The internal contamination of uranium poses severe health risks to both professionals and the public in case of nuclear accidents due to its chemo- and radiotoxicity. Although chelation therapy has been considered the only practical treatment in emergencies, current clinical chelators show only limited efficacy for uranium. Herein, a recently designed lacunary selenotungstate polyoxometalate (Se6W45) was demonstrated as an effective therapeutic agent. In this construct, the open site in Se6W45 provides a suitable uranium binding environment, resulting in the selective removal of uranium from kidneys (85.87%) and femurs (39.81%) with an extremely low ligand/metal ratio of only 4:1. The redox active sites in Se6W45, primarily the incorporated selenium, were able to reduce the intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) to normal levels in NRK-52E cells exposed to uranium. This approach overcomes the disadvantages of the excessive use of current chelating ligands in the range from 100- to 1000-folds, avoiding the consequential depletion of heterogeneous cations, dysfunction of proteins, and/or acid–base imbalance. More importantly, it provides a synergistic antidotal therapy for uranium in reducing radiation damage and chemical toxicity.

This study investigates the effects of nitrate exposure on the indigenous consortium mediated remediation of uranium-contaminated groundwater. Intermittent experiments reveal that high-nitrate concentrations hinder uranium reduction, whereas using glycerophosphate as carbon source, microbe could immobilize uranium by generating biomineralized precipitates with high crystallinity, and these precipitates exhibited better stability at high-nitrate concentration compared to those formed at low-nitrate condition. We also elucidated the mechanism of uranium removal by microorganisms under different conditions by analyzing changes in solution chemistry, products formed and microbial community structures. This work extends the scope for treating uranium-contaminated groundwater and is important for achieving long-term treatment of uranium contamination.

The addition of soil amendments to facilitate plant-based remediation of soil contaminated with radioactive nuclides is considered a promising approach. Here, we tested different levels of biochar to help clean uranium-contaminated soil in the potted plants. Adding 1% biochar had the best results in deactivating uranium, increasing soil enzyme activity, and promoting ryegrass growth. Microbiological and metabolomic analysis further revealed that 1 wt % biochar significantly enhanced the abundance of microorganisms such as Actinobacteriota and Myxococcota and accelerated the production of differential metabolites such as lipids and lipid-like molecules, organic acids and derivatives, and organic oxygen compounds. The analysis of biological and nonbiological interaction networks indicates that the coordinated interaction between bacteria, enzymes, and metabolites significantly improves the expression level of the ABC transporter’s metabolic pathway. This enhances the resistance of living cells to uranium and maintains system homeostasis under uranium stress. This study provides an example of the application of biochar-assisted phytoremediation and offers theoretical guidance for the remediation of soil contaminated with radioactive nuclides.

In this study, a composite leaching agent consisting of Na 2 CO 3 , NaHCO 3 , H 2 O 2 , and deep eutectic solvents was synthesized, and its composition and application conditions were optimized to mitigate soil contamination resulting from uranium mining. Laboratory and pilot field tests revealed that the use of this agent facilitated up to 92.6 % removal of uranium from contaminated soils. Analytical characterization through X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) revealed that CO 3 2- readily formed complexes with uranium, increasing its mobility and desorption from soil particles. The safety of the leaching process was confirmed through plant growth tests and enzyme activity assays. Moreover, the leaching strategy not only adheres to environmentally sustainable principles but also replenishes carbon and nitrogen in the soil, thereby aiding in the restoration of its functional use.

The decommissioning of uranium tailings (UMT) is usually accompanied by uranium (U) contamination in soil, which poses a serious threat to human health and ecological security. Therefore, the remediation of uranium pollution in soil is imminent from ecological and environmental points of view. In recent years, the use of biochar stabilizers to repair uranium tailings (UMT) soil has become a research hotspot. In this study, a novel phosphorus-modified bamboo biochar (PBC) cross-linked Mg–Al layered double-hydroxide composite (PBC@LDH) was prepared. The hyperaccumulator plant Indian mustard ( Brassica juncea L.) was selected as the test plant for outdoor pot experiments, and the stabilizers were added to the UMT soil at the dosage ratio of 15 g kg −1 , which verified the bioconcentrate and translocate of U and associated heavy metal Pb in the UMT soil by Indian mustard after stabilizer remediated. The results shown that, after 50 days of growth, compared with the untreated sample (CK), the Indian mustard in PBC@LDH treatment possessed a better growth and its biomass weight of whole plant was increased by 52.7%. Meanwhile, the bioconcentration factors (BF) of U and Pb for PBC@LDH treatment were significantly decreased by 73.4% and 34.2%, respectively; and the translocation factors (TF) were also commendable reduced by 15.1% and 2.4%, respectively. Furthermore, the Tessier available forms of U and Pb in rhizosphere soil showed a remarkably decrease compared with CK, which reached by 55.97% and 14.1% after PBC@LDH stabilization, respectively. Complexation, precipitation, and reduction of functional groups released by PBC@LDH with U and Pb described the immobilization mechanisms of biochar stabilizer preventing U and Pb enrichment in Indian mustard. As well as, the formation of U-containing vesicles was prevented by the precipitation of −OH functional groups with free U and Pb ions around the cell tissue fluids and vascular bundle structure of plant roots, thereby reducing the migration risk of toxic heavy metals to above-ground parts. In conclusion, this research demonstrates that the PBC@LDH stabilizer offers a potentially effective amendment for the remediation of U contaminated soil.

Priestia sp. WW1 was isolated from a uranium-contaminated mining soil and identified. The uranium removal characteristics and mechanism of Priestia sp. WW1 were investigated. The results showed that the removal efficiency of uranium decreased with the increase of initial uranium concentration. When the uranium initial concentration was 5 mg/L, the uranium removal efficiency achieved 92.1%. The increase of temperature could promote the uranium removal. Carbon source could affect the removal rate of uranium, which was the fastest when the methanol was used as carbon source. The solution pH had significant effect on the uranium removal efficiency, which reached the maximum under solution pH 5.0. The experimental results and FTIR as well as XPS demonstrated that Priestia sp. WW1 could remove uranium via both adsorption and reduction. The common chloride ions, sulfate ions, Mn(II) and Cu(II) enhanced the uranium removal, while Fe(III) depressed the uranium removal. The Priestia sp. WW1 could effectively remove the uranium in the actual mining groundwater, and the increase of initial biomass could improve the removal efficiency of uranium in the actual mining groundwater. This study provided a promising bacterium for uranium remediation in the groundwater.

The remediation of groundwater after in-situ leaching (ISL) for uranium mining has raised concerns worldwide. In this study, we evaluated the effectiveness of microbial induced carbonate precipitation (MICP) technique to treat uranium- contaminated groundwater containing carbonate for the first time. The effects of some key parameters on uranium (U) removal efficiency were explored. Moreover, the removal mechanism of U was investigated in-depth. The results show that the removal efficiency of U was significantly affected by initial pH and Ca 2+ concentration. Near neutral pH and Ca 2+ concentration of 0.15 mol/L is the most preferential for U removal. XRD data demonstrated that calcite was the main mineral formed in the process of MICP. Uranium is removed mainly due to co-precipitation with calcite. U removal efficiency of the real contaminated groundwater through MICP was 99% after mineralization for 5 d, indicating that MICP technique has great potential for the treatment of groundwater post neutral in-situ leaching.

Increasingly serious uranium pollution necessitates a new method for rapid qualitative and quantitative uranium detection. Some methods based on fluorescence spectroscopy and surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) have been reported to detect uranyl ions (UO 2 2+ ), the main species of uranium. However, various factors affect the fluorescence selectivity and SERS quantitative analysis. Herein we report on a composite material for a dual-mode fluorescence–SERS detection protocol for simultaneous quantitative and qualitative analysis of UO 2 2+ , based on a layer-by-layer assembly strategy, combining the advantages of the two complementary techniques. The composite material consists of a Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 core coated by gold nanoparticles (FA) via electrostatic adsorption. The CdTe quantum dots (CdTe QDs) outside the FA are linked with amide bonds to form a satellite Fe 3 O 4 -Au@CdTe nanostructure (FA-CdTe). The fluorescence signal of FA-CdTe was selectively quenched by UO 2 2+ , with a detection limit as low as 1.2 nM; the material was also used as a SERS substrate to detect the Raman mode of uranyl at 828 cm −1 . Furthermore, this method has been applied for UO 2 2+ detection in seawater, river water, and tap water, demonstrating the broad application prospects and providing novel development concepts.

In this study, a novel slow release carrier for the controlled release of citric acid (CA), hydroxypropyl chitosan-graft-carboxymethyl-β-cyclodextrin (HPCS-g-CMCD) was synthesized by the grafting reaction of carboxymethyl-β-cyclodextrin (CMCD) with hydroxypropyl chitosan (HPCS), and the structural characteristics of HPCS-g-CMCD were confirmed by FT-IR, TGA, and NMR. Based on HPCS- g -CMCD and CA, slow release citric acid (SRCA) was prepared by a spray drying method. HPCS- g -CMCD carrier has a better slow release performance for CA compared to HPCS and CMCD, and CA release mechanism was attributed to a Fickian diffusion. Furthermore, the release behavior of uranium in contaminated soil could be effectively controlled by SRCA. The effects of SRCA on improving the phytoremediation capacity in uranium-contaminated soil were investigated using Brassica juncea , which were grown in pots containing soil with uranium at 56 mg kg −1 . After 50 days of growth, 5 mmol kg −1 of CA, SRCA I, SRCA II, and SRCA III was applied, respectively. The results showed that slow release citric acid could enhance the uptake of uranium in Indian mustard. Uranium concentration in the root with SRCA I treatment was increased by 80.25% compared to the control, and the uranium removal efficiency of the SRCA I treatment was 1.66-fold greater than that of the control. Simultaneously, the leaching loss of uranium in SRCA I-treated soil was decreased by 37.35% compared to CA-treated soil. As a promising remediation strategy, SRCA-assisted phytoremediation may provide a kind of feasible technology with low leaching risk for remediation of uranium-contaminated soils.

In order to achieve the on-site rapid detection of trace uranium under excitation with visible light and avoid the harmful effect of toxic organic solvent to human body and organisms, in this work, a novel water-soluble, environmental-friendly and biocompatible aggregation-induced emission (AIE) fluorescence probe was fabricated by introducing the pyridine quaternary ammonium cation and amide group into the propeller structure of triphenylamine (TPA). And by creatively using bovine serum albumin (BSA) in PBS buffer as the sensitizing agent to replace the toxic organic solvent, the probe can emit intense red fluorescence under excitation with visible light (470 nm), exhibiting very low cytotoxicity and great anti-interference ability against large equivalent of different metal ions and anions over wide pH range. After further integration with the self-constructed portable fiber optical sensing system, the satisfying detection limit as low as 7.44 nM (1.77 ppb) can be achieved. The established method has been applied successfully for sensing uranium in complex real samples such as uranium leachate, seawater and cancer cells, demonstrating excellent analytical performance and great potential for in-situ rapid detection and timely evaluation of the uranium contamination in vivo and in field.
