Tunable electronic structure and unique physicochemical properties have made transition metal phosphides (TMP) promising electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). However, limited stability under electrocatalytic conditions leads to rapid degradation of electrocatalytic performance. Therefore, constructing high performance phosphide catalysts enabling stable electro-catalysis, especially under alkaline conditions, is still challenging and in great urgency. In this study, cobalt-molybdenum-based phosphides (CoMoP) were rationally designed and synthesized through a two-step approach based on hydrothermal treatment and subsequent gas–solid reaction for the alkaline HER. This method enables the incorporation of mixed-valent states of Mo and the formation of nanorod-shaped porous structure, creating catalysts with enhanced active sites, low hydrolysis energy barrier, and optimized electronic properties. Due to the combined effect of these characteristics, the as-prepared CoMoP exhibit excellent electrocatalytic performance in HER, including excellent catalytic activity and high stability. Typically, the optimized sample CoMoP-2 (with Mo-Co feeding ratio of 1:2) provided a quite low overpotential of 89 mV for achieving 10 mA cm −2 , and good catalytic stability with no decent degradation in catalytic performance after 48 h continuous electrolysis. This study offers a facile and low-cost strategy for developing non-noble bimetallic electrocatalysts for effective and sustainable hydrogen evolution.

Molybdenum (Mo) based materials including its phosphides, carbides, nitrides , oxides, dichalcogenides and metallic alloys have received particular interest in recent years for sustainable hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) electrocatalysis . In this study, a novel Mo 2 C/MoP hybrid nanoparticle embedded N, P co-doped carbon nanofibers on carbon fiber paper (Mo 2 C-MoP NPC/CFP-800) is successfully prepared as a highly efficient hierarchical HER electrocatalyst . Benefitting from its structural advantages and compositional merits, this Mo 2 C-MoP NPC/CFP-800 electrocatalyst displays remarkable catalytic activity as well as excellent durability for HER. Only 85 and 146 mV overpotential is required to drive a HER current density of 10 mA cm −2 in acidic and alkaline solution, respectively. Remarkably, this electrocatalyst is also able to fulfill efficient HER even in seawater . Further, this work reveals that the Mo 2 C/MoP hybrid nanoparticle is superior to MoP nanoparticle under present system in HER electrocatalysis, which may offer valuable clues on further design and synthesis of HER electrocatalysts.
TiB 2 coatings can significantly enhance the high-temperature oxidation resistance of molybdenum, which would broaden the application range of molybdenum and alloys thereof. However, traditional methods for preparing TiB 2 coatings have disadvantages such as high equipment costs, complicated processes, and highly toxic gas emissions. This paper proposes an environmentally friendly method, which requires inexpensive equipment and simple processing, for preparing TiB 2 coating on molybdenum via electrophoretic deposition within Na 3 AlF 6 -based molten salts. The produced TiB 2 layer had an approximate thickness of 60 µm and exhibited high density, outstanding hardness (38.2 GPa) and robust adhesion strength (51 N). Additionally, high-temperature oxidation experiments revealed that, at 900°C, the TiB 2 coating provided effective protection to the molybdenum substrate against oxidation for 3 h. This result indicates that the TiB 2 coating prepared on molybdenum using molten salt electrophoretic deposition possesses good high-temperature oxidation resistance.
