In this study, MoO 2 was reduced by an unmixed carbon reduction method. Effects of reduction temperature, reduction time and distance between carbon and MoO 2 on the phase composition of reduction products were investigated. Results show that the phase change during the reduction process are MoO 2 →Mo 2 C→Mo with the increase of temperature. The reduced product is Mo 2 C when reduction temperature is 1000 °C and 1050 °C. Pure Mo can be obtained when the reduction temperature increases to 1100 °C. The reduced product changed from nearly spherical Mo particles with fine molybdenum dioxide particles attached on surface to polyhedron Mo particles with smooth surface when the distance between carbon and MoO 2 decreases from 10 mm to 1 mm. The reaction showed a similar change with the changes of the reaction time. The difference is that there will be residual Mo 2 C in reduced product when reduction time was 1 h. This method of carbon reduction can provide low carbon concentration by controlling the carbon distance to avoid the existence of molybdenum carbide in the product of molybdenum preparation.

The influences of different parameters, such as reaction temperature, yttrium (Y) content, and H 2 concentration, on the particle size and morphological structure of Mo powder prepared via the H 2 reduction of MoO 2 , were investigated in the work. TG, XRD , FE-SEM, laser particle size analysis , model fitting, and orthogonal design experiment methods were adopted to analyze the reaction kinetic and reduction mechanism. The results showed that the optimum conditions for preparing ultrafine Mo powder were recognized as 1073 K, 1 mass% Y content, and a H 2 concentration of 0.000576 mol·cm −2 ·min −1 , which enabled the as-prepared Mo powder with a particle size as small as 107 nm. A new interfacial chemical reaction model with the consideration of reaction temperature, H 2 concentration, and sample thickness, was proposed to analyze the reaction kinetic. It was found that the curves predicted by the model agreed well with the experimental data, with the apparent activation energy extracted to be 94.686 kJ/mol. The effect of different individual parameter on the reaction rate and the possible reduction mechanism were also elucidated.

The hydrogen reduction of MoO 2 is a common method for preparing ultrafine molybdenum powder, which is an important basic material for manufacturing high-performance Mo-based alloys. However, its preparation parameters are usually hard to be controlled. To address this issue, the work conducted the parameter optimization research during the hydrogen reduction process with using central composite design method, and the influence of different parameters such as reaction temperature, yttrium content, and hydrogen flow rate, on the particle size and oxygen content of the prepared molybdenum powder were investigated. The findings showed that the particle size of the prepared molybdenum powder is gradually decreased with the increase of reaction temperature and yttrium content, while gradually increased with the increase of hydrogen flow rate. The oxygen content of the prepared molybdenum powder is gradually decreased with the increase of reaction temperature and hydrogen flow rate, while gradually increased with the increase of yttrium content. Reaction temperature and yttrium content have significant interactions on the particle size and oxygen content are also concluded, and their respective regression model equations are obtained. The result also demonstrated that the particle size and oxygen content of the prepared molybdenum powder had a certain contradictory relationship. Through the comprehensive analysis, the optimal parameters for preparing ultrafine molybdenum powder with a low oxygen content are deduced, that is, reaction temperature: 1200 K, yttrium content: 0.1 mass%, and hydrogen flow rate: 1000 mL/min. Under the conditions, the average particle size and oxygen content of the prepared molybdenum powder are 320 nm and 0.456 mass%, respectively.

A traditional preparation process of Mo powder is generally time-consuming and leads to coarse particles. In this work, we propose a short-flow strategy, in which the intermediate product of MoO2 is prepared by a one-step self-reduction method in air instead of a mixture of decomposition and hydrogen reduction processes. And the reaction mechanism of self-reduction is investigated and the consequent sintering performance of Mo powder is also compared with the traditional one. The obtained results demonstrate that the finally synthesized Mo–La2O3 powder prepared by the self-reduction strategy are spherical with an average particle size of 2.03 μm, exhibiting an excellent sintering performance with a relative density of 95.3% and a hardness of 260.6 (HV), better than those by a traditional one (93.4% and 232.4 (HV)), which can be attributed to smaller particle size and better shapes. This work provides a new route for the synthesis of Mo–La2O3 powder, indicating a possible industrial application.

To address the disadvantage of poor degradation effect of Fe 2+ /peroxydisulfate (PDS) system, a co-catalyst was introduced in this study to construct a molybdenum (Mo)/Fe 2+ /PDS system for the degradation of Acid Orange 7 (AO7), and the degradation rate could reach 95.67%. The effects of different parameters (initial pH, Fe 2+ concentration, etc.) on the degradation effect of AO7 in this system were investigated, and the optimal degradation conditions were obtained by combining cost analysis. Cycling experiments showed that Mo had good stability. The co-catalytic mechanism of Mo powder was determined using X-Ray Diffraction, Scanning Electron Microscope, and X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy. The effects of different inorganic anions on AO7 were discussed: Cl − and NO 3 − had little effect on degradation, while SO 4 2− and HCO 3 − both inhibited the removal of AO7 from the system to different degrees, with HCO 3 − showing a greater inhibition than SO 4 2− . The main active radicals were identified as sulfate radical (SO 4 ·− ) and hydroxyl radical (·OH). In addition, intermediates were identified, and the attack sites were determined by combining the highest occupied molecular orbital/lowest unoccupied molecular orbital energy levels and the Fukui index to hypothesize the degradation pathways. Toxicity indicators such as the mutagenicity of AO7 and intermediates were evaluated, and the overall trend of toxicity was decreasing. This study is expected to provide an efficient treatment process for dye wastewater.

Mo 2 FeB 2 powders with different Mo/B atomic ratios (0.9, 1.0, 1.1) were first prepared under vacuum condition using different-sized Mo powder, as well as FeB and B 4 C powders as raw materials. Based on the prepared Mo 2 FeB 2 powders, Mo 2 FeB 2 -based cermets were synthesized at different sintering temperatures. Results indicated the morphology of the hard phase was closely related to the Mo/B atomic ratio. As the Mo/B atomic ratio increased, the degree of anisotropy of the hard phase decreased significantly, and its grain morphology gradually evolved from elongated to nearly equiaxed shape. When the sintering temperature was 1200 °C, the incomplete diffusion of the liquid phase led to the occurrence of “liquid-filled lakes” in some samples, while this phenomenon became weakened after the temperature was increased. The microstructure uniformity was optimal when Mo/B = 0.9, with the hardness of 1227 HV 30 ; while the fracture toughness and transverse fracture strength were optimal when Mo/B = 1.1, reaching 23.8 MPa m 1/2 and 2125.9 MPa, respectively. Annealing twins were observed in the γ-Fe binder phase of sample D, which effectively improved the fracture toughness of the cermet by altering the crystallographic orientation of the binder phase. The cermets prepared from ultrafine Mo powders exhibited better mechanical properties due to grain refinement and low porosity.

To conquer the challenges in conventional electro-Fenton (EF) such as catalyst deactivation and expensive modified cathode material , commercial molybdenum powder (Mo) is firstly applied as co-catalyst in GACSS (the cathode fabricated by granular active carbon wrapped with stainless steel mesh) EF process for organic contaminants degradation. The intermittent energy saving system is proved to enhance the co-catalytic performance, without external O 2 aeration, extra catalyst addition and pH adjusting. Optimal parameters are 50 mA applied current, 0.15 g/L Mo and 10 min on-10 min off power frequency in intermittent Mo-GACSS system, where 94.03% Rhodamine B (RhB) removal and 0.0467 min −1 degradation rate constant in 60 min is remarkable than other systems. Electron spin resonance (ESR) and quenching experiment confirm the major dominant radicals are superoxide radical (·O 2 − ) and singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ), which originate from Fe 2+ catalyzing and active site on Mo surface. Furthermore, the long-term consecutive experiments and characterization analysis are investigated to prove the stability of Mo-GACSS system. Various contaminants removal and electric energy consumption evaluation confirm the superiority of wide application and cost-effectiveness. The study combines co-catalyst Mo and low-cost GACSS to provide new perspective in practical organic wastewater treatment to reduce energy consumption.

Here, we constructed S-scheme CdIn 2 S 4 /MoO 3-x (CISMO) photothermal catalyst with interface Mo-S bond for efficient overall water splitting. As expected, hydrogen (H 2 ) and oxygen (O 2 ) evolution rates of the optimized CISMO reached 554.71 and 277.88 μmol·g −1 ·h −1 , respectively, far higher than that of CdIn 2 S 4 (71.78 and 34.45 μmol·g −1 ·h −1 ) and MoO 3-x (0 and 21.83 μmol·g −1 ·h −1 ). Mechanism analysis revealed that the photogenerated carrier transfer followed an S-scheme route. More importantly, the photocatalytic performance of CdIn 2 S 4 /MoO 3-x was highly relevant with the oxygen vacancies (Ovs) in pristine MoO 3-x . In S-rich environment, the Ovs could be imbedded by sulfur (S) for the formation of interface Mo-S bond during CISMO fabrication. Interface Mo-S bridge facilitated the photogenerated carriers transfer between CdIn 2 S 4 and MoO 3-x . Moreover, the metal-free localized surface plasmon resonance effect, originating from the residual Ovs in CdIn 2 S 4 /MoO 3-x , could further enhance the water splitting performance through photothermal conversion. This work shed light on controllable interface chemical bond formation in heterojunction photocatalysts to signally promote the photocatalytic performance.

Efficient oxidative desulfurization (ODS) of aromatic sulfur compounds under mild and green conditions remains a major challenge due to the limited activation ability of molecular oxygen and poor stability of traditional catalysts. In this work, a series of HPMo@MIL-100 catalysts were synthesized for ODS of fuel oils using molecular oxygen as a green oxidant. The introduction of HPMo into the MIL-100 framework not only improved the catalytic performance but also significantly regulated the electronic environment of the Fe active centers. Structural and electronic characterizations confirmed that HPMo incorporation decreased crystallinity, increased surface defects, and facilitated electron transfer within the framework. Detailed experiments identified superoxide radicals as the dominant reactive species, efficiently generated under the synergistic effect of HPMo and MIL-100. The optimized catalyst, HPMo@MIL-100–2, achieved complete removal of aromatic sulfides within 3 h at 120 °C and the aromatic sulfides were selectively conversed to corresponding sulfones. In addition, the catalyst demonstrated excellent recyclability, which can be reused 9 times without significant decrease in ODS performance. Furthermore, a desulfurization efficiency of 95.7 % was achieved to real FCC diesel, highlighting the catalyst’s potential for industrial application. This study provides an effective strategy for tuning MOF catalytic systems through electron modulation, enabling highly efficient, selective, and recyclable ODS performance under mild conditions.

Developing high-activity electrocatalysts is crucial for the sustainable hydrogen production. This study presents a scalable strategy that combines arc-melted high-entropy alloy (HEA) synthesis with selective acid etching to create a superior catalyst for alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). The designed Nb 30 Mo 25 V 20 Pt 15 Ir 10 HEA undergoes controlled etching, which selectively removes specific elements to construct a highly active surface with exposing and stabilizing Pt/Ir active sites. The optimized catalyst demonstrates exceptional performance, achieving an ultralow overpotential of 24 mV at 10 mA cm −2 , a Tafel slope of 35.6 mV dec −1 , and remarkable stability in 1.0 M KOH electrolyte. More importantly, it exhibits a superior precious metal mass activity of 0.081 A mg −1 Pt + Ir and a high turnover frequency of 1.14 s −1 at 100 mV, surpassing the commercial Pt/C. Experimental characterization and DFT calculations reveal a synergistic multisite mechanism where Pt sites facilitate optimal H∗ adsorption while Mo–Ir bridge sites modulate surface OH∗ interaction, collectively enhancing the reaction kinetics. This work provides new insights into designing high-performance, cost-effective electrocatalysts through rational HEA engineering and post-synthetic surface modification.

Adopting compostable materials that return to nature akin to organisms can mitigate concerns regarding the ecological footprint associated with the widespread deployment of soft robots across various fields, including medicine, agriculture and environmental exploration. Nevertheless, current implementations are constrained by the lack of reliability of sustainable soft actuators, difficulties in achieving multifunctionality of biodegradable electronics, and uncertain eco-compatibility of by-products. Here we address these challenges by providing a framework that integrates sophisticated transient inorganic electronics with durable yet degradable elastomer (polyglycerol sebacate) and polyanhydride-based adhesive in compostable soft embodiments. Our soft electronic fingers withstand over 1,000,000 actuation cycles and feature 21 high-density electronic components that enable proprio-/exteroceptive sensing and environmental intervention. The high survival rates of oats germinated in soils containing feedstock composted from not only polymers but also electronic materials, such as Si, Mo and Mg, indicate that our robot is seamlessly integrated into the ecosystem. All these advances bridge the gap between sustainability and performance in soft robots.

MoO 3 has been recognized as a potential photocatalyst for photocatalytic ammonia synthesis from N 2 in sacrificial reagent assisted half-reaction system, but is lacking in both sluggish kinetics of N 2 reduction due to the absence of efficient active sites and low practicality originated from high cost sacrificial reagent. Herein, aiming to simultaneously bolster N 2 reduction reaction kinetics and improve practicality, oxygen vacancy-enriched MoO 3-x nanoplates was prepared as photocatalyst for green photocatalytic ammonia synthesis by using abundant cellulose in nature as the sacrificial reagent. Under light irradiation, MoO 3-x photocatalysts simultaneously achieve ammonia production and the conversion of cellulose into high-value chemicals, and the highest NH 3 generation achieves 21.4 μmol g -1 ·h -1 under 300 W Xe lamp irradiation in cellulose solution. The excellent photocatalytic activity of MoO 3-x can be ascribed to the positive role of oxygen vacancy, which provides abundant active sites for ammonia synthesis. Meanwhile, the oxygen vacancy induces the generation of Mo 5+ in MoO 3-x , which inhibits the reduction of MoO 3-x to water-soluble H x MoO 3 , resulting in the high structure stability of MoO 3-x . This work provides new insight for the development of defect-engineered photocatalysts for green ammonia synthesis coupled with sustainable cellulose valorization.
