Iron and nitrogen (Fe/N) co-doped porous carbons have already shown great potential as electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction reaction in alkaline media. However, it still remains a great challenge to finely integrate a hierarchical porous structure and Fe/N co-doping effect into one material at the same time. In this work, a rational design toward Fe/N-codoped hierarchical porous carbon spheres was developed by the formation of an iron-porphyrin-containing conjugated microporous polymer sphere with hollow structure (HCMP) through a silica sphere template directed condensation of pyrrole and 1,4-phthalaldehyde, then etched with NaOH, and treated with FeCl 2 . The resulting HCMP-Fe polymer was readily converted to a series of Fe/N co-doped hierarchical porous carbons (HPC-Fe/N-X, X = 700–900) upon pyrolysis at different temperatures and etching treatment. These porous carbons exhibit the high specific surface areas up to 518 m 2 g −1 and the contents of N and Fe up to 3.28 at.% and 0.85 wt.%, respectively. Benefiting from the high surface area, Fe/N co-doping character, HPC-Fe/N-700 exhibited excellent electrochemical catalytic performance for oxygen reduction reaction under alkaline condition (0.1 M KOH) with a low half-wave potential (0.84 V), a dominant four-electron transfer mechanism (n = 3.89 at 0.65 V), as well as a high diffusion limiting current density ( J L = 5.19 mA cm −2 ), comparable to those porous carbon-based ORR catalysts with excellent electrochemical performance.

Microplastics (MPs), as an emerging pollutant, are widely distributed in water environments and pose considerable environmental and health threats due to their chemical inertness and the toxicity of attached substances. The development of high-efficient and facile adsorbents for MPs removal is of significance. Hence, this study proposed an innovative iron–nitrogen co-doped layered adsorbent derived from glucose via molten salt-assisted pyrolysis. The presence of molten salt promoted the formation of layered structures, providing micron-scale channels for the entrapment of MPs from water. Loading iron alone enhanced electrostatic adsorption between MPs and carbon materials; however, excessive dosage clogged the channel structure. This can be solved by co-doping nitrogen, which facilitated uniform iron dispersion. The co-doped layered adsorbent with iron loading at 1.43 % achieved a removal efficiency of 96.5 % and capacity of 148.39 mg·g −1 for polystyrene (PS) MPs amid low plastic concentration and adsorbent dosage. It also exhibited efficient removal for a wide pH range and high salinity solution, maintaining over 90 % efficiency after multiple cycles. Kinetic analysis revealed a combined physical and chemical adsorption mechanism. The molten salt-assisted synthesis combined with iron–nitrogen co-doping offers a promising, scalable solution for MPs pollution control, paving the way for the development of highly efficient and reusable adsorbents with enhanced performance in environmental remediation.

The traditional electric furnace pyrolysis to produce heteroatom doped carbon faces the time-consuming issue due to the fixed size of furnace chamber and indirect heat transfer. Herein a fast Joule-heating pyrolysis method, viz., powering on the C, N, Fe-containing, conductive polyaniline precursor at fixed direct current (DC) voltage for a specific time, is put forward. The polyaniline precursor begins to decompose thermally when being powered with a DC voltage of 5.0 V upwards. In the pyrolysis products, Fe and N co-doping of carbon material leads to C–N bonding and C-Fe bonding in a certain way. The direct peroxide-peroxide fuel cell (DPPFC) with the optimal Fe, N codoped carbon material as anode and cathode can generate an open circuit voltage of 0.85 V and a peak power density of 29.7 mW cm−2 in ambient temperature, which is highly competitive compared with other DPPFCs with anode and/or cathode made of noble metals.

Designing efficient, stable, and low-cost non-precious metal electrocatalysts is critical for gainful utilization of renewable resources and effective water splitting. The catalytic efficiency is determined by interactions between the multiple main constituent elements and dopants. However, achieving performance-boosting synergistic interactions between different species in the catalyst is challenging. This work demonstrates such effect using low-temperature plasma-enhanced hydrothermal-phosphorization synthesis of Fe, N co-doped CoFeP-N nanowires. Nickel foam was utilized as the substrate to prepare CoFe-LDH precursor by hydrothermal method and CoFeP nanoparticles were obtained by phosphorization in a tube furnace. The N element was further doped into CoFeP using a low-temperature plasma discharge. The produced CoFeP-N nanowires exhibit far superior hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) activities in an alkaline medium compared to the original CoP due to the incorporation of Fe and N elements, with overpotentials of 64 mV and 219 mV at 10 mA cm −2 respectively, and excellent cycling stability. When CoFeP-N is used as both the cathode and anode of a two-electrode water splitting device, low voltages of only 1.516 V and 1.636 V were needed to achieve current density of 10 mA cm −2 and100 mA cm −2 respectively, which are better than that of Pt/C||RuO 2 and most non-precious metal-based electrocatalysts reported to date. These experimental results provide new insights and strategies for developing efficient, stable, and low-cost bifunctional water splitting electrocatalysts.

Zeolitic Imidazolate Frameworks-8 (ZIF-8) is commonly used as an ideal precursor for non-noble metal catalysts because of its high specific surface area, ultra-high porosity, and N-rich content. Upon pyrolyzing ZIF-8 at 900 °C in Ar, the resulting material, referred to as Z 8 , displayed good activity toward the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). Then the ZIF-8 was mixed with various conductive carbon materials, such as multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs), Acetylene black (ACET), Vulcan XC-72R (XC-72R), and Ketjenblack EC-600JD (EC-600JD), to form Z 8 composites. The Z 8 /MWCNTs composite exhibited enhanced ORR activity owing to its network structure, meso-/microporous hierarchical porous structure, improved electrical conductivity, and graphitization. Subsequently, iron and nitrogen co-doping is achieved through the pyrolysis of a mixture comprising Fe, N precursor, and ZIF-8/MWCNTs, which is denoted as FeN-Z 8 /MWCNTs. The intrinsically high electrical conductivity of MWCNTs facilitated efficient electron transfer during the ORR, while the meso-/microporous hierarchical porous structure and network structure of Fe, N co-doped ZIF-8/MWCNTs promoted oxygen transport. The presence of Fe-containing species in the catalyst acted as activity centers for ORR. This strategy of preparing Z 8 composites and modifying them with Fe, N co-doping offers an insightful approach to designing cost-effective electrocatalysts.

Pyrolysis-acquired iron and nitrogen codoped carbon (Fe-N-C) has been comprehensively investigated for its promising oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalytic performance and structural complexity. The modification of non-metal elements with larger atomic radius and the corresponding intrinsic microstructure-property relations are rarely reported. In this study, tellurium (Te) intervened Fe-N-C was prepared by micelles-induced polymerization with Te nanowires as an in-situ intervening agent. The out-plane bonding of Te with Fe induced the increase of both N content and proportion of pyridinic N on the material surface, thus improving the ORR catalytic performance. The assembled Zn-air battery demonstrated a maximum power density of 250 mW/cm 2 and excellent rate capability under various discharge current densities, which was much better than the Pt/C. Overall, the current work demonstrates a novel Te/Fe-N-C material and reveals an original Te intervened Fe-N-C strategy and N reconfiguration mechanism, which is of great significance for the design of key materials in energy-related fields.

Introduction of both nitrogen and transition metal elements into the carbon materials has demonstrated to be a promising strategy to construct highly active electrode materials for energy shortage. In this work, through the coordination reaction between Fe3+and 1,3,5–tris(4–aminophenyl)benzene, metallosupramolecular polymer precursors are designed for the preparation of carbon flakes co-doped with both Fe and N elements. The as-prepared carbon flakes display wrinkled edges and comprise Fe3C nanoparticle and active site of Fe–Nx. These carbon materials exhibit excellent electrocatalytic performance. Towards oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), the optimized sample has Eonsetand Ehalf-waveof 0.93 V and 0.83 V in alkaline system, respectively, which are very close to that of Pt/C. This approach may offer a new way to high performance and low-cost electrochemical catalysts. Keywords:coordination;metallosupramolecular polymer;active site;carbon materials;oxygen reduction reaction

Porous 3D graphene decorated by Fe species and N-doping (Fe/N-GAs) has been prepared by a cost-effective strategy. Benefiting from the characteristics of coordinating with metals and possessing a high nitrogen content, poly-2,6-diaminopyridine (PDAP) is preferably selected as nitrogen doping source. It is found that the active site species and defects on Fe/N-GAs samples are influenced by both pyrolyzing temperature and content of Fe, moreover, the Fe content can affect the morphology and structure of Fe/N-GAs, so the electrocatalytic activity towards the ORR on Fe/N-GAs can be tuned. The Fe/N-GAs with highly effective activity sites, connected pores and high surface area exhibit comparable activity (Eonset = −0.04 V vs. SCE, E1/2 = −0.21 V vs. SCE, JL = 6.65 mA cm−2) to commercial Pt/C, better stability and better tolerance to methanol than Pt/C in alkaline medium as well as improved activity compared to N-GAs in acidic medium.

Carbon quantum dots co-doped with iron and nitrogen (Fe@NCDs) were synthesized by using Passiflora edulis Sims ( P. edulis ) as a precursor. The Fe@NCDs exhibit outstanding peroxidase-mimetic activity owing to successful doping with iron resulting in a behavior similar to that of iron porphyrins. In the presence of H 2 O 2 , the Fe@NCDs catalyze the oxidation of the peroxidase substrate 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) with a color change from colorless to blue. The blue oxidation product has a characteristic absorption peaking at 652 nm. A colorimetric assay was worked out for uric acid (UA) that measures the hydrogen peroxide produced during oxidation of UA by uricase. Response is linear in the 2–150 μM UA concentration range, and the limit of detection is 0.64 μM. The method was applied to the determination of UA in (spiked) urine, and recoveries ranged from 92.0 to 103.4%.
Schematic representation of the fabrication of iron and nitrogen co-doped carbon dots (Fe@NCDs) using Passiflora edulis Sims as carbon-based materials. First, uric acid (UA) was oxidized to generate H 2 O 2 by uricase. Then, the Fe@NCDs catalyzed the oxidation of 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) to form blue-colored oxidized TMB (oxTMB) in the presence of H 2 O 2 . UA can be quantified based on the theory.

Electrochemical oxygen reduction is a key process for many energy storage and conversion devices, and finding highly efficient, economical, and durable electrocatalysts to replace the Pt-based catalyst for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is a critical obstacle. In this article, porous Fe–N-codoped materials are obtained by pyrolysis of a defined precursor of polydopamine-coated Fe3O4 as not only template but also nitrogen and iron source. In 0.1 M KOH, the as-prepared catalyst exhibited high ORR activity (onset potential of 0.949 V and half-wave potential of 0.836 V vs. RHE), with excellent electrochemical stability, durability and remarkable tolerance toward methanol. The successful synthesis of porous nanospheres provides a novel way to explore a series of mesoporous metal electrocatalysts for energy conversion.

A facile fabrication of Fe and N co-doped mesoporous carbon (MC), as an efficient heterogeneous catalyst for the highly selective reduction of nitroarenes, is described. The Fe and N co-doped MC nanosheets are easily synthesized via a hydrothermal reaction between citrate acid and magnesium citrate, followed by calcination in the presence of melamine and potassium ferrocyanide. The Fe−N complex provides a unique active site for the selective reduction of 1-chloro-4-nitrobenzene, leading to the production of (E)-1,2-bis(4-chlorophenyl)diazene with a selectivity of >96%, in <40 mins. Control experiments based on non-doped, N-doped, and Fe-doped MC nanosheets demonstrate that selectivity greatly depends on the catalyst active component type, and that non-doped MC significantly contributes to the high efficiencies observed in the selective synthesis of azoxy compound intermediates. A broad range of substrates, including extra-functional groups on the nitroarenes rings, were successfully converted to the corresponding azo compounds at mild conditions with high selectivity.

Rational design of highly effective and low-cost oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) electrocatalysts to replace Pt-based catalysts is still a significant challenge for rechargeable zinc-air batteries. Hence, Fe, N co-doped one-dimensional carbon nanofibers with Fe 4 N species (Fe/N-CNFs) are synthesized through the electrospun technique combining with the “rapid calcination under vacuum” method. Benefitting from the one-dimensional structure obtained by the electrospun technique, the as-synthesized Fe/N-CNFs electrocatalyst with mesoporous exhibits a relatively large specific surface area of 624.12 m 2 g −1 . Notably, the intrinsic activity of Fe 4 N species as well as the large specific surface area can endow the resulting Fe/N-CNFs with a positive half-wave potential of 0.88 V compared with 20 wt% Pt/C (0.86 V) for ORR. The Fe/N-CNFs also exhibits better long-term stability than 20 wt% Pt/C. Furthermore, the rechargeable zinc-air battery constructed with Fe/N-CNFs as the cathode shows a high open-circuit voltage of 1.51 V, a peak power density of 135 mW cm −2 and an excellent cycle life for 55 h. The as-synthesized electrocatalyst is promising to replace the precious metal catalysts for rechargeable zinc-air batteries.
