Hematite tailings (HTs) are rich in silica and are used as replacements for fine aggregates in the preparation of construction materials. However, there is scope for a more effective utilization of the valuable elements present in HTs. In this paper, a process for preparing high-purity SiO 2 using HTs procured from Ansteel (China) is proposed. HTs were treated using the superconducting high-gradient magnetic separation (S-HGMS) technology, where the silica as part of the nonmagnetic fraction was obtained in the form of a high-silica concentrate, which was then subjected to mixed-acid leaching to dissolve impurities to achieve refined purification. The optimum process conditions for S-HGMS were determined, and the response surface methodology was applied to optimize the process parameters of the mixed-acid leaching process. The process indicators of the mixed-acid leaching step included the leaching time, leaching temperature, and molar ratio of the mixed acids. The optimum process conditions for S-HGMS were as follows: the magnetic strength-to-velocity ratio in the weak magnetic separation stage was set to 0.034 T·s/m whereas it was maintained at 0.076 T·s/m in the strong magnetic separation stage; the pulp concentration was 40 g/L, the pulp velocity was 500 mL/min, and the dispersant concentration was 1 mg/g. Under these conditions, the high-silica pulp was processed. The corresponding SiO 2 grade increased from 71.788 % to 95.260 %, and its recovery and yield reached 56.330 % and 42.450 %, respectively. The SiO 2 content in the sample increased from 95.260 % to 99.961 %. Further, the mechanisms of the S-HGMS and mixed-acid leaching were revealed. The proposed process is environmentally friendly and operationally inexpensive. It can reduce the amount of HTs by 42.450 %, and the obtained high-purity silica product has high economic value and good industrialization prospects.

V–Ti magnetite tailings (VTMTs) contain various heavy metals , such as Fe, Mn, V, Co, and Ni. The groundwater pollution caused by the tailing metal release has become a local environmental concern. Although studies have demonstrated the influence of alternate flooding and drying cycles (FDCs) on metal form and mobility in minerals, little was known about whether FDCs affect the metal release of VTMTs and the transformation of released metals. This study investigated the metal release kinetics of VTMTs and the metal transformation under FDCs in the absence and presence of acid rain (sulfuric and nitric acids) and bio-secreted organic acids (acetic, oxalic, and citric acids). The results showed that FDCs promoted metal release whether or not acids were present. The maximum released concentrations of V, Mn, Fe, Co, and Ni were as high as 78.63 mg L −1 ,1.47 mg L −1 , 67.96 μg L −1 , 1.34 mg L −1 , and 0.80 mg L −1 , respectively, under FDCs and citric acids . FDCs enhanced the tailing metal release by increasing the metal labile fraction proportion. However, the concentrations of released Fe, Mn, V, Co, and Ni all gradually decreased due to their (co-)precipitation. These precipitates conversely inhibited the subsequent mineral dissolution by covering the tailing surface. FDCs also enhanced the tailings’ porosities by 2.94%–9.94%. The mineral dissolution, expansion and shrinkage, and changes in tension destroyed the tailing microstructure during FDCs. This study demonstrated the low metal pollution risk of VTMTs under FDCs, either in acid rain or bio-secreted organic acids. However, the increase in tailing porosity should be seriously considered as it would affect the tailing pond safety.

This study focused on the preparation, characterization and photocatalytic performance of a monolithic composite made from vanadium-titanium magnetite tailings and quartz sand. Rhodamine B was used as a pollutant model and the photocatalytic degradation of rhodamine B by the prepared composites was investigated. The results indicated that the composite could effectively degraded Rhodamine B, achieving a degradation rate of 98 % within 20 min under optimal conditions. Investigations on the degradation mechanism revealed that dissolved oxygen, superoxide radicals, and the sensitization of Rhodamine B are crucial to the photocatalytic degradation process of Rhodamine B. These results suggest potential benefits for the comprehensive utilization of vanadium titanomagnetite tailings.

The recycling of mineral tailings is an important research topic. In this work, composite material was prepared using vanadium titanomagnetite (VTM) tailings, kaolin and sodium silicate, and used as a photocatalyst for photocatalytic degradation organic dyes. The results showed that the photocatalytic material has good photocatalytic performance on the degradation of rhodamine B in solution within a few minutes. The synthesized materials were characterized by XRF, XRD, FT-IR and SEM. The effects of solution pH and preparation conditions on the photocatalytic degradation efficiency were also investigated in detail. The results indicated that it was feasible to transform the VTM tailings into photocatalysts, and provided an idea for the comprehensive utilization of VTM tailings. Graphical Abstract

This study aimed to recover high-purity silica from hematite tailings (HTs) using superconducting high-gradient magnetic separation (S-HGMS) technology. This process involved converting silica into a silicone-rich concentrate and subsequently employing a fluorine-free mixed acid to leach the silicon-rich concentrate to remove impurities and achieve refinement and purification. The optimization of the S-HGMS process was conducted using the "Box-Behnken Design" method, resulting in the following optimal conditions: a pulp concentration of 50 g/L, a magnetic velocity ratio of 0.076 T s/m, and a pulp velocity of 500 mL/min. These conditions yielded a silica grade range of 61.905% in the HTs to 91.818% in the silicon-rich concentrate, with corresponding recovery rates of 53.031%. Under the optimized leaching process, this resulted in an increase in the silica content from 91.818% in the silicon-rich concentrate to 99.938% in high-purity silica. Additionally, by analyzing the production process of 1 kg of high-purity silica from HTs using the process LCA method, environmental hotspots were identified, and corresponding solutions were proposed. This approach is vital for efficient utilization of HTs as a resource. This process has low energy consumption and is environmentally friendly, enabling the reduction of hematite tailings. It has a wide range of applications and offers substantial economic benefits, rendering it a promising candidate for industrial applications.

Photochemical vapor generation (PVG) is regarding as an alternative sampling technique of atomic spectrometry, which not only has the advantages of traditional chemical vapor generation (CVG), but also is simple, safe and environmentally friendly. The addition of transition metal ions (such as Fe, Ni, Co, and Cd) can significantly improve the conversion efficiency of elements in PVG and achieve high sensitivity. In this work, the natural mineral (the tailing of vanadic titanomagnetite) is firstly reported as the sensitizer in PVG for highly sensitive detection of elements with inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP MS) measurement. As (III) was selected as the analyte. The main factors affecting the photocatalytic activity of the natural mineral and the analytical sensitivity of As(III) were systematically investigated. Under the selected conditions, the analytical sensitivity of the proposed method is about 3 and 4 times higher than that of the ferric ions and the nano-Fe 3 O 4 assisted PVG systems of As(III), respectively. Compared with commercial nano-Fe 3 O 4 , the nature mineral shows better stability in PVG medium. In addition, the possible mechanism of the tailing of vanadium titanomagnetite assisted PVG of As (III) was also investigated. It was found that the presence of V and Ti facilitates the photochemical reduction of As. The new finding in this work is important for developing novel catalytical materials in PVG and understanding the environmental impact of the tailings on ecological environment. The proposed method has been successfully applied for the detection of As in natural waters and certified reference materials (GBW 07305a and GBW 07303a).

The pollutants degradation rate of iron ore tailings–based heterogeneous catalysts is the main factor limiting its application. Herein, an iron ore tailings–based Fenton-like catalyst (I/W(3:1)-900-60) with a relatively fast catalysis rate was constructed by co-pyrolysis (900°C, 60 min holding time) of iron ore tailings and wheat straw with a mass ratio of 3:1. With wheat straw blending, the generated I/W(3:1)-900-60 presented a larger surface area (24.53 m 2 /g), smaller pore size (3.76 nm), reduced iron species (Fe 2+ from magnetic), and a higher catalytic activity (0.0229 min −1 ) than I-900-60 (1.32 m 2 /g, 12.87 nm, 0.012 min −1 ) pyrolyzed using single iron ore tailing under the same pyrolysis conditions. In addition, biochar and iron ore tailings in I/W(3:1)-900-60 were tightly combined through chemical bonding. The optimal catalyst remains active after three cycles, indicating its catalytic stability and recyclability. The good Fenton-like methylene blue degradation efficiency of I/W(3:1)-900-60 was ascribed to the sacrificial role of biochar, as well as the electron transfer between biochar and iron active sites or the redox cycles of ≡Fe 3+ /Fe 2+ . This finding provides a facile construction strategy for highly active iron ore tailings–based Fenton-like catalyst and thereby had a great potential application in wastewater treatment.

The rapid development of multifunctional and highly integrated electronic devices demands polymer composites with excellent thermal conductivity (TC), electrical insulation, and effective electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding capabilities. Rubber is extensively employed in these applications for its flexibility and inherent thermal conduction. However, developing rubber-based materials that can simultaneously fulfill these stringent performance requirements remains a significant challenge. In this study, silicone rubber (SR) was utilized to integrate the benefits of magnetic minerals and carbon-based materials. Pyrrhotite (Pyr) tailings and industrial-grade carbon nanotubes (CNT) were employed as raw fillers to fabricate a flexible, moldable composite (Pyr/S@CNT/RTV-2SR), which demonstrates exceptional TC, EMI shielding and electrical insulation properties. The sulfurized carbon nanotubes (S@CNT) create strong interfacial bonding and interactions, efficiently links the filler with the polymer matrix, significantly reducing interfacial thermal resistance between Pyr and SR. This innovation allows the material to achieve superior multifunctional properties. Furthermore, the Pyr/S@CNT/RTV-2SR material demonstrates a TC of 1.52 W·m −1 ·K −1 and a resistivity of 5.3 × 10 11 Ω·m. Moreover, it consistently provides EMI shielding effectiveness of 39.6 dB across the 8.2–12.4 GHz frequency range, with absorption as the primary shielding mechanism. The sustainable fabrication process effectively repurposes major solid waste materials, enhancing both the sustainability and value of the material.

In this study, a stepped-pore adsorbent was synthesized via a green in-situ method using low-cost iron ore tailings (IOT) as the silicon source. The formation mechanism was elucidated through comprehensive characterization of the material’s phase composition, microstructure, pore properties, and surface functional groups. The effects of roasting temperature, initial ammonia concentration, pH, and coexisting cations on adsorption efficiency were systematically investigated. Kinetic, isotherm, and thermodynamic analyses revealed a combined physisorption and chemisorption mechanism, with a maximum adsorption capacity of 28.72 mg/g. The process was determined to be spontaneous and entropy-driven. The material retained significant adsorption capacity after regeneration and in real wastewater tests. The adsorption mechanism primarily involved electrostatic attraction, hydrogen bonding, and cation exchange. The SI-6 adsorbent demonstrates high cost-effectiveness, excellent environmental compatibility, and strong adsorption performance, showing great potential for environmental remediation and sustainable resource utilization.

The long-term accumulation of vanadium-titanium (V-Ti) magnetite tailings has caused severe soil and groundwater pollution through metal leaching, which is exacerbated by light-driven redox reactions and organic acid-mediated mineral dissolution. However, the mechanisms of metal leaching from tailings and their subsequent transformation under the combined effects of light and natural organic acids remain unclear. This study investigated the release and transformation mechanisms of heavy metals from V-Ti magnetite tailings under three organic acids (citric, oxalic, and acetic) and light exposure. Results showed that in dark conditions, citric acid (CA) had the strongest metal dissolution capacity for Fe, V, Mn, and Al, followed by oxalic acid (OA) and acetic acid (AA), achieving 2.5-5.2 times higher release than inorganic acids. CA promoted metal release through stable tricarboxylate complexes, while OA dominated in acidic conditions via Fe(II)-oxalate radical formation but declined at pH > 5 due to iron oxalate precipitation. AA, with its monocarboxylate structure, had limited complexation capacity, achieving only 20-30% of CA’s leaching efficiency, primarily weakening the mineral surface through proton attack. Under light exposure, Fe(II) release increased by 200-500% via ligand-to-metal charge transfer (LMCT), triggering Eh fluctuations (>300 mV), rapid pH elevation (ΔpH = 4.0 in 2 h), and colloidal nanoparticle formation (209.6 nm, ζ = -49.9 mV). Elevated temperatures accelerated initial leaching but enhanced metal immobilization through hydrolysis. The study demonstrated that organic acids and light exposure are key drivers of heavy metal release from V-Ti magnetite tailings, with light playing a crucial role in catalyzing these processes.
