Radioactive uranium removal plays a key role in energy development and environmental security. Sulfide nanoscale zero-valent iron (S-NZVI) has good antioxidant capacity, dispersibility and activity to eliminate U(VI) from wastewater, but the removal efficiency is limited. To improve the reduction and adsorption capacity of S-NZVI, through treating Fe 3+ solution by nitro-functionalized UiO-66 (UiO-66-NO 2 ) with high porosity, UiO-66-NO 2 enhanced S-NZVI adsorbent (S-NZVI/UiO-66) was prepared by liquid phase reduction method. The smaller size and larger specific surface area of S-NZVI/UiO-66 were confirmed by a variety of characterization techniques. Based on the excellent surface structure and reactivity, the U(VI) removal capacity of S-NZVI/UiO-66 (895 mg g −1 ) was much better than S-NZVI (434 mg g −1 ) and UiO-66-NO 2 (267 mg g −1 ). The impacts of pH, background ion strength, coexisting ions and different water environments on adsorption were studied via macroscopic batch experiments. The results showed that S-NZVI/UiO-66 could remove U(VI) adequately in a wide pH range. The removal rate was basically not affected by the concentration of NaNO 3 , demonstrating that the adsorption process of U(VI) on S-NZVI/UiO-66 tended to inner surface complexation. From XPS technique combined with the results of batch adsorption experiments, it was clear that the elimination mechanisms of U(VI) by S-NZVI/UiO-66 were mainly the physical adsorption, electrostatic attraction and complexation of UiO-66-NO 2 , and the reduction and complexation of S-NZVI. Therefore, it is believed that S-NZVI/UiO-66 has a great potential to be an excellent adsorbent in the field of the environment remediation. Moreover, S-NZVI/UiO-66 promises to be a novel nanomaterial for solving the problem of radionuclide contamination in practical environments.

Proper disposal of uranium-containing waste is of utmost importance for safeguarding the environment and human health. In this study, we proposed a novel zero-dimensional (0D)/two-dimensional (2D) nanocomposite material, nZVC/Ti 3 C 2 , composed of nano zero-valent copper (nZVC) nanoparticles loaded onto Ti 3 C 2 MXene nanoflakes, which was prepared using a simple in situ chemical reduction method. The uniform dispersion of 0D nZVC nanoparticles, with a size of approximately 5 nm, onto the 2D ultrathin Ti 3 C 2 MXene effectively prevented agglomeration and corrosion of nZVC. This unique configuration provided numerous adsorption sites for UO 2 2+ and facilitated a fascinating charge channel for reducing adsorbed UO 2 2+ into low-mobilized UO 2 by nZVC. Under the synergistic effect of Ti 3 C 2 MXene and nZVC, remarkable efficiency and selectivity of nZVC/Ti 3 C 2 for U (VI) removal were demonstrated, which exhibited an exceptional adsorption capacity of up to 360 mg/g, coupled with a high removal efficiency of 97.5 % and rapid kinetics. Importantly, the presence of humic acid did not significantly affect the U (VI) removal efficiency of the composite because of the reduction effect of nZVC. The underlying mechanism of U (VI) removal was elucidated, revealing the involvement of reductive immobilization in the form of UO 2 (as high as 73.6 %), inner-sphere surface complexation, and hydrolytic precipitation. This mechanism was dependent on the availability of active nZVC and the solution's pH. These findings highlight the potential of nZVC/Ti 3 C 2 composites as efficient decontaminants for radioactive wastewater , thus contributing to advancements in environmental remediation endeavors.

Photocatalytic technology plays a critical role in uranium extraction by converting soluble U(VI) into insoluble U(IV), underscoring the need to develop efficient catalysts for the photoreduction of U(VI) in aqueous environments. To address this challenge, researchers have developed core–shell MoO 3-X @ZnIn 2 S 4 (M@ZISn) photocatalysts, co-regulated through homometallic ion doping and heterojunction engineering, for U(VI) extraction. The M@ZIS 0.5 photocatalyst demonstrated outstanding performance, achieving a removal rate of 98.84 % and a removal capacity of 296.52 mg·g −1 within 90 min. Optical characterization revealed that its superior photocatalytic activity stems from three key factors: (1) Mo 5+ doping and heterojunction formation effectively suppressed the recombination of photogenerated electron-hole pairs, (2) the core–shell structure provided an efficient pathway for the transfer of photogenerated carriers, and (3) Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations confirmed that homometallic ion doping and heterojunction engineering optimized the semiconductor’s bandgap structure and enhanced its performance. Notably, when applied to spiked natural water samples (from the Yellow River, Salt Lake, and seawater), the M@ZIS 0.5 catalyst maintained a high removal rate of 78.82 %, demonstrating its potential for practical applications in real-world water systems.

Improper treatment of uranium wastewater from rare earth tailings can have detrimental effects on ecosystems and human health. Therefore, it is crucial to develop effective methods for uranium removal to ensure safe discharge. Herein, we present a novel hydrogel composite (GTA-2D MMT) synthesized through self-assembly, integrating gum tragacanth (GT) functionalized with amidoxime groups and exfoliated two-dimensional montmorillonite (2D MMT). This hydrogel capitalizes the high cation exchange capacity and abundant functional groups of 2D MMT to enhance mechanical strength while mitigating the excessive volume expansion commonly observed in polysaccharide-based hydrogels. The aluminum hydroxyl and oxygen atoms at the edges of 2D MMT interact with the amino group of the GT, restricting polymer chain mobility and improving structural stability. With an adsorption capacity of up to 441.32 mg g-1, GTA-2D MMT exhibits an excellent uranium removal efficiency of 94.6% in tailings wastewater while maintaining its structural integrity through multiple regeneration cycles. These results highlight the potential of GTA-2D MMT as a robust and eco-friendly adsorbent for uranium remediation, advancing the design of high-performance materials for wastewater treatment.

Herein, S-nZVI was synthesized to remove U(VI) from seawater. At a S/Fe ratio of 0.18 and pH of 5, adsorption of U(VI) reached equilibrium after 20 min with the removal rate of 97.93%. And the maximum adsorption capacity obtained by Langmuir isothermal model was 1177.09 mg/g. Moreover, S-nZVI exhibited selectivity in the presence of interfering ions, regeneration performance in 5 reuse cycles, and high removal efficiency in actual seawater. Mechanism investigations showed that UO 2 2+ uniformly adsorbed on S-nZVI surface was irreversibly reduced and generated UO 2 precipitates due to the electrons provided by S 2− , S 2 2− and Fe(II).

In this study, Fe 0 @Fe 3 O 4 was synthesized and used to remove U(VI) from groundwater. Different experimental conditions and cycling experiments were used to investigate the performance of Fe 0 @Fe 3 O 4 in the U(VI) removal, and the XRD, TEM, XPS and XANES techniques were employed to characterize the Fe 0 @Fe 3 O 4 . The results showed that the U(VI) removal efficiency of Fe 0 @Fe 3 O 4 was 48.5 mg/g that was higher than the sum of removal efficiency of Fe 0 and Fe 3 O 4 . The uranium on the surface of Fe 0 @Fe 3 O 4 mainly existed as U(IV), followed by U(VI) and U(V). The Fe 0 content decreased after reaction, while the Fe 3 O 4 content increased. Based on the results of experiments and characterization, the enhanced removal efficiency of Fe 0 @Fe 3 O 4 was attributed to the synergistic effect of Fe 0 and Fe 3 O 4 in which Fe 3 O 4 accelerated the Fe 0 corrosion that promoted the progressively formation of Fe(II) that promoted the reduction of adsorbed U(VI) to U(IV) and incorporated U(VI) to U(V). The performance of Fe 0 @Fe 3 O 4 at near-neutrality condition was better than at acidic and alkalic conditions. The chloride ions, sulfate ions and nitrate ions showed minor effect on the Fe 0 @Fe 3 O 4 performance, while carbonate ions exhibited significant inhibition. The metal cations showed different effect on the Fe 0 @Fe 3 O 4 performance. The removal efficiency of Fe 0 @Fe 3 O 4 decreased with the number of cycling experiment. Ionizing radiation could regenerate the used Fe 0 @Fe 3 O 4 . This study provides insight into the U(VI) removal by Fe 0 @Fe 3 O 4 in aqueous solution.

Background Zeolite imidazolium framework materials (ZIFs) had been extensively applied for U(VI) removal because of their superior structure, high porosity and large specific surface area. Nevertheless, ZIF-8 tended to accumulate in aqueous solution and it was hard to detach from water, resulting in a decrease in the removal performance. Therefore, it was necessary to conduct thermal modification treatment to solve the above problems. Methods The U(VI) removal capability of ZIF-8 was investigated in this study by subjecting it to various thermal modification temperatures (0 °C, 200 °C, 400 °C, 600 °C). The effect of thermal modification on the removal of U(VI) from ZIF-8 was investigated by a combination of macroscopic and microscopic experiments. Significant findings Macroscopic experiments revealed ZIF-8, ZIF-8-200, and ZIF-8-400 showed excellent removal efficiency, reaching reaction equilibrium rapidly (about 60 min). The adsorption kinetic and isotherm datum were more consistent with proposed second-order kinetic model and Langmuir model, confirming that removal process of U(VI) was mainly a single-molecule chemisorption reaction. The maximum removal amounts of ZIF-8, ZIF-8-200 and ZIF-8-400 were 470.5, 474.6 and 606.0 mg/g, respectively. Microscopic spectroscopic analysis revealed that there was a synergistic effect between the combination bonds in ZIF-8 during the adsorption reaction. Surface complexation and electrostatic interaction were the main mechanisms used by ZIF-8-400 to remove U(VI). This research offered theoretical guidance on the design of high-performance materials and the migration and transformation laws of radionuclides, which had significant theoretical significance for the future treatment of radioactive nuclides or other pollutants.

Herein, 3D alumina-doped magnesium oxide (Al2O3/MgO) aerogels were successfully prepared by a simple lyophilization–calcination method for the uranium (U(VI)) elimination from wastewater. Various batch experiments were used to testify that Al2O3/MgO aerogels exhibited remarkable removal performance for U(VI), especially Al2O3/MgO aerogels with Al2O3/MgO molar ratios of 1 : 1 (Al/Mg-3). Results showed that Al/Mg-3 could quickly reach the adsorption equilibrium within the contact time of 100 min, while the adsorption capacity of Al/Mg-3 for U(VI) could reach as high as 1046.9 mg g−1 at pH 6.0. The selectivity of Al/Mg-3 for U(VI) proved that Al/Mg-3 could be used to remove U(VI) from wastewater. The adsorption efficiency of Al/Mg-3 for U(VI) could still retain more than 92.5% after five cycles. Furthermore, the continuous U(VI) separation test results showed that the adsorption equilibrium time and adsorption efficiency of Al/Mg-3 could decrease to 40 min and increase to 99.7%, respectively. This work demonstrated that the remarkable U(VI) removal performance of Al/Mg-3 could make it an effective and reusable material for the adsorption of U(VI) from U(VI)-contained wastewater.

Photocatalytic removal of hexavalent uranium is an effective method for reducing radioactive uranium contamination in water. Herein, novel heterojunction catalysts, bismuth vanadate/hydrothermal carbon nitride (BiVO 4 /HCN), were synthesized and firstly successfully implemented for uranium removal. For example, the removal rate of U(VI) over 0.10BiVO 4 /HCN reached 98.5 % for the first time and more than 95.9 % for five consecutive cycles. Subsequent characterization analyzes confirmed that increased specific surface area, redshift of the absorption band, and efficient charge separation of the photogenerated electron-hole pairs collectively contributed to the improved photocatalytic performance. Noteworthily, free radical quenching and electron spin resonance spectroscopy results indicate that holes, photogenerated electrons, and superoxide radicals are the major active species for the photoreduction of U(VI). Finally, a possible photocatalytic mechanism of U(VI) removal was proposed.

Orange peel is an important resource in view of its low-cost and universal nature. A novel material (MnO 2 /orange peel carbon, MnO 2 /OPC) was yielded via a single step involving activation and in situ deposit. The feasibility of uranium removal using MnO 2 /OPC was tested by varying MnO 2 loading amount, pH, ionic strength , uranium initial concentration and temperature. 1.2MnO 2 /OPC yielded the most competitive uptake value as 246.3 mg g −1 . The pH beneficial for adsorption was 5.5. The adsorption taken the way of inner-sphere surface complexation and the process was an endothermic, entropy increasing and spontaneous process in nature. The work gave enlightening results for reusing orange peel as raw materials to produce a kind of scavenger materials of economy and effectivity in the field of treating radioactive aqueous solution.

Nano zero-valent iron (nZVI) has been widely reported to attract uranium (U(VI)) from wastewater through surface adsorption and reduction. However, surface oxidation and agglomeration of nZVI significantly limited the application of nZVI in removing U(VI) from wastewater. In this study, a novel porous nZVI/BC composite (Fe 1 Zn 3 -BC(900)) was synthesized via a one-step process coupling carbothermal reduction and ZnCl 2 activation. In this process, ferric chloride and zinc chloride were employed as the Fe and Zn precursors, while starch was utilized as the biochar precursor. Zn and Fe were formed in the carbothermal reduction process. The Zn was sacrificed through evaporation to increase the porosity, providing sufficient inner space for well-dispersing the nZVI, what could be wrapped and protected by the porous carbon. Besides, the galvanic cell between the nZVI-C interface was formed, accelerating the electron transfer for reduction of U(VI) into U(IV). As expected, the Fe 1 Zn 3 -BC(900) performed a high efficiency of 94.3% for separating the U(VI) in an initial concentration of 10 mg/L within 30 min, confirming the positive effect of ZnCl 2 sacrifice on enhancing separation of U(VI) onto the Fe 1 Zn 3 -BC(900). The high uranium removal efficiency can be attributed to the fact that the enhanced porosity resulting from Zn evaporation facilitates U(VI) adsorption. The reduction of U(VI) is further facilitated by the high dispersion of nZVI and the formation of Fe/C galvanic cell. Therefore, this work has developed a promising method to address the agglomeration of nZVI in the separation of U(VI) from wastewater, which provides a new idea for the subsequent efficient uranium removal.

Recently, how to improve the photocatalytic uranium removal performance of Graphite-phase carbon nitride (GCN) has always been a hot research topic. In this paper, a new strategy based on p-n junction and D-A structure is proposed to improve the photocatalytic performance. And as a result, a novel cyano modified photocatalytic material NC-GCN/Ag 2 O was designed and prepared for the reduction of U(VI). Interestingly, the material shows better adsorption performance for U(VI) in the dark treatment stage, and its removal of U(VI) is close to 70 % under the initial U(VI) concentration of 20 ppm and the solid–liquid ratio of 0.2 g/L. And the adsorption is in accordance with the Langmuir model and Pseudo second order model. After 30 min of illumination, the removal rate of U(VI) can reach 93.2 %, significantly higher than that of GCN (13.6 %) and NC-GCN 10 (37.7 %). It’s worth mentioning that photocatalytic reduction dominated the adsorption-reduction process for U(VI) removal after light exposure. In addition, after four cycles, the removal of U(VI) from the composite material decreased by only 5 % with no change in the crystal structure, i.e., it has good reusability and stability. Meanwhile, there was no significant interference with other ions except for Cu 2+ and V 5+ , which had a weak interference. Finally, a new mechanism for U(Ⅵ) reduction was proposed.
