Vivianite widely existed in digested sludge and activated sludge as a potential phosphate resource recovered from wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). As an important product of extracellular electron transfer (EET) and biological iron reduction, the production of vivianite can be enhanced by conductive materials. Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) with excellent electrical conductivity have been reported to promote electron transfer, which was applied in wastewater treatment to accelerate the degradation of the contaminants. However, the impact of CNTs on vivianite formation was barely reported. In this study, the iron reduction, vivianite recovery, and the biotoxicity of CNTs were investigated in order to determine the influence of CNTs towards the vivianite production. The enhancement of vivianite production after CNTs adding reached up to 17 % by promoting the electron transfer between dissimilative iron-reducing bacteria (DIRB) and Fe(III). However, at the initial stage (0–24 h), Fe(III) reduction efficiency decreased by 81 % after inoculating with sewage sludge, which was attributed to CNTs destroying of the cell membrane (as indicated by SEM, CLSM and AFM analysis). The biotoxicity of CNTs stimulated DIRB to secret extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) and form bio-flocs to resist the physical puncture. After 48 h, the proportion of living DIRB in 1000 mg/L CNTs batch increased to 98 %, which was 79 % higher than 12 h. As a result, the vivianite recovery of raw sewage with 1000 mg/L CNTs increased to 44 ± 1 %, which was 33 % higher than that in the CNT-0.

Effects of fulvic acid (FA) and bovine serum albumin (BSA) on the transformation of ferric phosphate (FePO 4 ) during anaerobic fermentation of waste activated sludge were investigated. Both FA and BSA promoted phosphorus (P) release from FePO 4 . A higher P release efficiency was achieved with FA addition compared with BSA at the same dose although BSA promoted iron (Fe) reduction more effectively. Both FA and BSA contributed to the enrichment of vivianite but hindered P re-precipitation with other ions, and FA affected more significantly. Microbial analysis revealed that FA contributed to the enrichment of iron-reducing bacteria (IRB) transporting electrons indirectly and increased the bioavailable Fe(III) via siderophores; BSA provided more electron donors, thereby enriched IRB transferring electrons directly to Fe(III). This study provides an in-depth understanding of Fe and P transformations in sludge bearing iron-phosphorus compounds and it is of practical value for P recovery as vivianite.

Microbial Fe (III) reduction generally could outcompete methanogenesis due to its thermodynamic advantage, while the low bioavailability of Fe (III) compounds limits this process in the anaerobic digestion system, which could result in the low recovery of vivianite. Therefore, this study investigated the competition between Fe (III) reduction and methanogenesis in the presence of different biochar (pyrochar and hydrochar). The results showed that pyrochar obtained at 500 °C (P5) resulted in the highest Fe (III) reduction (80.3%) compared to the control experiment (29.1%). P5 also decreased methane production by 9.4%. Both conductivity and surface oxygen-containing functional groups contributed to the promotion of direct electron transfer for Fe (III) reduction. Genomic-centric metatranscriptomics analysis showed that P5 led to the highest enrichment of Geobacter soli A19 and induced the significant expression of out membrane cytochrome c and pilA in Geobacter soli A19, which was related to higher Fe (III) reduction.

Anaerobic digestion of waste activated sludge (WAS) to produce acetate has recently attracted growing interest, while the slow hydrolytic acidification of sludge and the consumption of acetate by methanogens both decrease the yield of acetate. In this study, Fe 3 O 4 was added to a WAS anaerobic digester under alkaline conditions (pH = 10). The concentration of short-chain fatty acids (SCFA) during WAS anaerobic fermentation was found to be affected positively by Fe 3 O 4 . The maximal SCFA production of the Fe 3 O 4 -added digester was 3619.4 mg/L, while the maximal SCFA production in the control was 2899.7 mg/L. The increase of SCFA with Fe 3 O 4 was mainly resulted from the increase in acetate accumulation (accounting for 90%), because Fe 3 O 4 stimulated dissimilatory iron reduction (DIR) that participated in the decomposition of complex organics and the transformation of pronionate and butyrate into acetate. Further investigation showed that each step of hydrolytic-acidification process was promoted except the homoacetogenesis. The activity of enzymes and abundance of microbes relevant to hydrolysis and acidification were in agreement with the above results.

Diphenylarsinic acid (DPAA) is an emerging phenylarsenic compound derived from chemical warfare agents. It has been suggested that biostimulation of sulfate reduction decreases the concentrations of DPAA in soils. However, biostimulation often induces Fe(III) reduction which may affect the mobility and thereby the transformation of DPAA. Here, a soil incubation experiment was carried out to elucidate the impact of Fe(III) reduction on the mobilization and transformation of DPAA in a biostimulated Acrisol with the addition of sulfate and lactate. DPAA was significantly mobilized and then thionated in the sulfide soil (amended with sulfate and sodium lactate) compared with the anoxic soil (without addition of sulfate or sodium lactate). At the start of the incubation period, 41.8% of the total DPAA in sulfide soil was mobilized, likely by the addition of sodium lactate, and DPAA was then almost completely released into the solution after 2 weeks of incubation, likely due to Fe(III) reduction. The relatively low fraction of oxalate-extractable Fe in Acrisol, which contributes significantly to DPAA sorption and is more active and reduction-susceptible, may explain the observation that only < 40% of the Fe(III) (hydr)oxides were reduced when DPAA was completely released into the solution. A more rapid and final enhanced elimination of DPAA was observed in sulfide soil and the fraction of total DPAA decreased to 60.1 and 91.0%, respectively, at the end of the incubation in sulfide soil and anoxic soil. The difference appears to result from increased DPAA mobilization and sulfate reduction in sulfide soil. On the other hand, the formation of FeS precipitate, a product of Fe and sulfate reduction, may reduce the efficiency of DPAA thionation. Accordingly, the potentially contrasting effects of Fe(III) reduction on DPAA thionation need be considered when planning biostimulated sulfate reduction strategies for DPAA-contaminated soils.

Optimizing electron shuttles and revealing their mediating mechanisms are crucial for enhancing the ammonium (NH 4 + -N) oxidation coupled with Fe (III) reduction. In this study, anthraquinone-2,6-disulfonate (AQDs), riboflavin (RF), and humic acid (HA) were optimized in batch tests. The optimal dosages of 6, 2, and 8 mg/L for AQDs, RF, and HA resulted in average maximum NH 4 + -N removal of 80.2 %, 88.5 %, and 99.2 %, with 91.4 %, 88.5 %, and 74.7 % of the removed NH 4 + -N converted to nitrate, respectively. In addition, an enhanced extracellular electron transfer was also observed, including an enlarged current, diversified REDOX pathway, and reduced resistance. Outperformed AQDs in nitrogen removal and microbial activity, HA and RF were selected for the subsequent 100-day long-term investigation. During this stage, excess influent Fe tended to be stored as insoluble coatings on the sludge surface, while RF and HA facilitated its use to compensate for the reduced influent Fe 3+ . Meanwhile, they led to an increase in iron-reducing ( Comamonas ) and NH 4 + -N oxidizing bacteria ( Nitropsira and Planctomycetes ), as well as improvements in electrochemical characteristics and microbial activity. Moreover, microbial N and Fe metabolic potential were efficiently enhanced. Consequently, NH 4 + -N and TN removal rates were obviously increased to approximately 90 % and 40 %, respectively. The addition of electron shuttles led to long-term improvements in extracellular mass transfer and microbial metabolism, which contributed more than bridging the extracellular electron transfer. These results deepened the understanding of the effect of electron shuttles on Feammox.

Biological iron reduction and reductive dehalogenation occur in similar ecological environments, however, how Fe(III)/Fe(II) redox cycles impact the microbial dehalogenation processes remains controversial. In this study, the favorable microbial reductive dechlorination activity has been widely observed in iron-rich river sediments by national sampling, with the dechlorination efficiency showing a positive correlation with the concentration of Fe(III). Microcosm experiments demonstrated that the addition of nano-hematite resulted in a maximum increase of 2.16 times in the dechlorination rate constant ( k ) for 2,4,6-trichlorophenol, achieved via synergistic interactions with Fe(III) reduction. Multi-tools, including transcriptomic analyses, revealed that the addition of nano-hematite enhanced the process of Fe(III) reduction by upregulating genes associated with extracellular electron transfer (e.g., CYC, pliM ) and conductive biofilm formation (e.g., livH, secY, wza ). This synergistic Fe(III) reduction further facilitated intracellular carbon metabolism, energy production, and reductive dechlorination, as confirmed by the upregulated functional genes identified through transcriptomics and RT- q PCR. The discovery of the novel phenomenon involving synergistic Fe(III) reduction and dehalogenation broadens our understanding of the biochemical cycling of organohalides (e.g., chlorinated phenols) in iron-rich environment, and provides a feasible strategy for improving biodehalogenation through the regulation of carbon and electron flow at sites contaminated with organohalides.

Antibiotic pollution in the environment poses stress to plants. Iron plaque on plant roots plays a vital role in inhibiting the uptake of pollutants by plants. However, the role of environmental factor-driven alterations in iron plaque on plant uptake of the pollutant remains unclear. In this study, we selected Shewanella oneidensis MR-1, renowned for its iron-reduction capabilities, to explore its influence on the formation of iron plaque and subsequent uptake and transformation of ciprofloxacin (CIP) by plants. The presence of S. oneidensis MR-1 induced significant modifications in iron plaque composition, leading to a reduction in the iron plaque amount and an increase in ferrihydrite content within iron plaque. The changes in iron plaque composition substantially enhanced CIP immobilization on the plant root surface, thereby impeding both the uptake and apical translocation of CIP, resulting in a marked reduction in CIP-induced phytotoxicity. Furthermore, iron plaque formed with the participation of S. oneidensis MR-1 accelerated the removal of CIP from solution and induced a greater generation of oxidative degradation products. This study underscores the potential of microorganisms to influence the formation of rhizosphere iron plaque and inhibit plant uptake of pollutants, providing novel insights into safe production practices and pollutant degradation strategies.

Iron reducing bacterium Acidiphilium cryputum JF-5 was used to biologically load lanthanum on bentonite (BLB) to remove arsenic(V) from solution. By biological reductive release of iron from bentonite and lanthanum loading, new lanthanum-loaded bentonite was prepared and the adsorption efficiency of arsenic(V) was improved from 7.87 mg/g to 22.69 mg/g in bath experiment. The mobilization of the dispersed biologically loaded lanthanum bentonite particles can be described by the Convection-Dispersion Equation. The breakthrough ability of biologically lanthanum-loaded bentonite (BLB) increased by 5.5 times when increasing flow velocities from 90 mL/h to 360 mL/h. When injected BLB into arsenic(V)-containing pre water of quartz column, the concentration of arsenic(V) could quickly decrease the initial concentration of arsenic(V) from 2000 μg/L to lower than limit for drinking water and keep relative stable. Meanwhile, the hydraulic conductivity of treatment system is also improved compared to prinstine bentonite due to iron-deficient in BLB. The results suggest that biologically load lanthanum bentonite may be an effective modified mineral for remediating arsenic(V)-containing soil.

Anaerobic ammonium oxidation coupled to ferric iron reduction (Feammox) has been assumed to play an important role in nitrogen removal from ecosystems. This study assessed the potential role of Feammox in nitrogen transformation in eutrophic lake sediment using an isotope tracing technique in sediment slurry incubation experiments. Feammox was discovered in eutrophic lake sediment. A significant correlation was found between Feammox rates and iron-reducing rates. Furthermore, the positive correlations between the abundance of iron-reducing bacteria (FeRB), such as Geobacteraceae spp. and Shewanella spp., and Feammox rates indicate that Feammox was mediated by FeRB. The potential rate of Feammox in the isotopic tracer incubation treatment was 0.23–0.43 mg N kg −1 day −1 . The estimated nitrogen loss caused by Feammox accounts for 5.0–9.2% of the human-induced N input annually into the eutrophic lake. Feammox alone or coupled with anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox) and/or denitrification may have an essential role in the nitrogen cycle within eutrophic lake sediment.

The low voltage electrochemical extraction of iron from iron oxide powder is reported. Hydrogen gas can be generated in molten LiCl at 660 °C by the electrochemical decomposition of steam at a voltage as low as only 0.97 V. Interestingly, individual submicrometer-sized iron oxide particles simply immersed in the melt can directly be reduced to semi-spherical metallic iron particles with a particle size of about 5 μm under the influence of hydrogen gas generated in-situ in the molten salt. The direct reduction of Fe 2 O 3 powder, instead of sintered Fe 2 O 3 pellets, which are commonly used as the cathode in the conventional molten salt electro-deoxidation processes, enhances the simplicity, energy consumption and the reaction kinetics of the molten salt hydrogen reduction process. In this method, the bottom surface of the graphite crucible acts as the cathode, resulting in a high rate of hydrogen cations discharge, hence a high current. The high temperature and low voltage characteristics of this method offer a scalable strategy for direct reduction of metal oxide particles in a green and low-cost way, where there is no requirement for the compaction of metal oxide powders into pellets. The mechanism involved in this hydrogen production and utilization methodology is discussed.

To recover zinc from electric arc furnace (EAF) dust, a process of primary normal pressure leaching and secondary alkaline pressure leaching is proposed. First, under the alkaline pressure leaching system, the experiment of pure zinc ferrite being reduced by iron powder was carried out. Under the optimal reduction conditions (i.e., temperature of 260 °C, NaOH concentration of 6 mol/L, liquid-to-solid ratio of 50 mL/g, and a 5-fold excess of iron powder), 89% of zinc was extracted. The iron in the reduced residue exists as a magnetite phase. Subsequently, the normal pressure leaching experiment was carried out with EAF dust as raw material, and 66% zinc was leached. The main phase of zinc in normal leaching residue was determined to be zinc ferrite. Then, the normal leaching residue was reduced by iron powder under the alkaline pressure leaching system, and 66.5% of zinc was extracted. After the two-stage leaching process, the leaching rate of zinc in EAF dust can achieve 88.7%. The alkaline pressure leaching solution can be returned as the normal pressure leaching solution, and the magnetite in the alkaline pressure leaching residue can be recovered by magnetic separation.
