Smart thermal phase change materials with switchable morphology

Haiquan Zhang,Fuge Wang,Susu He,Bozhou Cao,Qiadong Yao,Ning Wang

Smart phase change materials (PCMs) have been carefully engineered using cutting-edge manufacturing techniques to meet specific application requirements. A multifunctional phase change composite has been developed by combining polyethylene glycol (PEG2000) binary eutectic, sodium stearate (NaR) micro−/nano-medium, and iron powder as raw materials. The binary eutectic PCM provides the composite with plasticity at room temperature. The addition of an appropriate amount of sodium stearate enhances the dispersibility of high-density iron powder (7.86 g cm −3 ) within the PCM, without altering the intrinsic morphology of the binary eutectic (1.27 g cm −3 ) before or after melting. As a result, the functional composite exhibits several attractive properties, including morphology switchability under external forces, temperature, and magnetic fields, asymmetric transmission of electrical signals in temperature gradients, efficient photo-thermal conversion, and excellent thermal storage performance. This self-prepared functional composite holds great potential for applications in drug delivery, morphology control in confined spaces, temperature management in building materials and electronic components, as well as electrical signal transmission across varying temperatures.

Electrochemically driven Fe0-activated sulfite oxidation for enhancing sludge dewaterability

Jie Ye,Yue Lai,Chao Wang,Raymond Jianxiong Zeng,Changgeng Liu,Hao Lin,Shungui Zhou,Zhen He

Sulfate radical ( SO 4 · - )-based advanced oxidation processes (SR-AOPs) are promising for sludge dewatering. In this work, an electrochemically driven Fe 0 -activated sulfite system (E/Fe/sulfite) was developed and demonstrated for sustainably releasing Fe 2+ to activate sulfite for dewatering waste activated sludge. Under the optimal conditions (sulfite dosage = 40 mg/g dry solids, current density = 30 mA/cm 2 , pH = 6, and time = 60 min), the reduction of capillary suction time and water content of sludge cake were 87.9 ± 2.8 % and 73.1 ± 0.8 %, respectively. The improved dewatering performance was attributed to the degradation of tightly-bound extracellular polymeric substances, along with the decreased live/dead cell ratio and the increased permeability of sludge flocs. The thermal effect (∼21–59 °C) in the E/Fe/sulfite system accelerated the release of intracellular proteins, which could be effectively degraded by the strong oxidizing SO 4 · - . The results also suggested that electrochemical oxidation and thermal effect in the E/Fe/sulfite system had a synergistic impact on improving sludge dewaterability. According to the density functional theory calculation, the hydrophobic amino acids produced from protein degradation were favorable for forming the drainage channels and enhancing sludge dewaterability. This study provides new insights for understanding the SR-AOPs and their applications to sludge treatment.

Recovery of high-quality iron phosphate from acid-leaching tailings of laterite nickel ore

Yanchao Qiao,Huimin Wang,Chao Liu,Shuang Luo

Laterite nickel ore is rich in nickel and iron resources, and the nickel element is extracted in the form of nickel salt. However, the acid-leaching tailings of laterite nickel ore (LTLNO), which contain valuable iron resources, have not been cost-effectively recovered. In this work, we designed a novel method to extract iron from LTLNO and recycle it into high-valuable iron phosphate products using only phosphoric acid and iron powder. We explored the effects of reaction parameters, such as phosphoric acid concentration, iron powder dosage, time, and temperature, on the leaching behavior of key elements. The results showed that the iron leaching rate was as high as 96.54 % when using 3.5 mol/L phosphoric acid with a liquid-to-solid ratio (L/S) of 5 mL/g and an iron powder dosage based on the Fe/Fe n+ ratio of 0.5 after 3 h at 25 °C, and a final high-purity FePO 4 (99.4 %) was obtained. Kinetic analysis revealed that the leaching reaction was controlled by the diffusion through the neogenetic layer, and the leaching reactions were thermodynamically favorable. This method allows for a simpler and more efficient recovery of iron and the products of higher-value iron phosphate products than other LTLNO recycling technologies. Additionally, it offers a total economic benefit of $134/t for LTLNO treatment, demonstrating great prospects for industrial application.

A slow-release reduction material of Escherichia sp. F1 coupled with micron iron powder achieves the remediation of trichloroethylene-contaminated soil

Zhineng Wu,Hanyu Niu,Jiao Wang,Runnan Guo,Zixuan Yang,Gaolei Liang,Xiaodong Ma

Trichloroethylene (TCE) is a prevalent organic pollutant found in soil. The oxide passivation layer on the surface of micron iron powder inhibits the release of its reducing components, leading to ineffective reduction and purification of TCE in soil. To enhance TCE degradation, a slow-release reduction material " Escherichia sp. F1-micron iron powder" was developed. A novel iron-reducing bacterium, Escherichia sp. F1, was isolated from soil contaminated with chlorinated hydrocarbons. This bacterium demonstrated a sustained iron reduction capability, achieving a reduction rate of 38.7% for Fe(Ⅲ) within 15 days. Genome sequencing revealed that strain F1 harbors 53 functional iron reduction genes and 2 dehalogenation genes. Single-factor experiments identified the optimal conditions for TCE degradation in soil using the coupling material: glucose concentration at 40 mmol/kg, soil water content at 50%, and bacterial inoculum at 1% (v:w). Under these optimal conditions, the coupled material achieved 86.86% degradation of TCE in soil within 28 days. Further analysis using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy of micron iron powder, soil Fe(Ⅱ) concentration, and soil physicochemical properties demonstrated that the addition of strain F1 to the soil could disrupt the passivation layer of iron oxide on the surface of micron iron powder, promoting the exposure of its reactive sites and internal reducing active components. This resulted in an in situ self-actuated activation of passivated micron iron powder, leading to an improved removal rate and complete dechlorination of TCE in the soil. Soil microbial high-throughput sequencing revealed that the addition of strain F1 regulated the soil bacterial community, significantly enriching of Escherichia-Shigella species associated with iron-reducing functions. This enrichment facilitated the degradation of TCE in the soil through coupling materials. The functional material plays a crucial role in achieving green treatment and risk control of sites contaminated with chlorinated organic pollutants.

Study on desulfurization and modification of high-sulfur petroleum coke via reduced iron powder catalytic roasting

Pen Luo,Zhengjie Chen,Xiuhua Chen,Wenhui Ma,Xiaowei Gan,Rui Xie

Sulfur in petroleum coke poses significant environmental risks and damages equipment and carbon products, making its removal essential. This study presents a method for the desulfurization and modification of high-sulfur petroleum coke through catalytic roasting with reduced iron powder. The experimental results indicated that with a petroleum coke particle size of 75–58 μm, an iron powder-to-petroleum coke mass ratio of 50 %, and roasting at 1400 °C for 1 h, the desulfurization rate reached 87.93 %, reducing the sulfur content to 0.91 wt%, with a product recovery rate of 80.82 %. A series of characterizations of petroleum coke products before and after desulfurization were conducted, revealing that both the desulfurization efficiency and the graphitization performance of petroleum coke were significantly enhanced by the addition of iron powder. Additionally, density functional theory calculations for the pyrolysis of benzothiophene showed that the energy barrier for the pyrolysis process was reduced in the presence of Fe catalysis, theoretically confirming the desulfurization mechanism. The resulting low-sulfur petroleum coke products can serve as raw materials for graphite preparation.

Green and Kilogram-Scale Synthesis of Fe Hydrogel for Photothermal Therapy of Tumors in Vivo

Guangchao Xie,Liang Zhang,Jinbin Pan,Xuejun Zhang,Shao-Kai Sun

Photothermal agents with good biocompatibility, high tumor accumulation efficiency, large-scale production ability, and low cost are crucial for potential photothermal treatment in clinic. Herein, we proposed a green and highly efficient strategy to fabricate a kilogram-scale alginate-Ca2+-Fe powder hydrogel (ALG-Ca2+-Fe) by turning commercial Fe powder into hydrogel for enhanced photothermal therapy. The ALG-Ca2+-Fe was formed by simply dispersing commercial Fe powder into the preformed alginate-Ca2+ hydrogel in a green and energy-/time-saving way. The hydrogel exhibited the advantages of ultrahigh loading capacity of Fe powder (>100 mg mL–1), excellent large-scale production capacity (>1 kg in lab synthesis), low cost (<1.7 $/kg), and good injectability. More importantly, large size and hydrophobicity endowed Fe powder with excellent tumor retention effect and minimal diffusion to surrounding tissues, greatly benefiting improving treatment efficiency and reducing side effects. In vivo and in vitro studies both proved that the large-scale produced ALG-Ca2+-Fe can be used for highly efficient and biosafe tumor treatment in vivo by simple noninvasive injection. The developed ALG-Ca2+-Fe with multiple superiors opens up a novel green way to develop efficient and safe photothermal therapeutic agents with great clinic transformation potential.

Comparison of 2-Octanol and Tributyl Phosphate in Recovery of Tungsten from Sulfuric–Phosphoric Acid Leach Solution of Scheelite

Liao Yulong,Zhao Zhongwei

Tungsten was recovered from sulfuric–phosphoric acid leach solution of scheelite using 2-octanol and tributyl phosphate (TBP). Approximately 76% of the tungsten and less than 6.2% of the iron were extracted when using 70% 2-octanol, showing good selectivity for tungsten over iron; the tungsten extraction could not be significantly enhanced using a three-stage countercurrent simulation test. Moreover, more than 99.2% of the W and 91.0% of the Fe were extracted when using 70% TBP, showing poor selectivity, but after pretreating the leach solution with iron powder, less than 5.5% of the Fe was extracted. The loaded phases were stripped using deionized water and ammonia solution. The maximum stripping rate of tungsten from loaded 2-octanol was 45.6% when using water, compared with only 13.1% from loaded TBP. Tungsten was efficiently stripped from loaded phases using ammonia solution without formation of Fe(OH) 3 precipitate. Finally, a flow sheet for recovery of tungsten with TBP is proposed.

Removal of ammonia nitrogen and phosphorus by biochar prepared from sludge residue after rusty scrap iron and reduced iron powder enhanced fermentation

Lu Zhang,Feng Deng,Zhongkai Liu,Lexian Ai

The rusty scrap iron (RSI) or a mixture of rusty scrap iron and reduced iron powder (RSI-RIP) can be used as an exogenous additive to enhance the anaerobic fermentation of sewage sludge . In order to make rational use of the fermentation residue, the sludge after intensified fermentation was pyrolyzed to produce biochar in this study, which was used in the adsorption of ammonia and phosphorus from the anaerobic fermentation broth . The experimental results demonstrated that the pore structure of the sludge biochar was greatly improved after enhanced fermentation with RSI and RIP. Meanwhile, there was an increase in the proportion of metallic elements such as Ca, Fe and Mg. On the other hand, the RSI-RIP co-enhanced fermented biochar (ES600) prepared at 600 °C showed a higher adsorption capacity , which was comparable to the commercially activated carbon. Neutral or weakly alkaline environments were preferred during the adsorption process . At a suitable pH condition , the maximum removal efficiency of ammonia nitrogen (NH 4 + -N) and total phosphorus (TP) on ES600 reached 91.3% and 98.6%, respectively. In addition, the saturated ES600 was regenerated by simple washing with ammonia-free water. After three cycles, the removal efficiency of NH 4 + -N and TP remained at 71.3% and 83.2%, respectively. As a result, the biochar prepared from RSI-RIP enhanced fermented sludge can be used as a promising low-cost adsorbent.

Multimaterial 3D-printing barium titanate/carbonyl iron composites with bilayer-gradient honeycomb structure for adjustable broadband microwave absorption

Ping Gong,Yan Li,Chenxing Xin,Qiaoyu Chen,Liang Hao,Qinglei Sun,Zheng Li

An effective method to fabricate barium titanate (BTO)/carbonyl iron powder (CIP) composites with enhanced microwave absorption (MA) performance was prepared via multimaterial digital optical processing (DLP) 3D printing technique. The bilayer-gradient honeycomb structural absorber (BGHSA) with adjustable broadband can be obtained by leveraging of varying compositional and structural design (layered thickness ratios , and gradient structures). The optimal reflection loss ( R L ) value and effective bandwidth of BGHSA can reach −51 dB and 15.4 GHz, respectively, exhibiting a distinct improvement ( R L increased by 32.4% and effective bandwidth by 42.9%) compared with the reference. The highly improved performances especially in the broadband absorption (15.4 GHz) were mainly attributed to the better impedance matching and waves multi-reflections. This work provides a promising strategy to fabricate functionally graded materials for potential application in the absorption of electromagnetic waves .

Recovery of nickel and iron from ferronickel powder and high nickel matte via the atmospheric leaching-hematite precipitation process

Xiaohua Peng,Xin Jin,Yong Zhen,Bo Yang,Chang Wei,Xingbin Li,Zhigan Deng,Minting Li

This study introduces a novel synergistic leaching process for ferronickel powder and high nickel matte, enabling the atmospheric leaching and the hematite precipitation process to mitigate carbon emissions associated with the treatment of Ni laterite. The results indicated that following seven cycles of synergistic leaching, the Ni2+ concentration in the solution exceeded 80 g/L, compared with the 15 cycles required for non-synergistic leaching. Optimal leaching conditions included a temperature range of 80°C−95°C, a stirring speed of 300 rpm, an initial H2SO4 concentration of 100 g/L, and a reaction time of 8 h, maintaining a final pH of 3.5−4.5, and an excess of ferronickel powder. Leaching successfully extracted Ni and Fe from ferronickel powder, with Cu2+ in the solution being reduced and enriched in the leaching residue. For the hematite precipitation process, optimal conditions involved a temperature of 200°C, a stirring speed of 500 rpm, a reaction time of 3 h, and an addition of 20 g/L of high Ni matte. The Fe removal efficiency exceeded 86%, resulting in hematite products that contained 61.15% Fe, 0.60% Ni and 1.48% S. These products can be commercially utilised, either sold to cement plants or utilized as raw materials for ironmaking.

Investigating the Effect of Carbonyl Iron Powder Doping on the Microstructure and Magnetic Properties of Soft Magnetic Composites

Yang Liu,Rui Wang,Kaixuan Li,Ran Chen,Zhaoyang Wu,Yang Li

This study proposes the thermal decomposition of salt compounds and doping of carbonyl iron powders (CIPs) to optimize the preparation of an insulating layer through the solid-phase interface reaction. First, (Fe–Si–Cr + CIPs)/ZnSO4composite powders were synthesized using the hydrothermal method and (Fe–Si–Cr + CIPs)/ZnO·SiO2·Cr2O3SMCs with a ZnO·SiO2·Cr2O3composite insulation layer were prepared through heat treatment and cold pressing. The effect of the CIP doping content on the microstructure and magnetic properties of the (Fe–Si–Cr + CIPs)/ZnO·SiO2·Cr2O3SMCs were then investigated. During the heat treatment, ZnSO4decomposed into solid ZnO and gaseous SO2and O2. The O2drives the solid-phase reaction, prompting the migration of nonmagnetic Si and Cr atoms from the interior of the Fe–Si–Cr soft magnetic powder to the surface insulation layer, finally forming the ZnO·SiO2·Cr2O3insulation layer. The doped CIPs also show good plasticity during the coating process, combining with the coating layer to fill the internal pores of SMCs. Moreover, as the particles are small with a high surface area, they increase the number of reaction sites for ZnSO4decomposition and facilitate the growth of the composite insulation layer, promoting its uniform distribution on the surfaces of the soft magnetic powders and CIPs. The lattice mismatch between the insulation layer and soft magnetic powder is reduced while the magnetic-phase content is increased, allowing the effective doping of CIPs sin the insulation layer. The magnetic properties of SMCs can be precisely regulated by changing the doping amount of CIPs. Unlike other insulating layer–preparation strategies based on the interfacial solid-phase reaction, the proposed method exploits the high plasticity and specific surface area of CIPs and removes the lattice mismatch between the insulation layer and soft magnetic powder.

Remediation of heavy metal(loid)s contaminated sediments—in situ iron treatment and subsequent magnetic extraction

Ou Taosha,Guan Mengyun,Mai Yongrui,Deng Peiyan,Xiao Yutang,Deng Dayi

Purpose Surface sediments contaminated with high levels of multiple heavy metal(loid) species are very common environmental problems. Especially, the labile and bioaccessible fractions of heavy metal(loid)s in the sediments are posing serious risks to the biota and the overlaying water quality. This study aimed at developing a potential method to manage the activity of the labile fractions of heavy metal(loid)s in surface sediments. Materials and methods This study assessed the feasibility of adding iron powder, a low-cost industrial by-product, to sediments containing high levels of Pb, As, and Cd to adsorb labile fractions of heavy metal(loid)s onto the sorbent surfaces and to retrieve the heavy metal(loid) laden powders by applying external magnetic field. In addition, the redistribution of Pb, Cd, and As in different sediment fractions, the dissolved fraction and the sorbent-adsorbed fraction, was also investigated and characterized. Results and discussion The results indicate that the bioactive labile fractions (exchangeable and carbonate-bound fractions) of heavy metal(loid)s are prone to concentrating onto iron powders and can be selectively removed from the sediments by magnetic retrieval. In addition, iron addition induces conversion of labile fractions of heavy metal(loid)s into more stabilized fractions. Conclusions Overall, the process can effectively minimize the activity of labile fractions of heavy metal(loid)s in surface sediments.
