Hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) is of significant interest in the environmental field due to its high toxicity. Biochar is commonly used as an adsorbent for Cr(VI) removal from wastewater. However, its lower removal efficiency remains a persistent challenge. This study develops an iron-modified rice straw biochar through a simple precipitation and pyrolysis method and applies it for Cr(VI) removal in wastewater, which could convert waste into treasure and improve the adsorption performance of adsorbent. In the adsorption experiments, the results revealed that the adsorption efficiency of Cr(VI) reached 95.54% within 480 min (conditions: adsorbent dosage 2.67 g/L, pH 2.5, temperature 25 ± 2 °C). The Langmuir isotherm model was more suitable to describe the adsorption behavior of Cr(VI) by Fe-BC, and the fitted adsorption capacity achieved 10.03 mg/g. The experimental process was better described by the pseudo-second-order kinetic model, indicating that the adsorption process chemical adsorption was the rate-limiting step. The thermodynamic experiments revealed that the adsorption process of Cr(VI) by Fe-BC was spontaneous and endothermic. Column experiments demonstrated that a lower flow speed was beneficial to adsorption performance. Mechanistic studies highlighted the synergistic roles of electrostatic attraction, ion exchange, and reduction in Cr(VI) removal. These findings provide novel perspectives and innovative approaches for the development and application of adsorbents.

To recover nitrogen and phosphorus from water bodies and reduce their potential risk of causing eutrophication, high-temperature pyrolysis-produced biochar (HBC) modified by ferric chloride (Fe-HBC) was adopted to investigate its surface modification on the co-adsorption performance of nitrogen and phosphate. In comparison to HBC, Fe-HBC exhibited superior specific surface area, well-developed pore structure, and enriched surface functional groups while successfully loading Fe 2+ and Fe 3+ . It has been determined that the co-adsorption mechanism of ammonium and phosphate by Fe-HBC involves a combination of pore filling, ion exchange, functional group coordination, electrostatic attraction, and coprecipitation. The results from the batch adsorption experiments indicate that the ammonium adsorption capacities for Fe-HBC1, Fe-HBC2, and Fe-HBC3 were 10.59 mg/g, 10.38 mg/g, and 7.59 mg/g, respectively, while the phosphate adsorption capacities were 13.46 mg/g, 10.46 mg/g, and 15.22 mg/g, respectively. The results of the column adsorption experiments showed that too high or too low biochar percentage and flow rate were not conducive to improving the adsorption capacity of the adsorption column, and the maximum adsorption capacity of the adsorption column was achieved at a biochar percentage of 1 % and a flow rate of 1 mL/min. This study demonstrates the potential of this iron-modified biochar derived from agricultural wastes for practical application in the removal of ammonium and phosphate from wastewater.

Ion exchange method was applied to synthesize iron modified activated carbon in the present study. The carbon in volatile compounds of cation-exchange resin could be fixed by ferric ion, resulting in the higher carbon yields of iron contained adsorbents. The optimal temperatures for carbonization and activation of ferric ion-exchanged resin were determined to be 800 °C. The iron modified activated carbon with (Fe/AC-800) and without (Fe/C-800) activation at 800 °C showed different mercury removal mechanisms, and they could be employed to remove mercury from flue gases at reaction temperatures of 180 and 150 °C, respectively. HgO, HgS and HgSO 4 were the mainly mercury compounds generated over spent Fe/C-800, whereas only HgO and HgS were observed over spent Fe/AC-800. The formation of HgO over spent Fe/C-800 and Fe/AC-800 were mainly due to the oxidation of mercury by chemisorbed oxygen and lattice oxygen, respectively. The HgSO 4 was derived from FeS with the aid of oxygen, and the HgS was formed through the reaction between mercury and FeS and/or elemental sulfur .

The composite material SBC-Fe-x with sludge and Fe 3+ was developed by different calcination temperatures (600, 700, and 800 °C) for the removal of tetracycline (TC). The adsorption rates of SBC-Fe-600, SBC-Fe-700, and SBC-Fe-800 were 77.5%, 89%, and 91%, respectively. Furthermore, the Langmuir model indicated that the maximum adsorption capacity of SBC-Fe-700 (157.93 mg/g) was three times greater than that of SBC-Fe-600. The conclusions were confirmed by a series of characterizations that SBC-Fe-700 showed a larger specific surface area, well-developed pore structure, rich oxygen-containing functional groups and a high degree of graphitization. The results of pH experiments indicated the broad applicability of SBC-Fe-700 for TC adsorption. In addition, SBC-Fe-700 suggested outstanding performance in different water environments. This work produced a feasible adsorbent for the removal of TC, and a new direction for sludge resource utilization was proposed.

The efficient removal and degradation of microplastics are critical for protecting aquatic ecosystems. Herein, Fe-modified magnetic biochar (MBC) was synthesized as an adsorbent for removing microplastics in water. The effects of lignin/Fe salt mass ratios, adsorbent amount, adsorption time, adsorption temperature, solution pH, and presence of coexisting anions on adsorption efficiency were investigated. The thermal degradation behaviour and recycling characteristic of microplastics was also explored. Results showed that MBC has a developed pore structure, superparamagnetic property, and abundant oxygen-containing functional groups. The removal efficiency of polystyrene microplastics using MBC-11 was 99 %, with an adsorption capacity of 68.57 mg/g, which was 25 times higher than that of unmodified lignin biochar. The kinetics of the adsorption process followed the pseudo-first kinetic model, and the equilibrium data best fitted the Freundlich model. Thermodynamic results confirmed that adsorption over MBC was a spontaneous, heat-absorbing, and entropy-increasing process. The adsorption mechanism of PS by biochar was mainly via electrostatic and hydrophobic interactions and pore throttle. The thermal-degradation products of PS were mainly hydrocarbons, including styrene, benzene, and toluene, owing to the enhanced β-scission, H-shift, and methylation reactions at MBC catalytic sites. This study provides a scientific basis for the development of control technologies for microplastics removal in water.

This study explores the potential of low-cost biochar modified with ferrihydrite and goethite for the remediation of heavily As-polluted groundwater. Combining batch experiments and synchrotron radiation-based characterization, we investigated the mechanisms of As(III) adsorption and oxidation. The modified biochars exhibited significant adsorption capacities, achieving fitted q max of 45.7 ± 3.9 mg/g for ferrihydrite-modified biochar (FhGM) and 20.2 ± 1.5 mg/g for goethite-modified biochar (GtGM) at a dosage of 1.0 g/L and an initial concentration of 10 mg/L As(III) over 24 h. Biochar facilitated approximately 30 % As(V) generation from As(III) due to enhanced electron transfer. Moreover, over 90 % of As(III) was oxidized to As(V) following the addition of H 2 O 2 , with scanning transmission X-ray microscopy revealing the distribution of As(III), and As(V) on the solid phase. In the GtGM-H 2 O 2 system, reactive oxidation species, primarily O 2 •– , served as the main oxidant. In the FhGM-H 2 O 2 system, Fe(IV) likely acted as the primary oxidizing agent. Column experiments with 0.64 g of FhGM demonstrated that, when treating 50 mg/L As-contaminated groundwater, the effluent total As concentration remained below the maximum allowable limit of 10 μg/L after 21 h. Furthermore, in the presence of H 2 O 2 , the system managed to treat 200 mg/L As-contaminated groundwater, and the effluent total As concentration exceeded 10 μg/L after 11 h. This study provides valuable insights and practical results for the remediation of high-concentration arsenic-contaminated groundwater, highlighting the effectiveness of iron-modified biochar in this application.

This study investigates the effectiveness of a two-stage process aimed at achieving sustainable aromatic production through the co-pyrolysis of biomass and plastic, followed by catalytic reforming utilizing an Fe-modified ZSM-5 catalyst. To characterize the thermal decomposition behavior and monitor the progression of volatile compounds during the co-pyrolysis process, we employed thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) in conjunction with Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC–MS). Additionally, we conducted a compositional analysis of the resultant bio-oil. This study demonstrates that the co-pyrolysis process, employing a catalyst-to-feedstock ratio of 1:1 with the 10Fe/ZSM-5 catalyst (10 wt.% Fe loading), significantly increases the yield of aromatic hydrocarbons to 67.38%. This yield is markedly higher compared to the aromatic hydrocarbon yield of 55.37% obtained from catalytic pyrolysis of biomass alone. Moreover, these findings highlight the potential of this integrated methodology as a promising pathway for transforming waste materials into value-added chemicals, thereby improving bio-oil quality through the enrichment of aromatic compounds.

Atrazine has been widely used as an herbicide, and its harm has attracted more and more attention. In this study, magnetic algal residue biochar (MARB) was prepared from algae residue, a by-product of aquaculture, by ball milling it with ferric oxide to study the adsorption and removal of the triazine herbicide atrazine in a soil medium. The adsorption kinetics and isotherm results showed that atrazine removal by MARB reached 95.5% within 8 h at a concentration of 10 mg·L −1 , but the removal rate dropped to 78.4% in the soil medium. The pseudo-first- and pseudo-second-order kinetics and Langmuir isotherms best described atrazine adsorption on MARB. It is estimated that the maximum adsorption capacity of MARB can reach 10.63 mg·g −1 . The effects of pH, humic acids, and cations on the adsorption performance of MARB for atrazine were also studied. When pH was 3, the adsorption capacity of MARB was twice that of other pHs. Only in the presence of 50 mg·L −1 HA and 0.1 mol·L −1 NH 4 + , Na, and K, the adsorption capacity of MARB to AT decreased by 8% and 13%, respectively. The results showed that MARB had a stable removal profile over a wide range of conditions. The adsorption mechanisms involved multiple interaction forms, among which the introduction of iron oxide promoted hydrogen bonding formation and π-π interactions by enriching –OH and –COO on the surface of MARB. Overall, the magnetic biochar prepared in this study can be used as an effective adsorbent to remove atrazine in complex environments and is ideal for algal biomass waste treatment and environmental governance. + +

ABSTRACT In this study, D751 resin (macroporous styrene chelated ion exchange resin, sodium form) was modified by FeCl 3 to enhance the adsorption performance of phosphate from solution. The modified resin (D751-Fe) was characterized by FTIR and XPS, and its adsorption property toward phosphate was presented. The results showed that it was favorable of phosphate adsorption with the increase in the temperature and acidity. The effect of coexisting ions (chloride and sulfate) was insignificant. When the solid–liquid ratio was 1.5 g L –1 , the unit adsorption amount of D751-Fe toward phosphate was to 14.1 mg g –1 (according to P element) with solution pH 3. The adsorption isotherms were well fitted by Langmuir model, Freundlich model, and Koble–Corrigan model while the kinetic curves were well described by pseudo-first-order kinetic model, double constant model, and intraparticle model. There were both physical adsorption and chemical adsorption between D751-Fe and phosphate. It was effective for 0.1 mol·L –1 sodium hydroxide solution as desorbent to regenerate phosphate-loaded adsorbent. It is concluded that that D751-Fe can be used well for the removal of phosphate from solution.

Direct synthesis of dimethyl carbonate (DMC) using CO2 and methanol as raw materials is an environmentally friendly and promising route for recycling carbon sources from exhaust gases. Herein, well-constructed CeO2-based nanoparticle catalysts promoted by various Fe contents were synthesized via a facile co-precipitation method and demonstrated to be highly effective for direct DMC synthesis. The uniform doping of iron species in ceria lattice resulted in the formation of more surface oxygen vacancies, and thereby more coordinatively unsaturated surface metal cations and lattice oxygen anions were generated, which served as the Lewis acidic-basic sites required for the reaction. Based on in-situ DRIFTS results, it was deduced that the oxygen vacancies played a crucial role in activating CO2 to reactive bidentate carbonates and the formation of active terminal methoxy intermediates was also enhanced by Fe incorporation. Consequently, the maximum DMC yield of 3.84 mmol h-1 g-1 cat was obtained on Fe0.04Ce0.96Ox under relatively mild reaction conditions of 130 °C and 3.0 MPa. Additionally, in the tandem reaction system using 2-cyanopyridine (2-CP) as a dehydrating agent, the catalytic activity for 2-CP hydration was found to be closely associated with the total basicity of the catalysts, and in turn a higher hydration rate was more conducive to the DMC synthesis through enhancing in-situ water removal efficiency. As expected, the present work provides in-depth insights into the structure-performance relationship of Fe-modified ceria-based catalysts for direct DMC synthesis from CO2 and methanol, and offers meaningful guidance for the advancement of highly efficient catalysts.

Combined pollution caused by organic pollutants and heavy metals pose a significant challenge to the adsorption process . In this study, iron-modified biochar (Fe-BC) was prepared by using ferrate (K 2 FeO 4 ) and wheat stalk as the precursors for the adsorption of copper (Cu 2+ ) and sulfadiazine (SDZ), especially under combined pollution scenarios. Iron modification not only enlarged the surface area but also loaded iron oxide nanoparticles on biochar surface. Accordingly, Fe-BC exhibited better adsorption capability of Cu 2+ and SDZ than the pristine biochar (BC). The corresponding maximum adsorption capacities of Fe-BC 700 were 46.85 mg g −1 and 45.43 mg g −1 towards Cu 2+ and SDZ, respectively. Interestingly, the adsorption was elevated in binary-pollutants system, suggesting a synergistic effect, which was probably attributed to the mutual bridging effects and complexation between Cu 2+ and SDZ. The loaded iron oxide particles could serve as a physical barrier to separate the adsorptions of Cu 2+ and SDZ and thus inhibited the competitive adsorption. Meanwhile, theoretical calculation demonstrated that sulfonamide group was the most probable binding site. Columns packed with Fe-BC 700 showed better performances for Cu 2+ and SDZ removal in binary system (635.73 BV for Cu 2+ and 4846.26 BV for SDZ) than in single systems (571.60 BV for Cu 2+ and 3572.06 BV for SDZ), which was consistent with batch adsorption experiments. These results demonstrated the potential application of Fe-BC 700 for simultaneous adsorption of Cu 2+ and SDZ and provided a cost-effective way for the remediation of organic and inorganic pollutants.

Ceramsites are extensively employed as substrates for adsorbents in studies focused on phosphorus adsorption, leaving ceramsites crafted from diatomite less explored. Diatomite-based ceramsite, with its distinct porous architecture and surface silanol functionalities, is adept at supporting a variety of metal oxides, presenting a distinct advantage over other ceramsite variants. In light of this, the present study embarked on producing diatomite-based ceramsite using diatomite as the foundational material, subsequently enhancing it through the incorporation of Fe, thus yielding an Fe-modified diatomite-based ceramsite. Through adsorption testing, the modified ceramsite demonstrated a significantly improved adsorption capacity of 4.06 mg P/g, marking a substantial enhancement from the initial capacity of 0.9 mg P/g. The process of phosphorus adsorption exhibited a strong alignment with the Langmuir isotherm model and the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. In-depth analyses employing XRD, FTIR, zeta potential, and XPS techniques have revealed that the principal mechanisms driving the adsorption process are centered on interactions involving electrostatic forces, the formation of chemical precipitates, and the exchange of ligands. This investigation not only opens new avenues for the application of diatomite-based ceramsite but also lays down a theoretical foundation for its modification, thereby enriching the spectrum of its utility.
