Ferrate(VI) pre-treatment and subsequent chlorination of blue-green algae: Quantification of disinfection byproducts

Feilong Dong,Jiaqi Liu,Cong Li,Qiufeng Lin,Tuqiao Zhang,Kejia Zhang,Virender K. Sharma

Algal organic matter (AOM) from seasonal algal blooms may be an important precursor of disinfection byproducts (DBPs) in drinking water. This paper presents the effect of ferrate(VI) treatment on two blue-green algae, Chlorella sp. and Pseudanabaena limnetica , in eutrophic water. The results demonstrated that Fe(VI) removed the algal cells by causing cell death, apoptosis, and lost integrity, and decreased AOM (in terms of total organic carbon) in water via oxidation and coagulation. Chlorination of the Fe(VI) pre-oxidized algal water samples generated halogenated DBPs (including trihalomethanes, haloacetic acids, haloketones, chloral hydrate, haloacetonitriles, and trichloronitromethane), but the concentrations of DBPs were lower than those formed in the chlorinated samples without pre-treatment by Fe(VI). Higher Fe(VI) dose, longer oxidation time, and alkaline pH were beneficial in controlling DBPs. In bromide-containing algal solutions, negligible amount of bromo-DBPs were generated in the Fe(VI) pre-oxidation, and halogenated DBPs were mainly formed in the subsequent chlorination.

Experimental insights and modeling innovations: Deciphering Fe(VI) oxidation in imidazole ionic liquids through QSAR and RFR

Beibei Li,Ruijuan Qu,Ting Wang,Ruixue Guo,Jie Tian,Shuyi Li,Mostafa R. Abukhadra,Rehab Khaled Mahmoud,Zunyao Wang

In this investigation, we conducted a detailed analysis of the oxidation of 16 imidazole ionic liquid variants by Fe(VI) under uniform experimental setups, thereby securing a dataset of second-order reaction rate constants ( k obs ). This methodology ensures superior data consistency and comparability over traditional methods that amalgamate disparate data from varied studies. Utilizing 16 chemical structural parameters obtained via Density Functional Theory (DFT) as descriptors, we developed a Quantitative Structure Activity Relationship (QSAR) model. Through rigorous correlation analysis, Principal Component Analysis (PCA), Multiple Linear Regression (MLR), and Applicability Domain (AD) evaluation, we identified a pronounced negative correlation between the molecular orbital gap energy ( E gap) and k obs . MLR analysis further underscored E gap as a pivotal predictive variable, with its lower values indicating heightened oxidative reactivity towards Fe(VI) in the ionic liquids, leading the QSAR model to achieve a predictive accuracy of 0.95. Furthermore, we integrated an advanced machine learning approach - Random Forest Regression (RFR), which adeptly highlighted the critical factors influencing the oxidation efficiency of imidazole ionic liquids by Fe(VI) through elaborate decision trees , feature importance assessment, Recursive Feature Elimination (RFE), and cross-validation strategies. The RFR model demonstrated a remarkable predictive performance of 0.98. Both QSAR and RFR models pinpointed E gap as a key descriptor significantly affecting oxidation efficiency, with the RFR model presenting lower root mean square errors , establishing it as a more reliable predictive tool. The application of the RFR model in this study significantly improved the model's stability and the intuitive display of key influencing factors, introducing promising advanced analytical tools to the field of environmental chemistry .

Oxidation of ethanethiol in aqueous alkaline solution by ferrate(VI): Kinetics, stoichiometry and mechanism

Jing Wang,Tong Zheng,Chen Cai,Yanxiang Zhang,Huiling Liu

The oxidation of ethanethiol (C 2 H 5 SH), as a representative odorous pollutant, by ferrate (Fe(VI)) in aqueous alkaline solution was investigated to understand its kinetics, stoichiometry, and reaction pathways. The reaction kinetics and fraction of different intermediates were found highly dependent on pH. The reaction behaved as a 5/2-order reaction in a pH range of 8.0–10.0, and a second-order reaction in a pH range of 10.5–12.0. The rate constants decreased with increased pH, and the speciation of Fe(VI) and C 2 H 5 SH during the reaction were further discussed. C 2 H 5 SH was finally oxidized to nonvolatile and odorless sulfonic acid (C 2 H 5 SO 3 H) with the intermediates of sulfinic acid (C 2 H 5 SO 2 H) and disulphide (C 2 H 5 SSC 2 H 5 ). A plausible mechanism involving two competing reactions for C 2 H 5 S radicals was proposed to explain the pH-dependent reaction order. In addition, kinetics and products of C 2 H 5 SH degradation by Fe(VI) were compared with other oxidants (O 3 , chlorine, ClO 2 , KMnO 4 , H 2 O 2 , and OH). Our results provided a deep understanding of C 2 H 5 SH degradation by Fe(VI) in aqueous alkaline solution.

Simultaneous removal of antibiotics and recovery of phosphate in urine by ferrate(VI)-peracetic acid: The critical role of iron species

Yufei Shi,Jiabin Chen,Yajie Qian,Tongcai Liu,Longlong Zhang,Shaoze Xiao,Liling Zhou,Ruicheng Ji,Yalei Zhang,Xuefei Zhou

Efficient treatment technologies for recovering phosphorus from human urine while simultaneously eliminating antibiotics are crucial due to the potential threats posed by co-existing antibiotics to public health and water quality. Herein, we systematically investigated the application and underlying mechanism of peracetic acid (PAA) and ferrate(VI) for urine treatment. The PAA-Fe(VI) system retained its rapidity and efficacy in degrading antibiotics in hydrolyzed urine. The results showed a strong selectivity of the PAA-Fe(VI) system towards contaminants with electron-rich moieties. The reactive iron species (Fe(V)/Fe(IV)) played a significant role in sulfamethoxazole (SMX) degradation by PAA-Fe(VI). Theoretical calculations revealed a preference for coordination between reactive iron species and O1 of PAA. The coordination led to a reduction in the energy gap compared to free iron, suggesting an enhancement in the stability and oxidation capacity of reactive iron species facilitated by PAA. Furthermore, toxicity analysis revealed a notable decrease in the toxicity of degradation products following treatment with the PAA-Fe(VI) process. Elemental analysis confirmed successful phosphorus loading onto the precipitation, primarily attributed to adsorptive interactions with in-situ formed Fe(III). Overall, this study presents a novel strategy for simultaneously eliminating antibiotics and recovering phosphorus resources from urine, thereby expanding the practical application of the PAA-Fe(VI) system in urine treatment.

Improvements of ferrate(VI) pretreatment on membrane flux and membrane rejection using cheap NaClO reagent

Haiyang He,Yulei Liu,Lu Wang,Wei Qiu,Dong Li,Zhicen Liu,Jun Ma

Ferrate(VI) pretreatment can effectively alleviate membrane fouling during the ultrafiltration (UF) process, while instability and high expenditure limit its application. This study discovered that the cheap NaClO reagent would improve the performance of ferrate(VI) pretreatment, i.e., establishing Fe(VI)/NaClO (FC) process. 20 μM of Fe(VI) group can increase J / J 0 from 0.323 to 0.391, while the optimization process of 20 μM Fe(VI)/4 μM NaClO [FC (5:1)] increased it to 0.491 at the end of cycle 1 filtration. Meanwhile, the reversible and irreversible membrane fouling resistance decreased by 50% and 56% in FC (5:1). This was attributed to the suppression of ferrate(VI) decomposing and in-situ formation of more dispersed ferric nanoparticles in FC process [730.33 nm in Fe(VI) and 606.80 nm in FC (5:1)] by applied NaClO. The rejection ratio of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) increased from 27.18% of Fe(VI) group to 40.34% of FC (5:1) due to the repulsive interaction amplification of acid-base (AB) interaction energy. That was derived from the hydrophilia promotion of the treated sample and the electrical property evolution of in-situ formed ferric nanoparticles by NaClO. It suggested that AB interaction energy, presenting repulsive interaction in membrane-foulants and foulants-foulants, was a major role in Fe(VI) group and FC process. There was no more side effect induced by FC pretreatment, which was confirmed by the result that FC caused no increase in the disinfection by-products (DBPs) formation potential. The present study provided insight into improving the effect of ferrate(VI) pretreatment without inducing side effect, and reduced the costs of ferrate(VI) pretreatment during the process of UF.

Enhanced purification of hospital wastewater by a novel ferrate(VI) flocs recycling process

Jie Li,Ye Du,En-Yu Zhao,Yanni Jiang,Zhongjuan Wang,Heng Zhang,Peng Zhou,ZhaoKun Xiong,Bo Lai

Traditional Fe(VI) treatment process does not fully utilize the fresh iron flocs. This study proposed a novel Fe(VI) flocs recycling process. The flocs were recycled into the front-end reactor and the flocculation effluent further reacted with Fe(VI). Compared with Fe(VI) alone, the COD Cr of the secondary effluent of hospital wastewater decreased from 74.9 to 59.4 mg/L and TP decreased from 0.36 to 0.10 mg/L at the dosage of 20 mg/L Fe(VI). However, the enhanced removal of NH 3 -N and TOC by the flocs recycling process is limited. The Fe(VI) flocs recycling process also strengthened the removal of luminescent bacterial acute toxicity, from 0.52 ± 0.01 in secondary effluent to 0.17 ± 0.01 mg-ZnSO 4 /L. Compared with polymeric ferric chloride and ferric chloride (FeCl 3 ), Fe(VI) showed the best performance on purifying wastewater in the flocs recycling process. Compared with FeCl 3 , the C O bond contents in flocs from Fe(VI) changed more obviously. Flocs from Fe(VI) have a smaller average particle size than those from FeCl 3 , which may result in better adsorption capacity of Fe(VI) flocs. In conclusion, the flocs recycling process not only taken full use of the Fe(III) flocs and reduced the iron sludge, but also strengthened the purification of the wastewater without additional Fe(VI) dosing.

Enhancing ferrate(VI) oxidation by ferrous iron for pretreating shale gas produced water and mitigating ultrafiltration membrane fouling

Dongshun Sai,Xiaoxiang Cheng,Peijie Li,Xinsheng Luo,Jin Wang,Haiqing Chang,Daoji Wu,Heng Liang

Substantial amounts of hazardous shale gas produced water (SGPW) were generated with the development of hydraulic fracturing and horizontal drilling technologies. While membrane technique has gained popularity for SGPW treatment, membrane fouling remains a significant obstacle. Herein, a novel pretreatment process of ferrate (Fe(VI)) oxidation enhanced by ferrous iron (Fe(II)) was suggested to mitigate ultrafiltration membrane fouling in the treatment of SGPW. Results indicated that Fe(II)/Fe(VI) (100/30 μM) pretreatment increased the terminal normalized flux from 0.18 to 0.47, while reducing the irreversible and reversible fouling resistances by 71.1 % and 83.6 %, respectively. Interfacial free energy assessment revealed that Fe(II)/Fe(VI) pretreatment significantly enhanced the repulsive forces between pollutants and the membrane. Furthermore, the water quality of SGPW was generally improved by Fe(II)/Fe(VI) treatment, in comparison with single Fe(VI) oxidation. The synergistic effect of Fe(II) and Fe(VI) facilitated pollutants aggregation and enhanced the conversion of organic contaminants. In general, the generated high-valent iron intermediates (Fe(IV)/Fe(V)) were key contributors to the synergistic process and prolonged the oxidation duration. Simultaneously, the formation of Fe(III) promoted the flocculation performance. This novel approach presents promise for effective SGPW treatment and membrane fouling mitigation.
