The photoelectrochemical reduction of U(VI) is recognized as an economical and effective way to eliminate radioactive pollution. In this study, we construct a α-Fe2O3/TiO2 film electrode-based photoelectrochemical cell to remove U(VI) and recover uranium from aqueous solution. Citric acid and oxalic acid could act as hole scavengers, being favorable for the photocatalytic reduction of U(VI). In the presence of 0.5 mM citric acid and oxalic acid, the uranium removal capacity reached 70% and 58%, respectively, while 24% was achieved for the system in the absence of acid. The XRD, SEM, FT-IR and XPS results revealed that a proportion of U(IV) was also precipitated as surface associated metastudtite. These novel observations have significant implications for the behavior of uranium within engineered and natural environments.

The extraction of uranium from seawater is not only crucial from a strategic standpoint but also poses significant technical challenges. In this work, a series of novel bifunctionalized mesoporous silicas were prepared through a straightforward method, utilizing the structural characteristics of SBA-15 and synergistic effect of functional groups. The impact of pH value, initial uranium concentration, temperature, and duration on uranium adsorption was investigated through a series of batch experiments. The bifunctional modified SBA-15 demonstrated rapid uranium adsorption, which was a spontaneous endothermic reaction and conformed to the pseudo-second-order model. Thereinto, SBA-15 modified with aldoxime and amino group (SBA-15-SAO-N) exhibited the best uranium adsorption performance, with a maximum adsorption capacity of 701.85 mg·g −1 at 298 K and pH 6, an increase of 146 % compared to SBA-15-SAO. SBA-15-SAO-N exhibits excellent U/V selectivity (selectivity coefficient of 30) in the coexistence of U and V solutions, and it still maintains high adsorption capacity after five adsorption-desorption cycles. In actual seawater conditions, the adsorption capacity of SBA-15-SAO-N was 135.26 μg·g −1 . By combining DFT calculations and characterization, the coordination model and interaction energy between functional groups and uranyl were elucidated, revealing that introducing bifunctional groups can enhance the binding strength of adsorbents to uranium and form more stable complexes, thereby improving adsorption capacity and selectivity. These results indicate that bifunctional modified mesoporous silica offers a promising strategy for recovering uranium resources from seawater.

Photocatalytic removal of hexavalent uranium is an effective method for reducing radioactive uranium contamination in water. Herein, novel heterojunction catalysts, bismuth vanadate/hydrothermal carbon nitride (BiVO 4 /HCN), were synthesized and firstly successfully implemented for uranium removal. For example, the removal rate of U(VI) over 0.10BiVO 4 /HCN reached 98.5 % for the first time and more than 95.9 % for five consecutive cycles. Subsequent characterization analyzes confirmed that increased specific surface area, redshift of the absorption band, and efficient charge separation of the photogenerated electron-hole pairs collectively contributed to the improved photocatalytic performance. Noteworthily, free radical quenching and electron spin resonance spectroscopy results indicate that holes, photogenerated electrons, and superoxide radicals are the major active species for the photoreduction of U(VI). Finally, a possible photocatalytic mechanism of U(VI) removal was proposed.

Photocatalytic extraction of uranium from nuclear wastewater and seawater is a highly promising strategy to avoid environmental pollution and effectively recover uranium resources. Herein, we propose a novel strategy of photochemical for efficiently and high selectively extracting uranium from aqueous solution. The excited UO 2 2+ at a suitable pH range were utilized for initiating the formation of hydrogen peroxide, which then directly reacted with UO 2 2+ to form solid studtite (UO 2 )O 2 ∙4 H 2 O. This photochemically triggered extraction approach could remove ∼100.0% of UO 2 2+ from aqueous solution with U(VI) concentration of 10.0–200.0 ppm, and 62.7% of UO 2 2+ from U(VI)-spiked real seawater after 24 hrs-irradiation under visible light even without additional electron-donor agents. The highly selective and high extraction efficiency towards uranium ranged in extremely wide concentrations demonstrated the powerful application potential in both the removal of uranium from nuclear wastewater and the extraction of uranium from seawater. Developing an efficient uranium enrichment process for large-scale eluates from marine-tested fibers is crucial for filling the gap in the downstream of seawater uranium extraction. Alkaline elution of 10 kg real marine-tested fibers yielded 33 L of clear eluate after pretreatment, where uranium existed mainly as [UO 2 (CO 3 ) 2 ] 2− , [UO 2 (CO 3 ) 3 ] 4− , and [UO 2 (O 2 )(CO 3 ) 2 ] 4− species with a concentration of 11.98 mg/L, while magnesium concentration was up to 352.48 mg/L.MIP analysis selected D201 resin with more and larger pores, which showed better uranium adsorption due to a maximum electrostatic potential of 114.93 kcal/mol via simulation. 1 kg of D201 resin was used in a self-developed ion exchange equipment (maximum 100 L eluate per run) for concentration and purification. After 5 days of enrichment, 3 L of uranium concentrate was obtained, with uranium concentration increased to 121.48 mg/L and magnesium reduced to 14.9 mg/L. Ammonia water was added to the concentrate for precipitation, collecting 1112.45 mg of uranium product. The uranium precipitation rate was 99.27 %, and that of magnesium was only 31.1 %. The overall enrichment efficiency reached 93.13 % for uranium. ICP results showed the uranium mass fraction in the product was 33.1 %. TI-MS results indicated the U-235 abundance (≈0.72 %) was consistent with natural levels, and U-234 abundance (0.0064 %) was, slightly higher than natural, but still qualified it as natural uranium. This study provides an innovative enrichment process and theoretical support for efficient downstream uranium recovery in seawater uranium extraction.

This study investigated the modification of moso bamboo biochar with polyethyleneimine (PEI) for the efficient enrichment of U(VI) in aqueous solution. The alkali/acid treated biochars with amine groups (PEI-alkali-biochar or PEI-acid-biochar) were characterized by SEM , BET, TGA , FTIR and XPS. The effects of contact time, U(VI) concentration, pH and ionic strength on U(VI) adsorption by PEI-alkali/acid-biochar were studied. U(VI) adsorption process on PEI-alkali/acid-biochar obeys pseudo-second-order model. Intraparticle diffusion model was used to investigate the controlled factors of the adsorption process. The fitting of Langmuir model gives the maximum adsorption capacities of 212.7 mg/g for PEI-alkali-biochar and 185.6 mg/g for PEI-acid-biochar, which are almost 9–10 times higher than that of pristine biochar (20.1 mg/g). The thermodynamic parameters illustrate that U(VI) adsorption on PEI-alkali/acid-biochar is an exothermic and spontaneous process. The FTIR and XPS analyses imply that U(VI) adsorption by PEI-alkali/acid-biochar is mainly controlled by complexation between U(VI) and amine groups. PEI-alkali/acid-biochar could be considered as a low-cost and outstanding material for U(VI) removal from radionuclide wastewater in practical application.

A novel kind of graphene oxide-based (GO-based) adsorbent was successfully prepared by chemical modification with cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (C16TAB) and phytic acid (PA) for adsorbing uranium (U(VI)). A close relationship between PA and GO interlayer spacing was investigated; the optimal spacing was 3.88 Å with 4.5 mL PA. A series of adsorption experiments were carried out with the as-prepared product (denoted as GO–C16TAB–PA) to capture U(VI) ions. The adsorption capacity of the GO–C16TAB–PA adsorbent can reach 923 mg g−1 (298.15 K) with an excellent removal rate (∼90%), which demonstrates a 527% increment compared with that of pristine GO in the same environment (pH = 8, Co = 500 mg L−1). Meanwhile, the adsorption equilibrium time of GO–C16TAB–PA was shortened by 50% compared with that of pristine GO. In addition, the GO–C16TAB–PA adsorbent exhibited superior recyclability with a six-adsorption–desorption-cycle test. Finally, the fabricated GO–C16TAB–PA adsorbent exhibited excellent adsorption performance in simulated seawater, providing a theoretical guide and methodology for further seawater extraction of uranium(VI).

Plenty of uranium resources were consumed with the development of nuclear energy. Therefore, the effective collection of uranium resources has been received much focus. It is well known that the amount of uranium resources in the seawater is abundant. However, the extremely low concentration of U(VI) and complex environments pose are considerable challenges for the extraction of uranium. Herein, the polyethylenimine (PEI) and Guanidineacetic acid (GDAC) were covalently grafted onto the surface of the hemp fibers (HF) to prepare a novel 3D reticular anti-fouling green adsorption material. Subsequently, a series of adsorption batch experiments were performed to evaluate the performance of the adsorbent. The experimental results showed that the maximum adsorption capacity of HF-PEI-GDAC is 414.93 mg/g. Meanwhile, the adsorbent exhibited great adsorption properties in simulated seawater. In addition, the adsorbent still presents excellent resistance to the algae adhesion after 15 days. Therefore, the HF-PEI-GDAC can be considered as a highly promising adsorbent for the extraction of U(VI) from seawater.

The uranium(VI) (U(VI)) extraction from seawater was crucial for future energy problems such as increasingly depleted fossil fuels and serious environmental pollution , and it could improve the current situation of limited U(VI) reserves on land. In this study, the natural material bamboo strips (BS) were utilized due to the flexibility and richness of various functional groups, and the amidoximized bamboo strips (AOBS) could be directly prepared by a simple one-step method. The amidoximation of materials not only adjusted the optimal adsorption pH from 4 to 6, but also advanced the hydrophilicity, speeded up the reaction rate (adsorption equilibrium within 1 h, about 0.17 times of BS), and increased the adsorption capacity (q e = 268.41 mg g −1 at pH = 6, about 1.7 times of BS). Importantly, the AOBS maintained its initial stitchability through flexibility adjustment, and was woven into a macro-shaped adsorbent (AOBS-M). After being placed in the Yellow Sea basin for 30 days, approximately 44.75 g of crude U(VI) (U(VI) content = 40.45 mg) was obtained (q e = 0.97 mg g −1 ), and it showed the excellent selectivity for U(VI). The AOBS-M not only overcame the problem that the existing adsorption materials were difficult to achieve macroscopic large-area molding, but also realized the flexibility adjustment during the modification process by controlling the reaction conditions, and promoted the industrial development of U(VI) extraction from seawater.

In this work, Bi 2 O 3 doped horse manure-derived biochar was obtained by carbonizing the H 2 O 2 -modified horse manure loaded with bismuth nitrate under nitrogen atmosphere at 500 °C. The results showed that there was a sharp response between the as-prepared bismuth impregnated biochar and uranium(VI) species in solution, which resulted in a short equilibrium time (<80 min), a fast adsorption rate (about 5.0 mg/(g·min)), a high removal efficiency (93.9%) and a large adsorption capacity (516.5 mg/g) ( T = 298 K, pH = 4, C i = 10 mg/L and m/V = 0.1 g/L). Besides, the removal behavior of the bismuth impregnated biochar for uranium(VI) did not depend on the interfering ions and ion strength, except Al 3+ , Ca 2+ , CO 3 2− and PO 4 3− . These results indicated that the modified biochar might possess the potential of remediating the actual uranium(VI)-containing wastewater. Moreover, the interaction mechanism between Bi 2 O 3 doped biochar and uranium(VI) species was further explored. The results demonstrated that the enrichment of uranium(VI) on the surface of the as-prepared biochar was controlled by various factors, such as surface complexation, ion exchange, electrostatic attraction, precipitation and reduction, which facilitated the adsorption of uranium(VI) on the bismuth impregnated biochar.

In this paper, three antibioadhering materials with quaternary phosphonium salt-modified polyamidoxime (PAO-QPS) for uranium extraction from seawater were prepared using commercial polyacrylonitrile fiber as the base material by the ion-exchange method. Infrared spectroscopy and thermogravimetric analysis were used to verify the correctness of the structure and to test the thermal stability of the synthetic materials. Scanning electron microscopy was used to analyze the microscopic appearance of the material surface. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy was used to determine the composition of the surface elements before and after modification of the material and after adsorption of uranium. The uranium adsorption and biological adhesion resistance of the materials were tested. Polyamidoxime-modified hexyltriphenylphosphonium bromide (PAO-C6) was the best adsorption material among the three quaternary phosphonium salt-modified materials with different alkyl chains. The adsorption kinetic curve and adsorption isotherm were drawn according to the uranium adsorption results. The results showed that the adsorption time and temperature were positively correlated to the uranium adsorption capacity of PAO-C6. The maximum uranium adsorption capacity of PAO-C6 could reach 23.6 mg·g–1 in the simulated seawater with a uranium concentration of 3.3 mg·L–1. In addition, the inhibition rates of the material to Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus were 87.60 and 90.59%, respectively, and the inhibition rate against marine bacteria reached 80.61%, indicating that PAO-C6 has good antibioadhering properties. PAO-C6 was expected to be used for uranium extraction from seawater.

Extracting uranium from natural seawater is a huge challenge because of the complex environment of seawater and extremely low uranium concentration. In this work, amidoximized hydroxyapatite (AO-HAP) was prepared to capture uranium from seawater. The introduction of amidoxime group greatly improved the recognition ability of AO-HAP for uranium in neutral and weakly alkaline environment (pH = 7–8). The uptake process of AO-HAP for uranium was fitted by Langmuir and pseudo-second-order models, suggesting that the capture behavior of AO-HAP for uranium was a homogeneous chemisorption . The saturated uranium uptake capacity of AO-HAP was 865.3 mg g −1 from aqueous solution, which was better than most of other reported uranium extractants. More importantly, AO-HAP had good regeneration ability and excellent adsorption performance in natural seawater (6.25 mg g −1 in 30 days). In sum, AO-HAP is a highly potential candidate as adsorbent material for the efficient extraction of uranium from seawater.
