The study aimed at investigating the addition effects of P, K, and micronutrient fertilizers on the permeability of N-nutrient fertilizer urea through a representative polymer membrane, which is of great importance in polymer-coated compound fertilizer. Specifically, the permeability of urea through polystyrene membrane was determined experimentally at the nominal temperature of 298 K using the Ussing chamber method for fertilizer solutions of urea–water, urea–NaH 2 PO 4 –water, urea–Ca(H 2 PO 4 ) 2 –water, urea–KCl–water, and urea–NaCl–water. The experimental data showed that the addition effects of NaH 2 PO 4 , KCl, and NaCl on urea permeability were pronounced and could be promotion or suppression depending on the amounts added. The variation of urea permeability with additive concentration could be explained by the ‘solution–diffusion’ model, suggesting that the specific intermolecular and interionic interactions in the permeation solution were an important factor determining the permeability. Using the saturated urea–water solution as basis, the addition of saturated KCl increased the urea permeability by 2.5 times, while the addition of saturated Ca(H 2 PO 4 ) 2 and NaH 2 PO 4 decreased the permeability by 41% and 76%, respectively. © 2016 Curtin University of Technology and John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Picromerite is an important material for producing potash fertilizer. However, picromerite exhibited a poor recovery in the practical flotation process. In this study, we propose a strategy to improve the recovery by surface roughness modification with ultrasonic treatment. SEM images show that the surface morphology became rougher after ultrasonic treatment. Flotation tests demonstrate that the recovery of picromerite increased from the original 79.85% to 90.24% after ultrasonic treatment for 60 min. The mechanism of enhanced flotation was further analyzed with the help of adhesion-desorption force, surface wettability, collector adsorption, and XPS analysis, which indicated that ultrasonic treatment makes the surface more hydrophobic and exposed additional magnesium adsorption sites, thereby facilitating more effective reagent adsorption on the picromerite surface. The method of surface roughness modification by ultrasonic treatment proposed in this work provides a novel way to improve the flotation efficiency, which holds significant potential for enhancing the recovery of other similar soluble or semi-soluble minerals.

Multifunctional material for simultaneous pollutants removal and nutrient release is a novel, economical, and sustainable strategy to reuse agricultural wastewater and improve crop growth. Herein, we synthesized a multifunctional porous carbon by using β-cyclodextrin MOF (β-CD MOF) both as precursor and potassium source. The obtained carbon material (β-CD MOF-NPC) was equipped with microporous structure, large surface areas, and rich potassium element content, as determined by comprehensive characterization results. The batch adsorption experiments indicated β-CD MOF-NPC possessed efficient adsorptive removal ability of four amide herbicides from water, which might be through π–π interaction, hydrogen bonding, and electrostatic interaction. Besides, the β-CD MOF-NPC could effectively contribute to the growth of rice seedlings cultured in herbicide-contaminated wastewater by simultaneous adsorption of herbicides and release of potassium ions in the pot experiments. This study indicated β-CD MOF-NPC integrated the function of adsorbent and fertilizer, which is a promising material for sustainable and economical agriculture.

Penthiopyrad is a widely used chiral fungicide for controlling rust and Rhizoctonia diseases. Development of optically pure monomers is an important strategy to realize amount reduction and increment effects of penthiopyrad, wherein, fertilizers as the co-exiting nutrient supplement may alter the enantioselective residues of penthiopyrad in soil. In our study, influences of urea, phosphate, potash, NPK compound, organic granular, vermicompost and soya bean cake fertilizers on enantioselective persistence of penthiopyrad were fully evaluated. This study demonstrated that R -(−)-penthiopyrad dissipated faster than S -(+)-penthiopyrad during 120 days. High pH, available nitrogen, invertase activities and reduced available phosphorus, dehydrogenase , urease, catalase activities were situated to benefit removing the concentrations of penthiopyrad and weakening enantioselectivity in soil. With respect to the impact of different fertilizers on soil ecological indicators, vermicompost contributed to enhanced pH. Urea and compound fertilizer played an absolute advantage in promoting available nitrogen. All fertilizers didn't go against available phosphorus. Dehydrogenase responded negatively to phosphate, potash and organic fertilizers . Urea increased invertase, besides, it and compound fertilizer both diminished urease activity. The catalase activity was not activated by organic fertilizer. Based on all the findings, soil application of urea and phosphate fertilizers was recommended and considered as a better option to exhibit high efficiency for the dissipation of penthiopyrad. The combined environmental safety estimation can effectively guide the treatment of fertilization soils in line with the nutrition requirements and pollution regulation from penthiopyrad.
