Sub-Nano Gaδ+ clusters confined by porous carbon spheres and coupled with SnS2 for efficient photocatalytic extraction of uranium

Yuehua Pan,Yingxue Pang,Hao Fu,Zhenyu Cai,Yuxiang Deng,Zhiwei Huang,Donglou Ren,Yuezhou Wei,Xinpeng Wang

Extracting uranium from uranium waste streams, particularly utilizing zero-carbon emission photochemistry, emerges as a promising and sustainable strategy. Herein, we construct an SS@Ga/PCS composite photocatalyst, consisting of SnS 2 nanosheets as well as a metal − support produced by confining sub-nano Ga δ+ clusters in the hollow porous carbon spheres (PCS). The Ga δ+ clusters are innovatively introduced as active sites with localized hole capability to simultaneously improve visible light response and carrier separation. In-situ characterizations and theoretical calculations reveal that Ga δ+ clusters induced metal-support interaction (MSI) by optimizing the electronic structure in the PCS host; In addition, Ga δ+ clusters act as plasma excitation elements to enhance the visible light responsiveness and carrier separation of SS@Ga/PCS. Ultimately, the inhomogeneous photocatalysis of uranium extraction achieved superior performance as compared to the pure components, corresponding to an encouraging removal rate of 97.87 % and a photo-extraction capacity of up to 1867.30 mg g −1 in 50 mL of uranium waste solution, as well as a wide-concentration window adaptability and excellent catalytic robustness. More significantly, this ingenious nano-confined strategy extends the design ideas of highly dispersed sub-nanometallic cluster co-catalysts and stimulates the study of the availability of abundant reactive active sites combined with monomer strong interactions, which provides a novel insight into the mechanism of photocatalytic uranium extraction.

Antimicrobial polymer-based zeolite imidazolate framework composite membranes for uranium extraction from wastewater and seawater

Huanhuan Tan,Yang Tang,Zewei Hou,Peipei Yang,Chuntai Liu,Zhipeng Xie,Songwei Li

Extraction uranium (VI) (U(VI)) from wastewater and seawater is highly important for environmental protection and life safety, but it remains a great challenge. In this work, the growth of the zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) nanoparticles on the tannic acid (TA)-3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) modified PVDF (TAP) membrane was designed to obtain an excellent U(VI) adsorbent. The zeolite imidazolate framework composite membrane (TAPP-ZIF-60) was prepared through polyethyleneimine (PEI) bridging strategy and temperature regulation strategy in solvothermal method. The coordination bond between PEI and ZIF-8 and the covalent bond between PEI and TAP are essential in forming stable composite membrane. TAPP-ZIF with different properties was synthesized through a temperature regulation process and the TAPP-ZIF prepared at 60 °C has the uniform morphology and good performance. The adsorption capacity of TAPP-ZIF-60 is 153.68 mg/g (C 0  = 95.01 mg/L and pH = 8.0) and water permeability is 5459 L m −2 h −1 bar −1 . After ten adsorption–desorption cycles, it is proved that TAPP-ZIF-60 has good repeatability and stability. In addition, the TAPP-ZIF-60 composites membrane has a good inhibitory effect on Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli . X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and density functional theory (DFT) analysis reveal that the coordination between TAPP-ZIF-60 and uranyl ions is the primary factor contributing to the high adsorption capacity.

Sunlight-induced uranium extraction with triazine-based carbon nitride as both photocatalyst and adsorbent

Shuang Liu,Zhe Wang,Yuexiang Lu,Hongpeng Li,Xianjie Chen,Guoyu Wei,Tong Wu,Daniel-James Maguire,Gang Ye,Jing Chen

Extracting uranium from high salinity seawater at ultralow concentrations would beneficially contribute to the sustainable utilization of nuclear energy, but it poses a significant challenge. Here we report a sunlight-driven photocatalysis-assisted extraction (SUPER) method by utilizing a bifunctional carbon nitride material, CN550, which has shown about a tenfold improvement in both adsorption capacity and photocatalytic activity compared to g-C 3 N 4 . Uranyl ions could be captured on the surface of CN550, and then deposited as metastudtite nanoparticles with light illumination. Compared with the pure physicochemical adsorption (PA) method, a tenfold higher uranium extraction capacity, up to 1556 mg g −1 , has been attained. Additionally, a 25 times improvement of the partition coefficient (PC), from 0.312 to 7.778 L g −1 , has also been achieved. In spiked real seawater, the extraction capacity can still achieve more than 1000 mg g −1 , and the SUPER method has been found to work under natural sunlight illumination as well.

Biochar decorated 2D/2D heterojunction with enhanced photocatalytic activity for uranium extraction

Jiacheng Zhang,Yue Wang,Lijuan Feng,Jun Zhang,Xuefeng Tian,Shaohui Huang,Yihui Yuan,Ning Wang

The acquisition of resources and treatment of pollution associated with uranium are of profound significance for the long-term sustainability of nuclear power. Photocatalytic technology offers a promising strategy for uranium extraction due to its ability to enhance the reaction kinetics and selectivity. However, developing photocatalysts with high-efficiency charge separation remains a significant challenge in uranium extraction. Herein, we devised and prepared a biochar decorated 2D/2D heterojunction, Bi 2 WO 6 /g-C 3 N 4 /BC, for uranium extraction from seawater and wastewater. Due to the layered structure and matched lattice of Bi 2 WO 6 and g-C 3 N 4 nanosheets, Bi 2 WO 6 /g-C 3 N 4 heterojunction can be easily fabricated, providing a large interface contact area and excellent charge transfer. The synergistic effect of biochar with the heterojunction further enhances light adsorption and promotes the separation of photogenerated electron-hole pairs. These features endow the Bi 2 WO 6 /g-C 3 N 4 /BC composite with a suitable bandgap and effective electronic conductivity for photocatalysis of uranium. The photocatalytic product was identified as the air-stabilized metastudtite (UO 2 )O 2 ·2H 2 O, which is formed by photogenerated e − and ·O 2 − during the photocatalysis process. As a result, Bi 2 WO 6 /g-C 3 N 4 /BC achieves a uranium capacity of 3.2 mg g −1 in natural seawater within 7 days and a uranium removal rate of 85.9 % in simulated nuclear wastewater. This study provides novel insights into the fabrication of highly efficient electronic conduction for uranium photocatalysts, which is significant for accelerating the development of uranium resource recovery and pollution treatment.

Facile and scalable synthesis of bio-based adsorbents from tannin for economical uranium extraction from seawater

Xingyu Fu,Minsi Shi,Dingyang Chen,Zixu Ren,Qing Bai,Rui Zhao

Extracting uranium from seawater through adsorption is an effective approach to ensure the sustainable development of nuclear energy. However, the currently developed adsorbents suffer from high cost or low adsorption efficiency. Herein, a low-cost and easily prepared bio-based adsorbent (TBAs) was synthesized from tannin via the phenol-aldehyde condensation. The preparation cost of TBAs was only $1.67 kg −1 , which was close to those of traditional low-cost adsorbents (e.g. activated carbons and zeolites). Moreover, TBAs had abundant active phenolic hydroxyl groups, which contributed to the high affinity toward uranyl ions. As a result, TBAs exhibited a high uptake of 897 mg g −1 in uranium spiked solution and good selectivity against common competing metal ions. Additionally, TBAs also displayed good reusability with an 8 % reduction in uranium adsorption capacity after twenty adsorption-desorption cycles. For practical uranium extraction from natural seawater, TBAs could be loaded on melamine foam to obtain macroscopic adsorbent (MF@TBAs). An extraction capacity of 4.2 mg g −1 from natural seawater within 16 days could be achieved, which surpassed most of reported bio-adsorbents. Significantly, the total economic cost of uranium extraction by MF@TBAs was $43.7–62.6 per kg of uranium, lower than that of currently available uranium adsorbents. All the above results indicate that TBAs have great potential in the field of economical uranium extraction from seawater.

Tailoring the electronic microenvironment of polymeric carbon nitride to accelerate reduction crystallization kinetics of uranium extraction from seawater

Peng Wang,Enmin Hu,Linzhen Wu,Junhui He,Yihao Wang,Zhenhong Ou,Fan Yang,Tao Chen,Wenkun Zhu

Photo-assisted uranium extraction from seawater is regarded as a potential technique for uranium resource recovery. Here, we report a polymeric carbon nitride (SCN-C 3 N 4 ) synthesized via a one-step calcination method, which combines cyano groups (-C≡N) modification and S atoms doping for efficient uranium extraction. By DFT calculations, we confirm that the integration of -C≡N modification and S atoms doping effectively reconstructed the charge distribution on the inside of the heptazine rings, forming a strong driving force for the migration of photogenerated electrons to the reactive sites. Accordingly, the reaction rate constant of SCN-C 3 N 4 ( k  = 0.00843 min −1 ) is 20.07 times higher than that of g-C 3 N 4 ( k  = 0.00042 min −1 ). Finally, the SCN-C 3 N 4 exhibits a remarkable uranium extraction capacity of 6.05 mg g −1 in natural seawater. Relying on various spectroscopic techniques, we identify the reaction process of uranium, which is captured by -C≡N, forming UO 2.34 crystallization under the joint action of electrons and free radicals. Furthermore, SCN-C 3 N 4 demonstrates excellent antibacterial and corrosion resistance, breaking the bottleneck of uranium extraction from marine biofouling. This work provides an example of designing novel polymeric carbon nitride materials for uranium extraction.

Enhanced uranium extraction from seawater using bifunctional-modified molecular sieves with high selectivity and adsorption capacity

Wen Guo,Zixin Lin,Kun Jiang,Hao Li,Xiangfeng Liang,Weizhong An,Huizhou Liu,Haiyan Luo,Haoyu Yao

The extraction of uranium from seawater is not only crucial from a strategic standpoint but also poses significant technical challenges. In this work, a series of novel bifunctionalized mesoporous silicas were prepared through a straightforward method, utilizing the structural characteristics of SBA-15 and synergistic effect of functional groups. The impact of pH value, initial uranium concentration, temperature, and duration on uranium adsorption was investigated through a series of batch experiments. The bifunctional modified SBA-15 demonstrated rapid uranium adsorption, which was a spontaneous endothermic reaction and conformed to the pseudo-second-order model. Thereinto, SBA-15 modified with aldoxime and amino group (SBA-15-SAO-N) exhibited the best uranium adsorption performance, with a maximum adsorption capacity of 701.85 mg·g −1 at 298 K and pH 6, an increase of 146 % compared to SBA-15-SAO. SBA-15-SAO-N exhibits excellent U/V selectivity (selectivity coefficient of 30) in the coexistence of U and V solutions, and it still maintains high adsorption capacity after five adsorption-desorption cycles. In actual seawater conditions, the adsorption capacity of SBA-15-SAO-N was 135.26 μg·g −1 . By combining DFT calculations and characterization, the coordination model and interaction energy between functional groups and uranyl were elucidated, revealing that introducing bifunctional groups can enhance the binding strength of adsorbents to uranium and form more stable complexes, thereby improving adsorption capacity and selectivity. These results indicate that bifunctional modified mesoporous silica offers a promising strategy for recovering uranium resources from seawater.

Insights into enhanced immobilization of uranyl carbonate from seawater by Fe-doped MXene

Min Wang,Shu Zhang,Qi Li,Yuanpeng Li,Enzhe Duan,Caimei Wen,Shujun Yu,Xiangxue Wang

Extracting uranium from seawater not only reduces radioactive contamination in seawater but also provides a source of uranium energy. However, due to the low concentration of uranium in seawater and the high salinity of seawater, extraction of uranium from seawater is challenging. In this work, we demonstrated a simple strategy to synthesize Fe-doped MXene (Fe@Ti 3 C 2 T x ) via a hydrothermal method and applied for uranium enrichment in seawater. The Fe@Ti 3 C 2 T x exhibited excellent adsorption performance in high salinity environments. The removal capacity of Fe@Ti 3 C 2 T x was determined to be 526.6 mg/g for UO 2 (CO 3 ) 2 2− at 328 K with quick reaction equilibrium (∼ 30 min). Kinetic and thermodynamic analyses of UO 2 (CO 3 ) 2 2− elimination process on Fe@Ti 3 C 2 T x surface revealed it to be a spontaneous and endothermic single-phase elimination process. FT-IR and XPS analyses further indicated that the removal mechanism of UO 2 (CO 3 ) 2 2− by Fe@Ti 3 C 2 T x was surface complexation. Our study suggests that Fe@Ti 3 C 2 T x can provide a feasible solution for uranium enrichment in seawater.

Uranium extraction by a bifunctional extractant dialkyl (2-(hydroxyamino)-2-oxoethyl) phosphonate

Mengjia Hu,Jingjing Xiao,Hongqing Wang,Chen Yao,Yaxin Wu,Zhihong Xiao,Changzhu Li

In this paper, a novel bifunctional molecule dialkyl (2-(hydroxyamino)-2-oxoethyl) phosphonate (DAHAOEP) containing both phosphoryl and hydroxamic groups was designed and synthesized, and used as a uranium extractant. The extraction properties of DAHAOEP were focused. Dihexyl (2-(hydroxyamino)-2-oxoethyl) phosphonate (DHHAOEP) was shown to have a better extraction effect on uranyl ions than dibutyl (2-(hydroxyamino)-2-oxoethyl) phosphonate (DBHAOEP) and diethyl (2-(hydroxyamino)-2-oxoethyl) phosphonate (DEHAOEP). Under the optimal extraction conditions, the extraction efficiency of DHHAOEP on uranyl ions could reach up to 98 %. Extraction saturation capacity, reusability and selectivity results indicated that the saturation capacity of DHHAOEP continuous extraction can reach 596 % after 10 times of extraction, DHHAOEP had been recycled more than 5 times, and exhibited a superior selectivity for uranyl ions. Slope method showed that DHHAOEP mainly coordinated with uranyl ions in a 1:2 coordination, i.e., monomolecular bidentate coordination M 2 L. FTIR and XPS analysis further confirmed that DHHAOEP combined with uranyl ions through it’s -C(=O)-NHOH and P = O groups to form a five-membered ring and P-O-U configuration, respectively.

Bipolar electrochemical uranium extraction from seawater with ultra-low cell voltage

Wang Yanjing,Wen Guobin,Liu Zhijuan,Thuy Nga Ta Thi,Dong Chung-Li,You Jie,Xie Chao,Du Shiqian,Zhang Fei,Liu Qie,Wei Jianrong,Cao Yu,Peng Xinda,Yuan Yahong,Wang Yanyong,Wang Shuangyin

Efficient uranium extraction from seawater has the potential to secure an abundant and reliable supply of nuclear fuel, providing affordable energy with minimized carbon emissions. Among the many extraction methods, the electrochemical route has emerged as a promising choice owing to its fast kinetics and materials regeneration. The major challenges facing this technology, however, lie in its high energy consumption, low extraction efficiency and poor selectivity. Here we show a bipolar electrochemical uranium extraction (EUE) system that combines cathodic direct electroreduction of uranium species and electrochemistry-assisted indirect uranium reduction at the anode. The EUE device operates at an ultra-low voltage of merely 0.6 V, exhibiting an efficiency of ~100% for sources with a wide range of uranium concentrations (1–100 ppm). This bipolar EUE system in natural seawater displays excellent uranium selectivity (above 85.3%), long-term stability (45 cycles), low energy consumption (1,944 kWh kg −1  U) and cost advantage (US$83.2 kg −1  U). This work opens an avenue to the electrochemical system design for sustainable recycling of different waste resources.

Polyamide reinforced alginate-based hydrogel for efficient uranium extraction from seawater

Long Huo,Feixiang Gao,Maokui Li,Junhang Wang,Xuanyu Li,Jianwei Bai,Haoyuan Wu,Hayinaer Azhati,Chunhong Zhang

The sustainable development of nuclear power hinges on accessing sufficient and stable uranium resources. Although the ocean contains abundant uranium, its low concentration and the presence of various interfering ions pose great challenges to extracting uranium from seawater. Herein, the sodium alginate-polyamidoxime/hyperbranched polyamide hydrogel spheres with high stability and adsorption capacity were developed. The gel spheres are molded by crosslinking sodium alginate with Ca 2+ and form a three-dimensional network structure through the covalent cross-linking of glutaraldehyde, which endows the hydrogel spheres with great stability and forms a pore structure. Accordingly, the unique spherical structure endows it with unparalleled recovery performance, enhancing its ability to efficiently recycle after uranium extraction. Adsorption experiments show that the maximum capacity reaches 537.8 mg·g −1 at a pH of 6. Notably, the hydrogel spheres can adsorb uranium over a larger pH range and maintain morphological stability, which makes them suitable for uranium recovery in complex situations like seawater. Furthermore, the adsorption capacity was successfully preserved in five adsorption–desorption cycles, with a high removal rate from 95.07 % to 87.37 %. The dynamic cycle experiment reveals that uranium extraction in real seawater can still reach 82.59 %, indicating a high potential for seawater applications.

Effect of ionic liquid on the extraction of uranium with pillar[5]arene-based phosphine oxide from nitric acid solutions

Quan Gan,Yimin Cai,Kuirong Fu,Lihua Yuan,Wen Feng

The extraction of U(VI) from aqueous nitric acid solutions with pillar[5]arene-based phosphine oxide (L) and [C8mim][NTf 2 ] ionic liquid dissolved in 1,2-dichloroethane was explored. A great positive impact in this system was observed. The effect of IL concentration in the organic phase and HNO 3 concentration in the aqueous phase is considered. The distribution ratios of U(VI) were significantly enhanced upon adding a small amount of ionic liquid as compared with organic diluent. The extraction system was also examined for its ability towards extraction of lanthanides and Th 4+ . The results revealed higher separation factors towards UO 2 2+ over Th 4+ in the presence of ionic liquid compared with organic diluent. Other factors such as C 8 mim + and NTf 2 − have also been considered. This extraction system has shorter equilibrium time as compared with in IL diluent. Stripping experiments showed almost quantitative back extraction of UO 2 2+ within two stages. With high selectivity towards UO 2 2+ and efficient back extraction, this new POP5A-ionic liquid-organic diluent system shows promise for future application of uranium recovery.
