostructured Mo-oxides alloys had much high hardness values. For the Mo-La 2 O 3 alloys, the highest value of hardness can reach to 338 HV (1% La 2 O 3 , Mo grain size, 0.51 μm; La 2 O 3 grain size, 71.3 nm; density, 93.0%), while the highest hardness of Mo-Al 2 O 3 alloys reached to 385 HV (1% Al 2 O 3 , Mo grain size, 0.55 μm; Al 2 O 3 grain size, 55.9 nm; density, 94.6%), which were much higher than the ODS-Mo alloys prepared from the traditional methods. This method could also have great potential for industrially producing nanostructured ODS Mo alloys and W alloys.

Electrocatalyst nanoarchitectonics with molybdenum-cobalt bimetallic alloy encapsulated in nitrogen-doped carbon for water splitting reaction

Riyue Ge,Juanjuan Huo,Ying Li,Ting Liao,Jiujun Zhang,Mingyuan Zhu,Tansir Ahamad,Sean Li,Hao Liu,Lingyan Feng,Wenxian Li

The rational construction of highly efficient electrocatalysts comprising multiple components with distinctive bifunctionalities is still a challenge for the practical application due to their sluggish kinetics for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Here, a series of cobalt-molybdenum alloy nanorods encapsulated in N-doped carbon shells (CoMo@NC) is synthesized via an in-situ carbonization - reduction method using CoMoO 4 as the precursor. The high conductivity, strain-induced effect, and synergistic interactions between N - doped carbon and bimetallic cores endow the optimized catalyst with outperforming catalytic performances for HER and OER in alkaline solution with low overpotentials (98 mV for HER and 336 mV for OER at 10 mA cm −2 ), as well as high durability. The overall water splitting device using the CoMo@NC sample achieved at 800 ℃ treatment (CoMo@NC-800) as bifunctional catalyst could possess a low voltage of 1.67 V to drive a current density of 10 mA cm −2 and high durability. Furthermore, density functional theory calculations reveal that the pyridinic-N atoms of graphene anchored on CoMo alloy nanoparticles can efficiently modulate the electronic structure to generate optimal free energy of hydrogen adsorption (−0.029 eV), suggesting excellent HER intrinsic activity. This work may provide a facile avenue to achieve multiple metallic alloy-based nanomaterials for boosting electrochemical water splitting performance.

A salt-baking ‘recipe’ of commercial nickel-molybdenum alloy foam for oxygen evolution catalysis in water splitting

Shaoli Mo,Hui Zhong,Fan Liu,Yang Tang,Syed Shoaib Ahmad Shah,Shu-Juan Bao

Ni-based metal foam holds promise as an electrochemical water-splitting catalyst, due to its low cost, acceptable catalytic activity and superior stability. However, its catalytic activity must be improved before it can be used as an energy-saving catalyst. Here, a traditional Chinese recipe, salt-baking, was employed to surface engineering of nickel-molybdenum alloy (NiMo) foam. During salt-baking, a thin layer of FeOOH nano-flowers was assembled on the NiMo foam surface then the resultant NiMo-Fe catalytic material was evaluated for its ability to support oxygen evolution reaction (OER) activity. The NiMo-Fe foam catalyst generated an electric current density of 100 mA cm −2 that required an overpotential of only 280 mV, thus demonstrating that its performance far exceeded that of the benchmark catalyst RuO 2 (375 mV). When employed as both the anode and cathode for use in alkaline water electrolysis, the NiMo-Fe foam generated a current density ( j ) output that was 3.5 times greater than that of NiMo. Thus, our proposed salt-baking method is a promising simple and environmentally friendly approach for surface engineering of metal foam for designing catalysts.

Low-temperature accelerated sintering of high-performance oxide dispersion strengthened ultrafine grained Mo alloy

Zhi Dong,Songhua Chen,Shaocun Liu,Zongqing Ma,Liming Yu

As a promising route to prepare ultrafine-grained or nanocrystalline materials, powder metallurgy has long been used to produce some metal materials with desirable microstructure. However, the challenges of rapid grain growth and torpid densification during this process always frustrate the endeavor. Especially, for the oxide dispersion strengthened (ODS) alloy, although grain growth is suppressed greatly by the traditional oxide addition, the densification of metal matrix is also hindered, especially at low temperature. To overcome such limitation, exploring a kind of oxide that can be used as both grain growth inhibitor and sintering accelerator for metal matrix will be significant. In this work, it is found that accelerated sintering can be achieved in Mo-ZrO 2 system at low temperature. The kinetic simulation results indicate that although the volume diffusion has been found to be the dominant sintering mechanism for Mo-ZrO 2 system, a significant contribution from grain boundary diffusion is also identified, which is the essential mechanism behind the accelerated sintering of this system at low temperature. Besides, the grain boundary migration also can be significantly restricted by the intergranular ZrO 2 particles. After sintering at only 1480 °C in the absence of external pressure assistance and subsequent hot forging , nanocrystalline microstructure with an average grain size of 480 nm can be obtained. The ZrO 2 second-phase particles are uniformly distributed at grain interior and grain boundaries, enhancing the recrystallization temperature and microstructural stability of metal matrix, which renders the prepared Mo-ZrO 2 alloy a stable high-strength performance characteristic even under high temperatures.

Pure pompon structured Co–Mo alloy electro-deposited from ethylene glycol solution and used as electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction

He Xinkuai,Guo Ruqing,Hu Zhousi,Zou Qingtian,Yang Jingjing,Wu Luye

The co-deposition behavior of Co(II) and Mo(VI) and Co–Mo electro-crystallization mechanism in ethylene glycol (EG) are recorded using cyclic voltammetry and chronoamperometry. These results indicate that the Co–Mo co-deposition is representative induced deposition; Co(II) species can facilitate Co–Mo co-deposition, inversely, Mo(VI) species can inhibit Co(II) reduction and the effect can be enhanced as Mo(VI) concentration increases. Additionally, Co–Mo co-deposition in EG takes place through an instantaneous nucleation and diffusion-controlled three-dimensional growth mechanism. Co–Mo deposits with various Mo contents and different microstructures can be obtained from the EG solution. SEM micrographs present that the Co–Mo deposits with 1.56 wt% Mo present a pure pompon microstructure. Benefiting from the composition engineering by alloying with Mo, as well as the simultaneous presence of a suitable pompon structure, Co–Mo deposits with 1.56 wt% exhibits prominent electrocatalytic durability and activity with a η 10 of 84 mV for HER in a 1.0 M KOH. Catalytic conversion of enzymatic hydrolysis lignin into cycloalkanes over a gamma-alumina supported nickel molybdenum alloy catalyst

Qingfeng Liu,Yunfei Bai,Hong Chen,Mengmeng Chen,Yushuai Sang,Kai Wu,Zewei Ma,Yiming Ma,Yongdan Li

The efficient depolymerization and hydrodeoxygenation of enzymatic hydrolysis lignin are achieved in cyclohexane solvents over a gamma-alumina supported nickel molybdenum alloy catalyst in a single step. Under initial 3 MPa hydrogen at 320 °C, the highest overall cycloalkane yield of 104.4 mg/g enzymatic hydrolysis lignin with 44.4 wt% selectivity of ethyl-cyclohexane was obtained. The reaction atmosphere and temperature have significant effects on enzymatic hydrolysis lignin conversion, product type and distribution. The conversion of enzymatic hydrolysis lignin was also investigated over different nickel and molybdenum-based catalysts, and the gamma-alumina supported nickel molybdenum alloy catalyst exhibited the highest activity among those catalysts. To reveal the reaction pathways of alkylphenol hydrodeoxygenation, 4-ethylphenol was tested as a model compound. Complete conversion of 4-ethylphenol into cycloalkanes was achieved. A two-step mechanism of 4-ethylphenol dihydroxylation – hydrogenation is proposed, in which the benzene ring saturation is deemed as the rate-determining step.

Superaerophobic Ultrathin Ni–Mo Alloy Nanosheet Array from In Situ Topotactic Reduction for Hydrogen Evolution Reaction

Qian Zhang,Pengsong Li,Daojin Zhou,Zheng Chang,Yun Kuang,Xiaoming Sun

Hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) has prospect to becoming clean and renewable technology for hydrogen production and Ni–Mo alloy is among the best HER catalysts in alkaline electrolytes. Here, an in situ topotactic reduction method to synthesize ultrathin 2D Ni–Mo alloy nanosheets for electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution is reported. Due to its ultrathin structure and tailored composition, the as-synthesized Ni–Mo alloy shows an overpotential of 35 mV to reach a current density of 10 mA cm −2 , along with a Tafel slope of 45 mV decade −1 , demonstrating a comparable intrinsic activity to state-of-art commercial Pt/C catalyst. Besides, the vertically aligned assemble structure of the 2D NiMo nanosheets on conductive substrate makes the electrode “superaerophobic,” thus leading to much faster bubble releasing during HER process and therefore shows faster mass transfer behavior at high current density as compared with drop drying Pt/C catalyst on the same substrate. Such in situ topotactic conversion finds a way to design and fabricate low-cost, earth-abundant non-noble metal based ultrathin 2D nanostructures for electrocatalytic issues.

NiMo solid-solution alloy porous nanofiber as outstanding hydrogen evolution electrocatalyst

Min Sun,Qing Ye,Lu Lin,Yufeng Wang,Zongmin Zheng,Fangfang Chen,Yongliang Cheng

Developing a high-efficiency hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) electrocatalyst for the large-scale production of hydrogen is essential but challenging. In this study, we used NiMo solid-solution alloy porous nanofibers to develop a robust HER electrocatalyst through electrospinning, oxidization, and high-temperature reduction treatment. In 1 M KOH electrolyte, the fabricated NiMo solid-solution alloy porous nanofibers exhibited higher HER activity than Ni nanofibers, which required a low overpotential of 69, 208, and 300 mV at 100, 500, and 1000 mA cm −2 , respectively, and had outstanding durability at 100 mA cm −2 over 60 h. We developed a promising candidate for a high-efficiency HER electrocatalyst, and our findings provided valuable information for fabricating highly robust alloy-based electrocatalysts.

Preparation of γ-Uranium-Molybdenum Alloys by Electrochemical Reduction of Solid Oxides in LiCl Molten Salt

Yu-Ke Zhong,Kui Liu,Ya-Lan Liu,Yue-Xiang Lu,Tai-Qi Yin,Lin Wang,Zhi-fang Chai,Wei-Qun Shi

Uranium-molybdenum (U-Mo) alloys especially the γ-U-Mo phase, with excellent irradiation performance at high temperatures, have been extensively studied as low-enriched-uranium candidate fuels for strengthening nuclear security and nonproliferation worldwide. Herein, we provide a facile method to successfully prepare the γ-U-Mo alloys (U-10Mo and U-8Mo) directly from oxide precursors via electro-reduction by constant cell voltage electrolysis in LiCl molten salt at 986 K. The reduction mechanism was elucidated through cyclic voltammetry using the metallic cavity electrode (MCE) combined with XRD, SEM and EDS characterizations toward the electrolysis products under different conditions. It was found that the reduction of mixed MoO3-UO2 oxides may take place in three steps. Firstly, MoO3 was reduced to Li4Mo5O12, and then Li4Mo5O12 was converted into Mo. Finally, the U-Mo alloys were formed due to the underpotential deposition of U on the pre-formed Mo. In addition, the effects of cell voltage, sintering temperature and mixture composition on the electrochemical reduction were investigated. The results found that the reduction rate increased with the augmentation of applied potential and the decrease of sintering temperature. Moreover, the favorable composition of the mixed precursor varied from 24 at% to 21at%. The reduction conversion rate was determined to be 93.7% by ICP and TGA.
