Rice is one of the world's staple foods . Cadmium (Cd) levels in paddy soil are still increasing, and “Cd-contaminated rice” is a frequent occurrence, posing a serious threat to human health. Therefore, Cd contamination in rice is a key issue in agricultural production that needs to be addressed urgently. The Cd accumulation in rice is closely related to other elements. In this study, the impact of nickel (Ni) on the uptake and accumulation of Cd in rice was revealed, and the mechanism was discussed. Statistical analysis of field data showed that Cd concentration in rice grains decreased exponentially with increasing Ni concentration in paddy soils, which was verified by the hydroponic experiments. Under 5 μmol/L Cd exposure conditions, the addition of Ni (100 μmol/L) reduced the Cd contents in roots, stems, and leaves by 81.6 %, 60.6 %, and 65.9 %, respectively. With the presence of Ni, the amount of iron plaque decreased, and the Cd content in the iron plaque was reduced due to the competition between Ni and Cd for adsorption sites. In addition, the migration of Cd from stems to leaves was reduced. At the same time, the distribution of Cd in the cell was altered, and the concentration of Cd in the root cell walls increased with increasing Ni addition under 5 μmol/L Cd exposure. These findings highlight the critical role of Ni in inhibiting Cd accumulation in rice, and provide important information for understanding the effects of coexisting elements in Cd-contaminated soils on Cd accumulation in crops.

In this study, a novel slightly-soluble selenium (Se) fertilizer (SSF) was successfully applied to address the problems of Cd pollution in paddy soil and rice, and Se deficiency in human beings. The pot and field experiments showed that Cd content in the rice grains was reduced by 48.4%–82.89% and Se content was increased nearly by 30-fold comparing the control group. The application of SSF increased the soil pH and significantly reduced the DGT-extracted Cd in the soil. Moreover, DCB-extractable Fe content on the surface of roots was prompt by SSF, which formed a physical barrier, namely iron plaque (IP), to inhibit Cd translocation to the above-ground tissues of the rice plants. The Cd content in the IP was also decreased before the filling period, possibly contributing to the reduction in major Cd accumulation in the rice grains. In addition, the continuous Se increase and Cd reduction in the IP by the SSF gradually exceeded that of water-soluble Se during the three periods of rice plant growth. This suggests that SSF has high potential to be an effective Se fertilizer for inhibiting Cd uptake and enriching Se in rice.

Iron (Fe) plaques in coastal wetlands are widely recognized because of their strong adsorption affinity for natural particles, but their interaction behaviors and mechanisms with plastics remain unknown. Through laboratory incubation experiments, paired with multiple characterization methods and microbial analysis, this work focused on the characteristics of Fe plaques on low-density polyethylene plastic surfaces and their relationship with environmental factors in coastal wetlands (Mangrove and Spartina alterniflora soil). The results showed that iron plaques increased the adhesive force of the plastic surface from 65.25 to 300 nN and promoted the oxidation of the plastic surface. Fe plaque formation was stimulated by salinity , anaerobic conditions , natural organic matter, and a weak alkaline scenario (pH 8.0–8.3). The Fe content showed a stable positive correlation with heavy metals loading (i.e., As, Mn, Co, Cr, Pb, and Zn). Furthermore, we revealed that Fe plaque was positively regulated by Nitrospirae through 16S rRNA high-throughput sequencing analysis. Meanwhile, Verrucomicrobia and Kiritimatiellaeota . may act as depressants by consuming salt. This work illustrated that iron plaques could enhance the role of plastics in contaminant migration by altering their adsorption performance, providing new insights into plastic interface behavior and potential ecological effects in coastal wetlands.

Iron (Fe) plaque is a concentrated form of microbially available Fe oxide that coats rice plant root surfaces, representing a high density of Fe oxide and which potentially mediates paddy soil CH 4 emissions. Using a combination of methods including Fe plaque induction, isotopic labeling , pure microbial strains, and Fe oxide addition experiments, we investigated the impact of Fe plaque on methane (CH 4 ) emissions from paddy soils and explored the associated mechanisms underlying the influence of Fe plaque on CH 4 emissions. A 13 C–CH 4 isotopic labeling experiment showed that Fe plaque did not significantly affect CH 4 oxidation and associated gene expression, whereas Fe plaque significantly enriched methanogenic archaea and their expression of genes associated with methanogenesis. Pure microbial strain and Fe oxide addition experiments showed that the enhancement of CH 4 production in the presence of Fe plaque was caused by the (semi) conductive minerals within the Fe plaque, specifically, hematite , which promoted the extracellular electron transfer between the methanogenic archaea and their syntrophic bacteria, resulting in enhancement of methanogenesis. Our results imply that the presence of Fe plaque will accelerate CH 4 emissions from paddy soils and suppressing Fe plaque has the potential to mitigate CH 4 emissions.

Introduction Traditionally, Silicon (Si) fertilizers are applied externally to the soil or sprayed on the leaves to reduce rice’s arsenic (As) accumulation. However, in practical agricultural production, the economic benefits of lowering As in rice grains often fail to outweigh the production costs. Objectives This study investigated an innovative technology—Si-rich seedlings (endogenous Si)—that is simple to implement, cost-effective, and highly effective in reducing As accumulation in rice grains. Methods The effects of exogenous and endogenous Si supplementation on As dynamics in rice were investigated in hydroponics in field experiments. Results Both methods significantly reduced As accumulation in the rice grains (22.23 % and 17.70 %, respectively). There was no significant difference in the treatment effects. However, endogenous Si supplementation demonstrated a significantly lower cost per unit of As reduction (88.61 % decrease), and it was easier to implement when compared with exogenous Si supplementation. The main processes by which various Si treatment techniques decrease As accumulation in rice differed, even though Si was crucial to As absorption in rice through a combination of mechanisms, such as gene regulation, iron plaque inhibition, and node I sequestration. The fundamental mechanism was Si/As antagonism, which regulated Si absorption through gene regulation in both methods. Interestingly, the exogenous Si treatment improved the barrier function of the root surface iron plaque against As. At the same time, laser ablation-inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) demonstrated that endogenous Si had a more pronounced impact on rice node I. Furthermore, experiments conducted at multiple scales (including variety, pot, and field experiments) validated the stability and reliability of the Si-rich seedling technology under complex environmental conditions. Conclusion Si-rich seedlings provide a cost-effective, stable, and practical solution for mitigating As contamination in paddy fields. This approach holds significant potential for enhancing soil health and improving food safety, contributing to the sustainable development of rice cultivation.

Poorly crystalline iron (Fe) oxides are commonly deposited on the surface of rice roots, forming an Fe plaque. This Fe plaque is an important area for Fe redox reactions because the poorly crystalline Fe is available for microbial transformations. However, it remains unclear what the mechanisms are that cause the root Fe plaque to affect CO 2 emissions from paddy soils . Thus, this study investigated the effects of Fe plaque on paddy soil CO 2 emissions and the associated mechanisms. Paddy soil with rice plant roots containing an Fe plaque-coating had 1.5-fold larger CO 2 emissions and higher expression levels of genes involved in soil carbon (C) degradation than Fe plaque-free roots, indicating that Fe plaque stimulated paddy soil derived CO 2 emissions. Fe plaque-coated rice roots, immersed in a 13 C-labeled glucose solution, emitted more CO 2 , with a higher abundance of 13 CO 2 , than the Fe plaque-free roots. These differences were not observed when the surfaces of the rice roots were sterilized. These results indicate that the Fe plaque-stimulated CO 2 emissions were due to soil microbial respiration , not autotrophic root respiration . Chelating the dissolved Fe on the root surface eliminated Fe plaque stimulation of CO 2 emissions, while Fe(III) supplementation correlated with enhanced CO 2 emissions. The stoichiometric mole ratio of the enhanced CO 2 emissions to the Fe(II) generated was comparable to the theoretical ratio of Fe(III) when used as an electron acceptor for organic C decomposition. These results showed that the Fe plaque enhancement of CO 2 emissions was coupled to Fe(III) reduction. Limiting the stimulating effects of Fe plaque on CO 2 emissions may be a potentially useful approach for mitigating organic C loss from paddy soils.

Phosphorus (P) availability is closely related to the distributions of pH, O 2 and phosphatase activities in the rhizosphere of plants growing in soils and sediments. In this study, the P uptake processes and mechanisms of Vallisneria natans ( V. natans ) during two vegetation periods (i.e., week three and six) were revealed using three noninvasive 2D imaging techniques: planar optode (PO), diffusive gradients in thin films (DGT) and zymography. The results showed that increased phosphatase activity, O 2 concentration and root-induced acidification were observed together in the rhizosphere of root segments and tips. In week three, when V. natans was young, the flux of DGT-labile P accumulated more in the rhizosphere in comparison with the bulk sediment. This was because increased phosphatase activity (of up to 35%) and root-induced acidification (with pH decreasing by up to 0.25) enhanced P acquisition of V. natans by the third week. However, the flux of DGT-labile P turned to depletion during weeks three to six of V. natans growth, after Fe plaque formed at the matured stage. The constant hydrolysis of phosphatase and acidification could not compensate for the P demand of the roots by the sixth week. At this stage, Fe plaque become the P pool, due to P fixation with solid Fe(III) hydroxides. Subsequently, V. natans roots acquired P from Fe plaque via organic acid complexation of Fe(III).

Improvements in plant activity and functional microbial communities are important to ensure the stability and efficiency of pollutant removal measures in cold regions. Although electrochemistry is known to accelerate pollutant degradation , cold stress acclimation of plants and the stability and activity of plant-microbial synergism remain poorly understood. The sulfamethoxazole (SMX) removal, iron plaque morphology, plant activity, microbial community, and function responses were investigated in an electrolysis-integrated ecological floating bed (EFB) at 6 ± 2 ℃. Electrochemistry significantly improved SMX removal and plant activity. Dense and uniform iron plaque was found on root surfaces in L-E-Fe which improved the plant adaptability at low temperatures and provided more adsorption sites for bacteria. The microbial community structure was optimized and the key functional bacteria for SMX degradation (e.g., Actinobacteriota, Pseudomonas ) were enriched. Electrochemistry improves the relative abundance of enzymes related to energy metabolism, thereby increasing energy responses to SMX and low temperatures. Notably, electrochemistry improved the expression of target genes ( sad B and sad C, especially sad C) involved in SMX degradation. Electrochemistry enhances hydrogen bonding and electrostatic interactions between SMX and sad C, thereby enhancing SMX degradation and transformation. This study provides a deeper understanding of the electrochemical stability of antibiotic degradation at low temperatures.

Although the compound pollution of microplastics and arsenic (As) in paddy soil can affect the growth and quality of rice, relevant research on this phenomenon was limited. Therefore, we combined a pot experiment with computational chemistry to explore the effects and mechanism of polystyrene (PSMP) and polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) microplastics on As bioavailability. PSMP and PTFE interacted with rice root exudates through van der Waals forces, approached the rice root system, inhibited root activity, reduced the relative abundance of Geobacteria and Anaeromyxobacter , and consequently reduced the iron plaques on the root surfaces. Consequently, As uptake by the rice was inhibited. PSMP and PTFE reduced the hemoglobin content by directly destroying its tertiary structure, thereby retarding rice growth. In contrast, As increased the hemoglobin content by inducing reactive oxygen species in rice. Under the influence of PSMP, PTFE, and As, the activities of soluble starch synthase and pyrophosphorylase in rice grains were inhibited, and starch accumulation decreased. Thus, PSMP, PTFE, and As reduced rice biomass and yield owing to their physiological toxicity and adverse impacts on root activity. Grain yields in soil with an As content of 86.3 mg·kg –1 , 0.5% small particle-sized PSMP, and 0.5% small particle-sized PTFE decreased by 30.7%, 20.6%, and 19.4%, respectively, compared to the control. This study determined the comprehensive mechanism through which PSMP and PTFE affect As bioavailability, which is critical for managing rice biomass and low yields in As and microplastic co-contaminated soil.
