Microstructures and Properties of High Strength and Toughness Fe-Based Coatings Fabricated by Plasma Arc Deposition

Zhang Jian,Chen Hongxuan,Pang Xiaotong,Liu Shilong,Misra R. D. K.,Sun Junhao

Currently, surface coatings on agricultural machinery are crucial for extending service life. However, achieving coating strength and toughness remains a challenge. In this paper, two types of high-hardness iron-based coatings, referred as S1 and S2, were prepared by modulating the Mo/V ratio in the Fe-C-V-Mo-B system, and their microstructural evolution and property changes were investigated. The results show that the S1 coating primarily consist of martensitic matrix, spherical VC, blocky Mo 2 B, and a small amount of skeleton-like Mo 2 B. In contrast, the S2 coating consist of martensitic matrix, petal-like VC, and skeleton-like Mo 2 B. Compared with S1, the VC volume fraction in S2 increases by 6.5%, and the Mo 2 B volume fraction increases by 16.3%. The average microhardness of S1 and S2 coatings are 737 HV 0.5 and 954 HV 0.5 , respectively, indicating that the S2 coating exhibits a 22.7% higher microhardness compared with S1. The average friction coefficients of S1 and S2 coatings are 0.434 and 0.398, respectively. Furthermore, the wear loss of S2 coating is approximately half that of S1. The fracture toughness of S1 and S2 coatings are 51.9 MPa·m 1/2 and 51.7MPa·m 1/2 , respectively. Fracture analysis reveals that the skeleton-like eutectic structure in S2 can deflect cracks generated by impact, increase the length of propagation path, and improve the toughness of coating. It allows S2 coating to achieve high hardness and wear resistance, while maintaining toughness comparable to S1 coating. This study provides a theoretical basis for the design and development of iron-based coatings with high hardness, high abrasion resistance, and impact resistance for agricultural machinery.

Iron-based materials functionalized with carbon and phosphorus recovered from sludge enhanced the formation of stable minerals to passivate lead and chromium in wastewater and soil

Liyan Wang,Bojie Jia,Zedong Teng,Hao Cao,Yanli Miao,Huiyuan Guo,Tinggang Li

The bioaccumulation and toxicity of heavy metals are serious threats to human activities and ecological health. The exploitation of environmentally friendly passivated materials is major importance for the remediation of heavy metal contaminated soil. This research developed a new type of environmental functional material with a core-shell structure, which is an iron-based material functionalized with phosphorus and carbon from sludge for heavy metal pollution remediation. The results indicated that the C/P@Fe exhibits excellent heavy metal removal ability, and the maximum removal rates of the two heavy metals in simulated wastewater could reach 100% under optimum reaction conditions. It also effectively converts the labile Cr/Pb into the stable fraction after 28 days of incubation, which increased the maximum residual fraction percentage of Cr and Pb by 32.43% and 160% in soil. Further analysis found that the carbon layer wrapped around the iron base could improve the electron transport efficiency of reducing iron, phosphorus and ferrum could react with heavy metal ions to form stable minerals, such as FeCr 2 O 4 , FeO·Cr 2 O 3 , Pb 5 (PO 4 ) 3 OH, PbCO 3 , 2PbCO 3 ·Pb(OH) 2 and PbS, after reacting with C/P@Fe. The study demonstrated that the Iron-based materials functionalized with carbon and phosphorus from sludge provided a more efficient way to remove heavy metals.

An Iron-Based High-Entropy Alloy with Highly Efficient Degradation for p-Nitrophenol

Xie Shenghui,Liao Xiang,Zeng Xierong,Yang Haipeng,He Liang

High-entropy alloys (HEAs) have attracted widespread attention due to their excellent mechanical properties. However, their functional properties arising from the supersaturated solid solution state can be improved. Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) are considered to be an effective method for decomposing organic pollutants, and HEAs are proposed as effective candidates for AOP catalysts. Currently, several HEAs used for organic pollutant degradation are prepared through mechanical alloying. In this work, FeAlCoNi and FeAlCoNiB Fenton-like catalysts were prepared by single roll melt spinning and subsequent ball milling techniques. We found that the FeAlCoNiB HEA exhibits highly efficient degradation for p -nitrophenol ( p -NP). The degradation efficiency of FeAlCoNiB is 120 times higher than that of FeAlCoNi, which confirms that boron functions effectively during the degradation process. FeAlCoNiB has a better degradation efficiency than pure iron powder and a degradation efficiency comparable to that of the amorphous Fe 78 Si 11 B 11 alloy. Additionally, the degradation efficiency of FeAlCoNiB X increases ( k values from 0.13 to 0.55 min −1 ) when the boron content increases from an X value of 0.25 to 1.25. We speculate that Fe 2 B favors the degradation process and promotes zero-valent iron to decompose organic pollutants through a galvanic cell effect. Possible p -NP degradation pathways are proposed after LC–MS analysis. This study provides a new series of HEA Fenton-like catalysts, which have the potential to be prepared into bulk devices for industrial applications.

Unveiling Dynamic Surface Transformations: Mo-Doped Fe-Based MOFs as Next-Generation Oxygen Evolution Catalysts

Sheraz Muhammad,Bowen Yao,Aling Zhou,Zhiyang Huang,Sumayya Khan,Fengli Wei,Zuyang Luo,Tayirjan Taylor Isimjan,Xiulin Yang

Unlocking the full potential of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) for water-splitting applications requires innovative strategies to enhance their catalytic efficiency and stability. Here, we introduce a Mo-doped Fe-based MOF (MoFe-NH2-BDC) with a unique 2D nanosheet and plate-like morphology to revolutionize the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Mo incorporation optimizes electronic properties, accelerates charge transfer, and dynamically reconstructs the catalyst surface into highly active FeOOH species, ensuring long-term performance. This next-generation electrocatalyst achieves an ultra-low overpotential of 254 mV at 20 mA cm‒2, with a rapid Tafel slope of 66 mV dec‒1, surpassing conventional RuO2 catalysts. Operando Raman and ATR-FTIR spectroscopy reveal that Mo facilitates an adsorbate evolution mechanism (AEM), stabilizing intermediates and boosting reaction kinetics. In a practical two-electrode system, MoFe-NH2-BDC (+) || Pt/C (−) demonstrates an exceptional cell voltage of 1.58 V at 100 mA cm‒2, maintaining stability for 85 h. These results underscore the transformative impact of Mo doping in MOFs, paving the way for highly efficient, durable, and scalable electrocatalysts for sustainable energy applications.

Insight into the role of Fe5C2 in CO2 catalytic hydrogenation to hydrocarbons

Junhui Liu,Guanghui Zhang,Xiao Jiang,Junhu Wang,Chunshan Song,Xinwen Guo

Iron-based catalysts have been widely used to synthesize value-added hydrocarbons through CO 2 hydrogenation. Fe carbide, Fe 5 C 2 , was proposed as the active phase responsible for C C coupling during the chain growth. However, the reaction mechanism over iron-based catalysts is still under debate due to the presence of multiple phases of Fe species. In this work, Fe 5 C 2 and K-modified Fe 5 C 2 were prepared and used to study the relationship between the Fe phase, catalytic performance and reaction pathways. CH 4 and CO selectivities of 46.1 C-mol% and 2.8 C-mol% were obtained on Fe 5 C 2 at a CO 2 conversion of 49.8 %, with the main hydrocarbon products being alkanes. With the addition of the promoter K, the C 2 -C 4 = selectivity increased to above 38.0 C-mol%, and the selectivity to C 5+ hydrocarbons increased to 23.9 C-mol% at a similar CO 2 conversion. CH 4 and C 2+ hydrocarbons formed through the CO 2 →CO→hydrocarbons (indirect) route over K-modified Fe 5 C 2 , whereas the direct hydrogenation route occurred on unmodified Fe 5 C 2 in addition to the indirect route of CO 2 to CO to hydrocarbons through Fischer-Tropsch synthesis (FTS) processes. This work offers insights in direct CO 2 hydrogenation over Fe 5 C 2 and Fe 3 O 4 -Fe 5 C 2 catalysts, which advances the understanding of the functions of active phases and reaction pathways of CO 2 hydrogenation over iron-based catalysts.

Oxygen-Vacancy-Rich Fe@Fe3O4 Boosting Fenton Chemistry

Rongwei Zheng,Ruifan Tan,Yali Lv,Xiaoling Mou,Junqiao Qian,Ronghe Lin,Ping Fang,Weidong Kan

Iron-based materials are widely applied in Fenton chemistry, and they have promising prospects in the processing of wastewater. The composition complexity and rich chemistry of iron and/or oxides, however, hamper the precise understanding of the active sites and the working mechanism, which still remain highly controversial. Herein, iron oxides of four different model systems are designed through a conventional precipitation method plus H2reduction treatment. These systems feature Fe@Fe3O4with abundant oxygen vacancy, Fe0and Fe3O4particles with interface structures, and Fe3O4-dominated nanoparticles of different sizes. These materials are applied in the decomposition of methyl orange as a model reaction to assess the Fenton chemistry. The Fe@Fe3O4with core–shell structures exhibits significantly higher decomposition activity than the other Fe3O4-rich nanoparticles. A thin Fe3O4layer formed by auto-oxidation of iron particles when exposed to air can boost the activity as compared with the Fe0and Fe3O4particles with interface structures but poor oxygen vacancy. The unique hetero-structure with the co-existence of both metallic iron and oxygen vacancy displays excellent redox propensity, which might account for the superior Fenton activity. This finding provides a new perspective to understand and design highly efficient iron-based Fenton catalysts.

Comparative study on washing effects of different washing agents and conditions on heavy metal contaminated soil

Zhihua Zhu,Jianle Wang,Xueqiang Liu,Le Yuan,Xueming Liu,Hong Deng

The soil washing technology of heavy metals in soil has the prospect of practical application. In this study, we screening out the best washing conditions for remediation of heavy metal contaminated soil and the conclusions are verified by pilot-scale field tests. Compared with citric acid (CA) and ethylene diamine teraacetic acid disodium salt (EDTA), Iron-based compounds (IC) has highest removal rate of heavy metals in soil. Heavy metals are mainly concentrated in soil with small particle size. Comprehensive cost consideration, the best washing concentration is 0.06 mol·L −1 , the best solid liquid ratio is 1:5 and the best washing time is 30 min. CaO can precipitate heavy metals in washing waste liquor by increasing the pH of heavy metals in washing waste liquor, and the best precipitation time is 30 min considering the comprehensive cost. The results of pilot scale experiments show that the IC washing technology was shown to be an effective approach to rapidly reduce the Pb, Zn and As in contaminated soil.

Engineering halogen ligand in Fe-based ionic liquid for elemental mercury removal from flue gas

Hao Chen,Chaofang Li,Jing Yuan,Ding Bao,Fenghua Shen,Pingshan Wang,Xingzheng Dai,Zhanqing Lu,Kaisong Xiang,Hui Liu

The application of Fe-based ionic liquids (ILs) in elemental mercury (Hg 0 ) removal from flue gas is limited by the low oxidative activity of the Fe(III) center. Here, a strategy of engineering halogen ligand to enhance the oxidative activity of Fe-based ILs for mercury removal was proposed. We developed a series of ionic liquids [Bmim][FeCl 4-x Br x ] (x = 0–4) with varying ratios of Cl − and Br − ligand substitutions. Mercury removal performance evaluations demonstrated a positive correlation between the oxidative activity towards Hg 0 and the number of Br ligand substitutions in the ILs. [Bmim][FeBr 4 ] achieved ∼99 % removal efficiency in the temperature range of 50–150 °C, with a saturated adsorption capacity reaching 205.4 mg/g (at 150 °C). In-situ Raman spectroscopy, DFT calculations, Hg-TPD, and XPS collectively revealed that the introduction of Br significantly lowered the excitation energy of the ligand–metal p-d orbital electron transitions, which facilitates the generation of active bromine species with unfilled 4p orbital, consequently enhancing the oxidative removal performance of Fe-based ILs for Hg 0 . This work provides an application of metal-based ILs in the realm of mercury removal and broadens the scope of ligand–metal interaction for IL design.

Robust Activity and Stability of P-Doped Fe–Carbon Composites Derived from MOF for Bromate Reduction

Li Long,Xuechun Wang,Heyun Fu,Xiaolei Qu,Shourong Zheng,Zhaoyi Xu

Iron-based materials are effective for the reductive removal of the disinfection byproduct bromate in water, while the construction of highly stable and active Fe-based materials with wide pH adaptability remains greatly challenging. In this study, highly dispersed iron phosphide-decorated porous carbon (Fe2P(x)@P(z)NC-y) was prepared via the thermal hydrolysis of Fe@ZIF-8, followed by phosphorus doping (P-doping) and pyrolysis. The reduction performances of Fe2P(x)@P(z)NC-y for bromate reduction were evaluated. Characterization results showed that the Fe, P, and N elements were homogeneously distributed in the carbonaceous matrix. P-doping regulated the coordination environment of Fe atoms and enhanced the conductivity, porosity, and wettability of the carbonaceous matrix. As a result, Fe2P(x)@P(1.0)NC-950 exhibited enhanced reactivity and stability with an intrinsic reduction kinetic constant (kint) 1.53–1.85 times higher than Fe(x)@NC-950 without P-doping. Furthermore, Fe2P(0.125)@P(1.0)NC-950 displayed superior reduction efficiency and prominent stability with very low Fe leaching (4.53–22.98 μg L–1) in a wide pH range of 4.0–10.0. The used Fe2P(0.125)@P(1.0)NC-950 could be regenerated by phosphating, and the regenerated Fe2P(0.125)@P(1.0)NC-950 maintained 85% of its primary reduction activity after five reuse cycles. The study clearly demonstrates that Fe2P-decorated porous carbon can be applied as a robust and stable Fe-based material in aqueous bromate reduction.

Adsorption behavior of arsenicals on MIL-101(Fe): The role of arsenic chemical structures

Zongchen Li,Xuemin Liu,Wei Jin,Qingsong Hu,Yaping Zhao

Arsenic species are regarded as typical water pollutants due to their toxicity. The chemical structures of arsenic species greatly influence their migration and transformation in the environment. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are used as reliable adsorbents to control arsenic contamination, so it is urgently needed to study the effect of chemical structure of arsenic species during adsorption process. The adsorption behaviors of arsenate (As(V)) and its organic forms such as roxarsone (ROX), p-arsanilic acid (p-ASA) and dimethyl arsenate (DMA) by MIL-101(Fe), a type of highly porosity iron-based MOFs in aqueous environment were detailed investigated. The adsorption kinetics of those arsenic species on MIL-101(Fe) is rapid followed with pseudo-second-order kinetic model. MIL-101(Fe) exhibits excellent adsorption capacities for As(V), ROX, p-ASA and DMA with maximum adsorption capacities of 232.98, 507.97, 379.65 and 158.94 mg g −1 , respectively. The formed Fe O As inner-sphere coordination between arsenic species and the incomplete-coordinated cationic Fe in the MIL-101(Fe) cluster is the primary adsorption mechanism based on FTIR and XPS analysis. Substituent aromatic units in ROX and p-ASA strengthen the adsorption on MIL-101(Fe) through hydrogen bonds and π-π stacking interaction, resulting in higher adsorption capacities far beyond that of As(V) and DMA. The reusability of MIL-101(Fe) is limited by the strong Fe O As coordination. These results confirm MIL-101(Fe) a reliable adsorbent to control the aqueous arsenic species contamination and emphasize the significant role of the chemical structure of arsenic speciation on adsorption performances of MOFs.

Novel iron metal matrix composite reinforced by quartz sand for the effective dechlorination of aqueous 2-chlorophenol

Yunfei Zhang,Bo Yang,Yanni Han,Chaojin Jiang,Deli Wu,Jinhong Fan,Luming Ma

In this work, we tested a novel iron metal matrix composite (MMC) synthesized by mechanically introducing quartz sand (SiO 2 ) into an iron matrix (denoted as SiO 2 –Fe MMC). The pseudo-first-order reaction rate constant of the SiO 2 –Fe MMC (initial pH 5.0) for 20 mg/L of 2-chlorophenol (2-CP) was 0.051 × 10 −3  L/m 2 /min, which was even higher than that of some reported Pd/Fe bimetals. This extraordinary high activity was promoted by the quick iron dissolution rate, which was caused by the formation of Fe–C internal electrolysis from carbonization of process control agent (PCA) and the active reinforcement/metal interfaces during the milling process. In addition, pH has slight effect on the dechlorination rate. The SiO 2 –Fe MMC retained relatively stable activity, still achieving 71% removal efficiency for 2-CP after six consecutive cycles. The decrease in dechlorination efficiency can be attributed to the rapid consumption of Fe 0 . A dechlorination mechanism using the SiO 2 –Fe MMC was proposed by a direct electron transfer from Fe 0 to 2-CP at the quartz sand/iron interface.

Corrosion behavior of iron-based and Ni-based alloys melted in NaCl–MgCl2–KCl mixed molten salt under vacuum atmosphere

Sijie Liu,Renda Wang,Li Wang,Fangfang Ge,Mengyu Gao,Yang Si,Bingsheng Li

In this work, static immersion and gravimetric methods were used to study the corrosion behavior of three common stainless steels and four Ni-based alloys in a NaCl–MgCl 2 –KCl mixed molten salt under vacuum atmosphere. The corrosion test was conducted at 700 °C, with a maximum exposure time of 100 h. Corrosion behavior was determined by measuring the mass loss of the sample at different time intervals and the corrosion rates at 100 h. The microstructure of the alloy was analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), atomic force microscope (AFM), and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The results showed that stainless steels were generally more severely corroded than Ni-based alloys. 304 stainless steel and In800H exhibited the worst corrosion resistance, whereas Ni-based alloy In625 had the best corrosion resistance. Fe and Cr were dissolved in the molten chloride salts and reacted with the molten chloride salts. Mo played a positive role in suppressing the corrosion of the alloys in molten chloride salts by inhibiting the outward diffusion of the elements.
