A green efficient strategy for the combination of biodegradation and adsorption methods is urgently desired nowadays to degrade dyes in an economical and effective way. In this study, a kind of novel, environmentally friendly and efficient hybrid for the fungus and chitosan–Fe membrane has been fabricated by the alginate approach. Myrothecium verrucaria I-5 and C-1, deuteromycete fungi capable of producing laccase to degrade dyes, have been used. It is found that the chitosan–Fe membrane can excellently immobilize the fungi mycelia and enzyme, and after the immobilization, the fungi and enzyme still maintain a high activity after the dye decolorization. Also, the immobilized fungi membranes have been proved to have a high efficiency for dye decolorization. Simultaneously, the decolorization ability of the crude enzymes, which are extracted from I-5 and C-1 medium, and the decolorization ability of chitosan–Fe membrane are also investigated, respectively. The results demonstrate that the dyes can be removed by the fungi and the membrane synergistically. In addition, different kinds of dyes are successfully removed with chitosan–Fe immobilized fungi membranes. These results demonstrate that dyes are first adsorbed on the chitosan–Fe membrane, decreasing the toxicity to the fungus, and then bio-degraded by the laccase produced from the fungi on the membrane.

Tetracyclines (TCs) residues in agricultural soils pose significant threats to crop safety and human health. Ferrous (Fe(II)) amendment is a promising strategy for contaminated soil remediation. However, the effects of Fe(II) on the fate of TCs in paddy soil remain unexplored. This study investigated (i) the effect of Fe(II) on the bioaccumulation and translocation of TCs (oxytetracycline, doxycycline, tetracycline, and chlortetracycline) in rice tissues and (ii) bacterial community shifts in rhizosphere and bulk soils. TCs residues in paddy soil showed a positive correlation with the initial exposure dosage. Fe(II) amendment promoted the formation of iron plaque on root surfaces, which retained approximately 50–70 % of TCs, thereby reducing TCs residues and restricting their further upward translocation as a physical barrier. TCs exposure induced phytotoxicity in rice, while Fe(II) supplement alleviated TCs-induced oxidative damage in rice plants. Moreover, TCs exposure and Fe(II) supplement reshaped bacterial community composition, resulting in a predominance of Proteobacteria and Gemmatimonadota. The enrichment of TCs degrader and iron-oxidizing bacteria in the rhizosphere promoted the reduction of TCs residues in soil and their accumulation on root surfaces. Collectively, Fe(II) amendment is a promising approach to reduce antibiotic residues in paddy soil and hence rice.

Reactive oxygen species (ROS) are critical mediators of soil biogeochemical processes. While the production of ROS with biochar (BC) in the rhizosphere has not been explored. We demonstrate that BC and Fe-modified biochar (FeBC), prepared at 400°C and 600°C, influence ROS generation in paddy soil containing biodegradable (polybutylene succinate: PBS) and conventional (polystyrene) microplastics (MPs). FeBC, particularly FeBC prepared at 600°C, enhance ROS (O 2 •− , H 2 O 2 , • OH) production in paddy soil. The results of rhizosphere-focused pot experiment simulating field-like flooded conditions highlight that FeBC significantly increased O 2 •− , H 2 O 2 , • OH concentrations, especially with PBS (25.63, 27.69, 35.82 µM/kg, respectively) surpassing control by 3.1–3.6-folds. Iron plaque formation, water-soluble phenols, and microbial activity further influenced ROS dynamics and accelerated MP degradation via oxidative fragmentation (SEM surface fissures), dissolved organic carbon release (484 mg/kg), and SUVA 254 decline (4.6 folds). Microbial shifts toward Actinobacteria (37–43 %) and Firmicutes (25–28 %) correlated with ROS dynamics, linking biotic-abiotic degradation pathways. This work reveals the novel role of FeBC in rhizosphere ROS generation and the environmental behavior of MPs in BC-treated agricultural systems.

The hydrophilic benzimidazole@ZIF-8@tannic acid (ZBT) nanoparticles and the pH-responsive modified epoxy (EP) coatings based on ZBT were prepared innovatively. The result exhibited that the ZBT had excellent compatibility with the EP coatings, and the addition of ZBT improved the protective properties of the EP coatings, which were attributed to the formation of the Zn(OH) 2 deposition film, the inhibitor adsorption film and the ferric tannate film on the steel substrate. Meanwhile, the original adhesion and wet adhesion strengths of the ZBT/EP coatings were both enhanced, which was mainly attributed to the enhanced interaction between the ZBT/EP coatings and the carbon steel, and the crosslinking density and the degree of curing of the coatings were also improved. After 173 days of immersion, the impedance value of the ZBT coatings remained at 7.89 × 10 7 Ω·cm 2 , while the EP coatings decreased to 3.94 × 10 3 Ω·cm 2 . The wet adhesion loss of EP and ZBT/EP coatings was 63.6 % and 27.1 %, respectively. In the end, the protective mechanism of the ZBT/EP coatings was first proposed.
