Extracting uranium from water bodies is urgently needed whether from a waste nuclear resource utilization or a new energy exploration perspective. Herein, a novel robust hierarchical porous CAP membrane was fabricated from the nucleophilic condensation of phenolphthalein and 2,6-difluorobenzonitrile, followed by classical amidoximation and nonsolvent-induced phase separation (NIPS) methods. Fast uranium uptake kinetics with sorption equilibrium at a mere 12 h was demonstrated, and the uranium uptake capacity was found to be 499 mg g−1. The significant improvement in uranium enrichment performance was probably endowed by the outstanding hydrophilic surface and the hierarchical pores throughout the cross-sectional CAP membrane. Meanwhile, it was confirmed that the CAP molecular backbone may endure polymer degradation during amidoximation, and the amount of hydroxylamine used should be strictly controlled. The sorption mechanism was explored, and practical testing experimentally indicated the excellent desorption, reusability and selectivity properties of the CAP membrane. Overall, the easy processability, robustness and outstanding uranium sorption performance made the CAP membrane an ideal candidate for uranium enrichment from water bodies.

The phenomenon of rapid migration of photogenerated charges in natural photosynthetic systems has motivated the design of efficient photocatalysts capable of fast charge separation and efficient reaction kinetics for photocatalytically assisted enrichment and separation of uranium U(VI) in uranium wastewater. In this study, we developed a biomimetic photocatalytic system MnOx/NH2-UiO-66-rGO (M/UiO-rGO) with spatially separated dual cocatalysts. Among them, rGO functions to capture electrons and participates in reduction reactions, while MnOx captures holes and participates in oxidation reactions. The M/UiO-rGO catalyst exhibits excellent performance in photocatalytic reduction of uranium (reaching 91.8% in 1 h), and even under natural light conditions, it exhibits excellent uranium removal ability (80.4%). Using multispectral coupling technology, we further confirmed that enriched uranium undergoes a continuous and complex reaction process of “capture-reduction-free radical oxidation–nucleation–crystallization”. This work presents a viable strategy for designing biomimetic photocatalysts with efficient charge separation and rapid reaction kinetics for environmental purification purposes.

Purification of nuclear wastewater is urgently needed due to the radioactivity and toxicity of uranium. In this work, a novel modified polyamide acid membrane adsorbent (GPAA) was facilely fabricated via a Schiff base reaction between glutaraldehyde and an amino terminated polyamide acid oligomer (NPAA), followed by nonsolvent induced phase separation (NIPS) treatment at room temperature. The resultant GPAA membrane has a hydrophilic surface and a porous structure with a low water contact angle of 29°, and the GPAA membrane exhibited a high surface area of 105 m2 g−1 with a multi-scale mesoporous feature. Fast uranium adsorption dynamics of the GPAA membrane were observed with adsorption equilibrium at 16 h at 20 ppm uranium initial concentration. The maximum uranium adsorption capacity was found to be 413 mg g−1 with the chemisorption dominating the uranium enrichment process. Importantly, the resultant GPAA membrane demonstrated an ultrahigh uranium uptake of 350 mg g−1 in acidic aqueous solution (pH = 4), ascribing to the hydrophilic carboxyl and the low isoelectric point membrane surface. Meanwhile, the GPAA membrane manifested excellent acid and salt resistance and good selectivity towards common interfering ions. Furthermore, no apparent structural destruction was observed on the membrane after a three-cycle adsorption–desorption practice. Consequently, the sample preparation techniques and the outstanding adsorption performance made the GPAA membrane an ideal adsorbent candidate for uranium enrichment and separation, especially in acidic wastewater.

Advances in nuclear energy have led to steady accumulation of radioactive uranium wastewater, requiring the worldwide implementation of safe and efficient disposal methods. Adsorption has become a viable solution for purifying uranium-contaminated wastewater and recovering uranium resources due to its efficiency, environmental compatibility, and simplicity. This study utilized konjac glucomannan’s (KGM) gel properties to create a ZIF-8@KGM aerogel. Liquid nitrogen-induced rapid directional freezing combined with KGM’s exceptional plasticity yielded an aerogel with a uniform layered structure and directional channels. ZIF-8 (2-Methylimidazolezincsalt) particles are dispersed uniformly within the aerogel pores, significantly improving adsorption site accessibility. Compared with ZIF-8, the [email protected] aerogel achieved improved kinetics and adsorption capacity for uranium separation. After 90 min in a 200 mg/L acidic U(VI) solution, it achieved 96.4 % removal efficiency and a maximum capacity of 687.8 mg/g. Mechanistic studies revealed synergistic adsorption: KGM’s oxygen-containing functional groups coordinated with uranyl ions, together with the nitrogen-containing groups and hydroxyl Zn(Ⅱ) sites on ZIF-8 particles. Overall, this approach provides a promising strategy for uranium wastewater remediation that exhibits broader applicability in water treatment.

Developing an efficient uranium enrichment process for large-scale eluates from marine-tested fibers is crucial for filling the gap in the downstream of seawater uranium extraction. Alkaline elution of 10 kg real marine-tested fibers yielded 33 L of clear eluate after pretreatment, where uranium existed mainly as [UO 2 (CO 3 ) 2 ] 2− , [UO 2 (CO 3 ) 3 ] 4− , and [UO 2 (O 2 )(CO 3 ) 2 ] 4− species with a concentration of 11.98 mg/L, while magnesium concentration was up to 352.48 mg/L.MIP analysis selected D201 resin with more and larger pores, which showed better uranium adsorption due to a maximum electrostatic potential of 114.93 kcal/mol via simulation. 1 kg of D201 resin was used in a self-developed ion exchange equipment (maximum 100 L eluate per run) for concentration and purification. After 5 days of enrichment, 3 L of uranium concentrate was obtained, with uranium concentration increased to 121.48 mg/L and magnesium reduced to 14.9 mg/L. Ammonia water was added to the concentrate for precipitation, collecting 1112.45 mg of uranium product. The uranium precipitation rate was 99.27 %, and that of magnesium was only 31.1 %. The overall enrichment efficiency reached 93.13 % for uranium. ICP results showed the uranium mass fraction in the product was 33.1 %. TI-MS results indicated the U-235 abundance (≈0.72 %) was consistent with natural levels, and U-234 abundance (0.0064 %) was, slightly higher than natural, but still qualified it as natural uranium. This study provides an innovative enrichment process and theoretical support for efficient downstream uranium recovery in seawater uranium extraction.
