Co-modification of graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) photocatalysts can maximally optimize their intrinsic photoelectric structures, but usually involves complex multistep reactions, and thus is challenging because structural collapse and active site decay usually happen due to the complex process, over-treatment or conflict of different modification strategies. In this work, potassium iodate (KIO3), an edible salt additive, was used as a critical waste-free modifier in the thermal polymerization of g-C3N4, leading to a fast and coordinated co-modification of g-C3N4 photocatalysts. The final g-CN-KIO3 photocatalyst demonstrated a superior and balanced optical absorption ability and semiconductor band structure. In visible-light-driven photocatalytic model tests, g-CN-KIO3 showed a 3.25 times higher Cr(VI) photoreduction rate and five orders of magnitude lower residual bacteria in a photocatalytic sterilization within 120 min compared with raw g-C3N4. The photocatalytic performance of g-CN-KIO3 also outperformed all of the controls without maximized K–I–O co-modification (CN-K, CN-I, CN-O, and CN-KI). Photocurrent and electrochemical impedance experiments suggest that the co-modified photocatalysts have a faster charge separation ability, which is attributed to the multiple K–I–O co-modifications inducing an optimized surface electronic structure and slower carrier recombination. This work provides a new way to simplify and coordinate complex multi-factor regulation of materials.

Perovskite light-emitting diodes (PeLEDs) are promising candidates used for superthin emissive displays with high resolution, high brightness, and wide color gamut, but the CsPbI3 nanocrystal (NC) based ones usually have an external quantum efficiency (EQE) of less than 20%, which needs further enhancement to minimize the gap between their counterparts. Herein, we propose to improve optical properties of the CsPbI3:Sr emissive layer (EML) by inserting an additional potassium iodide (KI) passivation layer between the hole transport layer and EML to increase the film quality, photoluminescence quantum yield, and thermal stability of the EML. The KI layer can also increase the carrier mobility to balance the charge injection in PeLEDs, leading to a reduction in Auger recombination and Joule heating. An interesting deep-red-emitting PeLED (λem = 687 nm) with a record EQE of 21.8% and a lifetime T50 of 69 min is obtained by applying the additional KI passivation layer. Moreover, a flexible PeLED consisting of the KI layer is also demonstrated to have a record EQE of 12.7%. These results indicate that the use of a functional KI layer is a feasible way to develop high-performance electroluminescent devices.

High-performance wide bandgap perovskite single-junction solar cells (PSCs) are the key elements for the fabrication of high-efficiency tandem solar cells. However, the development of wide bandgap PSCs is currently limited by pernicious interface contact and uncontrolled crystal evolution. In this work, the potassium iodide (KI) additive and solvent annealing method simultaneously are employed to control crystallization kinetics evolution of triple-cation hybrid halide wide bandgap perovskites. The interface is modified with phenethylammonium iodide (PEAI) to form 2D PEAI 2 PbI 4 layer to further enhance the electron collection efficiency and reduce non-radiative recombination caused by the defects trap between the perovskite and electron transport layer. As a result, the photovoltaic performance parameters of the PSCs devices for open-circuit voltage, short-circuit current , and fill factor could be increased from 1.14 V, 14.98 mA cm −2 , and 53% to 1.22 V, 17.65 mA cm −2 , and 73%, respectively, obtaining the impressive solar cell device with 15.7% power conversion efficiency. The improvement in photovoltaic performance should be attributed to the optimization of crystal evolution and management of interface contact. Therefore, this study provides a promising strategy for fabricating the high-performance wide bandgap PSCs.

Motivated by the need for self-disinfecting materials that can be used to reduce the surface transmission of harmful microbes to healthy hosts, here we prepared a photodynamic antimicrobial membrane comprised of electrospun cellulose diacetate (CA) microfibers into which the photosensitizer protoporphyrin IX (PpIX) was in situ embedded. The resultant porous PpIX-embedded CA (PpIX/CA) microfibrous membranes were prepared with two different photosensitizer loadings: 5 and 10 wt% PpIX with respect to CA (85 and 170 nmol PpIX/mg membrane, respectively). The singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) generated by the embedded photosensitizer was confirmed by electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopic studies through generation of the TEMPO radical, and its photooxidation efficiency was further investigated using potassium iodide as a model substrate. Antibacterial photodynamic inactivation studies showed that the PpIX/CA membrane achieved a 99.8% reduction in Gram-positive S . aureus after illumination (Xe lamp, 65 ± 5 mW/cm 2 , λ ≥ 420 nm; 30 min), with a lower level of reduction (86.6%) for Gram-negative E . coli . Potentiation with potassium iodide was found to be an effective way to further enhance the antimicrobial efficacy of the PpIX/CA microfibrous membrane, achieving 99.9999% (6 log units) inactivation of both S . aureus and E . coli in the presence of 25 and 100 mM KI, respectively. These findings indicate that the electrospun CA microfibrous membrane is an ideal matrix for a photosensitizer such as PpIX to be embedded and effectively sensitized upon visible light illumination, and its antimicrobial photodynamic inactivation efficiency could be strongly enhanced with the increased KI addition, showing a promising future for its use in pathogen transmission defensive materials.

Polygonatum sibiricum, famous for its physiological activities, is a popular Chinese food and also a traditional Chinese herb containing many carbohydrates as the main component. However, except the most reported polysaccharides, other detailed compositions of carbohydrates were still not clear. To verify the controversial existence of starch and investigate other components especially about oligosaccharides, we used iodine-potassium iodide colorimetric detection and enzymatic hydrolysis to determine starch. Then, oligosaccharides were analyzed by thin-layer chromatography (TLC), gel permeation chromatography (GPC), high-performance anion exchange chromatography with pulsed amperometric detection (HPAEC-PAD), and hydrophilic interaction chromatography-electrospray tandem mass spectrometry (HILIC-ESI-MS/MS). Results showed that the rhizome of Polygonatum sibiricum lacked starch, and fructo-oligosaccharides were the main component, accounting for about 28.95%. Oligosaccharides with degrees of polymerization above 10 were the most abundant components. This study clearly illustrated the unknown carbohydrate components of Polygonatum rhizome, promoting its functional value with new evidence.
