Combining natural polymer starch with magnetite nanoparticles (MNPs) can reduce the aggregation of MNPs and enhance their adsorption capacity and stability. Iron sludge from a de‑ironing water plant and starch were employed as basic ingredients in this study. Bare magnetite nanoparticles (MNPs) and starch-coated magnetite nanocomposites (ST 2 -MNPs) were synthesized by a “green” co-precipitation method for the removal of low-concentration As(V) solutions. TEM, XPS, FTIR, XRD, VSM, BET, and TGA techniques were used to examine the physicochemical properties of the synthesized ST 2 -MNPs. TEM verified that the magnetite nanoparticles in the composites were evenly distributed. The ST 2 -MNPs (5.26 nm) possessed a smaller average particle size than MNPs (6.24 nm). And VSM confirmed their remarkable magnetic properties. The starch-to‑iron-sludge ratio was optimized and the influence of adsorbent dosage, pH, and co-existing anions on As(V) adsorption were studied. The acquired arsenate adsorption data were found to be consistent with the Langmuir isotherm model, with maximum adsorption capacities of 23.04 mg/g for MNPs and 42.88 mg/g for ST 2 -MNPs. This shows that the active sites on MNPs and ST 2 -MNPs are energetically homogenous, and that the addition of starch coating significantly increases magnetite's adsorption capacity for As(V). The adsorption kinetics follow a Pseudo-second-order kinetic model, indicating chemisorption between As(V) and ST 2 -MNPs. In addition, the adsorption mechanism of As(V) by ST 2 -MNPs including chemical adsorption and electrostatic attraction was determined through in-depth discussion of characterization methods and adsorption experiments. This study offers references for the removal of As(V) and the resourceful application of backwash iron sludge.

Phosphorus recovery from wastewater has the potential to alleviate both phosphorus scarcity and water pollution. Unlike mineral orthophosphate, organic phosphorus (OP) recovery typically requires multiple steps: oxidation to orthophosphate followed by separation. Electro-Fenton can synchronize these steps in a unified reactor. However, conventional anodic-Fenton (AF) that relies on the direct sacrificial Fe anode, often generates excessive iron sludge. This not only undermines the oxidative capacity but also changes the optimal pH conditions. Herein, we addressed these challenges by developing an induced electro-Fenton (I-EF) system that significantly reduces iron sludge by 94.0 %. The degradation of 2-phosphonobutane-1,2,4-tricarboxylic acid (PBTC, 5.0 mg P/L) in I-EF reached 76.7 % in 60 min, which is much higher than that (46.0 %) in the conventional AF system. Following PBTC degradation to form PO 4 3- , the I-EF system achieved 88 % PO 4 3- recovery through adsorption onto iron hydroxides. The exceptional performance in simultaneous PBTC degradation and recovery can be attributed to multiple functions of minimal iron utilization in the I-EF system. First, trace iron release can prevent quenching of hydroxyl radicals (·OH) by excessive Fe 2+ . Second, the absence of strong iron hydrolysis can maintain a stable pH condition (3.0–3.2) for Fenton reaction and avoid PBTC removal through direct coagulation process. The feasibility of I-EF was also successfully demonstrated for other OP forms containing C-P and C-O-P bonds. The degradation efficiency of various OPs was closely related to their bond energy and complexation capacity with iron hydroxides. This study makes use of the I-EF system to innovatively accomplish the degradation of organic phosphorous and simultaneous phosphate recovery.

Herein, a KFeS2 whisker was formed in mass production at a low temperature, with waste cold-rolling sludge as Fe source, which exhibited good performance in the removal of Zn/Ni from real electroplating effluent. At laboratory scale, KFeS2 was generated at 80 °C by the hydrothermal method, and KFeS2 whisker grew radially with the extension of the reaction time. This method was applied at pilot scale, where a similar KFeS2 whisker was also produced with waste cold-rolling sludge as Fe source, and a residual brownish supernatant was observed after the reaction and then completely recycled in the next round for KFeS2 synthesis. After recycling five times, the produced KFeS2 whisker did not change. The drying and storage of KFeS2 have also been verified. Freeze drying and vacuum drying were applicable, whereas air drying was not profitable. Moreover, the efficiency of Zn/Ni removal using undried KFeS2 was similar to that of dried KFeS2. The efficiencies of Zn/Ni removal using KFeS2 were apparently higher those of common reagents for wastewater treatment.

The extensive production of fly ash, despite its untapped potential due to its inherent richness in Fe, Ca, Si and Al, remains significantly underutilized. Herein, we innovatively designed a core–shell catalyst, waste steel slag@fly ash (WSS@FAC). It features a Fe-rich waste steel slag core surrounded by a high-strength, porous fly ash shell, effectively utilizing these valuable resources. This design leverages not only the Fe content for catalytic activity but also the abundant Ca, Si and Al in fly ash to enhance the structural integrity of the shell. By strategically incorporating Na 2 SiO 3 , the compressive strength of the shell was significantly boosted from 12.10 MPa to 24.12 MPa, attributed to formation of a robust glass framework structure. Furthermore, modulation of NaHCO 3 content engineered Fe leaching channels with an average pore size of 14.46 nm within the shell, ensuring controlled release of Fe ions through core–shell interactions. When the initial concentration of rifampicin was 10–60 mg/L, the removal rate could be as high as 97.06 ± 1.93 % − 83.78 ± 0.47 %. Over an extended reaction period of 80 h, the leached Fe concentration for WSS@FAC was only 1.88 ± 0.11 mg/L, which was approximately one-ninth of that for the same initial mass of WSS catalyst. Remarkably, the catalytic performance of WSS@FAC decreased by only 9.23 % from its initial efficiency of 83.78 %, highlighting its exceptional long-term stability. This study presents a novel Fenton-like catalyst that not only reduces Fe sludge production but also advances the sustainable recovery of Fe-containing industrial wastes, underscoring the importance of comprehensively utilizing all components within fly ash.

An improved dual-cathode peroxi-coagulation (PC) process using natural air diffusion electrode (NADE) and HNO 3 modified carbon felt (MCF) was first proposed to improve the removal efficiency of organic pollutants in neutral and alkaline wastewater and reduce the formation of iron sludge. The improved PC process does not require any additional oxidants or catalysts, nor does it need to adjust the pH of the wastewater in advance but can directly treat actual wastewater, achieving a target pollutant (C 12 H 14 N 4 O 2 S, sulfamethazine) removal of 87%-100% within 60 min and TOC removal of 46–76% within 240 min with the corresponding energy consumption below 0.02 kWh gTOC -1 . Compared with the conventional PC process, this improved process could produce hydroxyl radical ( • OH) and superoxide radical (O 2 •- ) more efficiently, which greatly increased the SMT removal rate constant by 3–4 times and oxidative removal proportion of organic pollutants from 42 ∼ 47% to 85 ∼ 90%. Thanks to the Fe(II) regeneration capacity of MCF to promote iron circulation, the yield of • OH was 4.1 times higher while the iron sludge production was less than a quarter when compared with that of conventional PC. The improved PC process illustrated better purification performance and lower energy consumption for actual wastewaters such as pharmaceutical wastewater, surface water and rural decentralized domestic sewage than the conventional PC process. Our work elucidated the mechanism of promoting Fe(II) regeneration through MCF cathode under alkaline conditions to enhance • OH production and O 2 •- oxidation, showing a good environmental application prospect.

Both the iron sludge and usage of H 2 O 2 restrict the promotion of the Fenton reaction. Herein, we proposed a hydrogen-accelerated oxygen reduction Fenton reaction system named MHORF-UiO-66(Zr) to try to solve the two problems under normal temperature and pressure. The active hydrogen, which is derived from H 2 catalyzed by the composite of Pd/UiO-66(Zr), could accelerate the reduction of Fe(III) and promote the electron transfer of two-electron oxygen reduction reaction to realize the self-generation of H 2 O 2 . And 45.9 mM of H 2 O 2 could be detected. As expected, 91 % of trimethoprim (TMP) could be degraded within 30 min in this system in the condition of 25 μM Fe(II), H 2 30 mL·min −1 , and Pd/UiO-66(Zr) 2g·L −1 , which was 2.94 times that of the control Fenton system. Based on these results, the feasibility of fundamentally achieving zero emission of iron sludge was successfully verified. It was confirmed that both the hydroxyl radical and singlet oxygen played the dominant roles during the reaction process through the analysis of electron spin resonance spectroscopy. After six reaction cycles, the removal efficiency of TMP could be maintained at least 94 %. It found that both the properties and morphology of this composite could remain based on the systematic characterization.

Conductive materials have been demonstrated to enhance sludge methanogenesis , but few researches have concentrated on the interaction among conductive materials, microorganisms and their immediate living environment. In this study, Fenton iron mud with a high abundance of Fe(III) was recycled and applied in anaerobic reactors to promote anaerobic digestion (AD) process. The results show that the primary content of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) such as polysaccharides and proteins increased significantly, possibly promoting microbial aggregation. Furthermore, with the increment of redox mediators including humic substances in EPS and Fe(III) introduced by Fenton iron mud, the direct interspecies electron transfer (DIET) between methanogens and interacting bacteria could be accelerated, which enhanced the rate of methanogenesis in anaerobic digestion (35.21 ± 4.53% increase compared to the control). The further analysis of the anaerobic microbial community confirmed the fact that Fenton iron mud enriched functional microorganisms, such as the abundance of CO 2 -reducing (e.g. Chloroflexi) and Fe(III)-reducing bacteria (e.g., Tepidimicrobium ), thereby expediting the electron transfer reaction in the AD process via microbial DIET and dissimilatory iron reduction (DIR). This work will make it possible for using the recycled hazardous material – Fenton iron mud to improve the performance of anaerobic granular sludge during methanogenesis.

An efficient and sustainable dye wastewater degradation system is designed by using Fe 2+ -modified graphene oxide/MXenes (GO/MX-Fe 2+ ) composites. Experimental results demonstrated that the GO/MX-Fe 2+ composites acted as an efficient catalyst for Fenton-like reaction; moreover, they functioned as an adsorbent to remove dyes and heavy metal ions from wastewater, enhancing the degradation rate and overall purification performance. Furthermore, the study partially confirmed that the ferrous ions involved in the reaction originate from the cross-linking process during hydrothermal synthesis, rather than adsorption. By controlling the dosage of Fe 2+ , efficient degradation can be achieved while inhibiting the formation of iron sludge. Notably, the system generated a small amount of non-iron byproducts during methylene blue (MB) treatment and almost none in the degradation of other dyes, reflecting its wide applicability. The reaction pH adaptability broadened from acidic to mildly alkaline conditions. The rate of MB within 1 h reached more than 95 %, and the GO/MX-Fe 2+ composites exhibited good recyclability. This study demonstrated that due to their straightforward preparation, superior performance and minimal secondary pollution, the GO/MX-Fe 2+ composites are an example of an efficient and sustainable approach for the design of composite materials for dye degradation and environmental remediation.

Cathode materials with high hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) selectivity and Fe 2+ regeneration under macroneutral conditions are the essential for practical electro-Fenton processes. Herein, we develop an amorphous cobalt sulphide (CoSx(t = x)@Cu) cocatalytic electro-Fenton (EF) system capable of effectively degrading organic pollutants, such as sulfamethoxazole, at macroneutral pH conditions. Owing to the flexible electronic properties of amorphous structures and charge redistribution triggered by S defects, the optimum CoSx(t = 8)@Cu cathode successfully introduces H*/H + and promotes the in-situ evolution of H 2 O 2 . Additionally, an acidic microenvironment was constructed on the CoSx(t = 8)@Cu surface by the unreduced H*/H + , enabling a self-adjustment from alkalinity to acidity in the EF reaction without adding acid. Such self-adjustment effectually inhibits iron sludge production and promotes Fe 2+ regeneration, assuring 80% Fe 2+ cycling efficiency. More importantly, the EF system possesses outstanding stability and applicability for organic pollutant remediation regardless of water matrices. This work elucidates the intrinsic mechanism of amorphous electrocatalysts in overcoming the pH limitation of EF reactions, extending the applicability of Fenton technology.
